49ers Reportedly Sign LB Tavares Gooden To One-Year Deal
The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly signed former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Tavares Gooden to a one year deal. Ravens Insider Aaron Wilson reported the Ravens and 49ers were discussing a possible trade for Gooden but could never come to terms and the Ravens finally released him. Gooden was the Ravens third round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft but he seemed to regress a bit from 2009 to 2010.
SB Nation has a deal with Fantasy Sports Services that provides scouting reports for NFL players and they had this to say about Gooden:
An athletically-gifted and versatile linebacker. A very smooth player who excels in coverage. Reads the action well and flashes on the scene. Can be a prolific tackler. Not a big pass-rushing threat.
Over at ESPN, their Insider scouting report reflects similar comments in regards to his athleticism. The question appears to be if he can develop some manner of consistency. With the release of Keaton Kristick, Gooden would likely be battling Larry Grant for backup playing time at inside linebacker.
The question now is who will get cut to make room for Gooden. I know a lot of people are quick to say Moran Norris, but the team does have a whole lot of defensive lineman. Could we see one of them get cut to make room for Gooden?

Gooden is an upgrade
over who we had behind Willis, Bowman and Grant. He is a nice little signing.
Yes, I just did Twitter. Follow me for ultra intelligent insight.

He's probably not going to.
I’ve realized and accepted that if it was going to happen, it would’ve already.

yea its a shame but the ole MN is staying again........./sigh
it would make sense though to cut Jones & then put him on PS to fill 8th spot

fingers crossed....
Please let it be Moran. We can send Gore a bouquet of flowers and “condolences” card later.

Spillman stays...
…if Seely has anything to say about it.
Don't think it will be C. Jones
Too much speed..plus too many at the safety position not under contract next year.
if we were worried about speed and safety position...
Mays would still be here. Jones, Tukuafu, Spillman, Costanzo or (please let it be) Norris are likely candidates.

Mays ran a 4.4 but played like a 4.7. No presence on the field.. reaction time was horrible. Seemed to have absolutely no instinctive playmaking ability on the field.
yet Jones on has shown uncontrollable speed on special teams.
Outruns the play on just about every coverage. Not ready for the final 53 IMO.

where it seems for now he belongs..

Mays ran a 4.3 flat at the combine
and as a run stopper he played that fast. Covering and playing center field he was never good at but he’s a much more solid tackler than Colin Jones who overruns his punt coverage all the time anyways.
Gimme 1 round!

I;m not saying I'm a Norris fan by any means
But you have to have someone as good or better to replace him.
We could have gone after someone like LeRon McClain but we didn’t. That was disappointing to me. But we have to have SOMEONE to lead block. I guess the coaches think he’s the best we have right now.
This
is gonna be interesting. From one brother to the other AND they’ll facing off against the other this season. Makes you sorta wonder what John might have missed that Jim didn’t, no? Or maybe Fangio just liked what he saw

its a one year deal
These are stop gaps until Harbaugh and gets his players. It doesn’t hurt getting somebody that knows the Ravens offense to

This time of year, it's a numbers game
With a 53 man roster every team, more or less, has to release players they would keep if they could. I’ve often wondered why the NFL sets the limit at 53? I think 66 would make more sense, as it is the equivalent of being 3 deep at every non-kicking position

Maybe they're keepin it in the family
John told Jim, “Hey, don’t bother with the offensive lineman, you need all you have. Just wait a couple of days and we’ll just release him for you. Happy birthday!”

Applewhite
If the Niners do sign this LB, Applewhite could be the guy cut, even though they play different positions. I have a feeing that Harbaugh likes his ST roles players (Jones, Spillman, Costanzo) and knows that to have a winning record his ST units will have to better than the opponent each week.
- Thank you SF Giants for an incredible 2010 season and painting the City orange & black!
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
This.
Really good point. That’s one aspect of the game he can hope to dominate the opponent week in week out with just a little more attention taken on the roster.

cant imagine
only going with one OLB backup though.
gotta be costanzo or collin jones. tukuafu, williams, and dobbs would not clear waivers. that is why we have 7 active D lineman.
