49ers Reportedly Claim Scott Tolzien
How does a post become outdated in a matter of minutes? When the 49ers make their move at quarterback. Chargers beat writer Kevin Acee is reporting the 49ers have claimed former Chargers QB Scott Tolzien off waivers. There is no official confirmation from the 49ers at this moment, but it seems like this is gonna happen.
I sort of poo-poo'd the idea of adding Scott Tolzien in part because people were getting excited over his performance in a single game. However, there have been some tweets indicating the 49ers were interested in Tolzien even during the undrafted free agency period. And now it would appear he is on the team. As a waiver claim he has to remain on the 49ers 53-man roster. If they wanted to add him to their practice squad, they in turn would have to waive him and hope nobody claimed him.
The 49ers also reportedly signed McLeod Bethel-Thompson to their practice squad giving the team four quarterbacks, three of them rookies. The 49ers have also reportedly added Chase Beeler, Konrad Reuland, Cory Nelms and Joe Hastings to the practice squad.
What do you think about the decision to claim Scott Tolzien?
Fooch's Update: This also means somebody will need to be released. No word on that yet.

curious what harbaugh saw the other night specifically that he liked
personally, i’d love to dump the dead weight of moran norris if tolzien is going to be on our 53…

Riderless, I think Harbaugh wants the best QBs he can this year.. everything else is future choices..
If Sir Harbaugh of S.F. feels he can make gold out of one of these, or two of these.. or more, then I am all for it. But Tolzien did look good, poised…

What the signing of both Tolzien AND McBLT says to me...
Tolzein is being signed to see if he can be developed, McBLT because someone has to QB the scout team in practice…
After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.
That's not the point
The point is that there is no real back-up if Smith goes down with an injury.
Then again, maybe they’ll just sign McCown/Culpepper if Smith goes down.

Very pleased with this signing...
…Tolzien had a rough start to his preseason, but he adjusted and finished strong. Overall, he was 25/40 for 302 yards, though a lot of that came against us. The Chargers supposedly wanted him for their practice team if he cleared waivers.
He has a quick release
Could be a very good back-up.

I like this move a lot
saw quite a bit of his college career. really smart, good decision maker – pretty good arm. good WCO potential. full disclosure as I’ve said elsewhere I’m not sold on CK – I think he has too many odd aspects to his game to really excel – so I like this pick-up. I think he can challenge CK for the #2 spot – obviously so does Harbaugh if he put him on the 53, right? Still…. what happens if/when A Smith gets knocked out for a half, or a game, or two – means we have two rookies as back-ups. that’s a little odd.
better than
another smith and this guy called david carr
good point
who here thinks this year’s 3 QBs – ASmith, CK and now Tolzein – are an upgrade over ASmith, TSmith and Carr? I do.

ASmith, TSmith and Carr 2011 would still be a big improvement over the 2010 version just because of the coaching.
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
Amazed at the amount of love for this guy...
…based on two preseason games. Not to mention he didn’t exactly set the world on fire in the Rose Bowl (12-21-0 159, no TDs), which is about as big a stage as you can get.
Granted, the crop of released vet QBs wasn’t all that great, but still…
Hope Tolzien looks as good when non-preseason defenses are bearing down on him.

Actually...
I was impressed with him when I watched him play TCU. I wanted our team to get Dalton, but I came away thinking Tolzien would be a great late-round pick-up. His recievers dropped passes and TCU’s DB’s provided good coverage; yet you could still tell he was quite accurate.
Wisc. is all about the run. Consequently he usually only got to pass on obvious 3rd and long situations facing nickel coverage. Despite that, he had one of the highest season completion rates in the country (74.3). The lack of passing attempts (and therefore yardage and TDs) is the only reason he went undrafted.

one thing
Going into the beginning of last season though, Alex Smith was as unquestioned as a starter as he is now. The team didn’t start messing around with the QB situation until things started to sour. As a result, the team was screwed anytime David Carr was on the field and was forced to start Troy Smith as the alternative.
This season, the 49ers have a big backing in Smith, he’s the unquestioned starter. If things begin to go south, Kaep or Tolzier aren’t exactly better than Carr or T.Smith.

They gave him the hook after one poor game. Quarterbacks have poor games. Do you honestly think he gets the hook if he plays one bad game with Harbaugh?
Not one of our QB’s had success because that piss-poor offense, not because they couldn’t get the job done. Take David Carr for instance, he goes back to back up Eli and looks great in preseason. Like a capable back up. Here, he looked like his first year with the Texans again. I think there is a lot more context to consider here other than “he was the uncontested starter”.

I don't disagree
but Smith was the starter up until he got hurt in the Carolina game. That’s seven games, including on 0-5 start. David Carr didn’t even get a chance to look awful, because the coaching staff refused to call pass plays. I’m not saying the situation isn’t better this year. A lot comes back to the OL, and how long can Alex stay healthy behind it?

Harbaugh is one confident dude
And I like that about an offensive minded coach.
If there’s one thing that drove me NUTS about the past two regimes (Nolantary), it was the defensive-minded, play-not-to-lose mentality, even though we didn’t have a Baltimore or Chicago 4-6 defense to support 7 points of offense.
Harbaugh is the kind who will take calculated risks. It won’t work sometimes, but hopefully the overall wins will exceed the losses.

