Divisional Round Afternoon Thread: Packers Vs. Giants
This is the main event of the day. The winner of this game faces the 49ers next week for the right to go to Indianapolis to play in the Super Bowl. The Packers and Giants square off in Lambeau Field in a rematch of their crazy regular season contest at the Meadowlands. The Packers escaped with a 38-35 victory on a last second field goal.
I'm not quite so sure I expect a similar result today. Whatever my desire is for the 49ers next playoff game, I think the Packers win by about ten today. They are back home and had some time to rest and recuperate. They had as much need for that bye week as anybody with some of their injuries.
The Packers sit as 7 1/2 point favorites and are getting back a key weapon in the form of Greg Jennings. If he can get on track, that is a huge weapons for them. They have been without Jennings for the past month, so getting him back is a big help for Aaron Rodgers.
The Giants are a bit banged up after last week's roll-up of the Atlanta Falcons, but they'll be all hands on deck for the game. Ahmad Bradshaw has missed some practice time, but said he will play today. This is not really a game you sit out barring a significant medical issue.
Does anybody see a Giants upset at Lambeau Field?

Ravens / Texans lost my interest, so I went to dig up some Harbaugh Gold on developing QB's.
First thing he teaches to any quarterback, day 1. “Your job is to protect the football. Every possession ends by sending our kicker on the field. Either a PAT, FG, or PUNT.”
On any out breaking or outside release routes, outs, digs, corners, goes — if you miss it, miss it wide. When in doubt, go way wide. If you miss it inside it’s going for 6 the other way.
On the first step of a drop you look straight centerfield. From there you look where you are throwing and read your key defender. If you are wanting to throw the flat | stick combo left, you put your eyes there and look to that defender. Your eyes tell you to throw, your feet tell you the timing. If the feet and the eyes don’t sync, you don’t make the throw.
Most important, the feet tell you when to move to the next progression. If you are standing there waiting for guys to get open bad things are going to happen.
Puts alot of Alex’s performance this year in context. He’s doing what he’s told.

I'll be cheering for a rematch
Thanks and good luck to you guys, I think you can pull off the upset.
Good luck today
You got a legit shot but too many people are picking a road 9-7 team versus the 15-1 defending champs. Feels like a setup.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
We dat team that beat them Saints!
Wear each other out in OT
Whomever wins, let it be 44-41 in OT when one team opens with a FG then the other team scores a TD to win. New rules plus an extra ten minutes of exhausting play.

First round, biggest baddest mofo on the board and trading up is an option.
"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"
Don't know man
Next season (considering we resign Morgan and let Ginn go): Crabs, KW, Morgan. I believe we need a WR just not our top priority.
Morgan isnt better than Crabtree, and Crabtree is not a #1, so ot would be a mistake in my opinion.
"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"
In the draft, though?
The Niners have a lot of young talent at WR, and the draft is meant to get young talent. If we get Morgan back, I think the Niners should look for another WR off the waiver wire. And this time around there’s a lot more talent than Edwards.
Dobbs looked promising in the preseason
But I wouldn’t hang my hopes on him claiming he is the future Justin Smith. If we have a chance to get a premier 3-4 DE with one of our picks I say don’t hesitate.
We dont need to replace Smith next season, Dobbs had a whole season learning, gotta get a shot dirst.
We have more pressing needs. Smith has 3 years left. At least two.
"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"
That's the point
We do not need to replace him next season so if we get premier talent at the position and let him learn from Smith until he retires, then he can step in without any problem.
It really all depends on what the coaching staff thinks of Dobbs. Since we’ve only seen him in the preseason I wouldn’t rush to conclusions, but the FO might believe he is the guy.
Premier is a first rounder on a guy to sub? CB, WR, Olb, and G is a need that is higher, so I dont get your point.
"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"
Not necessarily first-round
But it’s a top-3 priority in my opinion. Why not get a starting caliber player and let him learn from the best in the biz?
Easily not a top 3 priority. CB, Olb, and Guard are higher.
"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"
I'm happy with Brooks on the other side of Aldon
I like Snyder at guard imo. I feel great at cornerback too.
Anyway, we should probably see how FA turns out before arguing over this
Haralson is not good and we only have 3 on the roster and we should have 4.
"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"
But 3 was what we decided to go with
Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.
That we likely will carry 3 next year.
Takes 2 injuries to need 4, but by that point you can plug in an ILB there and see very little difference.

