Overrated/Underrated?
I'm writing a guide for the upcoming season and I had a few questions about the 49ers. I though the best place to find some answers would be from the fans themselves. Congratulations on your division championship this year.
Who is the most overrated Niner?
Most underrated?
Rookie of the year for the 49ers?
What do the Niners need to address in the 2012 draft?
Is the sole reason for the Niners turn around coach Harbaugh?
Is Alex Smith the right choice for qb? In other words as a fan, do you believe he can carry you to a Super Bowl?
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Answers:
2. Most underrated? Tarell Brown
Brown gets a lot of hate from Niner fans, which is understandable, I guess, since he didn’t perform well his first four years. But he’s done pretty good this year. He has 4 interceptions, a career high, and he’s done pretty well in coverage. He’s the kind of player that when he makes a good play fans just shrug it off and don’t really acknowledge it. But when he makes a mistake, all the haters come out. Honorable mention: Kyle Williams
3. Rookie of the year for the 49ers? Aldon Smith
This one is pretty obvious. He led all rookies in sacks with 14 and was one sack away from breaking Jevon Kearse’s rookie record. He also did that playing only in sub packages and playing less than 50% of the time. In run support he’s held up pretty well. It’s a two-man race between Smith and Von Miller for Defensive Rookie of the Year. Honorable mention: Bruce Miller
4. What do the Niners need to address in the 2012 draft? WR, G/C, OLB, CB
We need a big, red zone threat at WR. I like Dwayne Bowe, but he’ll likely be too expensive. Adam Snyder is decent, he’s also a free agent, but I think we can upgrade there. Jonathan Goodwin has been good and bad this year. He struggled early on in the season, then looked pretty good for the middle part, and now he’s kind of so-so. He’s 33 so we need to get younger, although I like Daniel Kilgore as our future there. I like Ahmad Brooks, but we can get better there. It’d be nice to get another pass-rusher opposite Aldon Smith. Assuming Carlos Rogers resigns, I’m okay with Brown and rookie Chris Culliver as the other two corners. But we could upgrade at that position also.
5. Is the sole reason for the Niners turn around coach Harbaugh? Not the SOLE reason
Harbaugh is the biggest reason, obviously. But the additions of other coaches, as well as keeping some of the coaches from the previous regime, adding Carlos Rogers and Donte Whitner in free agency, and NaVorro Bowman and Ray McDonald becoming starters really improved the defense. Michael Crabtree turning into the receiver we thought he’d be when we drafted him is another reason. And also the improvement of Alex, which you could attribute to Harbaugh.
6. Is Alex Smith the right choice for qb? In other words as a fan, do you believe he can carry you to a Super Bowl? For the short term
I’m fine with Alex signing a 2-4 year deal and being the starter. But I still have concerns about him. Can he carry us to a Super Bowl? Yes… as long as he has a good running game and defense.
I didn’t answer your first question because I honestly couldn’t pick someone.
I said Brown is the most underrated and what do you know?
He makes a fantastic grab for an interception.
Looks like a good idea
1. Most Underrated – Josh Morgan. He’s always been better than most Niner fans want to admit and he was our leading receiver this year before that freak injury in the Bucs game.
2. Most Overrated – Vernon Davis. Catch the ball Vernon. For the love of god catch the ball, and do it without bunny hopping. And after the catch? It is allowed to use your size against the defense. Learn from 5’10" 186lb Kyle Williams how to act like a 6’3" 250lb receiver. You are not a delicate flower.
3. Rookie of the Year – Aldon Smith. No need to explain why. If we can give out two it has to go to Bruce Miller.
4. Draft Needs – TE, RG, C, S. We run too many ‘22 personnel’ formations to invest in another wide receiver that can’t get on the field but don’t have 2 TE that can both block and be a receiving threat. Snyder is a backup tackle that was a huge upgrade in pass protection over Rachal but he can’t move anyone off the ball and neither can Goodwin. We’ll keep Goldson one way or another but we have too many 3 safety packages to allow Reggie “Toast” Smith and Maddy “Toast” Williams on the field.
5. Is Harbaugh the sole reason? The biggest but not the sole reason. It seems like on an organizational level we’ve actually started a commitment to winning. Obviously the hiring of Harbaugh has played into that but that commitment has to come from the top.
6. Is Alex the answer at QB? No I don’t think so. He’s damaged goods at this level and while I think he’s finally to the point where he won’t lose the game for us he’s not going to put the team on his back either. I think in the long run we’ll be looking to change the guard when it makes sense. Right now it doesn’t.

