NFL Roster Cuts: San Francisco 49ers Maybe Considering Free Agent/Waiver Options?

The San Francisco 49ers are working through their roster cuts and will have official names sometime in the next half hour or so. In the meantime, much of the news coming out is via league sources, agents, players and so forth. Phillip Adams tweeted out "Blessed" but then Matt Maiocco indicated he has in fact been cut. I guess Adams is simply looking at the bigger picture. If he has in fact been cut, hopefully he is able to land elsewhere and make a career for himself in the league.

We're also getting a lot of information about practice squad candidates. Thus far, we've seen tweets indicating Chase Beeler, Joe Hastings, Cory Nelms and Konrad Reuland have all been cut but the team wants to sign them to the practice squad if they clear waivers.

Reuland is an interesting one given his battle for the 49ers third tight end spot. Nate Lawrie is the only other healthy option (minus Brian Jennings, of course). Does that mean it's Lawrie's job, or maybe the team is considering a free agent/waiver option at tight end. Even if Lawrie does not get cut today, most teams will make additional roster moves in the coming days once they see the players available on the waiver wire. It will be interesting to see what kind of transactions take place tomorrow and into the coming week.

Cuts after the jump.

Star-divide

The cuts so far include:

QB Josh McCown
WR Dominique Zeigler
Chris Maragos
WR Chris Hogan
WR Joe Hastings
CB Phillip Adams
TE Konrad Reuland
CB Cory Nelms
S Curtis Taylor

I just got my copy of Madden 12 and noticed the 49ers still had a bunch of players from last years squad… Will this be rectified soon or is it just cause I am in europe and they dont care about us over here?

Where you can go out and cut guys who’ve been w/ you all through training camp and made the 53-man roster in order to sign waived players from other teams right before the season? Seems like familiarity w/ your system would give some advantage, but I guess tape and talent trumps all.

Not against Tolzien...

I think only Aldon and Dobbs (maybe Ian) are the players that made the team and played against Tolzien

Either way, it’d be an interesting pickup but might be slightly detrimental to Kaep’s development

"He’s going for the ‘T’ key, he should probably turn to it, but he stops and checks out the ‘R’ key first, then doubles back for a look at the ‘Y’ key, then by the time he decides to go back to ‘T’ to get some words typed, he’s brought down for a two-yard loss, ending up with the ‘G’ key."

Colin Jones is way too fast

to give up on. If they can re-direct him to actually “touch” or “tackle” the other teams ball carrier than the coaches will have turned water into wine.

They were experimenting with him as a WR at one point.

I really have no idea what the deal is with him, or that.

Why such hate against Norris ??

Bandwagoners are the prostitutes of fandom.

by SSC24 on Sep 3, 2011 3:32 PM PDT reply actions

because he can't:

catch worth a crap
run worth a crap
block worth a crap

yeah there may or not be some embellishment going on here

although he’s pretty much all-around mediocre, and has no upside.

All we need him for is blocking though

by SSC24 on Sep 3, 2011 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions

that's just the point

Walker, Byham (when healthy), or even Miller can block 90+% as well, but have upside, and are much better in every other category.

FB in a WCO usually does a lot more than just block

by Andrew9erfan on Sep 3, 2011 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Rathman could block

And run and catch. Norris used to be a good/ not great blocker, cannot run, and cannot catch.

and he older with no further room for improvement or development. He is on his way down, not up.

Why not take a chance on a younger guy who might provide better skills, both now and in the future

by uspsuperman on Sep 3, 2011 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

you've clearly

never watched him bump into opposing players and then fall down. That’s if he actually touches them. He’s like old furniture, can’t get rid of them.

by jviet on Sep 3, 2011 3:35 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm still baffled why they don't move Dixon to FB

And let Gore run behind him. He could easily fill the Rathman/Floyd role in the offense.

Dixon blocks like he runs

He doesn’t explode into blocks, he’s not decisive, and he’s slow. He’s really not a good blocker and tha’s the main job of the FB. Other than that I have no idea.
