49ers to Make It Rain
It's only Wednesday, but a big recently developing sub-plot to the 49ers-Giants contest Sunday is the weather. The San Francisco Bay Area is expected to have rain Thursday through Tuesday, with showers present during the game on Sunday. A field that has already proven to be a factor against pass-heavy offenses will be extra soggy for the visiting Giants.
Even New York has admitted the challenge the expected weather could present for the Giants passing game in this recent Post article. The 49ers ability to take away the run, and the weather's ability to take away the pass could bode well for San Francisco. The Niners are known as a ground-and-pound team anyway, with multiple heavy formations -- they love to run the ball.
In addition to the 49ers offense, their want to throw high percentage passes and not depend on 50-yard passes down field is a more plausible strategy in the rain. It's going to be an interesting game; and this rain could help produce another instant classic like the one we saw in the Divisional Round.

Just remember hearing...
Cris Collinsworth talking last night on the NFL Network about how rain and a soggy field would “slow down the Niners’ pass rush and give Eli more time to make throws”.
Which, of course, conveniently ignores any effect it might have on Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz or Mario Manningham, right?
Nice to hear that someone thinks a soggy, muddy field might also have an effect on the visiting team as well.
At the same time, it could cause some of our DB's to slip and fall down as well.

I was actually thinking about this for the Giants
From what I recall the Giants were breaking pretty hard on the WR/TE’s routes last time we played. We’re not known for chucking it deep so it’s understandable, but you throw in a double move on a slippery field with a DB trying to jump routes…..could be some easy points to be made.

I might take such a comment seriously...
But it came from Collinsworth who if you recall along with his QB Ken Anderson were denied a Super Bowl ring by what team? Don’t be surprised if you hear all week Collinsworth’s annoying and ridiculous opinions ironically and subtley against Niners.
Giants play on turf
No turf cuts against the Niners. We play on this field and know how to cut and it may be the biggest difference in the game.
Giants 2-2 on grass, 7-5 on turf during regular season
4-4 home, 4-4 away.
2-2 on grass at the very least means they don’t have much recent experience on it. Then, factor in the weather…
So, Peyton Manning is retiring?
Good decision. He had three neck surgeries.

Just saw the front page of NFL.com suggesting the Packers improve their defense by
improving their running game.
As opposed to, you know, just improving your defense.
I don't get that
Rodgers is good. He rarely misses and keeps the clock moving. The only difference between him and the running game is that the running game gets less yards. Also, apparently Packer fans want Woodson to be a safety instead of a corner. Guess their safeties really suck.

Don't know how much rain will play a factor
Given most systems roll through the bay area in 3 hours and usually it takes 4-6 for the next wave to hit there is a good chance it rains Sunday but not during the game. I’d expect overcast, maybe a little rain and wouldn’t be shocked if it were sunny with the storm hitting earlier in the morning or later in the evening.
Niners better not get caught up worring about the weather, they just need to do what they have been doing. Stay focused, remember what’s at hand and worry about the Giants. Coach harbaugh will have them ready I believe.

As if we needed more incentive...
The Mayors’ Bets…
If the hometeam 49ers win the game, New York City will be home to “49ers Street” as the Mayor will rename 49th Street in Manhattan. New York bagels will also be sent to the Mayor’s office.
However, if the Giants emerge as victors, San Franciscans will be home to more blue than red, as the city’s cable cars would be draped in New York Giants flags
This IS NOT happening.

Bulletin Board Material
"Just like Hakeem Nicks ran right past the Packers’ secondary, the Giants are going to breeze by the 49ers on their way to the Super Bowl," said Mayor Bloomberg. "After Sunday, Niners fans will be left with a taste as sour as their famous bread, and the Giants will have their sights set on another trophy."
"49ers fever is sweeping our City and the entire Bay Area region, and we are so proud of our hometown team," said Mayor Lee. "So while I’m excited to make this bet with Mayor Bloomberg, we have no intention of losing. We’re going all the way to the Super Bowl. The Giants will have to leave their hearts and their Super Bowl hopes in San Francisco. Go Niners!"

So, too, will the NYGiants get knocked out of the playoffs by the San Francisco 49ers!