LOL
Catch the ball, Vernon?
Most yard for TE in a playoff game. :)
You say that like it proves something.
He had the TE touchdown record and then had a pretty disappointing season. I’m happy for him. I’m ecstatic for us. He had a monster game.
But he’s had major problems this year catching the ball because he wants to jump and catch it in his gut. It’s no coincidence that his huge plays for us last night were on routes where he did not have that option and was forced to make a catch.

Of course it proves something.
We do know now what he can do on a big stage.
Will he do it again? I sure hope so.
If he can do it on a big stage
I’d really love to see him do it on the small stage consistently.

So
You expect perfection from him I guess.

Not perfection
Just live up to his potential. Unfulfilled potential is the bane of this team.

Huh?
We’re going to the NFC Championship and hosting it because our reg season record was so good.
Exactly what bane are you referring to?
"One game at a time. Let's just keep it rolling." Justin Smith
Well lets see
We decided to pay Vernon as the highest paid TE in the NFL, and he’s hot and cold. He’s finally come on strong here at the end of the season and if he keeps it up then he’s golden, right where he needs to be.
But up until the last several games of the regular season he was dropping balls and shied away from contact instead of running through guys he had 50 pounds on.
We waited until halfway through this season for Crabtree to show up. He also had a bad case of the dropsies and his situational awareness was horrible. He didn’t know where his feet was, he didn’t know where the first down marker was on 3rd, and after the catch he was getting caught in a juke loop that killed his YAC potential.
Anthony Davis is another first rounder we are waiting to pan out. For the vast majoirty of the year he was a complete liability in pass protection and only 3 tackles in the league gave up more sacks — and we threw the least of any team except Jacksonville.
The games we’ve lost were because we hung too much on our defense and expected them to be perfect. The offense has to carry it’s weight and that starts with protecting the quarterback and catching the ball. When it does, we can beat anyone in the league on any day on any field.

As evidence for the last paragraph, I give you last Sunday.

my 2 cents
Who is the most overrated Niner? none, but if you really forced my hand I would probably go with VD
Most underrated? Ray McDonald
Rookie of the year for the 49ers? 99 Problems and winning this award ain’t one.
What do the Niners need to address in the 2012 draft? OL, S, WR
Is the sole reason for the Niners turn around coach Harbaugh? Not the sole reason, but of course he was a HUGE factor. I have to give the players a lot of credit as well.
Is Alex Smith the right choice for qb? In other words as a fan, do you believe he can carry you to a Super Bowl? Yes.

I bet you are gonna take back what you said
about VD being overrated lol.
lol darn right
"Cruelty, It’s not giving another person what they want. That’s our mindset on defense, to go out and play with everything we have and not give the other team anything." -Patrick Willis
and to be clear
I don’t mean overrated like “not good”. I just feel like a lot of people talk about him like he is the best in the league and his play hasn’t really lived up to it this year. Well until today :)

Then again
Crabtree has a great year but drops two clutch passes in a row Saturday just when mo was starting to go against us.

My choices
Most overrated: This one’s easy and I’m surprised no one’s mentioned it yet. Dashon takes it in a landslide. Not that he’s not good, but he blows way too many plays to be considered a Pro Bowler™. Honorable Mention – as posted above, Vernon Davis. Also, to a certain extent, Frank Gore, though he has excuses (he’s ALWAYS injured).
Most underrated: I think that everyone will give you different answers on this. My choice is Kendall Hunter. He’s a shifty back who can make people miss, and while he might be to small to ever be a #1 back, he’s actually been more effective than Frank Gore in recent weeks. Honorable Mentions – Ray McDonald, Kyle Williams. Also, Alex Smith would win this award if he wasn’t talked about so much.
Rookie of the year: Aldon Smith. Oh, you meant for the 49ers and not for the league? Honorable Mentions – Bruce Miller, Kendall Hunter
Draft Needs: OL, CB, WR. Possibly OLB but not a high priority.
Sole Reason: No. He’s a big part of it, but we definitely have to credit Trent Baalke for a perfect offseason, and as much as I don’t like to do it, Mike Nolan for setting up a darn talented team. Some of the players are playing much better than in previous years as well.
Alex Smith: Every fan will tell you different. I think his problem has been what’s around him, and that with a stable system and good receivers, he can finally make the leap to join the league’s great QBs. Will he ever be Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees etc? No, but he can be very very good.

