49ers Vs. Giants, NFC Championship Game Odds: Rarified Air With Modest Spread
The 49ers are approximately 2 1/2 point favorites over the New York Giants and will look to continue their solid 7-0-1 run against the spread. The spread is the first time in the last ten seasons that a conference championship game favorite is favored by less than a field goal. The 49ers and Giants have some fun postseason history, with two amazing games in 1991 and 2003, so we'll see if the teams will live up to those previous results.
The folks at Bovada released a variety of odds yesterday and the 49ers and Giants are both 3/1 odds to win the Super Bowl. The Patriots lead the way at 6/5 and the Ravens are at 6/1. That is quite a bit of confidence in the Patriots offense making up for a lackluster (at best) defense. They did work against the Broncos on Saturday, but I don't think that would hold up against more complete teams. I think either the 49ers OR Giants could match up well with the Patriots. The early line has the AFC as a 2 1/2 favorite, although matchups would potentially lead to adjustments.
It is interesting to note that although the 49ers and Giants have the same odds to win the Super Bowl, the odds are at 6/5 for a 49ers-Patriots Super Bowl and 9/5 for a Giants-Patriots Super Bowl. HarBowl 2 is set at 9/2, with a Giants-Ravens matchup at 13/2.
After the jump we've got a few odds and ends as they relate to 49ers-Giants and the odds...

1991
I still remember the ’91 NFC Championship Game vividly and I was 12 at the time. It broke my heart and for the longest time I hated Roger Craig for that fumble.
I even wrote a “what if” paper in college pontificating how much history would’ve change if Montana didn’t get injured and knock out of the game. Would Craig still fumble? If Montana was healthy, would Steve Young ever get his chance and lead the Niners to the ’94 title?
You'd think it was the 49ers who went 9-7 with a regular season loss to the Giants...
based on these odds. No one is going to say it but deep down a lot of people still think the Niners are a fluke.
If the Giants win
They would be the first Super Bowl participant to have a negative point differential for the season.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
We dat team that beat them Saints!
I love how the Patriots haven't beaten anybody good this year
and beat up on a horrible Broncos team, and NOW we are supposed to believe they are the favorites to win the Superbowl lol
They have had the easiest route
As poor as their defense is ranked, the only elite QB they played was Eli (lost at home) and perhaps Big Ben (also lost). Having to beat Tebow and Flacco does make one a more sure bet than having to defeat Brees and Eli/Rodgers.

you forgot a QB...Smith :)
If Smith can perform well against the Saints D, which is ranked higher than the Pats, then he can perform against the 31st worst D

they didn't beat one team with a winning record
all of their wins came against teams that were 8-8 or worse

Does this mean their the Boise St of the NFL?
It is funny how the two conferences they played were the NFC East and AFC West where 5 of the 8 teams finished with an 8-8 record and if they had beaten the Giants they would have finished 8-8 as well.
In the world of the blind the one-eyed man is king.
Kinda reminds of unbeaten Miami
Opponents something like 36% winning record.
It's not their fault that their schedule shook out that way
Pats fans could give a crap about whether they beat a team with a winning record or not. To get to the bowl, they’ll have to beat one, and to win the bowl, they’ll have to beat one. The fact is, they are peaking at the right time, and it’s fine with them if everyone thinks, “well, it was just the Broncos”. Anyway, Niners – Pats sounds about right.
I agree
But that’s why I made tha comparison to Boise St. For years Boise has felt the deserve a shot at the championship but they don’t get a lot of respect because of who they play. All they can do is beat the teams on their schedule. Luckily we don’t have to worry about the BCS in the NFL. The Pats will get their shot and if they beat the Ravens and then beat the 49ers/Giants they deserve to be SB champions. I don’t think they will but they could.

I don't understand any of this.
I just hope we win.

2.5 points a bit strange
Since NY was a 3.5 underdog last time and lost by 7. At that time they were also playing excellent, confident ball and were coming off a huge road win. I’d have put the line at 4.

