2012 NFL Playoffs: 49ers Players Getting A Little Excited

It's safe to say, 49ers players are just a little bit pumped about this game:

The opening minutes on offense and defense will really be interesting to watch. The 49ers have a ton of players who haven't played in postseason action since they were playing a bowl game back in college. I am not overly concerned about lack of playoff experience in the overall context of the game, but in those first few minutes when the adrenaline is pumping, then it becomes interesting. Things calm down at some point, but the key is to make sure the adrenaline doesn't cost them early.

I hear ya

I have to say that I share the very same feelings that Joe has. I’ve been a 9er Faithful all my life and to have this divisional matchup this weekend just makes me so proud to say that I have been a true 9er through thick and thin. Go Niners!

Really, the main guy who has to stay cool, calm & collective is Alex

Everyone else being Jacked Up is a good thing as long as they stay Jacked but focused & smart too.

49ers have to be one big collective FIST striking with devastating power.

hopefully they will see that they owe us some calls

i hate to dwell on old stuff but that chopblock was mularky and possibly cost us the game!!! You owe us a HUGE call Jon

the funny part

is that on the Sound FX thing, Alex asks about the call when it happens, and the refs says something along the lines that it was a “huge chop block”….obviously he didn’t really see it because it was nothing lol

Alright, I'll bite on some of this

My screenname’s actually a Giants reference- their 2010 “torture” season. Duane Kuiper loved to talk about how their games were so intense that it felt like torture (especially when they won). I thought about this, but always felt that it was the Giants who were torturing their opponents by keeping the games so close, but still winning with their pitching. I picked “TortureOpp” for my screenname at MCC, also playing somewhat off of some stats that have “Opp” at the end, denoting “against opponent.”

I was a Niners’ fan basically the day I was born. I grew up in the Joe Montana era, and he was my childhood hero.

I have so many great Niners memories, including many of the Super Bowls, but I think the one that excited me the most was the Catch II. I did the loudest yelling for that one, and Favre’s reaction was priceless.

I think my favorite moment from this season was Alex’s 4th down TD pass to Walker against the Lions.

Biggest heartbreaker as a Niner fan? I mentioned a few days ago when Billy Joe Tolliver’s Hail Mary pass got caught as the game ended in 1991 and knocked the Niners out of the playoffs. It was a serious shock, and I don’t think I got over it for weeks.

My favorite 49ers player of all time used to be Joe Montana. I think it’s Alex Smith now. He’s the toughest bastard I’ve ever seen.

I went to the home Rams game this year. Great game.

I never did before, but I have to say I really dislike the Lions now. Their HC is just a douche with an inferiority complex. I think his attitude trickles down to the players, too.

Alright, that’s enough writing.

He authored five fourth-quarter comeback wins this season, including four on the road. He’s also gotten some impressive skins on his belt, besting quarterbacks like Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Matthew Stafford and Michael Vick. ..!!

I'm worried about the O-Line picking up the blitz

But that’s where home field advantage should kick in. Just need to concentrate on the snap count and trust that both Goodwin and Alex make the correct line adjustments. If they do that, they can catch the Saints in a few offsides calls. I hope Harb and GRo call a lot of misdirection plays to keep them guessing and force them to hesitate and not over pursue.

Brees will have to go silent count, Alex won’t. That really is a huge advantage for the 49ers

Yea

It also has to do with the fact that even if Alex Smith was better than he is, he likely still wouldn’t out-duel Brees straight up. He shouldn’t have to, which is the entire point.

We know what it will take to win this game and it is much of the same stuff we’ve seen all year.

by Virginia9er on Jan 12, 2012 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

Out-dueling him is not an ideal situation...

But I am not uncomfortable with it like most people are. He out-threw him in the last matchup.

Obviously Brees is the better quarterback and everyone in the world knows it; but that isn’t saying much because there are 31ish other quarterbacks in the NFL that are worse than Drew Brees. But that doesn’t make Smith incompetent or something; it also doesn’t equal that he cannot prevail over the Saints. All he has to do is like he said, “out score him”… with our defense, that makes it a lot more manageable. Team football goes a long way… and if I am picking 46 guys in this game over the other 46 guys, I am rolling with our talent over theirs.

1st play:

Alex take the snap. Ginn runs for an end around from the left and Crabtree from the right. Alex fakes the reverse to Ginn and does a statue of liberty to crabtree. Crabtree then throws it across his body 50 yards downfield to a streaking Ginn for a TD

Who do you think the Saints have identified as our defensive weak link to attack?

