49ers 53-Man Roster Projection: Post-Goodwin, Rogers Edition

Two days have passed since our first 53-man projection of training camp and we've had some pretty significant changes through free agency. Although free agency technically doesn't really end and players can still be added, the 49ers training camp roster is just about set. The team currently has 85 players signed, with five more open spots if they choose to add bodies. Braylon Edwards remains an option so we'll adjust accordingly if he comes to town.

I had to go out on a limb with some of the players on my projection, particularly the 3rd quarterback role. I actually still think the 49ers could bring in a veteran if they're not satisfied with Jeremiah Masoli or McLeod Bethel-Thompson. For now though, I'm going to stick with the theory of Masoli in a super utility role. The third QB position on this roster is the most tenuous among my choices and we very well could see a veteran brought in at some point. Or maybe the 49ers go with only two QBs. Who knows.

Check over this roster projection and let me know if I'm way off base with any of these? I think there are some borderline folks, but other than Masoli do any of these picks seem inconceivable?

Star-divide

Seems entirely reasonable to me

I think the WRs are fluid though. If Crabs ends up missing serious time…

I wonder

if we drop the third TE in favor of another WR?

by See Jay on Aug 4, 2011 7:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Six Safeties?

I’d drop that number to five and add one TE. Harbaugh is really big on TE utilization.

seriously...do we need Moran and 2 FBs...at least Miller is suppose to be a ST machine

Also…do you think Ginn makes it thru camp…a WR who can’t catch isn’t valuable and I think we have others who can return kicks. Also not sure we carry 9 OL…isn’t it usually 8? Maybe Wragge is expendable now?

by Coretete on Aug 4, 2011 7:44 AM PDT reply actions

Wrong, we carried 10 OL last season IIRC

Ginn is the best returner on the team and isn’t worse than a UDFA WR. He’ll make it.

Think so?

Madieu was statistically as good as Goldson, and all reports are that Reggie Smith is tearing it up in camp.

Do want Braylon (or Floyd) though.

yeah too early to tell...other option would be go w/ 2 QBs or try to slip Kilgore to the PS?

it’s all a guessing game now until the final roster is set anyway…speculation is fun!

by Coretete on Aug 4, 2011 7:56 AM PDT up reply actions

indubitably

I bet Kilgore would survive to the PS. A no-name olineman from a small school in 1-AA drafted in the 5th? Eh. I think not carrying a 3rd QB is a dumb risk when we don’t have a deeply entrenched starter. Masoli seems like a good balance since he can play QB in a pinch and contribute elsewhere.

by See Jay on Aug 4, 2011 8:03 AM PDT up reply actions

5th round picks aren't necessarily safe on waivers.

They obviously didn’t feel safe leaving him on the board into the sixth round.

by teekay on Aug 4, 2011 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions

This sounds reasonable....

This signing almost guaranteed Norris was done unless they intend to put Miller on the PS. Corcoran was on the PS last year and had no where to go, so they would have signed him to a one year deal if he was just camp fodder.

Sounds like they intend for him to start while Miller grasps the entire role of fullback.

by 9thevolution on Aug 4, 2011 8:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Bruce Miller vs Moran Norris

You can’t cut the latter and expect the former to seamlessly step in. He’s a rookie, he’s never ever played FB before, and he’s hurt and missing time. Hate Norris all you want (most of us do), but he’s not going anywhere for now.

by See Jay on Aug 4, 2011 8:20 AM PDT reply actions

What about Corcoran?

I really doubt the FO gives him a 3 year contract if he was just here to take up space for training camp. I’d say he’s more likely to be our starter week 1 than either Norris or Miller.

by 9thevolution on Aug 4, 2011 8:32 AM PDT up reply actions

True...

But in a year where we could easily get a FB like Corcoran on a one year deal, why the 3-year variety? I just think his contract balances almost perfectly with them trying to convert Miller to FB.

Miller can play ST and study up in practice on the naunces of playing FB. He can also be used situationally for pass rush if we’re desperate and he’s dressing for the game. In the meantime, Corcoran can hold it down doing lead blocking and we won’t have to worry about poor blocking and no ability to catch the ball.

by 9thevolution on Aug 4, 2011 8:46 AM PDT up reply actions

That appears to be Norris' advantage over anyone trying to replace him.

He doesn’t get injured. (Gotta be suitable for the purpose intended)

Norris tenure with the 49ers

Norris is not the worst player the 49ers could have at the FB position, He serves an adequate purpose for run blocking, however he is inadequate at pass recieving, Last year in the season opener in Seattle he almost fell down on a four yard pass route and there was no defender there, He was trying to back pedall while the ball sailed over his head.

As below average as Norris may be, right now he is the more proven option, Miller has probably never even played on the offensive side of the ball. Lets just say they both need to learn how to catch a ball.

A couple changes I can see....

1. Replace Norris with Corcoran.

2. Replace Ginn with Jurovich; unless we sign Edwards, then he takes the 5th WR spot, though he’ll be #1 on depth chart.

3. Replace Wragge with Bieler

4. Add Gibson to OLBs and remove C. Taylor from S group

Only other thing I could see is possibly keeping MBT/veteran as the 3rd QB and releasing one other player elsewhere; while still keeping Masoli for the utility role. It’s possible that we only go with 4 WR in this case, meaning K. Williams is most likely the odd man out. I like Williams though and would be bummed to see him go.

he deserves at least another year to see if he’s can make the transition for DE to OLB

This

He put up ten sacks in limited playing time for Ohio State, being utilized both on the inside and outside. Ohio State ran up against some pretty solid offenses during that span as well.

Gibson was a surprise early entrant in the draft. At this point in his development, he may purely be a pass rusher. He struggles reading run keys and is an unknown in pass coverage. He’s almost exclusively a 3-4 linebacker and will need to be coached up.

He left early, which was a huge mistake. Would have been a 1st round pick had he returned to Ohio State for his Senior Season.

Breaking news:

Braylon Edwards and Malcom Floyd both fly to SF to meet with 49ers. Both of them had layovers at LAX, and both signed deals with the Jets before leaving Los Angeles.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

lol

Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.

Come on..

That snap was impressive. WIth our offense, I’m sure he thought we were punting.

pass

I see suspensions in his future. Who wants to pay a guy not to play?

looking at our schedule,

we play the majority of the NFC West later in the season, so signing him would still be great and beneficial

Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs in 2012, hopefully! :)

Interested to see who gets cut

for cap reasons elsewhere in the league. Could see last second trading.

Maybe Cincy has a change of heart and deals Palmer. I don’t see it happening, but I wouldn’t mind it.

I’m wondering how teams will approach the cap thing. Several small cuts, or one high dollar player? Should be fun to watch.

Do you want Palmer on the 49ers?

I know you don’t like Alex Smith, but I don’t think Palmer’s the answer at this point. I’d certainly rather have that 1st,2nd or 3rd rounder it will take to get him.

1st rounder?

yeah, not so much. How about straight up, Smith for Palmer, MAYBE toss a low rounder in there to boot.

Straight up? Nah

Rather have Smith, who’s younger and didn’t fall off a cliff in production after a devasting knee and shoulder injury.

I would have done a 3rd + 5th round or something (maybe a 2nd) if it was a normal offseason. This move became useless once we were forced to put our eggs in Smith’s basket for 1 more year.

I'd go higher...

10 games would be a reasonable over-under. At that point we would know how he’s playing and adapted to the system and if we were already too far out of playoff reach.
