Packers coach says tragedy won’t affect playoff game Giants Blog

Why is 800lb gorilla in the room being ignored by the national sports media??? The Giants went into Lambeau Field and beat the 15 and 1 Packers. It was a deserved win, but they definitely caught the Packers on a down slide. Aaron Rodgers didn't play at ALL in their final game. Flynn their back up QB had a PHENOMENAL game and sucked all the air out of the room. They went into their bi-week like all the other top seeds and the week before the game Coach Philbin's son goes missing. Next, they learn the tragic news that he's been found dead.

Now, I don't know about you, but any death in my family or circle of friends affects me. I don't care what Coach McCarthy said during that press conference IT AFFECTED the team. It obviously affected him, so his denial was meaningless. Even if it was just say 10% it affected them where they needed to be at 100% to beat the Giants. Don't believe, look at all the dropped passes by the Packer receivers. It had nothing to do with the Giants making great defensive plays.

The Packer's lost FOCUS. Add on top of that the rust from the bi and Rodgers not playing in the last game, this tragedy and... you have the once most FEARED team in the NFL getting beat by an OPPORTUNISTIC New York Giants. (I put the New York in there just in case Vice-President Biden reads this.)

The east coast sports media, New York Giant fans and the New York Giants are going to learn the hard way that the San Francisco Forty Niners aren't some poor schmoes that lucked themselves into the number 2 seed. They had a huge confidence boosting game against a very deadly New Orlean Saints and they are hungry, focused and ready to take out any team that gets in their way of the prize... and that's getting to and winning the Super Bowl.

Go NINERS!!!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Niners Nation's writers or editors.

Really???

It’s obviously an inherent inability to access what really happened in Packers/Giants. Something it seems you’re infected with yourself…

To be honest, I don't care how other people look at the Giants/Packers game. You could call it a fluke if you wanted to

and I wouldn’t care. But do you believe that Giants fans wouldn’t be beating their chests after defeating a 15-1 team in their own stadium? Especially after the fact that the score should have been 37-6 and the refs robbed us on those two calls that led to TDs?

I ain’t here to start anything, obviously, and I respect whatever your opinion is on the matter. I just find it surprising that you are shocked that Giants fans are confident. And by the way, this same Coach Philbin, who’s professional life was so severely affected by his personal life, interviewed just days after the game for the Miami HC job, and won it.

LOL!!!

I’m not calling it a fluke. I respect what the G-Men did. Now, isn’t the time to feel sorry for another team or person. They made the most of what was given to them.

And I’m not surprised Giant’s fans confident, why wouldn’t they??? But they are the first ones to blather about the Niners being in a weak division, blah blah, WE HAD INJURIES in the first game. So it’s OK to excuse away a LOSS because of injuries, but it’s not OK to put forth a plausible explanation that the Packer’s weren’t focused because of TRAGIC death of Philbin’s son.

The fact that everybody wants to fact injuries in, but the DEATH wasn’t even touched.

Thanks

Just a clarification I’m not discounting the Giants accomplishments, any team that made it to the NFC championship, because more often not they deserved it.

It just seems to me that certain people want to belittle the Niners as if “you’re a fluke, you don’t belong on the same field as us.” They don’t have to TEAR the Niners down to bring themselves up.

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Hold on there, pardner! I’ll grant you the Giants are very confident, but their so-called predictions of victory are just the media asking them leading questions that they can’t really answer any other way. I think the teams have both avoided any real trash talk and genuinely respect each other.

I’ll grant you the media seem to want the Giants to win to set up a Superbowl rematch against someone. It’s not anyone’s fault that the largest media organizations are headquartered in NYC.

But I take exception to the possible knock on Giants fans — from what I’ve seen here and on Big Blue View, we Giants fans and you Niners fans have had a wide-ranging and generally polite discussion of the game (thanks David & Ed, especially). Sure, we both talk up our teams (when speaking ‘in-house’) but I haven’t seen and Giant fan overconfidence or real trash talk.

Tend to agree with you on the ‘800-lb gorilla’ that no one seems to talk about . . .

were you in the Packers locker room before or after the game?

unless you were, then I don’t think you have any room to comment on how much or little that young man’s death affected the team.

Did you read the article???

Aaron Rodger’s said HE’S HAVING trouble with the situation. You know the guy throwing the ball. How much did that play into the PREPARATION leading up to the game. Nobody in the national media explained the DROPPED passes that infected the Packer’s wide receivers. Can YOU???

I’m giving a PLAUSIBLE explanation as to why that might have been, BECAUSE it sure wasn’t the VAUNTED Giant’s Defense that caused them to drop them.

by ESSJPeteDawg on Jan 21, 2012 10:41 AM PST reply actions

Of course the death of his son affected the team.

But are you really using that as the only reason why they lost?

You don’t think it could’ve been that the Giants are actually a good team? Or maybe it was because the Packers were overrated and don’t know how to tackle on defense?

It’s not like the Packers blew out the Giants when they faced in the regular season. No, that game came down to a last-second field goal.

