Divisional Round Afternoon Thread: Packers Vs. Giants

This is the main event of the day. The winner of this game faces the 49ers next week for the right to go to Indianapolis to play in the Super Bowl. The Packers and Giants square off in Lambeau Field in a rematch of their crazy regular season contest at the Meadowlands. The Packers escaped with a 38-35 victory on a last second field goal.

I'm not quite so sure I expect a similar result today. Whatever my desire is for the 49ers next playoff game, I think the Packers win by about ten today. They are back home and had some time to rest and recuperate. They had as much need for that bye week as anybody with some of their injuries.

The Packers sit as 7 1/2 point favorites and are getting back a key weapon in the form of Greg Jennings. If he can get on track, that is a huge weapons for them. They have been without Jennings for the past month, so getting him back is a big help for Aaron Rodgers.

The Giants are a bit banged up after last week's roll-up of the Atlanta Falcons, but they'll be all hands on deck for the game. Ahmad Bradshaw has missed some practice time, but said he will play today. This is not really a game you sit out barring a significant medical issue.

Does anybody see a Giants upset at Lambeau Field?

Ravens / Texans lost my interest, so I went to dig up some Harbaugh Gold on developing QB's.

First thing he teaches to any quarterback, day 1. “Your job is to protect the football. Every possession ends by sending our kicker on the field. Either a PAT, FG, or PUNT.”

On any out breaking or outside release routes, outs, digs, corners, goes — if you miss it, miss it wide. When in doubt, go way wide. If you miss it inside it’s going for 6 the other way.

On the first step of a drop you look straight centerfield. From there you look where you are throwing and read your key defender. If you are wanting to throw the flat | stick combo left, you put your eyes there and look to that defender. Your eyes tell you to throw, your feet tell you the timing. If the feet and the eyes don’t sync, you don’t make the throw.

Most important, the feet tell you when to move to the next progression. If you are standing there waiting for guys to get open bad things are going to happen.

Puts alot of Alex’s performance this year in context. He’s doing what he’s told.

Whomever wins, let it be 44-41 in OT when one team opens with a FG then the other team scores a TD to win. New rules plus an extra ten minutes of exhausting play.

by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 15, 2012 1:35 PM PST reply actions

We need a WR.

"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"

by rlott#42 on Jan 15, 2012 1:36 PM PST up reply actions

Don't know man

Next season (considering we resign Morgan and let Ginn go): Crabs, KW, Morgan. I believe we need a WR just not our top priority.

by neder on Jan 15, 2012 1:40 PM PST up reply actions

In the draft, though?

The Niners have a lot of young talent at WR, and the draft is meant to get young talent. If we get Morgan back, I think the Niners should look for another WR off the waiver wire. And this time around there’s a lot more talent than Edwards.

by Rhombus on Jan 15, 2012 2:18 PM PST up reply actions

My top 3 needs:

Free Safety
DE with potential to eventually replace Justin Smith
Tall, physical WR

by neder on Jan 15, 2012 1:37 PM PST up reply actions

Dobbs looked promising in the preseason

But I wouldn’t hang my hopes on him claiming he is the future Justin Smith. If we have a chance to get a premier 3-4 DE with one of our picks I say don’t hesitate.

by neder on Jan 15, 2012 1:39 PM PST up reply actions

We dont need to replace Smith next season, Dobbs had a whole season learning, gotta get a shot dirst.

We have more pressing needs. Smith has 3 years left. At least two.

"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"

by rlott#42 on Jan 15, 2012 1:41 PM PST up reply actions

That's the point

We do not need to replace him next season so if we get premier talent at the position and let him learn from Smith until he retires, then he can step in without any problem.

It really all depends on what the coaching staff thinks of Dobbs. Since we’ve only seen him in the preseason I wouldn’t rush to conclusions, but the FO might believe he is the guy.

by neder on Jan 15, 2012 1:42 PM PST up reply actions

Not necessarily first-round

But it’s a top-3 priority in my opinion. Why not get a starting caliber player and let him learn from the best in the biz?

by neder on Jan 15, 2012 1:46 PM PST up reply actions

I'm happy with Brooks on the other side of Aldon

I like Snyder at guard imo. I feel great at cornerback too.

Anyway, we should probably see how FA turns out before arguing over this

by rlott#42 on Jan 15, 2012 1:52 PM PST up reply actions

That we likely will carry 3 next year.

Takes 2 injuries to need 4, but by that point you can plug in an ILB there and see very little difference.

so that Davis can become an all pro Guard.

by brundylop on Jan 15, 2012 1:42 PM PST up reply actions

Oh you just reminded me

Backup guard so we can get rid of Chilo = #1 priority.

by neder on Jan 15, 2012 1:43 PM PST up reply actions

I like snyder as backup

which is why drafting a good RT and sliding Davis would be great.

by brundylop on Jan 15, 2012 1:44 PM PST up reply actions

I actually like Davis as a RT

He’s had some problems but the vast majority of those problems occurred with Chilo at RG.

by mtl9ers14 on Jan 15, 2012 1:45 PM PST up reply actions

Davis is going to be the RT for a while

they like him and they like Boone

the OTs are set, they need to gel, upgrade RG if they can, and make sure they have their long term C set

If they can resign Rogers and Brooks and tag Goldson they can go for an offensive weapon, which I think they need.

Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson
FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder

by whistlingmountain on Jan 15, 2012 1:58 PM PST up reply actions

While I want to see Davis at RG where he can be more effective

I think they will leave him at RT like you say, although I think Boone is a much better LT than RT.

RG and C are big question marks though. While Goodwin and Snyder have been decent in pass protection neither one have been blowing anyone off the ball. If we want to be a power running team we have to be making a big bubble in the middle.

Saints will try to retain him, it's an issue of money

Brees wants to get paid like Manning

Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson
FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder

by whistlingmountain on Jan 15, 2012 2:06 PM PST up reply actions

If they pay brees

there then one of colston and nicks will leave. I’d take either one.

by mtl9ers14 on Jan 15, 2012 2:08 PM PST up reply actions

I'm sure the 49ers would be happy to pick up Colston

I don’t know about Nicks

I think the 49ers would rather continue to draft their linemen and only sign FAs to short cheap deals.

Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson
FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder

by whistlingmountain on Jan 15, 2012 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

No need to overpay for an interior lineman.

I wouldn't

For that money I’d rather stay with Snyder. Not going to pay a guard that much.

don't we have plenty of cap space.

what’s the point of having it if you’re not going to spend it. And it’s also not like we have many holes to fill.

But giving a guard tackle money just because it’s burning a hole in your pocket is a bit short-sighted.

i'm talking about throughout the year

just watching most of the other top teams, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Manning, etc can drop back, stop, put the ball down, eat a power bar, take a swig of Gatorade, pick the ball back up and still have time to survey the field for a pass

by sanfranfanmdk on Jan 15, 2012 2:13 PM PST up reply actions

They drop everyone in coverage

Because their QBs are more respected. Alex gets blitzed cause they don’t fear him beating them with the pass.

by bignerd on Jan 15, 2012 2:14 PM PST up reply actions

We also

Run max protect too much. Defenses are reactive and if their key is blocking they will blitz. If you protect with 7, many teams will bring 7 — but they won’t bring them where you are blocking — and they still have a 1 man advantage in the secondary.

So many things in football are counter intuitive. You want less pressure? Open up the formation, widen the line splits, make those rushers come from further away and prevent the defense from disguising the blitz.

You want to run the ball in the middle better? Put in 4 WR and spread the defense out.

Want to line up in 2 TE 2 RB and throw the ball on max protect? Don’t be surprised when you see a 7 man blitz you can’t pickup because you couldn’t see where it was going to come from.

by bignerd on Jan 15, 2012 2:26 PM PST up reply actions

So then what is the purpose of the challenge system?

If they call it a fumble on the field, but converse and reverse it (for no apparent reason), then make it stand in the ‘actual’ challenge? Seems rather conflicting to me.

by Virginia9er on Jan 15, 2012 2:23 PM PST reply actions

The officials tend to swallow their whistles on close fumble calls so as to keep from doing a Hooch mistake.

That way the defense has a chance to clearly recover it, even if the call on the field is that the runner is down. Then, no matter what the call on the field is, either team can challenge.

Of course, if the refs screw up the review, the whole thing falls apart.

by Rhombus on Jan 15, 2012 2:25 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly. I understand how they like to let the play go, but then stick with it and let GB challenge to overturn it.

It was quite clear to me that live they thought it was a fumble, so that should be their call. But no they don’t want to make GB use another challenge, which should be completely irrelevant to the individual call being made.

Nicks is 6'1" 208

Both Crabs and Morgan are bigger — and Nicks isn’t a burner.

What you want is a big threat explosive offense — which you aren’t going to get as long as Alex has 2 seconds to throw or run for his life.

I've said this before

Crabtree was better, bigger, faster than Nicks in every way

but Nicks has taken advantage of everything in a passing offense. Crabtree has taken advantage of nothing, in a conservative offense.

Crabtree can be that guy though, his head isn’t right most of the time. Frustrating as hell.

but he still doesn’t not seem to be confident and aggressive toward the ball most of the time. The way he was in college.

Most of the regular season he was like that

He had a really good 4 game stretch around the 3Q of the season

but it took him a little while to get there and he kind of leveled off afterward

I like Crabtree, please don’t understand me, I think he was the only real WR threat on the team. But I think he can be better than Nicks, so that’s where my frustration is.

who are the officials going fix the game fo next week? They obviously did not wnat either the Niners or GMen in the CHampionship . Done did, 49ers vs. Giants for the Champioship like it should be. You can break records offensively, score a bunch of TDs, average how many points you want, but DEFENSE wins Championships..

by HAZAD365 on Jan 15, 2012 4:54 PM PST via mobile reply actions

True

but it wasn’t a defensive win. Same with the 49ers victory. Both wins were sealed by the offense with help from the defense.

Two cmpletely balanced teams.

by smileyman on Jan 15, 2012 4:57 PM PST up reply actions

You sure?

I saw key defensive plays, and Rodgers did most of the damage with his feet… Only 20 points for an offense that absolutely lit up the scoreboard this season…

by Takeo33 on Jan 15, 2012 4:58 PM PST up reply actions

There were key offensive plays too

great pocket presence by Eli Manning, great throws, and a great run at the end to seal the deal. (Speaking of the Giants)

It certainly wasn’t all on the offense, but neither was it all defense. Both units played exceptionally well