I just think Id rather talk draft then watch this game...lol.
"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"
I actually like Davis as a RT
He’s had some problems but the vast majority of those problems occurred with Chilo at RG.
Davis is going to be the RT for a while
they like him and they like Boone
the OTs are set, they need to gel, upgrade RG if they can, and make sure they have their long term C set
If they can resign Rogers and Brooks and tag Goldson they can go for an offensive weapon, which I think they need.
Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson
FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder
by whistlingmountain on Jan 15, 2012 1:58 PM PST up reply actions
While I want to see Davis at RG where he can be more effective
I think they will leave him at RT like you say, although I think Boone is a much better LT than RT.
RG and C are big question marks though. While Goodwin and Snyder have been decent in pass protection neither one have been blowing anyone off the ball. If we want to be a power running team we have to be making a big bubble in the middle.
Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.
There's rumours saying that Nicks will leave the saints
If true I think we should make a play for him
Saints will try to retain him, it's an issue of money
Brees wants to get paid like Manning
Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson
FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder
by whistlingmountain on Jan 15, 2012 2:06 PM PST up reply actions
I'm sure the 49ers would be happy to pick up Colston
I don’t know about Nicks
I think the 49ers would rather continue to draft their linemen and only sign FAs to short cheap deals.
Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson
FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder
by whistlingmountain on Jan 15, 2012 2:09 PM PST up reply actions
I wouldn't
For that money I’d rather stay with Snyder. Not going to pay a guard that much.
Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.
don't we have plenty of cap space.
what’s the point of having it if you’re not going to spend it. And it’s also not like we have many holes to fill.
Spend it
But giving a guard tackle money just because it’s burning a hole in your pocket is a bit short-sighted.
Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.
Yeah it's stupid
Anthony Davis is actually a pretty good right tackle. He’s got a few weaknesses, but most everybody on the line does.
How so? Id rather play a 4th olb at ilb than vice versa.
Pass rushing technique is not easily obtained.

Lambeau must be a small field!
they crowd doesn’t seem to go above the goalposts, unlike other stadiums
I love the feeling that it doesn't matter who wins this game.
I’m confident that “offense vs. defense” win against the Saints was no fluke at all, that’s how we’ve been playing all year so bring on the Packers or the Giants.
It does make a difference though...
That we either play at home vs Giants or on the road vs Packers. So I’ll be rooting for the Giants, but other than the home-filed advantage, the opponent doesn’t matter

I don't see anything all that special about either of these teams.
The Packers can’t get to Eli, and the Giants can’t run the football.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
it must be nice having 10 seconds to throw
i swear, Alex probably gets the least amount of time to throw then all of the teams I have seen this weekend
The Saints sent more rushers than blockers for most of the game. Harbaugh and staff were getting out coached most of the game.
i'm talking about throughout the year
just watching most of the other top teams, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Manning, etc can drop back, stop, put the ball down, eat a power bar, take a swig of Gatorade, pick the ball back up and still have time to survey the field for a pass
by sanfranfanmdk on Jan 15, 2012 2:13 PM PST up reply actions
They drop everyone in coverage
Because their QBs are more respected. Alex gets blitzed cause they don’t fear him beating them with the pass.
We also
Run max protect too much. Defenses are reactive and if their key is blocking they will blitz. If you protect with 7, many teams will bring 7 — but they won’t bring them where you are blocking — and they still have a 1 man advantage in the secondary.
So many things in football are counter intuitive. You want less pressure? Open up the formation, widen the line splits, make those rushers come from further away and prevent the defense from disguising the blitz.
You want to run the ball in the middle better? Put in 4 WR and spread the defense out.
Want to line up in 2 TE 2 RB and throw the ball on max protect? Don’t be surprised when you see a 7 man blitz you can’t pickup because you couldn’t see where it was going to come from.

