49ers Vs. Giants: Mayors Place Bet On NFC Championship Game
As is often the case for big games, the mayors of San Francisco and New York came up with a friendly wager for Sunday. If the 49ers win, New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg will rename 49th Street in Manhattan 49ers Street. Additionally, he will send a dozen New York bagels from Bagel Oasis In Queens. If the Giants win, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee will deck out a cable car in blue and red with Giants flags for a day along Powell Street. Additionally, he will send Boudin sourdough bread.
It was amusing to note that initial bet negotiations included renaming New York City as Jed York City. I'm not surprised that one didn't quite work out, although that would have been a pretty sweet bet. I'm not sure what San Francisco could be renamed to accommodate that.
For the coming week, San Francisco's City Hall and Coit Tower are lit up in red and gold.

Re-naming the city would have been awesome...
But yeah, I think that’s a bit of a bigger change than any mayor’s willing to wager. I’ll take “49ers Street” with a big smile :)

Yeah...
That would probably be a logistical nightmare, even for one day.

yeah well...
people can just go to NY and put 49ers bumper stickers on the street signs like they did on Bush St. after the election…
At USC we're not snobs, we're just better than you.
Jed York City
lol. That would have been hilarious…I’d pay money just to hear an airline say, “Attention, last boarding call for Jed York City @ gate B-53”
well; when jed york boards his own private jet; i would imagine they always say that

Totally off topic....
But we need to give our defense a name. I thinks thats whats stopping it from being with the likes of the purple people eaters and steel curtain!! Once they have a name they can be compared with the greats. Red Dawn anybody???
As usual, no respect
Bunch of analysts on ESPN talking about how the Giants defense is going to dominate the 49ers offense. Hooey. Did they dominate them the first time around? No. I don’t see why anything would change on that score.
More than anything, it pisses me off that the 49er defense is not given as much cred as the Giants defense when it’s been the Giants defense that has been torched nearly all year. I suppose a lot of that comes from how the Giants were able to shut down the Packers offense, but why exactly did they win that game? They won because of forcing key turnovers and because the Packers dropped a bunch of passes (and let’s not even talk about that Ole Defense on the Hail Mary by the Giants at the end of the first half).
Contrast that with the Niners defense, which contained the Saints for the majority of the game before failing late. I guess those two late-game failures have really opened up the 49ers defense to not be taken as seriously as they once were, but they really controlled the Saints for the majority of the game. And it wasn’t because the Saints were dropping passes, it was because the 49ers were getting to the QB, shutting down the run and getting solid coverage on the back-end (many times Brees had to wait and wait for receivers to get open).
Yes, the 49ers eventually gave up 30 points, but I call that a win against that explosive Saints offense. That might be the best offense in football, IMO. And certainly their corps of receivers is superior to the Giants. The Giants, meanwhile, got embarrassed by that very same Saints offense.
I expect it to be a tough, edge-of-your-seat battle, but I think our defense is the best in the league and I think we will take the ball away from Eli enough to pull out a win. Say 23-21. Maybe then we’ll get some respect.
The Giants will be seeing RED on sunday!!
RED DAWN baby!!
so what!
This whole year has been the 9ers in the shadow! I love it! We always come out on top screaming WHO’S GOT IT BETTER?! Let em talk let em ignore 9ers got this.

I'm up for some back-and-forth, tommy
And let me be clear that I’m not disrespecting the Giants. They’re obviously a very good team and were always my pick to win the NFC East. I also picked them over both the Falcons and the Packers.
I just think the 49ers D isn’t getting nearly enough credit and I think that stems from the fact that Brees threw on them for 400+ yards. All well and good, but the D held them long enough during most of the game while the 49ers offense was struggling. The Saints are too good to ever shut down and they have such awesome weapons that they were able to pop two big ones on the 49ers late, but if it hadn’t of been for the 3 turnovers the D created and their ability to hold down the Saints for most of the game, it very well could’ve been a blowout for the Saints.
Just lookin’ for some R-E-S-P-E-C-T for my boyz!
But the 49ers do get respect.
Just because someone doesn’t pick us to win or whatever doesn’t mean that they’re disrespecting us.
"It might be time to give Alex some credit, huh?" - Harbaugh
The preponderance of attention
seems to be on the Giants D-Line though. As if nobody else is even playing in the game.
The 49ers do get some respect, but it seems like the Giants are getting more. Maybe it’s just East Coast media bias or the fact that the Giants did this before in 2007 or that they beat the #1 seed on their field… but the tide of opinion seems to be with the Giants.
But you’re right: screw ‘em! Let’s just win and the listen to the excuses.