G-men are talking a lot of crap! We need to pound them into the ground.

and yes they are all talking a lot of smack.
They remind me of the Detroit Lions. Believing their own hype. Reality will set in with one crushing hit!!

usually teams with this type of thinking get their BUTTS whipped
because they lose focus and don’t try as hard because they think “we got this, easy”

What are they saying?
Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

No
They really aren’t, and it isn’t even anywhere in the same universe to how the Lions sounded.

The Niners are seriously being dissed with these odds and by everyone else......
Everyone considered the Saints the best team in the NFL. We took their BEST shot and won! And now we are not expected to be beat the Giants. I know the spread is saying we will by 2.5 but thats ridiculous as well as all the other analysts. Our defense is going to tear that Giants team apart. If we get pressure on Manning like we did Brees he will fold! And they had a much better line that the Giants. Honestly. Even if we win the Super Bowl I dont think the Niners would get any respect. And if we do get there, I sincerly hope we play the Patriots. Because with that defense we will take them apart!!! And our defense feels we can hold anybody have last week. Ok………Breathe………LOL!

Yep
Many of the same people who kept saying last week that the Saints were the best and hottest team in the NFL and would be going to the Super Bowl (whether beating GB or NY to get there) are now talking about how NY beat the best team in football. Wait; I thought the Saints were the best, playing the best, and had the hottest QB? Oh, now it’s NY that is the hottest and playing the best. Okay, whatever east coast media.

Bring on the hate!
I love it when my team gets dissed like the niners have all season, just adds more fuel to the fire! I want our niners to shock the freaking world. I could care less what other analysts and fans think at this point.
I can tell this will be a back and forth game. make sure to take your aspirin people.
Tuxedo shirts. they say i mean business, but I also like to party.
I think we will win 31-13.
With the running game giving us 2-3 TD’s. And we will stop their running game and our defense and wind at the game will stop their passing attack. I honestly do not think it will be close. Maybe for the first half. But in the second half we will break it open as well as break their spirits.

Here's to hoping on that score
As much as i REALLY want the wind to be a factor, east coast weather is pretty terrible, so it shouldn’t be totally new to them, although the stick has its own “charm” when it comes to wind factor. i dont think the game will be a blow out.

To be honest
The Niners running game hasn’t been all that great the last half of the season. Without the passing ramping up, we wouldn’t be talking here. NYG have healthy backs now, so more dangerous than earlier.
How crazy would it be
if it was SF vs NE, and the Niners won it for Joe to keep Brady from getting his 4th SB win lol
by sanfranfanmdk on Jan 17, 2012 3:07 PM PST reply actions 1 recs
Brady should just become a fan again for 1 day
and just forget he works for patriots and be a niner fan again. just intentionally ground the ball every down, run around in circles and take knees in their own end zone. Niners can set a superbowl record for only scoring safeties in a game.
Tuxedo shirts. they say i mean business, but I also like to party.
I'd much rather he play his best game
And Alex plays his… Then Brady throws another game clinching playoff interception. Alex the Great.
Gimme 1 round!

I don’t think it is wise to assume the Pats beat the Ravens. 50/50 game.
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
if that
the Ravens seem like a horrible, horrible matchup for the Pats.
1) they have a devastating pass rush and good secondary – best pass defense in the NFL
2) they play ball control but with a deep threat, so they keep the ball out of Brady’s hands AND can expose a weak secondary.
Still Belichek is a good coach and the game is in NE so that balances it out a bit.
[Poorly Wrought THING] is what Brian Sabean would have made if he were a [THING-maker] instead of a MLB GM
I think
even the Saints would have slaughtered GB @ Lambeau this past weekend; but if pundits want to go against us again this Sunday, so be it…probably has a lot to do w/our ‘lack of playoff experience’
When your franchise has been as terrible as our Niners have & then suddenly turn it around on the coattails of a revamped coaching staff, combined w/no offseason, do you really expect the sentiment to change overnight??
