49ers Activate Dominique Zeigler From PUP List, Sign Punter
The 49ers made a few roster moves today, the most prominent of which was activating wide receiver Dominique Zeigler from the physically unable to perform list. Zeigler was added to the PUP list on July 28 while he continued rehabbing from his 2010 ACL injury. The team also signed punter Sam Paulescu and waived QB Jeremiah Masoli and K Fabrizio Scaccia.
Zeigler is in a tough position because he's three weeks behind the rest of the wide receivers in terms of practice reps. He's got some veteran experience, but he has a lot of work to do given the lengthy wide receiver depth chart. He's got two weeks of practice and two games to make an impact, so we'll be keeping a close eye on him. Is there enough time for him to force his way onto the 53-man roster?
The Paulesco move makes perfect sense. My boy Andy Lee took a nasty spill on Saturday after the botched field goal attempt. After what appeared to be a rare mishandling of a snap, Lee had to fire off a pass and as he passed the ball he fell backwards and took a tough hit. At first I thought the Raiders had manhandled him, but on second viewing, it looked like it had as much to do with his backward momentum.
I will say that some Raiders fans were talking smack about the play and little did they know that the world's biggest Andy Lee fan was sitting in front of them. I didn't say anything because they actually thought it was Akers who got hurt and they were saying something about how the 49ers only free agent signing just got hurt. At that point I could only shake my head at how moronic they sounded.
And Masoli getting waived? I'd argue this shows the 49ers have more interest in potentially keeping McLeod Bethel-Thompson on the practice squad. I could be wrong, but maybe they keep McBLT in camp to get a last few looks at him before it comes time to clear the decks.

I read somewhere that we brought back LeRoy Vann too...
Is this true?

Haven't heard about this at all
And I usually know everything. Just kidding though, I would have read somewhere if this had happened. Haven’t seen any reports on twitter or anything…
I saw it on the 49ers yahoo page under recent transactions.
It was dated Aug. 17th (signed) LeRoy Vann

Waiving Masoli makes perfect sense … at 5-11 (generous), he’s too small for an NFL QB and they gave him zero time at RB or WR, the other positions he might work at. Having McBLT listed as the 4th string QB also makes sense in trying to stash him on the practice squad and having other NFL teams not get a chance to see him.

He was going to be released eventually
Also, McBLT<Nate Davis. We would only put him on the practice squad to have a QB there, I don’t think a CFL team would claim him off waivers if they were allowed…
Not needed
It is just understood by all…except the organization.
Okay, this changes my predictions on our 5 WR a little:
M. Crabtree
B. Edwards
J. Morgan
K. Williams
D. Zeigler
Solid corps.

I think Ginn makes it
and Harbaugh seems to like Lance Long, Ziegler has his work cut out for him
I really hope you are wrong.
Ginn just does not make sense.
I will be disappointed if we keep him and I have to watch him drop even one more pass.

agreed...having a KO returner isnt even that valuable anymore and I think we have enough speedsters for PR.
bottom line: ginn sucks a WR who can’t catch isnt valuable
not so much when others can do it effectively too.
but we’ll see how it shakes out

I think RoJo ends up on the practice squad
or is released, he’s not making the most of his game time, which is key for a 6th rounder.
I don’t know.
I want to like him but the Saints game keeps sticking out. It may be too early but as mentioned below, maybe PS?
I just think Williams has the advantage there and I think Harbaugh will like Zeigler more. On the basis of what type of WR’s he had at Stanford. I’ve been wrong before. I just don’t think it looks too good for Rojo right now… not to say that is his ultimate future though.

I tend to agree
Haven’t seen anything from Johnson. Williams isn’t going anywhere, he has shown good hands and ability to get open, as well as block (which is huge to me).
I'm not feeling witty enough right now
thinking Ronald Johnson makes it...WR coach loves him...although he isnt getting much work, he could
Love the competition at WR....

Bodes well for Alex's confidence too.
If he has guys that he knows he can throw it up to and they’re going to go get it, then he will hesitate less to pull the trigger.
In most cases, QB’s make their WR’s… I think the opposite could hold true in this case; WR’s making the QB. This could revive Smith’s career, or shot at being better than what he has been labeled as.

Cards WR's
A. Roberts (Citadel) and S. Williams (Toledo) look like they could be dangerous options to Kolb also. We need to not sleep on those two guys when we play them.

Meh
Doucet doesn’t seem very good to me. Maybe it’s just ‘cause Boldin was there in his spot before him. We’ll see I guess.

I’m just not seeing him make the cut this time…

I think he could
We already know what he can do. He has shown the ability to go up for the ball as well as very good hands. Depends of course if they keep 5 or 6. 6 I say he’s in for sure, 5 probably will depend on if they stick with Ginn or not.
I'm not feeling witty enough right now
Sam Paulescu
did we sign him as a punter or special teams ace?
no its bobby boucher reincarnated as a punter!!

Fullback Miller already better than old man Norris!
Miller is showing more and more snap by snap.
Im really liking Miller…. and believe he should start right now over Morris…what say you?
supplemental draft
does anyone know if the niners have any interest on any of the players that were not picked on the supplemental draft? i would assume that if they werent picked then they become free agents right?
Yeah. They do.
I’d be interested to see what that DB has to offer.

Off topic: So Fooch you telling me to be wary of drafting VD in my FFL? lol

nice...
Wondering when somebody would stumble on that…I think it was more about being wary of drafting VD high LAST year. The original topic idea I was approached to write on dealt with Tim Tebow having a ton of TDs last year, accounting for over 50% of his fantasy scoring. Given that he’s not even starting in Denver at this point, I decided to mix up the substance and making it more 49ers-oriented!

Yea had VD last year & traded him in package...
Vick & VD for Hillis & Bowe….needed an RB since backup QB was Rivers plus had Tamme as back up TE

A reversal of that TD trend is Jason Witten...
He has out of this world numbers for yards rec for a TE, you can basically call him a WR with his numbers, but no TD’s last year…

Gibson
Gibson was aquired on waivers LAST year by the 49ers and was released by them over a week ago. I think the info is old/bad.

I was wondering when Zeigler was going to quit milking that injury and become a team player
No heart. No desire. I can’t wait for this douche to go elsewhere.
What a pansy.
etc.
Funny...
sounds like a lot of comments we’ve been seeing about another player
Come on, Alex, please be good this year...
Looks like Mays is gone
49ers traded S Taylor Mays to Bengals for an undisclosed draft pick. @AdamSchefter
The greatest coaches can take raw, natural talent and mold it into a legend!
I feel really bad for all the UDFAs and low round picks
this lockout has killed them because they didn’t get a chance to get all that extra time in during the summer before training camp
Injuries are stackin up for some teams so some of them will still be fortunate...
Just not a lot though.

Zeigler
I just hope Harbaugh gives this guy a legitimate chance at playing. He looks to be scary good. Call me crazy, but when I see this guy on the field, he reminds me of a Brandon Lloyd/Randy Moss type of player. Fluid. Extremely fluid. I’ve always been intrigued.
Anyone know what the knock on him is? Why can’t he see playing time?

Lee
It’s a hip pointer which apparently is painful but not long-lasting. I’d imagine he’ll sit the next two games and then be ready for the start of the regular season.
