49ers Safety Position: Baffling, To Say The Least?

With reports pouring in that Dashon Goldson agreed to terms on a one year deal for $2 million and Reggie Smith sending out a variety of vague tweets, it's hard to tell what exactly is going on. On Saturday, Smith started practice but then according to Coach Harbaugh, "he felt something that limited him the rest of the day." The 49ers didn't have practice yesterday but it's possible Smith went in to get whatever it was looked at. Here are Reggie Smith's three most recent tweets beginning late last night:

Everything happens 4 a reason & I believe it. Just wished it wouldn't have happened right now. But with God on my side I know it will be OKless than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone Favorite Retweet Reply

Appreciate all the support from everybody. I'll be fine twit fam less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone Favorite Retweet Reply

Star-divide

We don't really know what any of this means at this point. The first tweet sounded ominous, but it very well could have been any piece of bad news, injury or otherwise. In looking through Dashon Goldson's tweet, he sent this one out yesterday before Reggie Smith's first tweet:

I hate physicals...well the urine sample part at leastless than a minute ago via Twitter for BlackBerry® Favorite Retweet Reply

I'd imagine the physical was in relation to his 49ers contract. It doesn't tell us anything about the reasoning, but maybe we'll learn a bit more today. The 49ers beat writers are able to speak with players before and after practice, and I'd imagine they'll try and speak with Smith and/or Goldson, among others. At some point there has to be some kind of information that gets either officially from Smith or a member of the front office or via some sort of leak.

As it currently stands, the 49ers have sizable corps of safeties including Reggie Smith, Dashon Goldson, Donte Whitner, Madieu Williams, C.J. Spillman, Taylor Mays. They've also got guys like Curtis Taylor, Chris Maragos, and even Colin Jones, although Jones is expected to primarily play in a special teams role.

With all these safeties, how do they sort this mess out? Injury news would clear some of it up, so I guess we'll just have to wait for more on that.

Last year we kept 5 safeties including ST guys

Assuming we keep 5 again — Williams, Whitner, Goldson are in.

Smith is in if he stays off IR.

The last spot that we use for ST will be filled by Spillman or Jones. I think Spillman.

Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.

I wasn't suggesting a comp between Taylor and Reggie

You said "huge"

and I took that as “physically large” and “didn’t know how big he was”.

I’m just saying that a difference of10 pounds and 1 inch don’t seem “huge.” Obviously he’s heavier, but I thought you were talking McBLT/Jamarcus levels here

just for a safety he looks huge

I was caught off-guard by his size at TC. I was thinking “who the hell is that guy”.

by goatfather on Aug 8, 2011 10:12 AM PDT up reply actions

Meh,

Can he play football? If we’re just going to keep a rare physical specimen then we might as well keep Mays.

by Ougadas on Aug 8, 2011 10:17 AM PDT up reply actions

What would you do with Mays?

coach him up in coverage, or move him to LB?

by brundylop on Aug 8, 2011 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Don't like either option

But if neither can play football and we’re keeping 1 based on being huge, Mays is bigger.

But I’m not saying Taylor can’t, just that he hasn’t gotten enough playing time for me to tell. I’m sure Fangio has a good idea, but I don’t.

by Ougadas on Aug 8, 2011 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Uh, I'm not sure if you read the question right

Although your input on Taylor v. Mays (haha) is interesting.

There’s always been talk about Mays converting to LB… what are your thoughts on that

by brundylop on Aug 8, 2011 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions

Not so great

He takes horrible angles and while he has great straight line speed his agility and change of direction are crippled by his size. He’s alright at launching himself into receivers catching the ball but his tackling fundamentals are very poor. If he adds 10-15 pounds he’ll be the right size to play OLB, but then his speed will suffer and his already poor change of direction will get worse.

Maybe he could work as a pass rush specialist with a lot of work — I just don’t see spending a couple years on developing a 3rd down rusher when they aren’t really in short supply.

by Doni S on Aug 8, 2011 1:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe this reflects an overall strategy

To keep more Ss than CSs on the roster in an increasingly pass heavy league. To have versatile guys who can cover from the S position and play up in the box. Just look at Culliver, this admins first DB draft pick; a safety converted to CB.

Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.

by goatfather on Aug 8, 2011 9:51 AM PDT reply actions

myeah, maybe

if they get better at CB, on the edges, they can have more SS types deep. But eventually you have to blitz and play coverage and teams will make you cover their guys. Having bunch of non-cover Safeties wouldn’t bode well for that. Reggie Smith is a cover guy, Dashon, not too much but he could look better than he has in the past in that regard. C.Taylor seems somewhat versatile but we don’t see enough of him to know for sure.

Sorta but not really

Often your FS will have to step down and man up on a slot receiver leaving the SS with deep center-field.

Having any Safety that can’t cover is a liability in this league. With our ILBs I wouldn’t be too concerned about having a thumper SS in the box.

by Ougadas on Aug 8, 2011 10:04 AM PDT up reply actions

not just in the box

Rather have the coverage skills

Making tackles on short zone throws isn’t a hard skill to find.

Making highlight hits and blowing people up might be, but I don’t care about ego plays — they are the ones more likely to completely whiff on the tackle and give up the big play.

by Tre9er on Aug 8, 2011 10:45 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree

I’m just saying that with the way modern offenses are putting more speed on the field, any safety who can’t cover is a liability and will be a major weakness that the dominant offenses will target again and again.

If you can’t find a guy that can do both like the Polamalu and Mikells of the league, suffer a bit against the run.

by Ougadas on Aug 8, 2011 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions

there's a difference between a roaming Safety and Cover Safety though

Guys like Whitner and Goldson can make plays on the ball but aren’t turning and running in man-to-man down the field with anyone. They will have to play coverage at times, but you bet on your pass-rush in those situations. It’s why blitzing is a risk. Still, they’re fast and athletic, which is better than tough-and-slow

The sky isn't falling. It was just an acorn.

yes

Goldson has some range and athleticism but not great instincts and pure cover skills like fluid hips, good feet, etc. He and Whitner can make plays due to pass rush causing errant throws, etc. but they’re not good turning and running down the field with a WR

by goatfather on Aug 8, 2011 10:02 AM PDT up reply actions

I think you hit the nail on the head...

At least two teams in our division will play a lot of multiple receiver sets…Rams (with McDaniels as the new OC) and Cards.

Reggie was drafted as a CB, and then moved to S. Smith could act as a 3rd Safety on Nickel downs and Culliver will probably get into the mix as well. These are guys with S and CB experience. Considering that the 49ers will probably play a lot of Zone coverage, it may benefit them to have these free ranging Safeties on these downs.

I don’t see Mays in the picture at all…not after what went down last week.

I dont consider the number of safeties they had last year very relevant. Different coach, different D coordinator, different players.

The question is how many will Harbaugh keep in his first year? It could be 5, but it could also be 6, or just 4, or even 7 if they keep 1-2 dedicated ST players that happen to be safeties.

How many safeties did he have at Stanford last year? That might be a better indicator of how much he values safeties, and therefore the number he will keep this year.

Problem is if you keep more than 5 safeties

You have to keep less somewhere else.

2 NT, 4 DE, 3 ILB, 5 OLB, 6 CB.

If you keep 6 you have to cut one of those down, if you keep 7 you have to cut two.

I’d tend to agree, but I can’t see an offensive minded coach having just a blocking TE on the roster

Possibly,

But seeing as Delanie and Vernon will be playing a lot in 2 TE formations, a back-up TE will be included imo(not a pure blocking TE)

Cloherty

I knew I was forgetting someone

problem with this condensed schedule is having far too many things happening at once. In a normal off year I could focus on free agency, then focus on camp bodies and who might make the roster. This year I have to focus on everything at once.

