49ers 53-Man Roster Updates: Tavares Gooden In, Player X Out

The 49ers had an active Sunday as they filled out seven of the eight spots on their practice squad, added QB Scott Tolzien via waiver claim, and ended the night by agreeing to terms with former Ravens linebacker Tavares Gooden. The Gooden signing hasn't had pen to paper yet, but it should get wrapped up today.

The Gooden signing becomes official once the 49ers release another player to balance out the 53-man roster. Folks are thinking Colin Jones is the likely option to be released in part because Gooden can handle special teams contributions alongside his reserve linebacker role (BranchLam). If Jones is only sticking around because of special teams contributions, he would seem to be most likely on the bubble. We'll likely find out the decision later this morning.

In looking over the remaining roster, the question this week becomes what players will fill in the 46-man active roster. It used to be a 45-man active roster with one emergency QB listed as inactive, but the league has changed the rule now to a strictly 46-man active roster and no more inactive "emergency QB."

The seven inactives will change many weeks in part because injuries affect whether some are inactive in a given week. This week is a good example as we could see both Reggie Smith and Shawntae Spencer inactive if they are not sufficiently recovered by this weekend. Michael Person is a likely inactive player, and Daniel Kilgore might be as well depending on how comfortable the team is with only Adam Snyder and Alex Boone as backup offensive linemen.

I wouldn't be surprised if Scott Tolzien was inactive given that he is just now learning the playbook. Although that leaves the 49ers with just Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick and that is quite a roll of the dice.

That puts us at a maximum of five players, thus needing two more inactives. I'd imagine one of either Demarcus Dobbs or Will Tukuafu is number six and for this first week, maybe Tavares Gooden as well since he too is just learning the playbook. There's also the question of whether Michael Crabtree is good to go by Sunday. He is off the PUP list and not wearing a boot on his injured foot anymore, but there is no other word on his status.

I've posted the 53-man roster (set at 54 until someone is released in place of Gooden) after the jump, so check it out and let us know who could be inactive this weekend.

53 MAN ROSTER

Just to set things straight, no team can go to 54 roster player’s at anytime and if they want to sign someone they have to cut someone.

Seems pretty obvious to me that Tukuafu would be the guy to get dropped...

Tuk is a decent 3-4 end with practice squad eligibility. It seems unlikely that he would be grabbed by somebody else, and since it’s unlikely that he’d be active on game days, why not try to release him and stash him on the ’Squad?

I hope 2011 is Harbaugh-some!

yeah

plus we’re still heavy on the DL; he’s the only one who could probably be released safely.

Ninjames on Anthony Dixon's Tweeting:
"He’s going for the ‘T’ key, he should probably turn to it, but he stops and checks out the ‘R’ key first, then doubles back for a look at the ‘Y’ key, then by the time he decides to go back to ‘T’ to get some words typed, he’s brought down for a two-yard loss, ending up with the ‘G’ key."

Well, Jones could probably be released even more safely...

but he has more special teams value, which could make him active on game days. The D-Line is really deep, especially for a 3-4 team. Tukuafu would only be activated if he there had been some injury the previous game.

I hope 2011 is Harbaugh-some!

I think Tukuafu is going to be in the active 45

I think Jones is the guy that would get dropped. Costanzo and Spillman are the active special teamers. Jones to PS, they left a spot for him.

by whistlingmountain on Sep 5, 2011 8:00 AM PDT up reply actions

The case for Tukuafu not being among the active 45 is that ...

Dobbs clearly has better pass rush ability. If you’re going to keep a non-ST player active, you want him to have unique attribute, and Smith and Dobbs looked great on the right side of the DL on passing downs.

I hope 2011 is Harbaugh-some!

Dobbs among the inactive?

seriously? They bench a talent like that instead of putting him in the rotation? I don’t see that happening but ok…

I hope Jones is the one

and we stash him and Kristick on the PS, lose Oman. Seems like a nice dude but never gonna be great in this league

i'm going to go ahead and throw this out there

get rid of goldson?