I know one thing, they must have clearly discovered that teams did pretty well throwing deep on us….a bit concerned there as that is a Saints strength, throwing long for chunks of yardage at a time.

by BigMar on Jan 12, 2012 5:51 PM PST reply actions

The secondary has to constantly disguise and mix it's coverages

I think that’s the key getting stops and turnovers. Brees is so good and so quick at reading defenses and knows how to manipulate the safeties. If he starts to see tendencies and figures out what the defense is doing, pre-snap, its over.

by agchee on Jan 12, 2012 6:14 PM PST up reply actions

Saints Interviews

Has anybody else seen or read about the Saints players and coaches press conference and interviews? They are very confident in this game. Almost dismissive to a point. Brees calling A. Smith a “game manager”. Payton giving the opponent credit as usual but then follows up with a smug comment. I hope we beat the life out of them. I hope they quit. Not get hurt or any serious injuries. I just want them to give up like Detroit did at the end of that game and how the Bucs did during the entire game. It will take a crazy beating of our defense to do that, and somewhat unlikely but one can hope.

by Johnveeskys on Jan 12, 2012 6:09 PM PST reply actions

Imagination

Do you guys really need to just make stuff up? The Saints have been nothing but complimentary this week. Payton voted for Harbaugh as COY. You may be two games from the Super Bowl with about 40%, if not more, of the media picking you and all we hear is how you’re disrespected and about some preseason game. That and how terrible we are outdoors, ignoring the 12-4 record over the past three years. Keep talking about the Seattle and St. Louis games, that’s right. I know you haven’t been in the playoff for a long, long time, but act like you’ve been here before. For the record, Smith is a game manager. Brees almost doubled him up in yardage. What do you want him to say, he’s up there with Brady and Rodgers.

by jpspear on Jan 12, 2012 7:59 PM PST up reply actions

FYI... and in case you've already forgotten...

Alex Smith (a.k.a. “game manager”) out-threw your precious Drew Brees in the last meeting on MNF.

He also orchestrated a 2-minute comeback on your defense at the end of the game and our coaching staff was pretty incompetent in leaving any time left on the clock. But those types of blunders, along with the snap on the first play for a safety are not happening this year.

He “managed” to come back on that ass for the most part had it not been for an idiot HC.

Keep under-estimating him and the team.

Saints are 37 and 9 regular season over the last three years, 4-1 in the playoffs. How have the Niners done? You wish you sucked that bad.

All good things come to end sometime.

We’ve sent a lot of teams spiraling down the drain this year…

Who better than the Niners (a team who pwned you for 2 decades) to make that happen?

Keep yappin’

I remember

Trust me, I remember. Which is why if San Fran went 0-16 for the next 20 years I’d be okay. I was thinking about that today. Back then, at least during the Mora years I remember you had an unstoppable offense led by a future HOF quarterback and we had a game manager QB with a great defense. I like things this way better.

I am very curious to see what happens. We really have played a lot of okay defenses this year, but other than Houston, nobody special. If you take a hard look at who you’ve played, especially at home, it’s worse than that. Like the popularity of Jersey Shore I have no explanation for the Rams game. On the other hand we’ve dominated everybody since then. Titans and Falcons had a couple of late drives to make it close, but that’s it. Unlike most I don’t expect a close game. Your defense or our offense is going to get undressed by the other, but I really don’t know which.

If Roman Harper is out for us, your chances go way up. Losing Lance Moore is unfortunate, but we’re very deep at WR. Harper is our enforcer and would be a bad loss against a good running team.

Alex Smith is not a game manager...

People who think that are totally misinformed. They look at a stat line and his history and draw their conclusions from that. But he has been anything but a game manager this year. He’s playing insanely good football right now and Harbaugh is bringing the best out of him. This is only the beginning of things to come.

In a lot of ways, this is a rookie like season for him. First time anyone has really cared or taken the time with him.

Total misconception by way too many folks.

Playoff records..

can be misleading because you don’t have the chance to rack up multiple losses.

Don’t get touchy. Our fans never wore bags over their faces.

Playoff records

I guess it’s true you can’t rack up multiple losses and I admit the 49ers haven’t lost a playoff game in about a decade.

I don't want the Niners to injure Drew Brees this weekend... I want them to do something much worse...

I want the Niners to turn him in to Billy Joe Tolliver for a game…