My only issue is the East-coast media bias

Have no issue with G-men fans or their team. They’ve earned their way here, and talking up your team is almost a requirement of being a fan. :-)

Now the media. My prediction is this: after we win the superbowl (hey, I’m a fan so I’m talking up my team!) you still going to hear from them “buh…buh… THEY GOT LUCKY!” or “The other team was hurt/injured/distracted/whatever” not "Hey! Maybe the Niners are a good team after all!

I haven't heard any excuses about beating NO.

Not even close. All about how Smith lead the offense on two game winning drives and a tough defense who took the ball away 5 times.

What have you heard?

And BTW, we are still dealing with being called lucky for the 2007 championship so I can relate if what you say is accurate.

whoever is saying that the Giants got lucky in the SB is truly delusional

I’m sure most are trying to base it off that catch by Tyree, which we all have to admit is a 1 in a million catch. But just because he made that one catch isn’t the only reason the Giants won that game, they played their {site decorum}’s off which is what they are expected to do in a game like that.

by Chaotic9erFan on Jan 21, 2012 12:46 PM PST up reply actions

That's just sour grapes. The Giants just flat out matched up well with them that year.

If you can get after Brady you can beat them, much like the Packers this year with Rodgers. It’s no coincidence the two games the Packers lost this year were against defenses with premier edge rushers (Tamba Hali, JPP). The Giants most definitely earned and deserved that SB win.

Both actually

Actually it’s more of a paraphrase, but in a nutshell last night on NFL Network (either TA or NFL Live). But he said basically the ’niners cannot depend on Alex Smith to win like he did against NO consistantly, eventhough he AND the TEAM have been doing that sort of thing (of course not to that extent) all season long.

Did I write that's the only reason the Packers lost???

No, I didn’t. I find it startling that it wasn’t even put forth as one of the reasons they lost.

Finally, you JUST SWERVED into making my point for me. The Packer’s had to be at the TOP of their game to BEAT the Giants by just a FIELD GOAL. So before the game did they have a bye? Did Flynn play the game and threw 6 touchdowns? Breaking a NFL and having the national media say look how great the Packers are, they just had their back up the playoff bound Lions. Words of honey that can LULL a team that needs to be hungry. Did Aaron Rodgers take a game off before they played? Did a tragic death hit the team???

The Packers were at their BEST then. They weren’t last week, FOR MANY REASONS.

ONLY reason, no, you didn’t write that, but that’s your whole article so what else are we supposed to think when yopu speak of an “800 pound gorilla.”

800 pounds of gorilla sounds like a pretty big reason to me.

And the reason no one (media) is talking about it, IMO, is because they don’t think it is appropriate to drag the man’s family through the hell that talking about their sons death in public for the whole world to hear would be. For losing a STINKING GAME.

You got kids? I do, and I understand why it’s not being talked about by ADULTS who work in the media.

WTH???

How does honestly stating that a tragic death of young person puts a person’s a person thru hell? I respect Aaron Rodgers, because he was honest enough to say that he was having a problem with it. It’s why I think the dropped passes were more the WR’s fault and not his. Just an opinion….

we are talking about the fact that

the media isn’t talking about it as being a factor for the Pack losing, because the last thing Philbin and his family need is for the national media to be talking about how his son’s death caused the Packers to lose a freaking game.

So you do agree with me… The reason they didn’t factor Philbin’s sons death into the Packers poor performance is to save the family the supposed hurt caused by such a discussion. And not because the assertion isn’t plausible. All you had to say is that you agree with me… hehehehe

I do think it had an affect on the team, how little or how much is debatable, but for once the media did the respectable thing and left that discussion out of it.

That the media did the right thing, for whatever reason. I’m just glad they did.

And there is no doubt in my mind it had to affect the preparation that week. As far as gameday performance? We will never know the extent of it, but preparation during the week often has something to do with Sunday performance

Agree and disagree about the media on the death within the organization

The media has shown in the past how much it affects the teams when tragedy strikes like this (I.e. HWSNBN’s fathers passing prior to a MNF game). Of course it can swing both ways for teams and the media a lot of times either use it as a glorifyimg point or an excuse. The Packers have done a good job of not doing either in this case, though IMO.
A team should be able to overcome this to play the game no matter what. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t, but I wouldn’t try to bring it as a main selling point to a success or failure in a game. Not saying ESSJ’s main point was that, but it’s the medias job to try to bring some sort of ‘heart strings’ story so everybody says “awwwww” and it looks like the Packers are not trying to ride that train.

by Chaotic9erFan on Jan 21, 2012 12:33 PM PST reply actions

I will tar Giants fans all I want.

I have ran into many and there clowns. I watched all the games this year (I have a cool job that allows me too watch them). Yes the Giants got lucky that the Packers didn’t come to play. Hands down and simple to see.

Giants are not the same team they were years ago. Giants have skated by and will see there demise unless like the packers the niners dont come to play. Watch a few of your away games again and take notice. Again to say you are a favorite over a 13-3 team with the best defense in the NFL is a joke. You guys should and are crapping your pants right now 4 hours before game time.

I am not saying it is gonna be a cake walk and that we are going to win but its hard to not feel confident as a niner fan knowing you guys are coming of a win that was not hard fought and earned. You got 99 problems and there all NINERS! Am I talking smack? Hell ya and I would gladly like to take this time to say thanks for destroying us in the 86 playoffs. Cause now its going to be redemption time!
