49ers Vs. Giants: Game Day!

Why yes, this is the Empire State Building lit up in red and gold. I'd say that's a good sign!

Well, here we go. The 49ers kick things off at 3:30pm PT on FOX with the chance to head to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis. I'm not really sure what else needs to be said.

We know that the pass rush on both teams will be a key factor in this game. If Eli gets all day he could pick apart the 49ers. If Alex Smith can get some time, he could do some good things on offense. I actually think the pass rush and how each offensive line handles said pass rush will really be the difference-maker today.

We know the 49ers have some filthy receivers and we know somebody among the 49ers skill position players will need to step up if Vernon Davis finds himself double and triple covered. Will Michael Crabtree bounce back from his serious struggles against the Saints? He had the touchdown, but he had some issues with alligator arms. The 49ers could need a big day from Crabtree to take care of business today.

There is plenty to discuss, but at this point, all that's left is playing the game. The winner goes to Indianapolis for the Super Bowl, the loser heads home for the offseason. We do NOT want to head home for the offseason quite yet. I'd love a couple more wins before that happens.

We'll have a Patriots-Ravens game thread closer to noon, 49ers-Giants inactives at around 2:00pm and then the first of several 49ers-Giants threads at 3:15. In the meantime, consider this a chance to get fired up and ready to go. This morning could be interminable, but game time is just around the corner!

So it’s 3 pm here in London and other than the most frustrating thing imaginable happening (I lost out on a super-cheap goalie chest protector because my shipping address was wrong – so yeah, if any hockey goalies here on NN want to unload some stuff, let me know! Hint hint!) I have been thinking Niners all day.

I’ve drank 3 cups of coffee, had 2 bacon sandwiches, beaten the Giants twice on Madden, once with the current team and once with the 89 team vs the 90 team (F you Parcells), watched the 88 and 89 yearbooks, and watched the Catch drive, the Catch II drive and the Catch III drive on Youtube.

I also watched Chris Everett beat the pucky out of Jim Rome, that was cool tool. Phantom sack FTW!

I think I’m excited.

LEGO NINERS

Well, 49ers beat Saints. I love them now, so I don't know if I can say what I'm about to say but I will. WHO'S GOT IT BETTER THAN US?

by InMattWeTrust on Jan 22, 2012 8:34 AM PST reply actions

This is what I want to see

I want to see passes on run downs and runs on passing downs. That is what the West Coast Offense is about to me. It will also have the side effect of slowing down the Giants pass rush, as we will be doing the opposite of what they expect each down.

Yes, this means I want to see runs on 3rd and 10’s and 3rd and 7’s. I want to do anything we can to prevent that Giants D-Line from being able to pin their ears back and just rush our QB. I think they’re good enough to get there and disrupt Alex, possibly leading to game-changing interceptions.

So play conservative on 3rd down, but aggressive on 1st and 2nd. Let our defense and special teams help to win this game by ensuring that we do NOT turn the ball over like Green Bay did. We need to have two hands on that slippery pigskin and maintain the turnover ratio that has gotten us this far.

I also want to see the defense double Cruz instead of Nicks. They’re both good, but Cruz can get behind a secondary for big plays. We need to prevent those big plays. So I would double Cruz on every down with a safety over the top whose main job would be to ensure Cruz does not get past the last line of defense. Then I’d put Rogers one-on-one on Nicks and be secure in the knowledge that, even if Nicks catches some balls, Rogers will be able to tackle him and prevent YAC (unlike that ridiculous play against the Packers where Nicks pinballed off a couple Pack DBs to score a 60-something yard touchdown).

And oh yeah… don’t let ’em complete any of that Hail Mary bull!

by Joe Como on Jan 22, 2012 8:40 AM PST reply actions

Last two defenses to play the giants doubled cruz alot

And nicks had big games
Think we need to be clever about coverage and try to create turnovers the way we have all season-bracket the coverage and make the plays
Think you’re right onthe running game especially with the weather forecast
COME ON YOU NINERS

by Dubniner on Jan 22, 2012 8:54 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

Yes

But Rogers is a better cover corner than anything the Falcons or Packers have. If he’s one-on-one on Nicks, he’ll keep him in check.

this is true

which is what is soo appalling about the hatred of Joe Pa for supposed crimes of SOMEONE ELSE….people here an uninformed report by ESPN (because ESPN loves juicy news, no matter of the truth) and they form opinions before everything comes out

by sanfranfanmdk on Jan 22, 2012 9:06 AM PST up reply actions

His assistant coach

was an eye witness and told him face to face.

He knew and still let the guy have access to the facilities.

