NCAA Football Game Thread: Week 2
Well, it was a great week one last weekend for college football. Some great matchups, some upsets, and some key performances. But, that was last week, and this is a brand new week, so let's look at some key matchups, and those we should watch out for.
#3 Alabama visits #23 Penn State.
I've always believed Penn State is one of the hardest places to go into and win. Of course Alabama has many key players, notable ones. Guys like Trent Richardson, Mark Barron and Don'ta Hightower. But here are some others I am looking out for.
NT Josh Chapman, a big force in the middle, at only 6'0 tall, but around 316 pounds, he is a wrecking machine. He is a guy not only should the entire league look at, but our 49ers should definitely take notice. If Sopoaga doesn't prove to be the answer, I can see Chapman right in the mix at NT for the 49ers.
FS Robert Lester, this guy intrigues me. This junior, wearing #37, while not playing much in 2009, he had a terrific 2010 season. 8 interceptions, showing he is a ball hawk FS. I want you to look at him, mainly because we aren't all set at FS. Goldson and Madieu Williams don't see like the long term answer.
Now as for Penn State, the only guy I look at for us is potential NT Devon Hill. 307 lbs, would be a nice fit at NT.
While I like Penn State, I just can't see them overcoming that dominating defense of Alabama.
#12 South Carolina at Georgia
Let me say this, South Carolina has some key players to watch, and a really good offense. I look at mainly two guys. WR Alshon Jeffery, a dynamic WR. The junior is a catching machine, 88 receptions in 2010, over 1,500 yards receiving, and 9 touchdowns. He seems like a guy who will go up and get the ball anytime needed.
As I mentioned with Floyd, if we have a down year, or someone doesn't show up, I could see us targeting Jeffery, but it would take a lot to get him.
My second player is CB Stephen Gilmore. He isn't a ball hawk per say. But he has the ability to be one. Look for him to be good in coverage.
Georgia's main guy is Brandon Boykin, I look forward to seeing how many times we see the Boykin/Jeffery matchup. I think Jeffery will be the winner, but I can definitely see Boykin getting in there and making some good plays.
I see South Carolina getting the close win here.
My final game to watch is, BYU at #24 Texas.
While BYU's top prospect I look at is Matt Reynolds, a OT, standing near 6'4 and over 300 lbs, he might have a challenge. I am looking forward to seeing how Reynolds does against some quick Texas linebackers. Keenan Robinson and Emmanuel Acho come to mind. As well as a tweener in Alex Okafor.
I see BYU actually getting the win here, for some reason, I think this team has some potential.
Well there you guys have it, I hope everyone enjoys a great weekend of football.

Kirk Cousins vs FAU
As of now he’s 10/13
Making him 28/35 on the year
That’s an 80% completion percentage.
Back on board. Now time to trade Mays for Clausen
THE perfect possession receiver
Iowa’s Marvin McNutt. He’s got incredible hands.

not to mention
why wouldn’t you want a jersey with MCNUTT on the back?

Miss St vs Auburn is turning out to be a great game.
Pretty much 2 ranked teams playing here. I’m not a fan of Auburn, but I do love how they constantly flip the middle finger at all their critics and the BCS. Last year by going undefeated and with all the great come from behind shockers. This year they win their opener, get taken out of the top 25. Come back this week and look like they’re about to take out #16 Miss St. That’s swag right there!

Interesting stuff in Ohio right now, too.
Toledo beginning to self-destruct, though. Their QB looks really pretty awful. I just want them to make it interesting in the 4th.

Why is OSU ranked so high???
New QB, new set of WRs (due to suspension and draft), new set of RBs (due to draft)
I’m pretty sure they’re missing some pieces on defense too, but I’m too lazy to look it up
I swear it’s like the BCS sets the Big-Ten up for failure. We’re the conference that has to go up against three SEC teams in our biggest bowl games (Rose, Outback, and Capital bowl). Then people always look down on us when we lose. I’m not saying it wasn’t fair that OSU was put up against “the almighty” Toledo, but when you look at the rankings later down the road, people are going to ask why this game was so close or why they lost. And the conclusion people will jump to is because the Big-Ten sucks, which is not entirely true.
Back on board. Now time to trade Mays for Clausen
Bauserman seems like an interesting QB to me.
That said, you’re right how totally weird it is how well they’re ranked.

Forgot, New HC too
I haven’t seen OSU yet this season. But I follow the Big-Ten hardcore, so I’ll likely take a look at Bauserman soon.

OSU was going to close it out with 3 minutes left in the game, but they fumbled, Toledo made a QB change, and now Toledo is running a great, great 2-minute drive.

And it’s been some insane amount of time since an unranked team beat OSU in Ohio. Like, 30 years or something.

If you have Comcast, do you have the sports package? I think you have to have that to get it, but can’t quite recall.

agreed louisville got a long way to go
as for the Heisman it’s a popularity contest. Although his stats say he should be in the running right now. He’s not on a well-known team to be even considered for winning it, even if he did well thoughout the entire year.

Cadinal defense is looking good. The starting D has not been scored on as yet.
But that pass from Luck to Fleener for a TD was a beauty.
Arizona offense will provide more of a opposition to the Stanford D. It’s a night game. Weird sh*t happens in the desert at night.
I don’t know how they’re winning this game. Which is to say, I don’t know how Colorado has committed enough badly timed penalties to let Cal’s offense sustain those scoring drives.

Sofele really is the lone bright spot in this game. Even Allen, who I think is by far the most exciting player on the offense now, has been pretty disappointing today.

Is he the starting back? Thought he would disappear in the Pac 12 with all the great backs they have had. Great kid should of stayed in state

Maynard
Seems like a boom/bust type of QB
by David Fucillo on Sep 10, 2011 4:00 PM PDT up reply actions
From what I saw this week and last, it looks like there are two fundamental things going on with Maynard. One is that he doesn’t seem very good about his reads. The other is that he doesn’t really ever lead his receivers, because his accuracy just doesn’t seem good enough to.
I think he’s going to be trouble when the schedule opens up. Hopefully not too much trouble.
