49ers Practice Squad, Roster Update
Fooch's Note: Xavier Omon is added to the group below as he makes seven on the 49ers practice squad. That leaves one more spot.
Things have quieted down a bit since the hubbub of the Scott Tolzien waiver claim (we really are a sad lot, aren't we?). The 49ers are slowly working to acquire their 2011 practice squad as they sign a variety of players they cut yesterday. For now they would appear to have the following players joining the practice squad:
C Chase Beeler
TE Konrad Reuland
WR Joe Hastings
OL Derek Hall
CB Cory Nelms
OLB Monte Simmons
RB Xavier Omon
The team had reportedly signed McLeod Bethel-Thompson to the practice squad but then released him an hour or so later. I'd imagine he was signed to the squad in case they did not win their claim on Tolzien and when they won they claim they decided to release McBLT. No other significant explanation for it.
The 49ers have not officially announced their practice squad signings, but if these six are unofficially official, that leaves two spots on the team. The team released Keaton Kristick to make room for Tolzien on the 53-man roster and Kristick still has PS eligibility. All the 49ers rookies are eligible for the squad as well as FB Jack Corcoran, LB Alex Joseph, OG Nick Howell, WR Kevin Jurovich, S Chris Maragos, RB Xavier Omon, and S Curtis Taylor. I haven't seen any indications they have signed elsewhere yet.

Geep Chryst (QB Coach)
is the brother of Tolzein’s OC at Wisco, I guess he got an inside scoop
Geep Chryst
is that the luxury version of the Geep Cherokee?
4 wheel drive plus turbo flight... and a hot tub for those long drives
"Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, either way, YOU'RE RIGHT !"
nice?
2 or 4 dvd players? separate feeds? would hate to only be able to watch one movie at a time in my hot tub on those long drives. Some movies aren’t worth watching if you’re not watching something else too.
Split screen with 6 DVD slots, sound is selectable. Did I mention the wet bar?

I hear next year's model comes with an indoor golf course.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
nooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
now that he has signed with the Rams he was our future? Before that, didn’t really care outside of the fact it’s sad to see anyone cut.
funny how division rivals keep snapping up old niners
and they do better than us. seems to say we thoroughly underutilized a bunch of people
don't think balmer and robinson did better as seahawks
don’t think wragge will do better as a ram, just sad to see anyone with detailed playbook info leave to a rival.
that signing has to be to find out what Harbaugh & Co
is up to. As a division rival they probably have no idea what we’re going to be like and are looking for an edge
Or they could watch the Seahawks game.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

some of it
it’s not like coach was showcasing our offense during preseason. not even in close proximity.

Shame we couldn't find a way to keep him
Now the Rams will know at least a little of what the Offensive plan is.

Practice Squad Eligibility
I thought a players have 3 seasons max on the practice squad? Omon was drafted in 2008, this would be his fourth year, ie not PS eligible. I know ESPN has him listed as eligible, just trying to work out that inconsistency
PS
It might have to do with how much time he spent on the 53-man roster in Buffalo and the time he bounced around practice squads in Seattle and New York (Jets).

earlier you posted this
If served two seasons on a practice squad, are eligible for a third season only if the team has at least 53 players on its active/inactive list for the duration of that player’s employment.
and that seems to be the rules everywhere, just can’t figure out why he gets a 4th season, maybe he missed enough time on the PS during that time?
or can a player be on the PS forever
as long as they have never been on the active/inactive list?
no
Can’t be on forever…Not really sure what the exception is here, but there’s something.

Official
The 49ers made seven practice squad signings official
C C.Beeler
T D.Hall
WR J.Hastings
CB C.Nelms
RB X.Omon
TE K.Reuland
LB M.Simmons.
7 spots filled
one left – the one that will be cut for Tolzien. My money is on colin jones. Even if he’s had a great camp, there’s not enough tape on him for another team to snatch him up
Kristick
They already cut Kristick to clear room for Tolzien. So maybe him.

In other news...
Virgil Green makes the Broncos roster. Ronald Johnson not added to practice squad.
Gimme 1 round!
you rather have had green over johnson? kaapernick would have looked much better in preseason.

He was our official Virgil Green advocate during the draft threads.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
Good call on that one.
He still wouldn’t have made the 49ers roster though.

He'd be the TE on our practice squad IF he didn't make the roster
and I think he makes the roster as our 3rd TE/3rd FB/3rd slot WR
Gimme 1 round!

Happy to see Omon and Reuland on the PS
both these guys have a shot at making the team, judging by their pre-season performances.
Looks like Morgan and Ginn are our first string WR's
Also, Spencer is lagging behind Brown and Brock. Huh. This is according to nfl.com: http://www.nfl.com/teams/sanfrancisco49ers/depthchart?team=SF
Suppose it’ll change shortly.
can not be accurate, spillman over reggie smith.

WR
The 49ers have been starting Morgan and Ginn and then getting Edwards in quickly. I’ve got to think that’s the only reason for having them listed as first string for now.

Who gets to "dress up"
OK – of the Practice Squad, and the 53, I know X-Number (46 or 47) dress on game day. When do Practice Squad and non-dressd for game players get to wear uniforms?
Little light on ILB's? or is it just me.....
Starters: Willis & Bowman
Backup: Grant………….maybe Costanzo but he is here for sp teams
After this, who else can play ILB to give these guys a breather or fill-in on a one week basis? I’ve heard applewhite has played some ILB but just hoping this year this doesn’t turn into a position of need.
Niners,Nets,Reds & USC!!!
The Most Interesting Man In The World---->Mikhail Prokhorov!!!
yes he did...
but applewhite’s position and why he is originally here is to play OLB

Looks about right
2 ILB’s, Willis and Bowman. 2 backups, Grant and Costanzo
2 OLB’s, Brooks and Haralson. 2 backups, Applewhite and Smith
Who knows? Though Scott Tolzien wasn’t drafted by anyone in the draft (why he wasn’t now seems a mystery), he could turn out to be something special. And now the Niners have him. Who knows? As the song goes, “This could be the start of something big.” I’m going to keep my fingers crossed and follow any articles on how he plays from here on. Who knows? Could something special be brewing for the 49ers? Time will tell, but for now, one thing is sure. Harbaugh and Co. are doing everything they can to make the Niners better. I as a life-time Niner fan I couldn’t ask for more.
Probably the same reason Dobbs went undrafted; overlooked
and bad scouting reports.

It's all good.....
I think young Jed should be given an “Atta Boy” personally for his accomplishments in such a short span of time. The domino effect has been fascinating to watch: Baalke, the Harbaugh move, then Habaugh and the staff he assembled, then the draft moves, then addition by subtraction and on and on and on….. And the end result is us fans finally at a point of looking forward to the season – instead of dreading it.
Remember to drop some bread crumbs...
We’re not out of the woods yet.
But yes, I am excited about watching some West Coast Harball.
would have
liked to see Norris cut, but I think we’ll do ok all considering. Just need the o-line to be consistent.