Harbaugh -- "We're not into answering questions"

by Critical Roach on Jan 22, 2012 9:09 AM PST up reply actions

No one really knows exactly what the assistant told him, for one

because THAT story has changed several times….and do you think Joe watches all areas of the campus, all the time, monitoring everyone that comes and goes, even if they have nothing to do with the program anymore? If anyone is to blame, it is the 2nd Mile Foundation

by sanfranfanmdk on Jan 22, 2012 9:16 AM PST up reply actions

If an employee tells me another employee is bringing kids to the facilities to rape them. I would make sure the police do something. He did not do that. He told some administration officials and watched it all get pushed under the rug.

Harbaugh -- "We're not into answering questions"

by Critical Roach on Jan 22, 2012 9:21 AM PST up reply actions

Well he was told inappropriate behavior was happening

and again, you are misinformed…Sandusky was NOT an employee at the time, and these “officials” were people in charge of the Campus Police, which acts more like an actual Police department than normal campus securities

by sanfranfanmdk on Jan 22, 2012 9:24 AM PST up reply actions

So if this was one of your kids,

you would be happy that there was no real follow up by REAL police? Campus police investigation is why nothing happened. When outside investigators caught wind of this, then a REAL investigation began. That’s why Joe looks so bad. He did the minimum to protect kids instead of the max.

If Joe was not so worried about rocking the boat, he would have made sure that something got done, FOR REAL.

Harbaugh -- "We're not into answering questions"

by Critical Roach on Jan 22, 2012 9:32 AM PST up reply actions

Yep

Just good enough to cover up anything the campus does not want exposed. They get paid by the campus and that is a huge part of this whole problem. They were not an independent investigation unit. When and independent unit investigated, it was super easy for them to uncover all this.

The only thing he did wrong was in a moral way.

Like you said, he passed information along to people. Public opinion is he did not do enough and that was outrageous. Thus he got FIRED!
He was never going to go on trial except as a witness for the prosecution. Now he can’t do that. He did very little when he was alive and now he is dead and the criminal has an advantage of one less witness.

a person is smart, people are stupid….public opinion says the Niners never should have won last week, and same thing with this week….he gave his statements already, so they can be used…and he did what he could with the information at hand, the man was a Football Coach, not a criminal investigator, if people would get that in their heads, they wouldn’t be so ignorantly angry….anyways, have a great day watching the game, GO NINERS

welcome to the free market

a place where one can be fired for allegations, especially in the corporate world. A corp’s responsibility is to make money not decide whether or not an employee allegedly did or did not do something, be moral or otherwise… if that allegation can bring harm to the bottom line of said corp then firing them is the appropriate and LEGAL thing for the corp to do.

He should have beat the hell out of the guy and then called the police right away. There should have been no call to his dad to “see what to do” or if he should tell Joe Paterno. You think the character of a person like that would be strong enough to go tell the coach what REALLY happened. I’m not going to put my money on it. You really think that someone who put the school and his students before everything would turn a blind eye to child molestation? You are pretty sad. He did all he could do he told the university police, he fired Sandusky from the staff and told the university president. A football coach does not have the authority a president does no matter what they would lead you to believe. The investigation made its way all the way up to the attorney general. Paterno is not the reason this man did awful things. He was a big enough scapegoat to bear it all for them. You go and try to report a child molestation to the police without a victims name and I bet they laugh at you. He took the guy off his staff banned him from bringing any kids to the facility and stayed out of the investigation like he was required to by law. BTW a mom of one of the kids didn’t even press charges on Sandusky, but Paterno did.. Get outta here.

The gameplan should be

1.) Pressure Eli. Keep it constant.
2,) Keep their defensive line guessing and off pace.
3.) Special teams winning the field position battle.
4.) Heavy mixed of Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and Delanie Walker.
5.) Ginn getting a return touchdown!

I just want Williams to hold onto the ball. He don’t have to get any great returns. Just don’t turn it over.

Eli will give us some balls to catch. If we can cash those in, and not turn it over ourselves, we’l win.

After thinking about it some more

I am a little worried about the bad weather….the Niners have gotten here, in a large part, due to their turnover battle (forcing and being careful with the ball), but with the bad weather, I see it balancing things out, meaning it will bring the Niners down to other teams level

by sanfranfanmdk on Jan 22, 2012 8:51 AM PST reply actions

Well according to that logic

the weather should bring the Giants down another level as well, meaning more turnovers than usual for the Giants. :-D

Let's giggity giggity Go 49ers!!!

by Kittles on Jan 22, 2012 8:52 AM PST up reply actions

well i am not sure of their turnover margin

but if it is already average to crappy, then the turnovers cause by weather will be like normal for them lol

by sanfranfanmdk on Jan 22, 2012 8:54 AM PST up reply actions

Eli vs Alex reg season

Eli 16 INT 8 Fumbles. Against good defenses (SF, SEA, WAS) he had 12 turnovers to 5 TD’s. Alex 5 INT 7 Fumbles. 4-1 Turnover/TD

by oceansdad on Jan 22, 2012 11:18 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah

I think the weather hurts both teams, but it hurts the Giants more because they depend more on the passing game whereas we depend more on the running game.

