Alex Smith - John Clayton's QB Ranking 2010
I remember reading this at the time and thinking "Clayton is just another ignorant east coast fool not looking at the whole picture..."
What's your chance of Alex being elite now, Clayton?

To look at John Clayton
it appears the only “sport” he could play is foosball.
It's a ranking from last season based on his previous body of work....
Everything at the time said that he wouldn’t be elite, and would likely not even be a starter in 2011. Harbaugh came in and took care of him and put him in a position to produce and succeed, but to say he will be “elite” after this season is a stretch. Saying he can win you games with some clutch 4th qtr performances is about right, and with Harbs on board, his “percentage” of becoming elite has definitely taken a jump.
I also don’t agree with Clayton’s basis for calling a QB elite. Based on his criteria, Cam Newton and Andy Dalton are borderline elite already and will be “elite” by next season’s end.
You should know that John Clayton is based in Seattle.
He has watched plenty of Alex Smith games in the last number of years. He was speaking from what he’s seen. Very few people expected Alex to make the plays he made last weekend, and those that did were most certainly wearing 49ers-colored glasses. Can’t blame Clayton for not having his own pair.
So far, 2011 has been Harbaugh-some!
