Final 49ers 53-Man Roster Projection

Now that the 49ers 2011 preseason schedule is complete, the team will make their final roster cuts between now and early Saturday afternoon as they look to cut down to a 53-man roster. After last night's game, Coach Harbaugh mentioned how a lot of guys made decisions more difficult with their performance.

While that might be the case for whether to sign a guy to the practice squad, in going through a final 53-man roster projection, I just couldn't see any changes. Alex Joseph had a solid game yesterday but I think he had too far to come back and without first or early second string reps, it just wasn't going to happen. I'd argue my toughest remaining choice was whether Konrad Reuland or Nate Lawrie makes the team as the third tight end. Lawrie got second team snaps last night while Reuland came in later, but I still think Reuland is the pick.

I continue to believe Moran Norris makes the team. People might not like it, but considering he got the first team snaps early yesterday, I just don't see him getting cut. I could very well be wrong, but I'm not seeing it.

And Demarcus Dobbs remains on my 53-man roster after another strong performance. I was on the fence between Dobbs and Tukuafu heading into the Texans game, but Dobbs has brought a level of consistency that needs to be rewarded. I'm not sure where he'd fit into the rotation, but he's shown he can make some kind of legitimate impact. I'd say that would give the defensive line some solid depth heading into the season.

Head after the jump to view my final projection and feel free to criticize and offer up your own before cuts start coming down.

Can't disagree with any of those

Immediate areas of weakness that jump out are NT and FB. Other than that I’m pretty happy with the depth chart, well, except for QB.

It will be interesting to see if we add a QB or FB once other teams make their cuts. It seems to me that the FB position would be the easiest position to fill.

Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.

Areas of weakness

I think FB seems pretty solid, really. Norris is a pretty big punching bag around here, but Miller looks like he’ll be solid, if given enough reps and practice. I agree on NT though, it’ll be a tough season if Soaps doesn’t step up. I guess RJF could always fill in.

OLB looks a little questionable to me, though. We really only have one starter there, in Brooks. Haralson has always seemed a bit underwhelming to me, and Aldon Smith looks like he’ll be good in time, but is he ready to start right away? Also, OLB man-to-man coverage is going to be pretty shaky.

by Mycroft's Brother on Sep 2, 2011 8:43 AM PDT up reply actions

OLB may be an area where the F.O. scans the waiver wire closely. Did that ex-Steeler, Gibson who the Niners cut recently get picked up by any other team?

Anyone concerned about

LaMarr Woodley in pass coverage?
Tamba Hali in pass coverage?
DeMarcus Ware in pass coverage?

You always get more out of your pass rusher when they are going after the passer. Putting them in coverage is the kind of getting “too cute” that other teams take advantage of.

Really it should be expected

The only thing I worry about is that motion. It may not make a difference on most passes because he can make up for it with his velocity. However that endzone INT he through got me thinking about the touch passes. It seems obvious that those passes will take longer to deliver because of the windup. I don’t know how he’s going to make up for that.

Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.

by goatfather on Sep 2, 2011 8:35 AM PDT up reply actions

what worries me

Is that generally he looks comfortable in the pocket. I dont think its an issue of defenses or the offensive scheme overwhelming him, his throws have just been terrible. Throwing into double and triple coverages, and seemingly regressing from where he was his senior year in terms of putting the right touch on the ball. He definitely has the benefit of the doubt at this point, but I find myself cringing every time the ball is in the air. And yes, that two-point throwing motion is very unsettling.

why practice squad?

who else would we move up on the roster? McBLT? Leave Kaep on the roster and let him watch Alex Smith for 1 year on everything you should NOT do as an NFL QB, then during the off-season, he can work on not doing any Smith traits and be successful next year.

I wasn’t serious about the practice squad comment. Just a reflection on how bad he’s looked. He’d be best served as #3 on the depth chart right now.

Re: Norris ... not sure what you're watching; I just don't see that there's much competition there.

Granted, Norris has experience and Miller doesn’t … yet. But, Norris seems to make so few really effective blocks … he looks like he’s running around trying to find somebody to hit, rather than seeking out a specific target.

Conversely, Miller is much quicker and really attacks his target; and, he can catch and run with the ball. Frankly, given the fact that he’s learning a new position on the other side of the ball, I’ve been absolutely amazed by Miller’s performance and development so far. He’s “getting it” much faster (i.e, fewer reps due to shortened camp) than Brit Miller did. Does he make mistakes? Sure. But I’d much rather watch mistakes of youthful overaggresiveness while learning on the fly than watch Norris wollow and try to hold on.

