49ers 53-Man Roster Projection: Post-Goodwin, Rogers Edition
Two days have passed since our first 53-man projection of training camp and we've had some pretty significant changes through free agency. Although free agency technically doesn't really end and players can still be added, the 49ers training camp roster is just about set. The team currently has 85 players signed, with five more open spots if they choose to add bodies. Braylon Edwards remains an option so we'll adjust accordingly if he comes to town.
I had to go out on a limb with some of the players on my projection, particularly the 3rd quarterback role. I actually still think the 49ers could bring in a veteran if they're not satisfied with Jeremiah Masoli or McLeod Bethel-Thompson. For now though, I'm going to stick with the theory of Masoli in a super utility role. The third QB position on this roster is the most tenuous among my choices and we very well could see a veteran brought in at some point. Or maybe the 49ers go with only two QBs. Who knows.
Check over this roster projection and let me know if I'm way off base with any of these? I think there are some borderline folks, but other than Masoli do any of these picks seem inconceivable?
QB (3): Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick, Jeremiah Masoli (Utility Role)
RB (3): Frank Gore, Anthony Dixon, Kendall Hunter
FB (2): Moran Norris, Bruce Miller
TE (3): Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, Konrad Reuland
WR (5): Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, Kyle Williams, Ronald Johnson, Ted Ginn
OT (3): Joe Staley, Anthony Davis, Alex Boone
OG (4): Mike Iupati, Chilo Rachal, Adam Snyder, Daniel Kilgore
C (2): Jonathan Goodwin, Tony Wragge
NT (2): Isaac Sopoaga, Ian Williams
DE (4): Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Ricky Jean Francois, Will Tukuafu
OLB (4): Aldon Smith, Parys Haralson, Ahmad Brooks, Antwan Applewhite
ILB (4): Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Scott McKillop, Blake Costanzo
CB (5): Carlos Rogers, Shawntae Spencer, Tarell Brown, Chris Culliver, Phillip Adams
S (6): Reggie Smith, Madieu Williams, Taylor Mays, C.J. Spillman, Colin Jones, Curtis Taylor
K (1): David Akers
P (1): Andy Lee
LOS (1): Brian Jennings

Seems entirely reasonable to me
I think the WRs are fluid though. If Crabs ends up missing serious time…
Six Safeties?
I’d drop that number to five and add one TE. Harbaugh is really big on TE utilization.
"(I)f you think you've got an inside track to absolute truth, you become doctrinaire, humorless and intellectually constipated." Saul Alinsky
seriously...do we need Moran and 2 FBs...at least Miller is suppose to be a ST machine
Also…do you think Ginn makes it thru camp…a WR who can’t catch isn’t valuable and I think we have others who can return kicks. Also not sure we carry 9 OL…isn’t it usually 8? Maybe Wragge is expendable now?
Wrong, we carried 10 OL last season IIRC
Ginn is the best returner on the team and isn’t worse than a UDFA WR. He’ll make it.
yay ginn...guess im waiting to be impressed by anything he's ever done.
well he only getting paid 1.3M and is a FA next year…maybe he has something to play for now
Maybe
They will keep norris and use miller and conrad in a h-back/ tightend roll. But I think nate b would be better, suck that he got hurt.b

does anyone know the new Practice Squad rules?
same as before…what is it 7 players?
Safeties?
Six safeties seems like a lot. Is that because some of them are special teamers that happen to be safeties?
Think so?
Madieu was statistically as good as Goldson, and all reports are that Reggie Smith is tearing it up in camp.
Do want Braylon (or Floyd) though.
Goldson appears to think he's worth a lot...32 teams haven't agreed with him yet.
Would rather NOT have an overpaid under contributing player eating cap space
Our DBs will be under fire and I want better depth than special teamers.
If we sign him for what his value is, it’s a win-win.

Thaddeus Gibson will make the Roster I think
Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs in 2012, hopefully! :)
6 safeties is 2 to 3 too many, and Norris is well... Norris
Would rather have Thaddeus Gibson for sure.
Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs in 2012, hopefully! :)
yeah too early to tell...other option would be go w/ 2 QBs or try to slip Kilgore to the PS?
it’s all a guessing game now until the final roster is set anyway…speculation is fun!
indubitably
I bet Kilgore would survive to the PS. A no-name olineman from a small school in 1-AA drafted in the 5th? Eh. I think not carrying a 3rd QB is a dumb risk when we don’t have a deeply entrenched starter. Masoli seems like a good balance since he can play QB in a pinch and contribute elsewhere.
5th round picks aren't necessarily safe on waivers.
They obviously didn’t feel safe leaving him on the board into the sixth round.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
I think Kilgore would be safe
ppl were all up on Baalke’s nuts at the time of the draft, saying he was the 73rd tackle in the draft or something
i believe so, that's how we got Gibson from Pitt. if they are signed off waivers they have to be on the 53.
if they clear waives i believe they can sign to any PS.
Thadeus Gibson for Curtis Taylor and
Sealver Siliga might beat out Tukuafu, otherwise, looks good to me barring any further FA signings
I see Tukuafu making the cut and Siliga going PS

I’d put more money on WT making the 53 than Siliga. Siliga is going to be PS or on the street when training camp is over.

