Q & A With CincyJungle
Hey 49ers fans. Josh Kirkendall from CincyJungle.com (SB Nation's Bengals site) here. Hard to imagine that we're already three weeks deep into the season. Bengals so far are 1-1, beating the Browns thanks to a 40-plus yard touchdown reception by A.J. Green and lost by two points against the Broncos -- though we were playing well in the second half and nearly pulled out the win.
I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you guys have about the Bengals.

RE:
It’s designed to be more run-first, however it hasn’t materialized that way just yet — at least not consistently. When the team passes, it’s a quick passing game that gives Andy Dalton a few reads before finalizing into a decision. Most of the passes are short, especially to our receivers in Simpson and Green in open space, using their talents to break a play open.
If the run game works, then the Bengals will prefer to pound it out.

In theory, we are more run oriented.
Our O Line is better at run blocking than pass blocking and we like to feed Benson the rock 20-25 times a game and hope that he can wear down the defense. However, his YPC have been pretty piss poor, so that doesn’t always work. Last week we played from behind the entire game so we were forced to pass the ball a lot and Dalton held up pretty well under that kind of pressure for a rookie.

Hopefully you guys try to run it

Yeah, your D seems pretty stingy against the run from what I have read.
Only giving up something like 2.6 YPC? But also from what I understand, your secondary is small and not so good. Hopefully a huge target like AJ Green can take advantage of that.

Yeah our secondary isn't amazing
But it’s not that bad. Carlos Rogers is very underrated and is usually in great position, and the cornerbacks in general are not great but not horrific.
I think our safeties are the weak spot, they really like to beat on play-action and are just not that good in pass coverage.

Of course they will try.
Everybody tries. But it won’t work so they will air it out to Green and he’ll a have Miles Austin like day.
flip a coin
we should be a run oriented offense that stays with a 30+ rush attempts per game. last week, we got a little behind, coaches pulled the plug on running and went pass heavy.
we’re still learning what to expect from gruden, would appear he’s willing to be fluid and adjust to the situation. with a rookie qb, a rookie g, and some starters in a new offensive system, if gruden decides to start pushing for 30+ passes a game, some team will make cincy pay with turnovers.
" I for one, welcome our new Buffalo overlords. " - Whokebe
Should be more run-oriented.
Gruden is not Bratkowski. Ergo, intelligent gameplans will actually be made.

Clint Boling seems to be a weak spot.
He has been asked to step in as a rookie and start at guard in place of veteran Bobbie Williams due to Williams’ suspension and that’s a tall order for a rookie. He’s not absolutely miserable, but he’s a rookie making rookie mistakes.
by Adam Morgan on Sep 21, 2011 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions
RE: Both guards
Though he had a good week one, left guard Nate Livings allowed three quarterback pressures against the Broncos and as Adam points out, Boling has had his rookie struggles; though Boling’s problems have been against rush blocks.
Our tackles are by far our strongest part of the group and Andre Smith (right tackle) had arguably his best game as a pro last week.

The game will be won and lost...
in the Niners’ secondary (I think).
Gresham, Simpson, Green. One of those guys is on chart for a career day, ala Miles Austin, unless the Niners can pull it together. Carlos Rogers is solid. Donte Whitner is good too. But everyone else in the Niners secondary needs serious work. The Bengals’ playmakers are in better shape than the Cowboys’ last Sunday. I’d take Gresham, Simpson and Green over Austin, Witten and Ogletree anyday. It’s could be painful to watch the Niners secondary get manhandled.
If the game turns into a shoot-out, I think the Bengals run away with it. The Niners aren’t using their playmakers in the passing game (at all) and gave a wounded — nay — crippled Dallas secondary a free pass last Sunday. If the Bengals’ weakness is at safety, then you can bet your house that the Niners won’t throw anything his way.
It also remains to see whether Alex and the remnants of the Niners’ receiving corps can keep pace with an explosive passing game. Alex has had a serviceable season thus far. But very pedestrian production in both games. He’s capable of opening it up. But right now the Niners seem content with keeping everything low and slow.
G's
bobbie williams is our best G and he’s suspended (which most of us feel was a garbage suspension. williams is too much a class act to do performance enhancers).
livings, last year, fans disliked him. this year we’re slowly coming around to him, still seems iffy at times.
boling, a rookie, shows promise, but can be schooled by a vet.
" I for one, welcome our new Buffalo overlords. " - Whokebe
Clements seems pretty much as advertised.
Physical corner who lacks speed because of his age. He’s not Johnathan Joseph, for sure, but he’s serviceable. Better than anyone else on the roster besides Hall at that spot.

