49ers Meet Bengals In Bizarro World
The San Francisco 49ers travel east to face the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday and it is sort of a bizarro kind of world as the Bengals have several former 49ers in the fold. Nate Clements is starting at cornerback, Manny Lawson is starting at outside linebacker in their 4-3 defense and Taylor Mays is a backup safety, although he has been injured the first two weeks.
The 49ers have their own Bengals connections with the most notable being Justin Smith. Having signed prior to the 2008 season, Smith will be making his first start against his former team (they last faced each other in 2007). Along with Smith, Madieu Williams was originally drafted by the Bengals in 2004 and Ahmad Brooks was selected by the Bengals in the 2006 supplemental draft.
Speaking of former 49ers, Nate Clements chatted with the 49ers media earlier today and discussed his decision to leave (49ers offer wasn't in the best interest of his family) and what he saw in the new 49ers offense and Alex Smith in particular. His best line might have been the mention of how just seeing them move guys around was a change from the past. It says a lot about previous offensive philosophies when moving players around in formations is a noticeable change.

Must win
We are playing a must win game this week. When you look at our schedule to get to 8 wins we need to win this game. We match up very well against these guys. Our front seven can stuff their running game and force a rookie into situations he is not comfortable with. The key will be OL play. If we protect Alex and can run we got this.
How fun will it be to see Nate get burned? I always liked him but he lost a step after his injury and then couldn’t play up on receivers. Add that with his always biting on the double hitch and you can see why we cut him. He can tackle though.
Good post..
but I liked Matt Barrows picture better.
This will be a low-scoring defensive struggle.
It’ll be real ugly, — can’t allow out kids to watch it. Harbaugh will pull out a few new plays out of the book but lack of sufficient practice will show up in implementation mistakes, esp. by O line. Niners will eke out a win.
If freak'en Manny Lawson sacks Alex...
after barely being able to snef a sack here during his 49er career, then something really is wrong with our O-Line!
And if we can’t abuse Nate Clements with some deep throws, then the Head Coach needs to be questioned.
Lastly, speaking of sacks… i hope Almad Brooks (ex-Bengal) is jacked up to cause complete havoc & destruction to his old team.
Harbough has to call plays as if Alex Smith is Andrew Luck...
and trust a positive play from Alex just as he would from Luck..
My point being…. Harbough has to be aggressive with his play calling, not have hand cuffs on Alex.
Let Alex play, stop holding him back. Yes, maybe a negative play may or maynot occur, but if the end result is More posistive plays than negative…and the aggresive mentality resulted in a Win, then let Alex fly, let the man free.
The only thing being conservative gets you in todays wild wild west… is lose’s and us 9ers fans are even more sick & tired of even more than lose’s is freak’en conservatisam, and scared play calling.
Let’s go Coach let these guys PLAY, win or lose, Let Them free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since half of the Bengals players are ex-49ers from the crap years, we should beat them good and make them look silly.
the defense was the better side of the ball

No mention
That Donte Whitner was “reportedly” signing with the Bengals before the Niners had a last minute interruption?