M. Williams looks better in my opinion. Dashon looked pretty bad in just about every preseason game. plus reggie will be healthy soon.

think we can trade him and get a late pick?

by brenrobb on Sep 5, 2011 8:40 AM PDT reply actions

or even

RJF of Ray McDonald? i mean our problem is we have too many young guys at DL that we like so much. So we could actually play them some, and try and acquire some extra picks next year

by brenrobb on Sep 5, 2011 8:45 AM PDT up reply actions

actually

the way we draft maybe that is a horrible idea…

by brenrobb on Sep 5, 2011 8:45 AM PDT up reply actions

serious?

I just cant see McDonald traded, he just got 20M with 7M Guaranteed.

RJF is a solid backup.

Jones or Tukuafu go for Gooden.

Spillman is to good of a ST player.

by AB83Rules on Sep 5, 2011 8:50 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah i know...

i just think we would lose either one of them. and i’d hate to.
but there is no way we could go with 7DL and 6S

by brenrobb on Sep 5, 2011 8:55 AM PDT up reply actions

If everyone has similar ability, why not go with 7 DL?

Keep rotating in fresh horses. It’s worked before. 6 safeties does seem like too many, though.

Nobody wanted him as a free agent.

I doubt anyone wants him and wants to give up picks for him.

C.J. Spillman....has 0 ability at S

Colin Jones is fast…like Ricky Bobby……I think they keep him, they did draft him for his special teams ability.

by ericalancanty on Sep 5, 2011 8:43 AM PDT reply actions

He's a better safety than Jones

and he’s only a 3rd year pro, he’s got upside, plus he’s awesome on special teams (better than Jones, again).

Rip on the FO for having Patience.........There is that word again....

But the Rvens wanted one of our O-Lineman as return for a trade with Gooden, but Baalke said no and they couldn’t agree to terms. Then the Ravens cut Gooden and the 49ers were able to get him with nothing in return.

Depending on what they signed him at, they could have saved some money too, by not picking up his contract. From what I have seen it looks like he was a RFA and his contract was a low one.

by ericalancanty on Sep 5, 2011 8:56 AM PDT reply actions

I know that I'm beating a dead horse, but isn't it obvious ... dump Norris!!

Then Jones will have to go to the Practice Squad when we sign a blocking TE.

by 49erFanSince1950 on Sep 5, 2011 9:55 AM PDT reply actions

I was writing a VERY similar post (I even used the expression "beating a dead horse") when yours

appeared…

If Norris does stay around, perhaps jack-of-all-trades Bruce Miller will also be groomed to be the #3 TE (in addition to ST ace, FB, HB, and perhaps even situational pass rusher…)

After all was said and done, a lot more got said than done.

by OldJock on Sep 5, 2011 10:40 AM PDT up reply actions

why not let him play qb too?

Call me cautiously optimistic....because I know what the Niners do to people who have real optimism (see the last 8 years).

I wish we had Arnaz Battle or Michael Robinson still, then they could be our 3rd QB

CRAZY

I would like to have MR for special teams as he is one of, or the top player on ST’S, We got TZ-12 now, we don’t need AB or MR to be our 3rd QB. CUT AND DRY.

QUESTION

Can anybody explain to me where do the 49er’s stand as to the two players who were hurt in camp. Bogan & Holcomb, do the 49er’s still have their rights or they on the injured reserved, as I see it only TE Nate Byham is the only name on it, IR. Where are Bogan & Holcomb being held at?….LOL…Sounds like their kidnapped. Bogan is the real deal and next year he and Holcomb will be like 2 xtra drafts. I hope someone can get me up to speed on this……THAXS ALL

by BEETLE49715 on Sep 5, 2011 11:31 AM PDT reply actions

yep

Holcomb has a ruptured achilles and Bogan torn ACL.

Both were waived and then cleared waivers, and went to our IR list.

Did it back in early august.
