Golden Nuggets: 49ers Better Than I Expected
I had a good time yesterday - honestly. The 49ers didn't win the game, but if we're going to be honest here today, I didn't expect them to. Hell, I expected an awful lot worse than what we saw. I need to go back and review the game on my DVR, since I was in the crowd, so I don't know just how specific players looked. My limited tidbits thusfar: Tarell Brown got abused again. I'm nowhere near the Tramaine Brock bandwagon like our good friend Drew K, but I have to say right now that I don't want Brown starting next week. If that means Brock in lieu of an injured Shawntae Spencer, then so be it. So be it.
There was a Cowboys fan painted all blue with glitter and a construction helmet on in front of me. He had a sign that said "WTF ROMO", with the 'F' branching out into "FOX", hoping he'd get on TV. Unfortunately, he was up in the nosebleeds (yep, when I'm not in the pressbox, I sit in the cheap seats). So that was cool ... the idiotic new security measures at the 49ers game, however, was not cool. I'm to the point where I want to sell my season tickets. They've actually reached a point where their new measures are harassment. I'm not a satisfied customer. Let's just get to your links, folks.

Better than i expected, worse than i hoped.
I would have like to lose the game trying to win it, not trying not to lose it (i hope i’m clear)
I don’t understand why he chose the 3 points over the first down. Even if you don’t trust your offense, at least 3 runs hoping Gore breaks for a big gain or a TD. And a FG if he doesn’t.
And VD really needs to get the ball.
-Lazy fool- ;)
Brown and Brock are not good options.
I would almost rather have Culliver in there is Spencer isn’t 100% to be honest

Maiocco's take.
Maiocco must really have it in for A. Smith. The guy’s top 2 receivers are out, the pathetic as always O-line gives up SIX count em SIX sacks, gives an aging Gore nothing to work with and Smith has a 99 passer rating with a 2 to 1 TD to Int ratio and the story is not about the O-line, missing offensive players, bad run game or AWFUL coaching mistakes in play calling and game management. Some things never change. It’s no wonder A. Smith won’t give any info to Maiocco. Harbaugh is about as creative as Singletary which is akin to saying the ocean is a little bit wet. Love the kid gloves that Harbaugh has been handled with so far by Maiocco, just like Jed York, Maiocco won’t ask any hard questions about the actual story when it involves guys he needs to continue to pander to. A. Smith somehow stuck around for another year and now Maiocco can’t get info from the guy. Gonna have to keep looking at other sources for balanced coverage.

I agree , thought Alex played a solid game once again , Six sacks would give me pause to take points off the board too ...
… i keep hearing that the reason Harbaugh wouldn’t take points off the board is because of Alex , but for mr it’s more because of the O- LINE , thought the Offense as a whole played better then last week ( 24 ) points against a good D …. D played good in the first half , but once again Four big plays cost them the game …Over all they played better then last week , just as i hoped , they keep getting better week in week out , just being real folks ..!!

Low Expectations Suck
Sorry, but I’m just not willing to find excuses anymore. The notion that they played better than I thought they would (and still sucked) isn’t cutting it. What they showed out there was embarrassing. There’s now two ways to split it. All the Alex Smith supporters out there (every year I can’t fathom why you continue to support him), please give it up. He’s not an above average quarterback, and never will be. Either you can cut it or you can’t. Please stop talking about the playbook. There’s always a reason why it could have gone better. The O-line, the secondary surely all play their part. But you need a good, if not great, QB to win in this league. That Cam Newton kid might just have it. Losers always whine about doing their best – winners go home and f*** the prom queen.

I agree
Alex did make good decisions when he had time. That TD to Williams was a thing a beauty.
I believe in excellence. I believe in Alex Smith.
not fumbling when Ware got him from behind
was unbelievably good

That was beauty!
I root for Alex because I root for underdogs and victims. I dont want to debate but hes no longer a victim anymore and is getting a fair chance. he will produce this year.
Agreed
Finally a good game to watch – gut-wrenching to lose though.
I believe Harbaugh made the right decisions throughout the game. Keep the points on the board and have faith in your defense that they can keep the opposing offense from scoring twice. Easy to second guess, but still a reasonable decision at the time.
Disagreed
I believe Harbaugh made the wrong decisions in the second half and he again made no half-time adjustments or changes. Anyone who thinks a 10 point lead against Romo and the Cowboys with almost the entire fourth qtr left is using myopic logic. The Cowboys came back because the head ball coach of the 9ers played uber conservative for the umpteenth time this decade! Let’ see the freakin WCO please!!! Oh and maybe call 85’s number a bit more! Even with the 9er’s best 2 WRs out, the 9ers are still talented on offense. It was a good game until Harbaugh mailed it in. The ball on the 22 with a fresh set of downs! Even if they just ran power up the middle 3 times and kicked a FG it would have at least used some clock. No excuses this game for the head coach, O-line and penalties accross the board. Brooks lining up in the neutral zone was a total bone head maneuver that was essentially a turnover resulting in 7 points, lots of blame to go around, except at QB for once!
To be old and wise you must first be young and stupid.
I didn't like the FG
now that I see it was a 15 yard penalty, not just 5. The ball would have been at the 22
Even if you do nothing but Gore dives on 3 plays, that takes significant time off the clock and sets you up for an easy field goal.

You bring about a good point ...
taking time off the clock would have helped a good deal.

He has to change his approach on running
Use Dixon and Hunter more. If not for better results than at least to strive for them
I'm hurt but...
We are playing waaaaay better then last year. I would have taken the first down just to burn some time, but these are the kind of games we can learn from and hopefully benefit us in the long run… Still the pain of losing and getting tv time for the wrong reason
I'm in business of giving the business and business is booming!
Tale of two halves
For the first two games we have absolutly crushed the hawks and boys in the first half, scoring 16 and 14 points is the second quarter and only giving up 7 to the boys…with the help of penalties. When the second half comes around, our defense seems to go into prevent and we all know what happens when teams try to just run out the clock. Ginn saved us week one, but not this week. Our opponents seem to make the right adjustments to shut down our offense…not that hard, but more importantly to start moving on the defense. We have given up 37 points in the second half and only scoring 13 (taking out Ginn’s returns).

if tom brady doesnt have 5-7seconds to throw...
He’s not throwing for 500 yards. Can Newton might have “it” but what he also has is a better an offensive line. You are crazy to think that Alex could have played better with what he had. Both starting wideouts gone and a horrid o-line, not to mention he was facing probably the best pass rusher in the league. When they gave him time all he did was move the chains. He can’t call the plays. for the coach and he cant block for all the. lineman. Give him some credit. He made. some nice passes and even avoided a few. disastrous plays(when they sacked him, I. don’t know how he held the ball.) We need to place the blame where it should be. No o-line and no secondary and its been that way for awhile, its just nobody notices because your too focused on the quarterback. He had his team up 24-14, his coaches and teamates let him down not the other way around.get real