I’m having the same problem evaluating the safety position, all the articles have been about it today and I keep leaving people out.

by reedkrase on Aug 8, 2011 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions

that's why safety is so hard

Clearly Whitner, Goldson, Williams and Smith are going to make the cut, but with the Mays attempted trade, Holcomb injury, Jones being drafted as an ST guy, Curtis Taylor continuing to give a good performance, Spillman a proven ST guy, I just have no idea how the position is going to shape up.

by Ougadas on Aug 8, 2011 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Not a whole lot of room for creativity

22 starters, 3ST, 22 back-ups (3d string QB but no backup for FB) and you’re left with room for 6 extras.

by reedkrase on Aug 8, 2011 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

There are plenty of permutations that could allow you to keep 6 safeties, especially if you just treat all of your 2nd and 3rd stringers as just DBs. That is especially likely if your CBs arent very good and your Ss are.

But that’s not the point. The question is how many will Harbaugh keep? And his past rosters are more relevant than Mike Singletary’s and Greg Manuski’s from last year.

by uspsuperman on Aug 8, 2011 10:47 AM PDT up reply actions

I’d prefer Reggie and Whitner; but I am almost certain by the end of training camp, Dashon and Whitner will be the starters. Remember that this is just a guy tweeting.

Heck – this is just an athlete tweeting. He’s probably not thinking about it from our perspective – eager fans ready to read into every little morsel of information.

It may mean almost nothing. When athletes tweet, you’re not getting the same level of careful management that you get with official press releasees. Teams often avoid giving comment right away precisely to avoid this type of rampant speculation and near panic.

Everybody needs to chill. This could easily be nothing but a huge overreaction after he blew something out of proportion because he wasn’t really thinking about how it would land. We don’t know enough.

by Ronaldinho on Aug 8, 2011 10:47 AM PDT reply actions

I think we’re going to see vastly superior secondary play compared to last year.

Goldson or Smith will be the FS and Whitner will be the SS.

Rogers and Spencer will be the CBs.

All of them will play with more confidence and skill. On that note, I think that’s why Spencer looked so bad at times last year. It’s like he lost his confidence and played scared. I remember in 2009 he generally looked really good. The Colts game stands out in my mind because he did such a great job on Reggie Wayne.

We will be able to run nice Nickel and Dime packages on 3rd down and we’ll see more pressure sacks and coverage sacks.

Jim Harbaugh doesn't just WANT winners, he MAKES them!

by Adusoron on Aug 8, 2011 10:51 AM PDT reply actions

To expand on my point...

I think Singletary was such an imposing figure he had many elements of the team playing so tightly that the guys were afraid to make a mistake. You can’t play that way because you’re over-analyzing and making the game harder for yourself because you’re afraid when you make a mistake, you’re going to have Singletary screaming at you on the sidelines (which we saw way too much of).

+1

At first I thought it was important to bring him back due to the lack of experience at our safety spot but after the addition of Whitner/Williams, and the positive reports of Reggie Smith…I was pretty willing to let him walk. It doesn’t help that he sounds pretty arrogant and he’s full of himself. He loves to refer to himself in the 3rd person too which is kinda annoying especially when he’s had one good year.

Plus, Reggie just seems like a better person than Goldson. Much easier to root for people like that.

Depth, yes

What happens if there is a major injury? What if Smith makes the PUP? Wise move, a one year contract. Whitner has had injury issues [not last year, but every other year if I remember rightly].

And Goldson is exactly the guy who will be hungry going into a contract year. And if he can’t read the writing on the wall, he’ll be gone. Seems like a complete win for the Niners.

Don't think Harbaugh likes Clausen

After a Notre Dame victory over Stanford three years ago, Clausen was acting like a jerk and then wanted to shake Harbaugh’s hand. Harbaugh almost gave him the hand in the form of a fist to the jaw. [I love that old NFL story of how Jim Kelly, through the media of course, gave Harbaugh some crap about not being tough , playing tough. The next time Harbaugh saw him, he walked right up and slugged Kelly in the mouth. That was the last time Kelly questioned his toughness, at least out loud.] Maybe Harbaugh is over that experience with Clausen, but I don’t believe Clausen is a Harbaugh type QB or man.
