Golden Nuggets: I Turn My Head For One Minute ...

Good morning everyone. I decided yesterday that I'd get some work done elsewhere. I have to catch up on some writing, to be sure, but I reasoned that nothing big was bound to happen. So the 49ers decided to trade a guy just one-year removed from his rookie season, sign another semi-big name and also shut the door on yet another. I woke up to a thousand or more Niners Nation comments and realized that I probably should have stayed home and got some writing done. I'll do my best to get you the most pertinent and useful links today, trying to include the most interesting and informative at the top, though that doesn't mean the bottom isn't worth a read - probably means I didn't have time to read it. Enjoy.

I cant speak for anyone else,

but last year around this time, I felt almost exactly the same way. The difference being, that last year I had no reason to. This year…who knows? But for now.. DIVISION CHAMPS BABY!!!!!!!!

"The year we beat Miami in the Super Bowl, ... do you know how many defensive linemen were in our rotation? Nine, and we used them all quite a bit. We just wore the Dolphins out."

Maiocco said that few days ago

the 49ers looked like a UFL team,but now they’ve a chance.

make no mistake

the team is going to look awful for a little while

All these players practicing together for the first time in new system, and the first pre-season game is in a week.

Awful was last year

When I could call the play before they ran it.

I think by the time the preseason is over...

we’ll at least see a slight resemblance to a competent NFL team. It could be ugly, but we’ll likely rely on Frank and the backs and a lot of high percentage passing. It could look like what the Jets have been doing recently…… only more creative.

Mays trade stuff could be a subtle message

Not to Mays but to the rest of the team – we didn’t pick you, if you aren’t what we want and you don’t do things the way we wnat you to, we’ll accept low ball offers and just get you out of the door.

by DaveintheUK on Aug 5, 2011 4:30 AM PDT reply actions

I don’t like the handling of Mays, I personally think that at the end of Whitners deal, Mays should be ready, and in the mean time contribute to ST’s.

Wait for it, wait for it, yeah 49ers sign, an undrafted free agent, AGAIN!!

by rlott#42 on Aug 5, 2011 4:44 AM PDT reply actions

nothing has happened yet

some teams inquired, they have a bunch of safeties, Mays isn’t going to start, they’re looking to see what offers there will be. They didn’t tell him to go home.

by whistlingmountain on Aug 5, 2011 5:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Who said Mays is going to start now? Hes a project, always has been.

I think you're reading way too much into what is being said

seeing as you just seemingly made my reply have a completely different meaning.

by whistlingmountain on Aug 5, 2011 5:54 AM PDT up reply actions

I was saying the same thing yesterday....

It’s not like Mays is being payed starters money and sitting on the bench. Really should be keeping him and letting him learn for the next year or two before throwing him into the fire. Only problem with this is, he might not work out at all and then his value seriously decreases.

I’d be fine with keeping him for this year and if he still doesn’t have it, fire up the “Andy Reid Hype Machine” to get that 2nd round pick back.

by 9thevolution on Aug 5, 2011 6:37 AM PDT up reply actions

people are assuming that this means they ARE going to trade him

Baalke said they had been getting inquiries, they have a large group of safeties, they’ll have to get rid of a couple, why not see if they can get something for Mays. If they don’t it’s not like they’re going to cut him or trade him for a 7th rounder.

Too many assumptions, all this means is that they’re considering trading him if they get a good offer. If they get a good offer, then there’s nothing to worry about…

by whistlingmountain on Aug 5, 2011 6:43 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't assume they are definitely trading him....

Obviously, if they don’t get an offer that’s worth while, then they’re going to keep him. I’m sure the conversation with Baalke sounded something like, “If we get a good offer, we’re going to take it, but until then, get out there and bust your hump and maybe you’ll get a starting spot.”

After the talk that we heard about Mays from the coaches before the CBA was done, it sounded like they were excited to work with him. The trade talk means they saw he was way too raw to put the time into or they really are getting some calls from teams that would like to have him.

by 9thevolution on Aug 5, 2011 6:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Mays is a project, he was supposed to be very raw, and seeing as how he's in his second year

and all of the defensive coaching is different, he’s basically a rookie again. The 49ers received feelers for Mays and at this point have to feel as though that, if they can get something good for him now, it will be better than having to hold his hand, with so many other hands to hold.

And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it. ... Always a ninja

Saw this last night....

and it should make everyone believe in the ‘patience’ philosophy. All starting caliber players and we got them on the cheap. Then again, we’re comparing our moves to the Raiders, so………..

For correctly guessing that Eric Branch was heading to the Chronicle. Also, I’m fantastically glad that football is back.