Brown turned down a 1st for him from Washington, and another pick that could have became a 1st. He was quiet for chad this year and was traded, more because the drafting of green and emergence of Simpson and caldwell at the end of last season. A maybe a little bit so mike brown could try to appease Carson, that’s speculation of course.

As for the rest of the secondary, Leon Hall is arguably one of the best cover corners in the league and he’ll generally cover a team’s #1 WR. Chris Crocker and Reggie Nelson are our safeties. Nelson gave up a big play in the Cleveland game but overall he’s having a breakout season. The guy is everywhere on the field, has pressured the QB several times, had a key sack, and some great pass breakups. He is someone to keep an eye on.

i’ve become a closet fan of the texans this season with the jo-jo signing. so’ i’m really biased when it comes to nate.
hoping nate looks more like he did in week 1 (soso) than nate did in week 2 (not worthy of being our #2 if nate continues to play that way once adam jones heals up)

Rrrgh Clements.
Still mad Brown let Joseph walk, even if he was overpaying a bit.

RE:
It’s spread out. As a core group, Bengals fans just aren’t expecting much this year because so much has changed. Our offense is completely changed, new set of receivers, new QB and a new offensive coordinator. Our defense, while our strongest aspect, isn’t playing as well as we thought it would (but what NFL fan isn’t experiencing that most of the time?).
So there’s still a general attitude of where this team is at right now; not so much a weekly thing, just a season-long calculation of what we see and where we’re heading.
And really, unless your Ravens or Steelers fans suffering an embarrassing loss (just because it’s awesome), there’s no room for us to mock others.

I think we, as fans, are simply encouraged by the play of the team.
I think we’re all just happy to be 1-1 and didn’t really expect the team to play as well as they have up to this point. It gives us a sense of hope for the future. I think this team will be in a lot more games than people expected them to be in. We’re very encouraged by the play of Andy Dalton, who has played very well to this point and has yet to turn the ball over. We’re the third youngest team in the whole league so I think there’s a sense that we’re just happy to sit back and watch these guys develop.
Now that the big egos are not here anymore, it seems like there’s a feeling that Marvin Lewis and the vets here have the young players buying into his way of doing things and they can get back to playing football without distractions.

bengals fans are still trying to decide what we have at d-line. on paper, on the field, it appears to be the strongest 7 bodies on the d-line mike brown has ever put together. in denver they were a little sluggish. its now a question of 1 game in a city we never play well in or something else?
" I for one, welcome our new Buffalo overlords. " - Whokebe
Since when are we really able to mock others?
We generally get fired up when people try to kick us while we’re down though. Some of us have witnessed a little of the smack talk Niners fans have been saying and are actually getting fired up for this game through it. I’ll say it here for the people who have partook in this: we are not going to be easy. If you win, it will be close, and you have no reason to expect a blow-out or to ink in a victory.
None of us are expecting victory either (well, wait, some are but a majority are not), but do not, for a second, think we will be an easy win. I’d wager as much to say we probably have more talent than you—it’s just young/inexperienced or injured.

Who are the guys to watch out for? Is Marvin Lewis’ scheme aggressive and does it send many blitzes or is it more of a coverage sack scheme?
49ers writer for National Football Authority

Carlos Dunlap, Michael Johnson, and Geno Atkins.
Those are the guys to watch out for on the D Line. We expect big things from them as a unit over the next few years. Zimmer likes to blitz but he’s not opposed to coverage sacks. Coverage sacks were easier to come by last year when we had JJo and Hall but now with just Hall they are a little harder to come by.

I just remember how the Texans manhandled the 49ers’ O-Line in the pre-season. The Niners’ O-Line is just this huge question mark where a solid group of linemen should be.
Dallas pulled in 6 sacks with hardly any blitzing really.
Cincinnati is probably looking at about the same. Sundays are going to be really hard to watch until the Niners figure out how to protect the QB and/or remember how to do all those wonderful quick-passes and YAC that made the WCO such a force back in the Montana-Young days.

