Given the vagueries of a Sunday New Years Day, the New Years Day bowls are all going down today, January 2. Houston-Penn State, Florida-Ohio State, South Carolina-Nebraska and Georgia-Michigan State have all begun. Oregon and Wisconsin will kick off the Rose Bowl at 2:00pm and the Stanford-Oklahoma State Fiesta Bowl gets going at 5:00pm.
Since the 49ers are actually in the playoffs this year (still a little stunned at times about this!), our bowl coverage is taking a step back for real, actual NFL coverage. I'll moved this to the front page at least for the Fiesta Bowl and possibly also for the Rose Bowl.
The Fiesta Bowl could prove to be the best bowl game of the day and one of the better ones of the entire bowl season. Stanford and Oklahoma State feature two extremely prolific passing offenses with defenses that are questionable. If Andrew Luck was looking for an opportunity to show off his passing skills in advance of the 2012 NFL Draft, this is a pretty solid option to do so.
The Rose Bowl will be an intriguing battle of dominant rushing attacks. While the Ducks bring all sorts of athleticism to the table, their rush defense is a little questionable, which could be the key to the Badgers sticking around in this one. Russell Wilson is a solid quarterback, but it will be interesting to see what he can do if Oregon's quick strike offense gets a sizable early lead.