VERNON DAVIS IS NOT OVERRATED.
For that matter, neither is Dashon Goldson. Change my vote on overrated to Joe Staley.

Now that I've given everyone else a day to make some guesses, here are the real answers:
Who is the most overrated Niner?
I woulda said Dashon Goldson, but he really stepped it up against the Saints. After a win like that, I can’t call anyone overrated.
Most underrated?
Brad Seeley, Special Teams Coach. Not long ago, special teams was a weakness in San Francisco. Brad Seeley gets hired and suddenly the 49ers have some of the best special teams in the history of football and dominate the field position battle in every single game.
Rookie of the year for the 49ers?
Aldon.
What do the Niners need to address in the 2012 draft?
Depends a lot on free agency. They have something like 20 expiring contracts. If Ahmad Brooks leaves, then OLB becomes a big need. If Carlos Rogers leaves, then SF will need a CB who can immediately be at least the nickel. The only positions that should be needs no matter what are WR (red zone offense needs a tall guy), RG (Rachal was given one last chance this year and had to be replaced by career backup Adam Snyder, who is going to be a free agent), and Safety (3 expiring contracts, including Madieu Williams and Reggie Smith who both suck).
Is the sole reason for the Niners turn around coach Harbaugh?
He’s the biggest reason for sure, but the additions of Carlos Rogers, Aldon Smith, Chris Culliver, Kendall Hunter, and Bruce Miller all helped. Credit to new GM Trent Baalke for an excellent first draft. Also, Ray McDonald, NaVorro Bowman, and Tarrell Brown were all promoted to being starters this year and rose to the challenge. Brad Seeley was another important addition (see above).
Is Alex Smith the right choice for qb? In other words as a fan, do you believe he can carry you to a Super Bowl?
I don’t think this team will ever need one player to carry them at all. Not under this regime. Yes, Alex Smith can win a Super Bowl as a member of this team. As for QBOTF, I won’t be the judge of that.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
Check it
Over-rated: Goldston…too inconsistent in pass coverage and will miss or over shoot on open field tackles. He’s good but not pro bowl good.
Under-rated: Ahmad brooks. I’m reaching a bit bc I still think Justin Smith is under ated, but Brooks has done a great job this year playing as the all-around OLB the Niners need opposite a one dimensional Haraylson and a still learning Aldon Smith. He’s been about as consistent and impactful as anyone on the team.
RoY: whatever nickname he has (ie cobra, 99 problems, All Done, etc), we know who deserves this award.
Needs addressed in draft: RG, WR, CB, S, TE ( not necessarily in that order)
Harbaugh sole reason for turnaround: yes and kind of. Yes bc he is a motivator, but understands what it realistically takes to win in the NFL. Yes bc he worked with Baalke to get the staff around him that would compliment him. Fangio, Seeley, Roman, so on and so on, each have a great resume and compliment each other and harbaugh brought them on board. Kind of bc Jed identified where he made a mistake with Singletary and got what’s looking like an awesome GM in Baalke. Ultimately the two got Harbaugh. Either way, it’s been an awesome turnaround
AS right choice? Carry to SB? I think these questions should be separated. It’s a lot like when people say AS is not elite. There are 2-3 QBs out of the 64+ in the NFL that are elite. AS is the right choice given a true opportunity like any talented player to be successful. He Should continue to be a good, poosibly great QB, so yes, right choice. With that, could he carry us to the SB? He’s making a pretty damn good case. And what, if we lose in the NFC championship game, will the AS haters come back out and find reasons why we should dump him? Face it, there are only a few QBs that legitimately can carry their team to the SB. The other good to great QBs do it with a team effort. Final say is yes.
2-3 QBs out of 64...
And two just went golfing.