I think alot of you guys
must be reading opinions somewhere other than the SB Nation sites. I have to keep that in mind when I read some of the comments from Niner fans about their team not getting respect and/or talking about Giant fans who think it will be a blowout.
I don’t go on any other sites, and here and BBV I have seen nothing but GREAT football talk and mutual respect. I also have seen plenty of respect in the media.
That’s all I have for the moment…

CBS: 5/5 analysts picked the Giants.
ESPN: 6/8 analysts picked the Giants.
NFL.com: 3/4 analysts picked the GIants.
On SI.com, I’ve read two or three articles on the game, all picking the Giants to win, although I couldn’t find a comprehensive list. The Niners should be the favorites in this game. They are not. The story is the Giants, the Giants, the Giants. I am definitely looking forward to the royal beatdown I hope the Niners put on them.
Lots of these experts picked the Saints too

If this game was played in East Rutherford, New Jersey, I would predict a close battle between two very solid teams.
But with this game on our home turf, I can’t give the Giants the credit they so desperately want. If I thought the Packers were as good of a team as the Giants saw them to be, I might think – hey the Giants might be the best team in the NFL. They just really dismantled the Packers.
I do believe the Giants are a better team than the Packers, don’t get me wrong. But I never thought the Packers were the best team in the NFL. We all know now why it’s so important to have an elite defense. Sometimes even the most high powered offense is going to have a bad day. If your defense can’t pick up the slack, you’re done.
The Giants defense can pick up the slack, but the 49ers defense goes above and beyond picking up the slack. I don’t even think the Giants will get close to us in Candlestick. The Giants have to respect Alex Smith or they’re getting burned on our home turf. Alex has scored 12 of his 17 touchdowns at home. I don’t think the Giants have ever come to respect Alex, and if they have, I get the feeling it’s only with their words. This is why I think the Giants are going to get burned.

Somehow, despite the Niners continued success and much better season, we are still the underdogs according to many analysts.
The fact that the Niners winning this may surprise some people shows true East Coast bias in the media. I’m loving it, personally, even though it bugs me: keeps the pressure on the Giants, and allows us to shock the world again. I personally would be very surprised if the Giants beat us on Sunday. And anyone who watched the Saints game should agree: the Saints played WORLDS better than the Packers did.
by Rhombus on Jan 19, 2012 4:03 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
Here's why
For most of the year, the Giants ran a Tampa 2(ish) zone about 80% of the time, the thinking being that after losing Terrell Thomas to injury for the season, the Giants did not have the talent to play man coverage. After surrendering an average of something like 60 points a game and getting torched by surefire hall of fame quarterback Rex Grossman for the second time this season, someone on the Giants staff finally realized this might not be the best strategy. Since that time the, Giants have played zone about 20% percent of the time, and have yielded 14, 14, 0, and 20 points to the Jets, Cowboys, Falcons and Packers. Yes, key players (Osi/Boley) getting healthy didn’t hurt, but, IMO, the wholesale change in philosophy was the key to the Giants defensive turnaround. So when talking heads keep saying "this is a different Giant defense than they faced in the first meeting", it literally is a different defense in a sense.
Before the change, the Giants sieve gave up 34 points to the Cowboys. Three weeks later, they shut them down, only really struggling when they inexplicably went back to their zoney ways in the 3rd quarter. The Pack went from 38 in the first meeting, to 20 in the second.
And while you can write off the Giants success against the Packers last week as the result of uncharacteristic fumbles and drops, that doesn’t explain their success against the Cowboys and Falcons. While neither of those teams offenses compare to Green Bay’s, they’re still pretty damn potent, and I think most would say superior to the 49ers. It’s a small sample size to go on, but I believe this is why most "experts" think the Giants should have more success containing the 49ers this go around.

I work in midtown Manhattan. When the Niners win on Sunday, I will be sure to take pictures of the sign and post them on here (If someone explains how I post pix).
And, by the way, living in New Jersey and working in NYC has been HELL this week…..
Go Niners!!!
Which will only make the next few weeks even better.
Don’t worry, the annoyance is fleeting. He who laughs last laughs best!
I don’t think Jed York’s getting his name mentioned by any mayor as long as the Santa Clara move is going ahead.
Hah, yeah, seriously!
Win or lose, at the end of the day I'm just happy to see the Niners play well... Okay, winning is good. I prefer winning.

