49ers Roster News: Ian Williams Reportedly Informed He Made The Roster
Since the last thread is filling up and we're still waiting for the final official roster cuts, I thought it was time for a new thread. The most recent news indicates the 49ers have reportedly informed nose tackle Ian Williams that he will make the 53-man roster. Most of us were projecting it, but there were still some question marks as to his chances.
The big issue is using a roster spot on what some would construe as a developmental guy. Williams was high on the list of undrafted free agents, but even still, the 49ers nose tackle options at this point would seem to start with Isaac Sopoaga and then potentially move to Ricky Jean Francois before Williams would even see the field. RJF moves around between nose tackle and defensive end, so Williams does provide one more option at nose tackle. My guess is they figured Williams would probably not clear waivers so they're willing to use one of their seven inactive spots on game day for the Notre Dame nose tackle.
We'll have more news as the cuts come in. The most prominent reported cuts thus far are Josh McCown and Dominique Zeigler. The team also has reportedly cut S Chris Maragos, WR Chris Hogan and WR Joe Hastings.

If you get him you'd better start him
He’s an unrestricted FA now, and will likely be looking for a big payday.
people who get cut on cut down are not looking for huge paydays, they are looking to be on a team.

Let's be honest with ourselves guys, the Niners aren't competing for the Super Bowl this year.
So they should roster high ceiling, developmental players like Ian Williams, Demarcus Dobbs, Daniel Kilgore, etc. Let these young guys learn the NFL game and come in next year ready to contribute as veterans.
And the NFL has a noticeable lack of NT talent as more teams move to the 3-4 every year. So it’d be stupid to release a NT prospect and not expect him to get snatched up immediately before you can stick him on the PS.

This explains why the SF Giants’ pitchers always blame themselves when they lose an 0-1 or 1-2 battle, even though anyone sane can see that the Giants’ offense was the real culprit.

I liked a lot of things Kaep did on the offseason. Not everything was pretty but I don’t think it was all that bad. I don’t think he will be any worse than Cam Newton if Smith were to go down ::knocks on wood::
But I think this says more to the fact of just how much Harbaugh believes in Alex Smith than anything else.

the pistol offense
is so far from being an NFL offense that I think Kap did very well indeed. It is tough to pre-read, drop-back, read coverage again and then make a good throw. Kap is very raw at that but didn’t do too badly/
given a chance...
with gore, davis, crabtree, and edwards in the game he would look better. It’s easier to throw when your guys are more open after all.
No.
And when things slow down for him, and he knows the playbook, he is very instinctual. Just processing everything he has had to up to this point was a huge challenge to win the job. He will be much, much better by next preseason.

My take on the release of McCown ...
They had to go one of two ways:
1. IF Kaepernick is good enough to be #2, McCown makes a good-enough low-cost #3.
2. IF Kaepernick is best suited to watch and learn as the #3, we need to acquire a better guy to be #2 if Alex goes down.
Kaep demonstrated in the preseason that he is NOT ready to be the #2 … thus cut McCown (nobody else will likely sign him) and seek an upgrade on the waiver wire.

Interesting
Jeremy Beal was one of the cuts today. Just before the draft there was talk of him being a 3rd-5th rounder, then he got taken in the 7th by Denver — and couldn’t beat Derrick Harvey of Jaguar Bust Fame out for a roster spot. He would have been better served to have skipped the Senior Bowl — those tackles really showed him up. If he was a higher pick he might have been given more time.
Ya he got destroyed during the senior bowl

Grant better than Kristick, but Grant has more field time...
They both got locked up tight on that big run by Matthews on thursday… Patrick Willis makes that tackle… They are solid, but can improve… They are good prospects though… I like them both…
Ya he did...
And Haralson overshot on his run blitz… But specifically, Willis can shed Grant’s block, and make the tackle on the play… This is the #1 area for improvement needed by the bench defense… Especially the LBs…
and nobody in the back end
seemed interested in getting their jersey dirty to try and dive for the tackle as he split the defense… oh well.
I actually think that was mostly on Spillman.
It’s probably why he’s going to be cut… not the main reason, but partially. Maiocco’s slam on Tre9er was a little uncalled for because there’s more context to it than “He’s Harbaugh’s guy”… not totally true. The scout in that area brought Jones to the table.

