Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

49ers 53-Man Roster Following Saturday Roster Cuts

The San Francisco 49ers made their necessary roster cuts earlier this afternoon to cut down to the 53-man roster. While the team is at the 53 player limit, that does not mean they are finished making roster moves. Upwards of 800+ players hit the waiver wire following yesterday and today's cuts, meaning scouting departments have limited time to dust off scouting reports and decide if a given player would fit the team's system.

For the 49ers, that means players down around the end of the roster are not necessarily safe from release for now. Few jobs in the NFL are ever completely safe, but that is especially true this weekend every year. The 49ers current 53-man roster would seem to reflect that as the team currently has two quarterbacks and two tight ends. The 49ers could very well stick with those numbers, but I'd be pretty surprised if that was the case.

I've posted the current 53-man roster after the jump. In comparing it to my final projection on Friday, I actually did halfway decent. I had Josh McCown, Konrad Reuland, and Phillip Adams on and I had Will Tukuafu, Keaton Kristick and Colin Jones off. That's a six player swing. Not perfect, but I'd say it's a decent percentage.

The question now is who gets cut and who gets added between now and September 11. Some folks are calling for Scott Tolzien, the Chargers backup who had a strong preseason finale before being waived. While he could be an interesting practice squad option, I would think that if he clears waivers he ends up on the Chargers practice squad. More often than not, it seems the initial practice squad is generally composed of current players. We'll see tomorrow. I'll make sure and get some info posted about waivers tonight or first thing tomorrow morning.

What possible options do you see at quarterback and tight end?

My 1st instinct is to say that Person's, Colin Jones' & Kristick's spots are tentative at best

& that the team will look at who else was release and bring in them and replace those 3.

I still dont get how Norris made the team, great guy but he hasnt done anything. I just dont get it

by Lok on Sep 3, 2011 4:54 PM PDT reply actions

I am also not a fan of Norris, BUT...

He actually looked decent in nis action during the Chargers game. Maybe with the right coaching he can be a lot better than we’ve seen recently.

I must say that I do trust the current coaches (until they give me reasons not to…)

Kristick will get released for a QB I think

Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs this season, hopefully! :)

definately some questionable cuts.

Did not see Colin Jones or Kristick or Norris making it. Keeping only Costanzo OR Spillman, not both. Reuland looked very good and Adams was worth keeping.

this

I wish him good luck where ever he goes, because he is a special talent. Just bad luck on his part with this team. I do see him on an NFL team somewhere

O.K. - now time for a bit of nit picking....

(1) Moran Norris – Hopefully the 9ers find a better fullback & let Miller start.
(2) Antwan Applewhite – not completely sold on this guy.
(3) Colin Jones – first guy to get there on special teams, but never makes the initial tackle.
(4) 9ers biggest error… not keeping Phillip Adams. Just wait until he is 100% and he a stud.

by BigMar on Sep 3, 2011 5:12 PM PDT reply actions

(1) we all hate Norris too much to give him an objective fresh start – maybe Harbaugh thinks he can resurrect his career like Alex Smith’s . . . . or use him for a stop gap this season
(2) Antwan Applewhite – did a good job filling in for the Chargers last year, think he’s a good backup, but would never want him starting
(3) Colin Jones – ghost of training camp, nothing negative or positive was said about the guy. But as the first there he doesn’t have to make the tackle, he just needs to funnel the runner to where the rest of his teammates should be.
(4) Phillip Adams – not PS eligible, if he doesn’t get picked up by some other team I bet 49ers help his rehab and he’ll be in the 90 man roster in next year’s training camp

I agree. It keeps it simple & they made the right choices

Alex has become more of a leader and it would have been nice to see that recognized but Frank is by far the most respected member of the offense

Pat, well how could he not be the captain of the defense?

I was considering the possibility...

of seeing Donte Whitner as Captain on D, but Willis has more reputation & respect among the team, given his seniority on the Niners.

Not sure what Alex thinks about not being offensive captain.

