NCAA Top 25 Team Rankings and Some of the Top Prospects
Note: The main reason we look at college football on this site is to help the average fan gain knowledge of potential Niners prospects through the course of the season. It also provides a place where people may feel comfortable with already to discuss such topics.
Before free agency, a lot of 49ers fans were quite worried. Particularly in the first couple of days.
However, after the larger named players were officially off the market, the 49ers began making some moves to patch the holes on both sides of the ball.
With all of the movement came a lot of 1-year contracts. This could be something to keep in mind moving forward in the college football season. As the season progresses, problems will emerge at specific positions. If the 49ers want to primarily build through the draft as they claim, it will be important to notice these holes and take note of the players coming up as well.
Throughout the year (as years past), I will be posting Saturday Game Threads so that those who enjoy NCAA Football can continue to come to Niners Nation and talk about the games and prospects.
After the jump, I've provided the Top 25 Rankings, which officially came out the other day. Below, I have previewed some of the top prospects (at certain positions) to keep an eye on moving forward in to the year.

Here now are some players at the top three areas of concern and that may be still next year. Feel free to chime in below in the comments if you feel as though there may be other areas of concern.
1. DEFENSIVE END
- Jared Crick (Nebraska) 6'4", 290 LBS
- Billy Winn (Boise State) 6'3", 296 LBS
- Izaan Cross (Georgia Tech) 6'4", 294 LBS
*Ray McDonald and Justin Smith will be very solid this year. But with Smith aging and concerns about whether or not McDonald can play every down, it seems as though it would be wise to keep an eye on some of the better prospects at this position this year.
2. CORNERBACK
- Dre Kirkpatrick (Alabama) 6'2", 200 LBS
- Cliff Harris (Oregon) 5'11", 185 LBS
- Chase Minnifield (Virginia) 6'0", 192 LBS
*Yes, the 49ers did just get Carlos Rogers and yes, they did just draft Culliver. But you can never have too much talent at this position as evidence of the Philadelphia Eagles with Asomugha, Rogers-Cromartie, and Samuel. I still think the 49ers can stand to get stronger here.
3. OUTSIDE LINEBACKER
- Quinton Coples (North Carolina) 6'6", 275 LBS
- Andre Branch (Clemson) 6'4", 258 LBS
- Brandon Jenkins (Florida State) 6'3", 252 LBS
*The Niners did just get Aldon Smith this past draft in the 1st Round. And chances are he will be successful. To what level, I have no idea. But... Vic Fangio loves his linebackers and a great pass rush. We are going to see a lot more blitzes this year. I have no doubts about that. Adding any of these three would certainly give defensive coordinators something to stay up late at night in fear of the night before a game against the Niners.

After next season we will probably resign half the 1 year deals to long term
The others will be released and we will use draft picks on those positions.
Gimme 1 round!

Cliff Harris..........Please...........
Harris led the Nation in pass breakups with 23. he also had 6 Ints with a 7th taken away during the NCG against Auburn. Great hips and fluid motion, Harris is a gambler that mostly pays off. On occasion he makes a mistake.
Oh, did I mention he is the best PR in the nation. Tied an NCAA record for 4 TDs on PR in a year.
Oh, wait, there is more…….Harris also didn’t even start the season as a CB or PR. He was in a fill in role as Chip Kelly didn’t think he was ready to be the starter. Fans went crazy with Harris’ great play making ability and he was eventually put into the starting role.
Harris is not only fast, but he likes to go fast….like Ricky Bobby " I wanna go fast"
Like 118 miles an hour fast with a suspended license… Harris is like a Diva in some ways, but he desires to be great at football, and he is. He isn’t killing people and he isn’t doing drugs, so I believe that the off field things will make him lose some stock, I believe that he will be a great cover corner and ball hawk in the NFL.
The 49ers need a great cover corner that make plays, Harris is that guy and so much more.
Is harris still with the team?