Eh, but Spillman is not a guy I'd ever want on my starting depth chart...

Really hope that move doesn’t end up biting the 49ers in the rear. Obviously he had deficiencies in his game, but I’m not sure it was best to give up on him so soon.
"The principle is competing against yourself. It's about self improvement, about being better than you were the day before." ~Steve Young #8
no reason for them to cut Mays...yet
because they need time to figure out what he can do, and also see all the things he can’t do
They were hardly likely to cut him – they gave up a seven-rounder for him. You don’t spend a draft pick on a safety on then cut them. Oh wait …
exactly, you trade him for a lower round pick
and the bengals couldn’t do that since they spent a 7th on him

they passed a law to make it a felony to shoot into the air like that…
"You have to reinvent yourself each year, ... What helped us was that there was some turnover each year." Bill Walsh...
stupid thing to do...
highly unlikely that it would result in injuries because the bullet wont often maintain a ballistic trajectory, and lacks the terminal velocity to hurt anyone in free-fall. But, it happens from time to time, and is a just plain stupid thing to do.
what goes up must come down, bullets coming down will still kill

exactly...
not that I’m advocating shooting into the air pointlessly… it is still a dumb thing to do. But, the egg head side of me feels I need to interject the actually physics of it into the conversation. Shot straight up, a bullet comes to a stop and begins to free-fall at speeds not exceeding its terminal velocity… it would sting a bit… but not at all deadly. However… fired at a lesser angle it can maintain ballistic trajectory and certainly harm or kill someone. STILL A STUPID THING TO DO!!!
Try telling that it would not kill only sting to this girls parents

I hear you...
Grade 2 ankle sprain 5 years ago… I still feel it on long walks or on cold days… But I do have full “cutting” power… He may be able to get back to normal, but the pain isn’t likely going anywhere…
The thing about a break though is you may always mentally be thinking about the bone sliding again on a hard enough cut.
It’s different than ligament damage.
Check out my site!!
The Hometown Fan
Its not an issue of blocking it out mentally with the ligaments...
its an issue of coping with the pain… I promise you they still hurt him when he is warming up.
another good point...
A break like that, though, doesn’t go quietly… Or alone… He definitely had some ligament damage too…
It's likt the kind of break you'd see from a guy who just fell 30 feet...
It completely bent under his weight about 2 inches above his foot…
So have I... not sure to what extent you had your sprain or tear or whatever but it mentally was there for me.
I know a bone break is different but it still will be in the back of his mind. It’s more of a mental thing than a physical thing… I mean, it could wind up being physical too but its a risk none the less. And with guys like Perrish Cox and Brandon Ghee out there, I would not mind if they moved Adams for one of those two.
Check out my site!!

He didn't make the team, so I guess it's moot...
But I wish the guy well… He’s talented enough to play in this league if he can recover both physically and mentally from this…

I thought that may happen.
Time to bring in Perrish Cox or Brandon Ghee…do it!

Seriously though
I’d rather have Adams than Colin Jones on the team. Plus Adams is a great punt returner. Arguably one of our best.
Jones making doesn't make any sense.

Has anyone heard if Thomas Clayton has been cut by the Pats...
I really liked that kid… to bad he got hurt (was that last preseason?)
He was cut by the Pats a while ago.
Now with the Seahawks, although I don’t know if they’ve cut him or not. Scored a TD last night vs the Raiders.

Actually I heard about the seachickens... I just forgot...
any matter, I wonder if he will catch on there or anywhere for that matter. Wishing him well…
He'll be cut.
They only will carry 3…prob Lynch, Forsett, and Washington

Running back…. Andrew Luck = captain dink and dunk… his long ball is not accurate at all. Even his 20-30 yarders are pretty bad.

