Golden Nuggets: Michael Crabtree And Avoiding A PUP Violation

Welcome back for another edition of the Nuggets. The 49ers just avoided a possible NFL rules violation yesterday involving Michael Crabtree. The 49ers receiver was out catching some passes from Jim Harbaugh and the quarterbacks before practice started. The news reports indicate the 49ers called the NFL to inform them that it was taking place during warmups and not practice. A player on the PUP list is not allowed to take part in practice and any such participation would be a violation of the rules. The Colts apparently had such an issue with Peyton Manning a couple years back.

I'm not sure why the 49ers called first, although my guess would be they saw some of the beat-writer tweets and wanted to clarify the situation with the league. If they get ahead of the problem maybe they can avoid punishment from the league? The NFL seems to enjoy disciplining the 49ers, so might as well try and clear up the situation sooner rather than later. On to the links...

It sounded like Maiocco and co at CSN ratted them out!

As soon as the beat writers tweeted that he was catching balls at practice, Maiocco put out an initial version of the article above, with the paraphrase “A call to the NFL by CSN California regarding the matter was not immediately returned.” Why would they call out the team before the team had the chance themselves to report the issue?

Because what happens to the team isn't as important as breaking a story

And possibly being the first to publish a penalty for the team.

This

This makes more sense than any personal grudge against Crabtree.

I still wonder though…

Reporters don't work for the 49ers

In my opinion it’s a joke that a beat reporter(s) knows the league rules and a head coach paid 5 mil/per, doesn’t. They are not snitches, they are doing their job. You’re not at Stanford anymore Jim.