Weldon Drew
Currently he is suspend indefinitely
I also think he won’t be going in the first

I am completely with you here...
Watching this guy play is exciting… Was really thinking of how nice it would be to have a playmaker in the niners secondary every Ducks game…
He was a beast in the Championship game too, didn’t shy away from the stage… Would love to see this guy in red and gold…
HAHA!! Classic...

Nice to see some unfamiliar faces in the top 10
When is the last Texas A&M opened a poll in the top 10? Mike Sherman has really turned around those Aggies. Nice to the see the Cowboys of OSU make it just ahead, giving the Big 12 a strong presence in the preseason top 10.
Welcome Nebraska to the Big 10, it should a be entertaining despite the dumb names for the newly formed divisions (Leaders and Legends). Can’t wait for the official start of Hoak-A-Mania in Ann Arbor, the Big Ten has plenty of intrigue this year.
Heck, I wouldn’t be opposed to the 49ers drafting all CBs next year. Carlos is only on a one-year deal anyway, and like Mr. Kerr says, you can never have too many CBs (or DL for that matter). Who will be the best RBs entering the draft next year? Wouldn’t mind seeing another one drafted for that position either.

here's a few off the top of my head:
LaMichael James
Knile Davis
Trent Richardson
Doug Martin
Cyrus Gray
Chris Polk

Chris Polk looks to be the best RB in that bunch

Dunno
Richardson and Martin are up there too. Martin is almost a spitting image of Emmitt Smith.

Im still hating that Helu was taken before our pick in the 4th
getting Hunter was alright with me tho. Helu seemed like he’d fit the WCO offense well. One cut runner with break away speed would of been nice.

Martin looks like a player
And our offensive line is geared to emerge as being exceptional, NYJ’s style, over the next two seasons.
As to Cliff Harris, he WILL likely fall in the draft, and somewhat understandably so, but if Jimmy Smith works out for the Ravens this year, he won’t fall too far. I want him, simply because we have a lot of solid press men, but no exceptional cover corners.

With all the SEC games I get....
I can honestly say Trent Richardson is a man playing with boys. That dude is a BEAST.

Nice write up Drew
As a homer I would have Notre Dame a little higher than they are ranked. Either Tommy Rees or Dayne Crist can hold the job down and do a solid job. You have massive weapons on the outside with Michael Floyd, Theo Reddick and T.J. Jones. Also, look for Cierre Wood to have a huge impact in the backfield.
With Notre Dame’s schedule and their talent on both sides of the ball you are looking at a BCS bid, at the very least.
I want Dre’ Kirkpatrick, but that isn’t happening because SF will be picking in the 20s

Yeah
and Harris may be available in the 20s because of his size. I think he is 5 foot 11 right?

Harris would be more available later because of off the field stuff...
He’d go #1 easily if it were not for that…

Anyone else believe that the offense has more talent than the D?

yup
It may not show up in camp right away because the Defense is always ahead of the O in the beginning, but it will get there when everybody gets on the same page.

I expect the niners to draft a lot of defensive players during the next draft

Cliff Harris or Dre Kirkpatrick
in the first (I hope….) and Janoris Jenkins will be an AWESOME value in the second, maybe third round. Who knows if we see Harris on the field this year, but I’m expecting a big year from Dre.
Repeating something over and over doesn't make it true.
I think we will probably get Kirkpatrick seems more like the size/speed that Baalke is looking for.

Jayron Hosley
This guy is a great corner. He’s a ball hawk, has great hands, good tackling form, and can return kicks. Easily the best corner I’ve seen at Virginia Tech since Flowers. Different analysts have him going in all over the first round. I think he’s a Pro Bowler

Gave you a rec
You always know what you get with a VT corner.
An aggressive athlete who can cover and come up hard against the run.
Wide Receiver
And as an Arkansan, I don’t even have to say who I want it to be, do I?

Childs is a beast... could wind up being better than Julio Jones.

This will be a very telling year
the main concern is the knee right now, and how he bounces back.