I don't think it's that big of a change for him
I’d take him in the 2nd, but I think he’s going to go between 20 and 40.
I’m just using him as an example though. They’ll be going for a guy that can do both and the receiving capability is the harder to find/mold.

Well
It’s more an issue of the fact that they take referees from every league, instead of getting the best refs overall. So you might have some random Ukranian refs who moonlight as referees along with the actual professional refs in the bigger leagues.

So then what is the purpose of the challenge system?
If they call it a fumble on the field, but converse and reverse it (for no apparent reason), then make it stand in the ‘actual’ challenge? Seems rather conflicting to me.
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
The officials tend to swallow their whistles on close fumble calls so as to keep from doing a Hooch mistake.
That way the defense has a chance to clearly recover it, even if the call on the field is that the runner is down. Then, no matter what the call on the field is, either team can challenge.
Of course, if the refs screw up the review, the whole thing falls apart.
Exactly. I understand how they like to let the play go, but then stick with it and let GB challenge to overturn it.
It was quite clear to me that live they thought it was a fumble, so that should be their call. But no they don’t want to make GB use another challenge, which should be completely irrelevant to the individual call being made.

Watched the game again today…there where plenty of calls that could have been called against both teams. Refs let them play for the most part

yea, I agree, they weren't calling holds
thankfully 49ers had defensive linemen capable of bull rushing
There were 2 bad calls in the game, one was overturned ( that’s the point of replay ), the other was the pass interference, which was saved by the fumble ( which Saints fans wanted an illegal hit for even though it was not a defenseless receiver or QB )

THIS IS WHY WE NEED A BIG THREAT, EXPLOSIVE WR
PART 3
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
Nicks is 6'1" 208
Both Crabs and Morgan are bigger — and Nicks isn’t a burner.
What you want is a big threat explosive offense — which you aren’t going to get as long as Alex has 2 seconds to throw or run for his life.
Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.
or some interior lineman then
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
I've said this before
Crabtree was better, bigger, faster than Nicks in every way
but Nicks has taken advantage of everything in a passing offense. Crabtree has taken advantage of nothing, in a conservative offense.
Crabtree can be that guy though, his head isn’t right most of the time. Frustrating as hell.

Crabtree is good

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
I think he turned a corner this year this year
but he still doesn’t not seem to be confident and aggressive toward the ball most of the time. The way he was in college.

FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder

Most of the regular season he was like that
Getting tough yardage, fighting through defenders.
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
He had a really good 4 game stretch around the 3Q of the season
but it took him a little while to get there and he kind of leveled off afterward
I like Crabtree, please don’t understand me, I think he was the only real WR threat on the team. But I think he can be better than Nicks, so that’s where my frustration is.
Draft: 1. Kendall Wright 2. Trumaine Johnson
FA: Smith, Morgan, Brooks, Rogers, Snyder

I’ve said he’s overrated for awhile now, but he made some great plays. The Pats defense is awful.
I think that the Ravens could take the Pats depending on how healthy their defense is. Lots of guys got nicked up this game

Happy to see someone besides us and Baltimore playing some defense. The NFL wants to be like the NBA, defense only matters in the playoffs.

“See the NFL’s best – at the Pro Bowl.”
With a picture of Rodgers.
He needs to shine in the playoffs
He’ll be a lock if he has a career that’s half as long as Ray Lewis
I’m also so excited about Bowman playing next to him. I think that tandem has the very real possibility of being one of the greatest linebacker duos of all time.
This is why I kept saying for weeks that the Packers were not as terrifying as they appeared
a decent pass rush and Rodgers turns into a mere mortal.