If we sign Brandon Marshall

This sounds reasonable....
This signing almost guaranteed Norris was done unless they intend to put Miller on the PS. Corcoran was on the PS last year and had no where to go, so they would have signed him to a one year deal if he was just camp fodder.
Sounds like they intend for him to start while Miller grasps the entire role of fullback.
Bruce Miller vs Moran Norris
You can’t cut the latter and expect the former to seamlessly step in. He’s a rookie, he’s never ever played FB before, and he’s hurt and missing time. Hate Norris all you want (most of us do), but he’s not going anywhere for now.
What happened to Miller again?
I’m blanking on which injury was him.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
...and then it's Byham who's out for the year, right?
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
What about Corcoran?
I really doubt the FO gives him a 3 year contract if he was just here to take up space for training camp. I’d say he’s more likely to be our starter week 1 than either Norris or Miller.
7th round draft picks sign 3-year deals and aren't locks to make roster, either
The sky isn't falling. It was just an acorn.

True...
But in a year where we could easily get a FB like Corcoran on a one year deal, why the 3-year variety? I just think his contract balances almost perfectly with them trying to convert Miller to FB.
Miller can play ST and study up in practice on the naunces of playing FB. He can also be used situationally for pass rush if we’re desperate and he’s dressing for the game. In the meantime, Corcoran can hold it down doing lead blocking and we won’t have to worry about poor blocking and no ability to catch the ball.
can Corcoran catch? Haven't heard his name mentioned yet.
The sky isn't falling. It was just an acorn.

Here's college stats....
Seems more like a lead blocker, but his YPC average is pretty good.
That appears to be Norris' advantage over anyone trying to replace him.
He doesn’t get injured. (Gotta be suitable for the purpose intended)

Norris tenure with the 49ers
Norris is not the worst player the 49ers could have at the FB position, He serves an adequate purpose for run blocking, however he is inadequate at pass recieving, Last year in the season opener in Seattle he almost fell down on a four yard pass route and there was no defender there, He was trying to back pedall while the ball sailed over his head.
he was below average even in run blocking last season.
he’s just not performed well enough

Norris roster spot
As below average as Norris may be, right now he is the more proven option, Miller has probably never even played on the offensive side of the ball. Lets just say they both need to learn how to catch a ball.

49ers CB situation
I really hope Phillip Adams improves, at least enough to be the Nickel back. He took one to the house on a PR last year in the Pre season. Rogers doesn’t exactly seem too thrilling. Hopefully an adequate replacement for Clements.

Really? I thought it was Martz who didn't know how far he had from the goalline and Singletary not knowing anything about time management? He got zombied out in that situation.

I think there was confusion when the clock started unexpectedly
and they didn’t have time to set up a play.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
Yeah, I remember that...but I thought that was more due to Singletary not understanding how the clock works and etc...while Martz was trying to find out from the official what the distance was.
by Sactown_Loyalty19 on Aug 4, 2011 9:26 AM PDT up reply actions
All I remember is the clock being stopped with just a couple seconds left
mass confusion all over the place…and then the ref announces that the clock will start on his whistle, and panic ensued.

Correct
Marts & Sing, from what I believe, thought it was gonig to be 1 to 1 1/2 yards out, but it was spotted 2 1/2 yards out. I think Martz was forced into that play call due to time management and ball placement confusion.

A couple changes I can see....
1. Replace Norris with Corcoran.
2. Replace Ginn with Jurovich; unless we sign Edwards, then he takes the 5th WR spot, though he’ll be #1 on depth chart.
3. Replace Wragge with Bieler
4. Add Gibson to OLBs and remove C. Taylor from S group
Only other thing I could see is possibly keeping MBT/veteran as the 3rd QB and releasing one other player elsewhere; while still keeping Masoli for the utility role. It’s possible that we only go with 4 WR in this case, meaning K. Williams is most likely the odd man out. I like Williams though and would be bummed to see him go.
kinda like the Bieler keep..really what's the point of keeping Wragge for 1 year, Snyder can back up center
and you can develop Kilgore…who seems like the long term plan for C

he deserves at least another year to see if he’s can make the transition for DE to OLB

This
He put up ten sacks in limited playing time for Ohio State, being utilized both on the inside and outside. Ohio State ran up against some pretty solid offenses during that span as well.
Gibson was a surprise early entrant in the draft. At this point in his development, he may purely be a pass rusher. He struggles reading run keys and is an unknown in pass coverage. He’s almost exclusively a 3-4 linebacker and will need to be coached up.
He left early, which was a huge mistake. Would have been a 1st round pick had he returned to Ohio State for his Senior Season.

Maybe Cincy has a change of heart and deals Palmer. I don’t see it happening, but I wouldn’t mind it.
I’m wondering how teams will approach the cap thing. Several small cuts, or one high dollar player? Should be fun to watch.
Repeating something over and over doesn't make it true.
Do you want Palmer on the 49ers?
I know you don’t like Alex Smith, but I don’t think Palmer’s the answer at this point. I’d certainly rather have that 1st,2nd or 3rd rounder it will take to get him.
1st rounder?
yeah, not so much. How about straight up, Smith for Palmer, MAYBE toss a low rounder in there to boot.
Repeating something over and over doesn't make it true.
Straight up? Nah
Rather have Smith, who’s younger and didn’t fall off a cliff in production after a devasting knee and shoulder injury.
i don't suppose there's an over-under this season on how long it takes for Alex...
to give way to Kaepernick?? I’m gonna say 3 games, 4 at most.
I'd go higher...
10 games would be a reasonable over-under. At that point we would know how he’s playing and adapted to the system and if we were already too far out of playoff reach.