Looks good

I would replace Person w/ Wragge.

by UncleHulka on Sep 2, 2011 8:38 AM PDT reply actions

thing is

We know what Wragge can do. We don’t know what Person’s upside is. We don’t really need Wragge as a backup with Snyder and Boone being there so you’d like to keep Person on the team by keeping him on the 53.

Harbaugh will find a QB and he will succeed.

by goatfather on Sep 2, 2011 8:43 AM PDT up reply actions

Wragge

If I remember right, Wragge wasn’t on the 53-man roster to start last year, either. No one signed him, until we got hit hard by injuries and called him up. I’d be a little surprised if he weren’t in the same situation this year, waiting for a call. I feel bad for the guy, though, he does deserve to be at least a backup on some team.

by Mycroft's Brother on Sep 2, 2011 8:45 AM PDT up reply actions

This is one of my primary internal debates...

I originally kept Wragge on my 53 and put Person on my PS, which I would still do IF I felt that Person would clear waivers… after watching him closely last night, I no longer feel that he’ll clear waivers, so I now keep Person, and reluctantly waive Wragge.

Also, I only keep 1 FB, and that’s Miller.

Does anyone yet know the extent of Kristick’s injury? If he’s “good to go”, I keep him in place of the 2nd FB.

After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.

by OldJock on Sep 2, 2011 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions

ILB and Ziggy

Do most teams carry 4 ILBs? I guess in a 3-4 it’s not a bad idea, but I don’t seem to remember. Though Costanzo’s probably making it more for his special teams play.

Man, it’s a bummer that Ziggy’s most likely not going to make the team. It’s sad to see a player finally get his chance to play like he did last year, and get injured before he can show anything. I hope he catches on somewhere, if not here.

There really aren’t any names on this team I’d like to see cut (well, maybe Norris, but I can live with him on the team). Last year, I remember being frustrated by players like Demetrius Evans making it, mediocre veterans whose production probably could have been replaced by rookies with upside. This group looks solid.

Different players are chosen for different reasons

The original plan was to bring Kaepernick along slowly in his rookie season. This appears to be what the 49ers are doing. Everyone knew he’d be a project, everyone expected his development to take more than 5 weeks when he was drafted. Can’t see why you’re upset with a player for being exactly what we knew he was when we drafted him.

To be the eventual starter? I think not

Few QBs drafted in the fifth round and later are targeted as QBsOTF; the Niners were hoping to beat the odds and maybe craft a serviceable young backup to Hill. Their problem was that Nate needed a QB coach, not the Singletary/Raye show.

Interesting that the Colts, who were interested in Nate but took Curtis Painter instead, signed Nate during TC this year…and promptly cut him loose.

This was my observation, as well. As well as Aldon played, his sacks and QB pressures were

Dobbs will still needs some time to develop as the intensity will go up as the season starts

but he has all you could look for in a 3-4 DE from the physical tools perspective & has some serious nastiness, he just needs some time to grow under the tutelage of Jim Tomsula & Justin Smith

Don’t suppose they’d give Dobbs a chance if McDonald struggles to get any pressure on the QB?

McDonald will never have big sack numbers, but if he can pressure the QB and be solid on the run

then he is definitely doing his job. Plus I truly believe that they will give McDonald time to see if the added playing time would increase his production if it doesnt then you could see them more to a rotational system where Dobbs & McDonald would see time at the other DE spot opposite Justin Smith

His job is to get after the QB. If he’s in coverage enough times to make large negative impact then something is majorly wrong with our defensive scheme.

ok, how many years of “in the future” does this guy have left? What’s the hold up? I like his name too, but if he doesn’t have it, he doesn’t have it. And if he has it, he’ll be on the roster, by hook or by crook.

Me thinks they’ll rotate because I just can’t see McDonald out there the entire game. He’d probably be gassed by 1/2 time. Personally I think Dobbs is gonna be better than RJF @ DE…but they’re both pretty good in their own right. More so for Dobbs because he went undrafted. Not sure how that happened…

McDonald's conditioning has supposedly improved

and he was one of our most valuable situational players last year (against kicks, in particular). I don’t think you can start a UDFA rookie. Dobbs has earned his roster spot, but he earned it playing against mostly scrubs.