Donte's a pretty good tackler
when he’s not trying to get the interception.
Goldson’s an awful tackler. When he’s not going for the ball he’s got his forearms up to deliver a hit
Ok that was weird
Donte’s a good tackler when he’s not going for the INT. Goldson doesn’t even try to tackle and just lowers his shoulder to lay the wood
I really don't know about Goldson
He’s not exactly a good cover or tackling safety, but his hard hits make receivers think twice before catching the ball

Why don’t more radio guys do TV announcing? Radio guys seem much better.
radio vs. tv
Requires a different skill-set. Radio is describing the scene in great detail. TV is more about the discussion.
by David Fucillo on Jan 15, 2012 4:05 PM PST up reply actions
Objectivity vs homerism too
Radio guys are all big fans of the teams, or at least pretend that they are. TV guys have to be “objective”.
It does amuse me that the NFL uses the radio guys when showing clips on TV and on NFL.com
makes the videos more exciting
with TV the suspense is exciting enough.
I don’t know, I wouldn’t mind teams getting their own announcer team. But I guess it hurts FOX / CBS branding.
I also think that part of it
is the desire of the NFL to focus the product on it’self, rather than on any personality outside the game
some grantland piece mused that this is why players
aren’t allowed to take off their helmet after plays
I think so
emotions are still really high. In high school one time I saw a guy chase down someone to start whaling him.
That was a high school game with nothing on th eline.
The Saints' radio guy is so terrible.
He’s less exciting than Joe Buck. Listen to his call of the Graham go-ahead TD.

Their defense has been awful this year
they lost a lot of players to free agency the past couple years
another giants field goal would make it 40-20 :-)

I wonder how we hold up

I think we'll do ok against their rush
it’s a pretty standard rush. New Orleans was sending all sorts of complicated blitzes
I think we let Gore get more carries.

Hey Ninger fans the NFL has a problem
who are the officials going fix the game fo next week? They obviously did not wnat either the Niners or GMen in the CHampionship . They wanted BRees and Rodgers and the two bully teams beat them and the officails. This will be great next week, all respect for what you guys accomplished this year should be tough game. Gmen have to be flawless if they have a shot.

"in todays NFL offense wins championships"
this was scientifically proven wrong the last 2 days by san francisco and New York. Balance wins championships, no great defense or offense alone, but a balance of all sections special teams, offense and defense.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
Not in the early 90s
it’s why the 49ers broke the bank in 1994 to load up on defense and special teams. Said breaking of the bank got them in trouble with the league and cost them picks.
Done did, 49ers vs. Giants for the Champioship like it should be. You can break records offensively, score a bunch of TDs, average how many points you want, but DEFENSE wins Championships..
by HAZAD365 on Jan 15, 2012 4:54 PM PST via mobile reply actions
True
but it wasn’t a defensive win. Same with the 49ers victory. Both wins were sealed by the offense with help from the defense.
Two cmpletely balanced teams.
You sure?
I saw key defensive plays, and Rodgers did most of the damage with his feet… Only 20 points for an offense that absolutely lit up the scoreboard this season…
There were key offensive plays too
great pocket presence by Eli Manning, great throws, and a great run at the end to seal the deal. (Speaking of the Giants)
It certainly wasn’t all on the offense, but neither was it all defense. Both units played exceptionally well
Go do some more commercials, Packers. Lmao
That’s what happens. Love it.
Bring on New York.

no, i mean +3 means you’re the underdog. a favored team would be -3 (meaning you have to bet $3 to win $1 i believe)

Plus you have to remember
that the line has nothing to do with who they think will win nor by how much. It’s to entice people to bet, and a 3 point differential is attractive to lots of people.
I hope not.
Would be nice to still have that chip on their shoulders.