I think this game is going to be a blowout. You heard it here first.
One way or the other.
There’s an off chance, as I’ve mentioned before, that the Niners lost the chip on their shoulder after the Saints game, in which case they could lose big.
I think there’s a much greater chance, though that the Giants are riding high on BS East Coast media hype without the depth of talent to back it up. The same hype that we saw last game. You can’t rest your entire defense on the four men up front. On the other side of the ball, the Giants don’t have a real running game, but we also shouldn’t have that much difficulty covering their receivers.
For the Niners’ offense, in the mud and against a lighter, faster D-line, the Niners could keep the Giants defense off balance with scheming and end up with a lot of rushing yardage.
Finally, I don’t think Alex Smith is finished doing what he wants to do. I hope his receivers got the wake-up-call they needed from this last game- they need to execute. Alex is ready to get them the ball, but they need to freaking catch it. I think they will.
If they really want to win, the Niners could win this game by multiple touchdowns.
There are several things wrong here,
but the only one I want to mention is that NO wasn’t all hype. They made it to the divisional round of the playoffs and took your game right down to the wire. Outside of their cozy dome.
Show some respect for your opponent.

Well then I'll just disagree with TO's and yours opinion and call it bitter.
The week leading up to the Giant GB game the Packer fans thought it was a joke that we even thought the Giants would keep it close.
I will not now be delusional in my opinion of a team my boys just blew out, despite the disrespect.
You not getting respect from NO fans doesn’t change the fact that the Saints were a very good team.

No- New Orleans certainly wasn't hype. That was not hype at ALL.
New Orleans was the best offense in football. And the 49ers beat them. That was QUITE a formidable opponent. The next day, the Giants beat a Packers team that acted like they had no idea where they were. The Packers didn’t even show up, and the media takeaway is what? The Giants will beat the Niners.
The “last game” I was talking about was the Niner’s last game against the GIANTS, where we heard EXACTLY THE SAME STUFF coming out of the East Coast media in framing the game.
Apparently, the entire game comes down to the Giants’ defensive line. That’s all that matters- just like last time! Not the 49ers’ Pro-Bowl/All-Pro linebackers and secondary. Not the 49ers DROY OLB pass rusher Aldon Smith. Not the 49ers’ own D-line Pro-Bowler, Justin Smith. I’ve even heard that the NINER’S D-line is going to have a LOT more trouble getting to Eli because of the muddy field, with no mention of the Giants’ D-line at all, even though that’s the Giants’ entire defense. Hilarious.
So don’t give me this “respect your opponent” BS when you’ve got 80% of these East Coast media clowns picking AGAINST the MORE TALENTED, MUCH BETTER RECORD, HOME team, because they happen to live in NY.
Respect your opponent. Damned right. Rolle coming and acting like he is, living on easy wins and hype. Giants are going to have quite the rude awakening come Sunday.

The Giants and Saints are overrated?
Nah.
"It might be time to give Alex some credit, huh?" - Harbaugh
I agree with this, even though I don't usually talk down other teams.
This Giants team went 9-7 in the regular season. They’ve had two good wins against good teams in the last two weeks, but no one can argue that Green Bay suffered an unforced meltdown in many areas of the game, particularly dropped passes. The Niners, on the other hand, took on a team at the top of their game, far better than the Giants, and laid a beatdown on them. It was close, but the Niners played toe to toe and just BEAT them. I would expect no less this game.
I do think the importance of offense over defense was overhyped before the Saints and Packers
lost, but, the Saints talent on the offensive side of the ball was far from overstated. The only thing that kept them from scoring every time they touched the ball was an amazing job by the Niners’ D.
Which is exactly why defense matters as much as it does.
Where's the Beef?
How can these mayors bet? Thought the government was out of money- We’re broke as a joke right. Then they will tell you that the bets come out of their pockets right. Probably more like removed from the coffer fund.

There are some good wideouts in FA
Steve Johnson, Dwayne Bowe, DeSean Jackson, etc. Still, I think it would be better for us to focus on re-signing Alex and Carlos and get a WR like Alshon Jeffery, Kendall Wright, or Mohammed Sanu in the draft.

Would love to get DeSean Jackson.
His catch rate increased by almost 10% from last season to this one, and he hasn’t gotten any slower. Especially if we end up letting Ted Ginn go, I want Jackson.
While I like Stevie Johnson, I don’t think he adds much physically or talent-wise over Crabtree or Morgan. A true deep threat and speed threat like Jackson would do wonders for the Niners offense, and I’d love for Smith to have a chance to show off his greatly underrated deep ball.
If its a blowout
My nerves will be thankful. The last game was such a anxiety filled 1
Who has it better than us?
DeSean may be interesting...
Not sure how much more time Ginn has. Seeing as DeSean is from Cal, he may be a good option, though Harbaugh would have to do some tough grillin’. I see DeSean is a younger TO right now… A bit acidic. I am not sure the Niners should go for an older vet though.