I don’t believe it should be such a clear cut thing. I mean “starting” should not be the question. How much playing time each should get should be the question.

I think it all depends on the situation. Aldon is a better pass rusher, but Haralson is probably less of a liability in passing situations. But you have to be careful with subbing in and out because teams will take notice.

Opposing teams thoughts: Oh, Aldon is in, they’re bringing the heat. We can audible and exploit that.

Anyway, I feel like Smith will be up to speed by midseason or so.

I'm curious as to why Philip Davis, a UFA from Tulane with NO fanfare, is considered a

“disappointment”. You bring him in to see if there’s something there that hasn’t shown so far, give him a shot, it becomes apparent that he’s a “cut below”, so you waive him. There’s nothing in that scenario that defines “disappointment” (except maybe to him, but not to me).

After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.

I just dont think Norris makes the roster

if they could always use Reuland and convert him into an H-back/TE and have Miller as the primary FB. Reuland has pretty good hands & has shown the ability to be a good blocker.

I’d rather go into the season with either Tufuaku or Joseph then Norris. They would provide more in the terms of depth than Norris & could provide an impact on ST

Understand he was beneficial to this team last year but, that was last year & this is this year. What more has he brought to the table thats different from last? I do believe between Tramine Brock, Phillip Adams,Chris Culliver, Madiew Williams & the like they can replace what he is doing on special teams. As for him playing backup safety he really disappointed me yesterday with his play being out of position on playing angles in certain running & passing downs yesterday.

His spot can free up space for a WR, RB, ILB or more importantly a DL that’s been playing well like Dobbs

Some thoughts on Fooch's final 53 and other roster related matters ...

1. Sorry, I just don’t see Norris making it this year … thank God. Why? Miller is learning and developing at a rapid pace … give him the reps (in games since camp was so short) now. He’s going to pass Norris by sometime this season anyway … let’s just get it over with.

2. With Crabs needing some time to come back from the injury, I think that we have to keep 6 WRs (including Crabs) to open the season. Cut Norris and add another receiver, with one of two choices: (1) Ziegler (if recovered enough) or Long, or (2) a WR from the waiver wire on Sunday … here are four potential cuts that could help us: (a) San Diego’s Seyi Ajorotutu (6-3, 211, Fresno State), (b) Oakland’s Denarius Moore (6-0, 195, Tennessee), © Atlanta’s Brandyn Harvey (6-4, 205, Villanova), or (d) Oakland’s Eddie McGee (6-4, 210, Illinois).

3. I think that Will Tukuafu makes the 53 before Ian Williams, who I think will be put on the PS.

4. Just for giggles, how about Scott Tolzien (if the Chargers cut him) instead of Josh McCown? Naw, the veteran makes more sense in our situation; but Tolzien sure looked good, didn’t he?

5. Positions where we should consider waiver wire cuts as an opportunity to upgrade over the backups we already have: WR (see 2. above), NT #2 (versus RJF), OLB #4 (versus Applewhite), CB (versus Brown).

by 49erFanSince1950 on Sep 2, 2011 11:33 AM PDT reply actions

Norris is going to make it.

Mark my words. Miller is a rookie, position changing, and a bit light in the fanny to boot. He’s looked good in preseason, but he still needs time before he’s ready for the big time.

I do think keeping 6 WR is a good idea, but I’m not convinced any of our guys are worth keeping. Let’s see who shakes loose.

Williams won’t make it to the PS, I don’t think, but he didn’t look especially good in preseason. He got pushed around a lot. Tuk did too, though, but Tuk is a favorite of Tomsula, so that may give him an edge.

Tolzien DID look great, but I don’t think he adds anything to the 49ers at this point; he’ll only muddy the waters and take practice reps away from Kaep. We need to pick a project QB and stick with him for a few years, instead of abandoning him at the first sign of struggle (see Nate Davis).

RJF is not getting cut. Applewhite showed some spark last night and I think he could stick around. CB is definitely an area with potential to improve, though.

I don’t.

Demarcus Dobbs and Konrad Reuland need to be on the 53-man roster. They have every chance of turning into highly valuable players for the Niners. Konrad Reuland looks the the third down receiver who will keep drives going, and Demarcus Dobbs looks like he just might be awesome on the defensive line.