I agree.
The Palmer situation is just bizarre. On the plus side, it looks like you guys got one of the better rookie QBs in this draft. Dalton has been pretty awesome thus far. He was one of the guys I wanted the Niners to get. The guy is wicked accurate and seems to know how to win.
I’m not too high on Kaepernick. He’s got “upside”. But that and a BLT will give you a BLT. I’ve got a lot of hope for Tolzien. Barring that, maybe the Niners can land their QBotF in next year’s draft.
You guys could’ve gotten a 1st or 2nd rounder easily for Palmer. Look what the Cardinals gave up for Kolb. And I think that sort of trade could’ve really helped the team.
But A.J. Green and Andy Dalton are quite a haul for one draft…
Upside and a BLT gets you a BLT.
Upside, a BLT, and Jim Harbaugh gets you a really good quarterback. (You don’t still get the BLT, which Harbaugh eats.)

Not a great record by NFL standards, but he has been coaching under mike brown, so he gets his own curve. It seems like he’s earned more personell say over the years, so he has had a big part in the last few solid drafts.

some of us hope lewis outlasts brown. its pretty much up to lewis at this point when he goes.
as for the palmer thing, its a dead horse in cincy. we’re bored with palmer. he’s viewed as a quitter, a poor leader, and the team is better off without him. brown’s pride reaches moronic levels and often forces him to make bad decisions. the palmer thing won’t be flushed out of cincy for a year or two, when the bengals get far less in return than the cards gave up for kolb (2nd rounder + pro-bowl cb). the national media makes the palmer situation a story. in cincy, its old news.

Considering he didn’t get ran out of town this last season, I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes something of Cincinnati’s Belichick, and if he could win with the power he’s been given, I don’t think any of us will complain.

the lb core is the d’s biggest liability in pass coverage. lawson and maualuga in pass coverage are iffy. howard has been interesting in pass coverage. the bengals might try to work howard into passing downs when rivers comes back. howard could split time with lawson later in the season. hitting TEs for 5-15 against cincy’s d is the way to go.

Bengals and 49ers look like talent twins

I'd say the Bengals have an edge
Though I question whether it’s significant. The thing that makes it equal is that most of it is completely raw, so it’s still struggling and making mistakes. A year or two down the road, and I think this question will be easy enough to answer.

toss out the edge with the circus coming to town this week
no way can lewis hold normal practices and keep the team focused this week now.

why does Ken Anderson get no love?
I thought he was a great quarterback for that era.
by mcwagner on Sep 21, 2011 10:55 PM PDT via mobile reply actions
the hof tends to favor players from large markets
anderson was in top for most qb stats at time of retirement, still in top 10 for some qb stats, and has never gotten close to enough votes to be enshrined.
much like ken reily, a cb for the bengals his whole career, retired among the all time int leaders in nfl history. still sits at #5 25 years after he retired, still not in the hof. reily remains the only top retired int leader not in the hof. much like anderson’s snub.

He's a Bengal.
It’s quite literally that simple. No SB wins, played for a small market team, had some consistency issues in his career. I still argue that he should be included if Namath was, but for a Bengal to make it in, they quite literally have to be the best at their position to do it.
Do you guys remember how to do the Ickey Shuffle?
Cause that would be a cool thing to see if you happen to score ;-)

Do you think that Simpson and Collins should be suspended by the team for the upcoming game?

i think simpson should be cut
collins was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
simpson should be cut regardless of arrest or not, his house, he should have known better. risk a mufti-million dollar nfl career for pocket change? he’s a moron and needs to be gone from cincy. of course mike brown would resign simpson for a cheaper contract next season regardless of what the fans or coaches want. a deal is a deal after all. ::rolleyes::

Collins, no.
Simpson probably won’t take long to have the book thrown at him. Even if he somehow comes out of this without jail time, Goodell’s not gonna be too happy with him. There’s no way he’s coming out of this unscathed.
How satisfied are you with Jermaine Gresham?
Bfeore last year’s draft, Bengals fans seemed very determined that he was the guy they needed. How has he progressed so far?
Do you run 3 or 4 WR sets often? When you do, how do you usually position your receivers?
How do you rate your linebackers and safeties in pass coverage? Do 2-TE sets give you trouble?
