San Francisco 49ers Roster Cuts: Ronald Johnson, Tony Wragge Among Notable Cuts

The San Francisco 49ers had until 3:00pm pacific today to cut their roster down to 53 players and they have reached that number upon approval by the league. Head after the jump to view all the cuts. The most notable cuts are probably offensive lineman Tony Wragge and wide receiver Ronald Johnson. Wragge is not surprising given that the team likes what Adam Snyder can do as a utility guy. Throw in the fact that they seem pleased with the development of Daniel Kilgore and it's not surprising.

Ronald Johnson was a sixth round pick of the 49ers but he struggled quite a bit during preseason action. It will be interesting to see if the team decides he is worth continuing to develop as a wide receiver.

One of the more interesting decisions came at the third tight end position. The team placed Nate Byham on injured reserve and then cut both Konrad Reuland and Nate Lawrie. Reports indicate the team wants to sign Reuland to their practice squad if he clears waivers. However, for now this leaves the team with only two tight ends. I think it's safe to say the team will be looking to add a tight end in free agency. If that's the case, we can expect another cut among the bubble players at some point in the next day or two.

You can view the entire 53-man roster at 49ers.com. Coach Harbaugh has a conference call planned for 5:15pm so I'll try and hop on that. Final cuts after the jump

And I don’t think he will be. I don’t know why everyone here like him so much.

Interesting to note

That in addition to our 3 Specialists (Akers, Lee, Jennings) , Harbaugh kept three players (Jones, Spillman and Costanzo) whose contributions will almost exclusively be on ST barring injury (or in the case of JOnes, being released is a backup QB becomes available).

The ST units better be top 5 in the league.

not pissed, but a little bummed...

Aldon and Brooks playing well, along with Dobbs surprising has made me forget about Lawson already.

by Sigelvictory on Sep 3, 2011 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I know...

that was my main point for keeping Lawson as well… I think the counter-point would be this: Create more pressure, and force teams to keep the TE in to block more often. But, no doubt, Lawson was great in coverage… you won’t get an argument from me on that.

by Sigelvictory on Sep 3, 2011 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions

with a better DE next to him, besides the human tree stump, He would have been more productive.

Not to mention he forced a lot of fumbles and bad throws. I mean at least cut Haralson he has looked like dog food out there.

by rlott#42 on Sep 3, 2011 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Lawson was underrated as well...

He wasn’t as bad pass rusher as everyone makes out. He really just didn’t get many rush attempts. His success rate is actually really good. I think it came down to money, and perhaps behind the scenes attitude? Just a complete guess though…

I'm just relieved

they didn’t cut Dobbs. If they had and kept Norris, I would have been quite pissed. Otherwise, I think we’re pretty much set. Every1, go order your Dobbs jersey…I smell something special brewin’

Huh? Phillip Adams goes, and we keep Brock? WTH?

At least there is next year...

by rlott#42 on Sep 3, 2011 4:16 PM PDT reply actions

Brock is sick, what are you talking about?

He was hanging with Andre Johnson against the Texans. I like the kid. Better than Brown, much better

He should start over Spencer IMO

But Ghee is out there right now

Let me rephrase that then, cut Adams and keep Brown. Adams showed decent coverage skill and is a year removed from a horrible injury.

Brock is not sick though, lagging behind Dre while he still gets completions is the norm for the entire league. best WR since Rice.

At least there is next year...

I think Brock has awesome potential

Even if it wasn't

At 80% he wasn’t able to show the coaches much, and they can’t make decisions based on maybe-so.

by Ougadas on Sep 4, 2011 12:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Brock is OK, has some good potential

but Phillip is better IMO…DAMN! this pisses me off!!!

maybe his mental or ankle (maybe both) wasn’t quite right and he didn’t do well in practice. That would make sense since he got almost no burn during the games.

Give tha guy a break...I remember losing most of our games because of mistakes by players that did not play the quarterback position.

I'm sure Norv Turner is a good judge of a good QB...even he said the guy can be good w/ quality people around him.

i hope he starts over brown since spencer is coming up lame with injuries.

I kno...

I’ve been away for a week and I just saw they cut him….my soul hurts. I thought it was a typo, maybe they meant Phillip Davis, then I saw they cut him too.

Phillip was my ace in the hole in the secondary. I dont know, he must’ve had problems in practice. From what I saw of him in the games, he played ok…he was closer on coverage then anybody else.

Lmaoooooo

ND needs to cooperate with the weather can call it a “L” for the day!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USC_Trojans_football#A_.22Perfect_Day.22

A “Perfect Day”
A “Perfect Day” (a phrase created by the school’s football announcer Peter Arbogast) to any USC fan is a USC win coupled with losses by Notre Dame and UCLA.29 The last “Perfect Day” occurred on September 11, 2010, when USC beat Virginia, Notre Dame lost to Michigan, and UCLA lost to Stanford. There have been 26 “Perfect Days” in the last 35 years.

Wragge for Snyder, I don't know about that

I thought Wragge did everything you could ask of him in the pre-season. Snyder as more utility, but he’s not that great ant any position.

Igor Olshansky cut from Dallas

He’s a decent 3-4 DE. But I think Dobbs will be a better in the not too distant future.

Maybe Oerrish Cox frrom Denver, dude has issues but can play. Plus we have some good vets to put around him and keep him on the straight and narrow.

Colin Jones

Ya, don’t see it. A bit of a coaching staff vanity pick.

by bignerd on Sep 3, 2011 7:31 PM PDT reply actions

Better work ethic than who?

He might want to mix in some open field tackling work along with his 100 yard dash training. All he proved during preseason was he’s a gunner unable to hit any target.

Guys I'd like to see on the PS from our cuts

Here’s what I like to see on the PS “roster” from our cuts
TE Konrad Reuland
C Chase Beeler
OLB Kenny Rowe
WR Ronalld Johnson
NT Sealver Siliga
RB Xavier Omon
