49ers Vs. Giants: Happy Hour With Harbaugh, Fangio, Roman And Smith

The 49ers will hold four press conferences today as they get ready for Sunday's game against the New York Giants. Head coach Jim Harbaugh will once again be available and he will be followed by DC Vic Fangio, OC Greg Roman and DE Justin Smith.

I think Justin Smith will be the most informative of the four, as he can break down the opposing team pretty well. Whatever the case, if you are looking for some mid-day entertainment, I've posted a live stream after the jump. It begins at approximately 11:50am PT. It will be available via the stream after the jump, or at 49ers.com or CSNBayArea.com.

I think the most interesting story line of the week...

for me anyway, is the fact that Chryst called the plays during the 2:00 minute drill against the Saints. Is Roman expendable?

Matt Cain is better than you, but apparently not cool enough for Showtime.

by homegrowntalent on Jan 19, 2012 12:10 PM PST reply actions

I don't look at it that way...

To me, football is just as much of a team sport from the coaching aspect as it is from the playing aspect. I love the fact that there’s no ego coming from the brain-trust in play calling.

It's a nice change of pace.

Instead of no one on the coaching staff that can call a decent play, like during the Nowin and Singletary eras; now we have multiple people who can call game-winning plays.
How the tables have turned.

Matt Cain is better than you, but apparently not cool enough for Showtime.

I wonder if that helps vs. opponent film study

Like, other teams have a hard time getting a good grasp on the playcalling?

who called the bootleg run? absolutely genius…

by KGboomer on Jan 19, 2012 12:36 PM PST up reply actions

I know I'm a bit late on this

but that was Roman and it was genius. My neighbor was over watching the game with us and right before that play he said. “I would call a bootleg right here.” True story.

This is a coaching team

It’s not a competition. These guys have been working together quite a while. Harbaugh is not a dictator like Sing or Nolan or most HCs. Harbaugh takes credit for nothing and he can change the call at any time, as can Alex. This really isn’t about individual credit or narcissistic need. That’s why and how it works. One guy suggests one call or series of calls and they all have input. The players have bought into this as well, they are all about he team, and winning.

Hello!

My account has finally been activated, so I wanted to say hello to all the 49ers fans here.
I have a Russian background (as you can probably tell by my username…), so I was never into football, but the Niners’ recent success has forced me to start exploring the world of football. While I am still mostly clueless, I understand a little bit about the sport, and I managed to watch some of the game vs. the Saints and understand a little bit of what was going on.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself. I am a college student (freshman doing Pre-med/Neuroscience & Behavioral Biology major) in Georgia, but I grew up in the Bay Area. I am a huge Sharks fan, and I follow the SF Giants somewhat. And now…I am hoping to start following the 49ers a bit more.

I would really appreciate if you guys “prepared” (I think that’s the appropriate word to use?) me a little better for the game this weekend. Please let me know what I should read up on or just throw out some stuff that I should know/remember for the game.

Thanks so much in advance guys!

Sincerely,
-Dmitriy

Just start reading through the articles posted here

Fooch and all the other Niners Nation writers post some great information all throughout the day, every day. It’s a great way to get caught up for the game this Sunday. Major kudos to them for being so on top of things and keeping all of us informed.

Howdy

It also wouldn’t hurt to jon Big Blue View. It’s the Giants team version of this kind of blog. Other fans post/follow/study/obsess about their teams just as much as we do, and it is sometimes neat to get a viewpoint from what the other teams’ fans are seeing about our team.

Welcome to the boards!

I hope you discover what a great sport football is and there is no better place to do that than here.

Also, great choice with the Niners!

Thanks! Could you do me a huge favor?

Is there an article/fanpost/fanshot here that quickly goes through the basics of football, the 49ers players, etc.?

FTF has this big post in the archives that sums up everything you need to know about hockey for newbie fans.

I am a newbie football fan, so does that exist at Niners Nation?

Thanks again!

Go Sharks!

by Dmitriy on Jan 19, 2012 12:24 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know of anything like that at Niners Nation, unfortunately

I hate to send you off to a wikipedia article, but it does give you all the basics. Until you have somebody sit down and say, “these are the rules of football” I think the sport is kinda hard to get into. Once you’ve got that, though, you’ll be absolutely hooked. That’s what happened to me!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football

And you can always make a fanpost and ask anybody here if you’ve got questions, I’ve learned a lot from reading other people’s comments too.

I don't think so....

lesson 1. Defense.

Our defensive front is like a line comprised of Franzen, Thornton, and Lupul. Power forwards who attack with the hope of drawing physical double teams.
Willis and Bowman would be like Lidstrom paired with Sergei Zubov. Skilled guys who are very very fundamentally sound.
Having an OLB like Aldon Smith is like having a solid shot from the point. When the puck gets to Boyle up top, he’s gonna let it rip. Likewise, when the Niners defense sees a pass play coming, Aldon is able to tee off on the quarterback.
Defensive secondary is a unit within itself. Almost like a PK unit. You want to have a group of guys that understand spacing, angles, and play with speed. Your PK can not overcompensate or else they get out of position. In the defensive secondary, players are held accountable to the unit by being in the right place and knowing when the other guy is playing in a zone or against a man.

oh geez…i now know that i can go on alll day. i really love hockey, so it’s easy to make parallels, but it’s also over-simplifying the game a bit. let me know if this helps or makes you more confused!

by t p on Jan 19, 2012 12:56 PM PST up reply actions

but before I try to understand that even more...I will read up on the links posted above...

they’re a bit more basic – this is a bit more advanced. Thanks so much though.

Welcome

this may sound silly but if you can get a football video game and just play for a while. I don’t know if that will work but it may help you understand what is going on.

And as with everything just dive into the all mighty google. If you hear a term you don’t understand google it and see where it leads you.

I have a hard tome remembering which wide receiver is the flanker. So I looked that up the other day and that led me to look up several things going all the way back to the invention of the forward pass. When I start looking into this type of thing I really end up enjoying what I learn.

But if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Can you imagine a little kid just standing there and getting picked on. They get rocks thrown at them. Spit on them. Alex’s just one of those guys, he’s been there. I just wish him all the best. I want to see him successful. I just want to see all good things happen to that guy. Because he is a warrior.-VD

Privyet Dmitriy, and dobro pozhalovat to NN.

Since I’m from Germany, I have had the problem/pleasure of introducing “outsiders” to American football quite a couple of times. What I found out is: You can talk and explain all you want, but there is nothing like having somebody actually watch the game with a knowledgable person at his side.

What I would suggest is the following: Go to a place that has the AFC Championship Game on TV. Find somebody who’s following the game. Preferrably not somebody who is a fan of the Ravens or Patriots – they might be too caught up in the action.

Maybe you can find somebody with a Bulldogs hat or a Falcons jersey – those are the types of people I would look for. If you can find a guy who’s there with his wife or girlfriend – great. They will be helpful because they don’t want to look like a [site decorum] in front of their girl. Explain your situation and ask them if it’s okay if you have some questions during the game. After going through the AFC game that way, you should be well equipped to watch and enjoy the 49ers.

And have fun as a Niners fan – it’s a great time to be one, that’s for sure.

They had set that play up perfectly

If your the Saints your blitzing the weakest part of the line which is the right side. Perfect play call for the situation being 3rd and 8 especially when they had nobody in the backfield.

I'm just going by what Roman said.

Clearly, he made the same assumption of where they would blitz as you did. But he did qualify it as a 50-50 proposition, noting that if the Saints had been overload blitzing to the other side it would have been snuffed out quickly.