Like what I saw from Tolzien
He was very poised in th epocket and never really panicked. Something our other two Qb’s seam to do. He had decent accuracy and a decent arm. Only real mistake I saw was the interception on the underthrown pass that culliver picked. I think he can develop nicely….. It also looked like the Charger Blogers liked him, and hoped to keep him.
Shaun hill is the perfect WCO QB. I really wonder if Harbaugh would have changed his tune about Alex if Shaun Hill were still on the roster.
Hill’s one weakness was his intermediate to deep ball arm strength (which the Falcons exposed in that 2009 debacle). But that was the stupid Raye-Gun offense. We might be a better team today if Hill were starting in Harbaugh’s WCO.
Oh well. It’s up to Alex to shake off several years of inconsistent play. I believe he can get it done, I’m just worried that he won’t.

why?
I have been pulling for Alex for years, but I have very little to say in response to those who say that Alex isn’t talented enough to rise above the poor to mediocre talent around them and make them better.
The argument goes that great quarterbacks like Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers, and gulp Rodgers are so good they can make something out of the lower talent around them. Smith needs awesome talent around him to look good and will flounder if he has crap talent.
Jim Harbaugh doesn't just WANT winners, he MAKES them!

Oh, well, we didn’t have long to wait to see what they were going to do next. I like Tolzein, not just for his Thursday night performance against us (although that must have greatly influenced the decision). He was extremely accurate in College and completed 74.3% of his passes in his final year with Wisconsin and he has a great arm. From what I have seen, he is basically a pocket passer, but can run pretty well if he gets outside the pocket. I think he will be able to challenge Kaep for the #2 spot.
Because Highlight reels are so misleading, here’s one of Tolzein:
Very accurate QB
saw some very impressive throws, watch min 3:10, shows a very calm pocket QB, even with the rush in his nose, a perfect pass over the DB, beautiful rainwbow for a TD very nice play.
the completion over Culliver in the sidelines comes to mind … if Harboug wants him I want him too !!!

very poised in the poket, when the rush is closing in, love the little jumping before the realese setting his feets before letting go and the pump fakes!! Alice cant do that very often …. plus, nice throws in trafic putting the ball where only his reciver can get it, I just see the weak arm throwing to the sidelines but not on deep ones
Alex and two rookies
I kinda like the idea. Harbaugh’s going all in. If this year is anything like the preseason, it’s going to be a wild ride with a lot of growing pains. We may as well look for our QBOTF while we’re at it.
Interesting connection per Eric Branch
Tolzien’s OC at Wisconsin was Paul Chryst, Geep Chryst’s brother.
I agree love the move as well...
Besides him completing 74% of his passes in college at Wisconsin as said before. This guy was looked at waaay prior to the San Diego game. You have to remember that Harbaugh wanted Tolzeins’ OCoord from Wisconsin to be on his coaching staff. The OCoord in hand is no other than Geep Chryst brother, Paul Chryst. Paul Chryst & Wisconsin also run an offensive system that is WCO oriented. So the 49ers staff have LOTS of information & game tape about Scott Tolzein much prior to that game San Diego game!!!

Tolzein is accurate, I like accuracy
He completed a gaudy 74.9% of his passes in his last season at Wisconsin. Of course, that may not translate to the pro level but he showed his accuracy against our 2nd/3rd string D pretty well last Thursday night and I’m sure that’s why he is now a 49er. The concerns about him are he is a traditional pocket passer and not very mobile (but can run when he does get outside the pocket). He also has a tendency to throw critical interceptions and he didn’t aquit himself very well in the biggest game of his career so far (the Rose Bowl).
Overall, I think this is a solid pickup for a developmental QB, but where does it leave us if Smith goes down? If he does get injured for any length of time, we are basically hoping that either a rookie QB or one with a single season in the NFL catches fire. Becuas eof his lack of mobility, I think Tolzein is going to need to play behind a strong O-line to succeed and I’m not sure we have that yet. Kaep, on the other hand, has a ton of mobility, but his passing game still needs a lot of work. Stay Healthy, Alex.
Correction: we now have two Rookies backing up Smith.
Tolzein was picked up as a UFA this year not last.

The kid got sacked 5x by our D. If you can still keep your poise through all that, then you’re a QB who can make it in the NFL; I don’t care what anybody says.

NOOOOOO McBLT was our FUTURE!!!!!
I feel hungry now for some reason after typing that.
Then I guess we'll cut
A safety. As much as I know everyone would like it to be norris it won’t. They kept 2 te’s and 2fb’s so if they were to get rid of norris they’d need another te or fb. Accept it, norris is here for the long haul.

are we gonna carry
3 QB’s on the active game roster then or just 2?
by Doni S on Sep 4, 2011 12:51 PM PDT via iPhone app reply actions
I'm guessing 3...
…NFL added one more active slot for Sundays, so teams no longer have to declare an “emergency QB” but can keep all 3 active if they want.
hmm, wonder who coach goes to if Alex goes down…hopefully we won’t have to find out.