BTW

I agree that I would have rather stashed Phillip Adams and ditched Norris. But I think Norris serves us well if we can’t replace him with someone better. Miller isn’t ready yet. And who knows, with Adams maybe they feel like when he’s healthy they can grab him if no one else wants to sign him. After all, it would be a risk for another team to take him in his present physical condition. He’ll probably be on his own until he’s fully healed. Then maybe we can get him back. . ..

by Since79 on Sep 3, 2011 5:52 PM PDT reply actions

From what Coach Harbaugh said during the conference call. I truly believe that they plan to convert Bruce Miller into an H-Back

and that Norris is on the roster so that they have some insurance so that they can develop him slowly since he converting from defense to offense

by Lok on Sep 3, 2011 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions

maybe they're thinking Miller can split

TE and FB responsibilities, while Norris can be there for the pure blocking plays . . . and hopefully make his blocks. Norris did do pretty well in preseason.

by reedkrase on Sep 3, 2011 6:56 PM PDT up reply actions

They are definitely thinking just that

Coach Harbaugh said so in a conference call – and he spoke of Miller being used on Special Teams. And don’t forget, they have hinted boradly that there would be no hesitancy to use him on the D Side. Talking ’bout a lot of hats.

Spencer got beat like Rodney King all year long last year.

He’s coming off a hammy injury, etc…

Brock showed a ton of promise and upside and proved he could hang with the big boys both in practice going up against Braylon and Andre Johnson (as said above).

He’s not a good corner, he makes way too many mistakes.

Strongly, strongly disagree… if you could point to some specific instances that make you feel he is “not a good corner” that may help your case. He was the best corner we had all preseason long.

Probably going to go with Edwards, Morgan and either Williams or Ginn. We have Delanie and Davis, so we’re good for a week without him if it happens like that.

He had some decent moments for a terrible buffalo team. As a third string vet with some upside we could do much worse.

That's IF Garcia wanted to be a backup...

…which he has made clear he doesn’t. When the Raiders handed him the No. 2 slot on a silver platter, he stated that he only wanted to start. So much for that idea.

As I’ve said before, if this was Jeff Garcia of 2002 (or even 2006), and he was willing to be the No. 2, I’d be all for bringing him back. But you’re talking about a guy who is 41, hasn’t taken an NFL snap since 2009, hasn’t started in the NFL since 2008, and had worse statistics in the UFL last year than both Josh McCown and Daunte Culpepper.

Couple thoughts

Tukuafu, Kristick, and Jones are the last 3 on. Tukuafu should be the first off if we make a waiver claim. No reason to keep 5 DE and he’s the least valuable of the bunch.

Norris gets a big SMH. Check Frank’s new contract for a “carry around dead weight” clause.

Thought we would carry another WR. With Crabs maybe out until his injury fully healed we’re playing with 4 WR.

Should have kept Spillman or Jones, not both.

There's still a lot of season left

Bruce Miller is still on the team and he was getting a bunch of carries in the pre-season at the FB position. I’m sure the coaches would like to see what Miller does against first team defenses.

Crabs (I just typoed it as Craps) is off the PUP. He’ll be ready for week 1. How effective he’ll be with yet another missed pre-season is anybody’s guess.

I believe they will use him as a FB/TE… he can line up as a TE, motion to the back field for extra protection, etc…. there’s a lot of things they can do with him.

was Miller utilized @ TE during preseason? Or did he primarily play FB?

by Doni S on Sep 3, 2011 9:14 PM PDT via iPhone app up reply actions

I ask because this is the 1st time he’s been transitioned to offense…from what I’ve gathered. Playing FB is 1 thing; tacking on TE duties on top of that is another. Or is TE not that much different than FB? Both do block and catch…I’m just wonderin’ is all

by Doni S on Sep 3, 2011 9:19 PM PDT via iPhone app up reply actions

I don't think miller was used as a TE

I think he showed he has hands that can make him a check down receiving threat, he’s a big guy to take down, and as a rookie he can learn a lot as FB/TE while not having the team depending on him. Perfect way to ease him into the role.

by reedkrase on Sep 3, 2011 9:45 PM PDT up reply actions