Didn't I say that last year too

lol... yeah he sucks...
I’m sooooo glad we will be to good this year to have a shot at him in the draft.
He doesn't suck.
He can be a decent NFL quarterback but not like this demigod everyone makes him out to be.

Are you watching the game?

No I wanna watch it too
but the game tracker doesn’t necessarily tell you how far the ball is thrown just how many yards are picked up.

of course,
however, i could care less about the dinking and dunking… thats the WCO, and should have been expected of Luck for the most part. I can’t really speak to his long ball… I don’t watch college very often… all I know is he looked pretty good in that bowl game last year.
what do you think is Luck's best game?

Mobility
Passes on the run and quick decision making.
Flaws include, not very accurate, and runs more than he should, bails from the pocket too soon sometimes… plus a couple other things.

Prob his best, most complete game last year was against Oregon State

weren't we defending Alex for dinking and dunking just yesterday?

That's the offensive style.
It’s not completely bad. But even Alex Smith’s deep ball is better than Luck’s.

They're very comparable...
That’s exactly why Harbaugh wanted Smith.

I would say Smith doesnt run often enough...
there are time where i wish he would take off and he just stands there a bit to long, or forces a throw…
I have that thought all the time...
The guy gets antsy and throws an awkward ball instead of just taking off for the same 5 yard gain… Threw 2 picks last season where he should have just tucked it down and bolted…
I know right...
he is actually pretty mobile, but it is an underutilized part of his game… get 5 and slide! He did that the other night too… I was happy to see it.
He did in 2005 and 2006
But he’s maybe not felt like he could in recent years? Dunno… he took off against the Chargers the other night and I was like, “Whoa, he still has wheels”

probably some stupid SingleRaye thing...
All Sing knew about QB’s is a good one should be a “pocket passer”. Of course being an offensive caveman he took that to mean they should NEVER scramble.
truthfully though...
The guy had offensive freedom to improvise, and I think that held over to scrambling with the ball as well… And he wasn’t really healthy enough to play the few years before that…
cant really argue with you...
I havent watched much of him… but I do like some of what I’ve seen… time will tell i suppose. Problem is that he will go high to some terrible team. poor kid
Cincy, Miami, or Buffalo probably… but since the Bills rarely pick 1st round quarterbacks, I’d stick with Cincy or Miami… Washington, Denver, or Seattle might be also.

I still think Carolina might be picking first again...
With the rookie cap it not inconceivable that they would take him, if Newton sucks really badly this year… which i sorta expect him too.
Ya, Carolina and Cincy are my bottom 2...
They’ll combine for 5 wins… You pick who wins 3, but at least in Cincy there’s some semblance of an offensive scheme…
Nah, they won't give up on him that fast...even if he sucks really bad.
They’ll draft for another position

as well they should...
but you are giving them too much credit for not being stupid when it comes to personnel.
Maybe.
I think they can afford an upgrade to the secondary or linebackers. And their coach is all about the defense.

CB's are awful, and they're bad at LB other than Beason...
But Carolina will go tackle in the top 5… You can book it…
Thomas Davis...
And he’s ok… They already have a young defense though… So I don’t think they’ll go top 5 defense unless there’s a ridiculous CB available… Gamble and Munnerlyn are mediocre at best… and they’re the starters… Captain’s young though…
If Cincy and Carolina go 1,2...
Than it’s likely that Luck will drop to 3, or there will be a trade… These guys will want high choice lineman next year…
I think Buffalo will be a bit better this year...
I’m starting to warm up to Fitz… if that o-line doesn’t get him killed.
Fitz is good but not good enough to compete.
They do play in the AFCE… that division is no cake walk and their schedule is rough. They have holes on the defense too. That will prob be the difference.

I agree...
but I think they can be good enough to stay out of the “Luck Sweepstakes” assuming is a top 3 pick… maybe.
They'll pick top 10, but not top 3...
I think Bills can beat some teams unexpectedly… They do every year…
