49ers Roster News: Ian Williams Reportedly Informed He Made The Roster

Since the last thread is filling up and we're still waiting for the final official roster cuts, I thought it was time for a new thread. The most recent news indicates the 49ers have reportedly informed nose tackle Ian Williams that he will make the 53-man roster. Most of us were projecting it, but there were still some question marks as to his chances.

The big issue is using a roster spot on what some would construe as a developmental guy. Williams was high on the list of undrafted free agents, but even still, the 49ers nose tackle options at this point would seem to start with Isaac Sopoaga and then potentially move to Ricky Jean Francois before Williams would even see the field. RJF moves around between nose tackle and defensive end, so Williams does provide one more option at nose tackle. My guess is they figured Williams would probably not clear waivers so they're willing to use one of their seven inactive spots on game day for the Notre Dame nose tackle.

We'll have more news as the cuts come in. The most prominent reported cuts thus far are Josh McCown and Dominique Zeigler. The team also has reportedly cut S Chris Maragos, WR Chris Hogan and WR Joe Hastings.

Let's be honest with ourselves guys, the Niners aren't competing for the Super Bowl this year.

So they should roster high ceiling, developmental players like Ian Williams, Demarcus Dobbs, Daniel Kilgore, etc. Let these young guys learn the NFL game and come in next year ready to contribute as veterans.

And the NFL has a noticeable lack of NT talent as more teams move to the 3-4 every year. So it’d be stupid to release a NT prospect and not expect him to get snatched up immediately before you can stick him on the PS.

This explains why the SF Giants’ pitchers always blame themselves when they lose an 0-1 or 1-2 battle, even though anyone sane can see that the Giants’ offense was the real culprit.

the pistol offense

is so far from being an NFL offense that I think Kap did very well indeed. It is tough to pre-read, drop-back, read coverage again and then make a good throw. Kap is very raw at that but didn’t do too badly/

No.

And when things slow down for him, and he knows the playbook, he is very instinctual. Just processing everything he has had to up to this point was a huge challenge to win the job. He will be much, much better by next preseason.

My take on the release of McCown ...

They had to go one of two ways:

1. IF Kaepernick is good enough to be #2, McCown makes a good-enough low-cost #3.
2. IF Kaepernick is best suited to watch and learn as the #3, we need to acquire a better guy to be #2 if Alex goes down.

Kaep demonstrated in the preseason that he is NOT ready to be the #2 … thus cut McCown (nobody else will likely sign him) and seek an upgrade on the waiver wire.

Interesting

Jeremy Beal was one of the cuts today. Just before the draft there was talk of him being a 3rd-5th rounder, then he got taken in the 7th by Denver — and couldn’t beat Derrick Harvey of Jaguar Bust Fame out for a roster spot. He would have been better served to have skipped the Senior Bowl — those tackles really showed him up. If he was a higher pick he might have been given more time.

And Haralson overshot on his run blitz… But specifically, Willis can shed Grant’s block, and make the tackle on the play… This is the #1 area for improvement needed by the bench defense… Especially the LBs…

I actually think that was mostly on Spillman.

It’s probably why he’s going to be cut… not the main reason, but partially. Maiocco’s slam on Tre9er was a little uncalled for because there’s more context to it than “He’s Harbaugh’s guy”… not totally true. The scout in that area brought Jones to the table.

Ian is a one of the more underrated pick ups this offseason. Also the more and more I hear about cuts the more likely it seems long will make the roster. I’m not celebrating people being out of jobs I’m just hoping long is rewarded for playing his way onto the roster.

stupid thing to do...

highly unlikely that it would result in injuries because the bullet wont often maintain a ballistic trajectory, and lacks the terminal velocity to hurt anyone in free-fall. But, it happens from time to time, and is a just plain stupid thing to do.

not that I’m advocating shooting into the air pointlessly… it is still a dumb thing to do. But, the egg head side of me feels I need to interject the actually physics of it into the conversation. Shot straight up, a bullet comes to a stop and begins to free-fall at speeds not exceeding its terminal velocity… it would sting a bit… but not at all deadly. However… fired at a lesser angle it can maintain ballistic trajectory and certainly harm or kill someone. STILL A STUPID THING TO DO!!!

Maybe

his ST speed dazzled them and they think he can be coached not to miss tackles?

Maybe Akers will kick it high and not in the endzone

and they expect Spillman to get them before the 20.

That has to be the explanation. The coaches must see his speed and ability on ST and feel they can change whatever he’s struggled w/ so far.

So have I... not sure to what extent you had your sprain or tear or whatever but it mentally was there for me.

I know a bone break is different but it still will be in the back of his mind. It’s more of a mental thing than a physical thing… I mean, it could wind up being physical too but its a risk none the less. And with guys like Perrish Cox and Brandon Ghee out there, I would not mind if they moved Adams for one of those two.

I would say Smith doesnt run often enough...

there are time where i wish he would take off and he just stands there a bit to long, or forces a throw…

by Sigelvictory on Sep 3, 2011 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

I have that thought all the time...

The guy gets antsy and throws an awkward ball instead of just taking off for the same 5 yard gain… Threw 2 picks last season where he should have just tucked it down and bolted…

by Takeo33 on Sep 3, 2011 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I know right...

he is actually pretty mobile, but it is an underutilized part of his game… get 5 and slide! He did that the other night too… I was happy to see it.

by Sigelvictory on Sep 3, 2011 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Me too...

He used to do it more often before he got that first injury… Was very solid scrambling with Norv Turner’s offense…

He could just be scared to get hit at this point, but that’s why QB’s can slide…

probably some stupid SingleRaye thing...

All Sing knew about QB’s is a good one should be a “pocket passer”. Of course being an offensive caveman he took that to mean they should NEVER scramble.

by Sigelvictory on Sep 3, 2011 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

truthfully though...

The guy had offensive freedom to improvise, and I think that held over to scrambling with the ball as well… And he wasn’t really healthy enough to play the few years before that…

Ya, Carolina and Cincy are my bottom 2...

by Takeo33 on Sep 3, 2011 3:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Thomas Davis...

And he’s ok… They already have a young defense though… So I don’t think they’ll go top 5 defense unless there’s a ridiculous CB available… Gamble and Munnerlyn are mediocre at best… and they’re the starters… Captain’s young though…

by Takeo33 on Sep 3, 2011 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

If Cincy and Carolina go 1,2...

Than it’s likely that Luck will drop to 3, or there will be a trade… These guys will want high choice lineman next year…