As long as the D keeps everything in front of it and doesn’t give up big-play TDs like in the Saints game, I think we win a low-scoring, ugly slog.

by Joe Como on Jan 22, 2012 8:54 AM PST up reply actions

I am just not sure about this weather affecting the game thing anymore.

I have read close to 14 million articles about how the weather is supposed to affect game play this weekend. Half of the articles rain and a sloppy field favors the offense (receivers know which route they’re running and d-backs don’t, d-line will slip off of the snap, etc.), and half of the articles say it favors the defense (o-line can’t get their footing, running backs, can’t cut as well, quarterback will struggle with passes. We will just have to see how it works come game time, IMO.

Let's giggity giggity Go 49ers!!!

by Kittles on Jan 22, 2012 8:58 AM PST up reply actions

Muddy fields

favor different aspects of the game. Running backs will not be able to make hard cuts, so the holes the offensive line creates will need to be there. You’re not gonna see any Marcus Allen-type reverse field runs.

It also slows down the pass rush, because the D-Lineman can’t take as an extreme angle with their edge rushes (they’ll fall over if they do). This favors strength rushers, so it may be a boon to our pass rush.

Any kind of rain will make the ball even slicker (it’s already pretty slick), meaning there will likely be more fumbles. Keeping 2 hands on the ball will be paramount.

Receivers will have an advantage because they know where they’re going, but at the same time the soggy turf will slow them up, so the safties should be able to keep things in front of them and not get burned deep.

Another thing is that if it’s wet and windy, it’s simply gonna be harder to pass the ball accurately, especially deep.

All of these things, I believe, favor the Niners more than the Giants.

by Joe Como on Jan 22, 2012 9:08 AM PST up reply actions

well the running game is what scares me

Gore and the rest of the RB crew has been really good this year at securing the ball. But if it gets slick out there, we could see some random fumbles by them

but that lack of consistency is more of an indictment on the coaching IMO. You drop Leinhart in preseason without a game plan for the season of who’s your QB. You flip flop between Skelton & Hall. Next year you back up brinks truck for Kolb. He’s hurt you play Hall he’s hurt, finally you play Skelton because his whats left. The media really is doing whatever they can to hype a Pats-Giants SB before it even happens.

by Virginia9er on Jan 22, 2012 10:18 AM PST reply actions

This is true.

All the work they put in this whole season for a Packers/Saints NFC Championship match went down the drain.

Now they’re just sending good money after bad. If Eli wins they’ll be able to say he proved his “elite” status and so it will be him vs. Brady, and “The Year of the Quarterback” will be saved.

But at least if its Niners/Pats, they can hype up Brady for another week. If it ends up Niners/Ravens, though… I think some talking heads will explode.

I'm not sold on the Ravens

they almost lost to freaking TJ Yates, who threw like 80 INT’s that game, and still came down to a last second hail mary that hit the receiver on the shoulder.

Please no stress.

I’d like a nice stress free victory today. The kind of victory where Harbaugh feels comfortable with Kaepernick at some point in the forth quarter. After last week’s rollercoaster, hopefully this week can be well in hand.

Regardless, I’m with the team either way.

- SF GIants Baseball 2011 = *sigh* Home of 6 World Series Titles
- SF 49ers Football 2011-2012 = ??? Home of the 5.5 Super Bowl Champs ( Aaron Rodgers should of been a Niner)
- WHO'S GOT IT BETTER THAN US???? NOOOOOOOOOOBODYY!!!!!!!!!!!!
- A fan of the Warriors and Lakers.

So can we get everyone at Candlestick to chain "WE WANT CARR!!"

As soon as Eli gets on the field?

We still believe!!

Yep...poor guy sounds like he was up all night smoking cigars.

Luckily, the Air Force diverted a jet to fly overhead and drowned Steve out at the end.

Can't be, Coughlin is literate.

Um...

Will you guys forgive me if I crap my pants? All this excitement, you know… has things moving around…

Btw, what the hell do all these supposed TV “experts” think they’re seeing? I didn’t think it should be all 49ers picks or anything, but this insane Giants favoritism is very disappointing. I hate throwing around “east coast bias,” but it is very, very real. This reminds me of when the San Francisco Giants won the World Series 14 months ago.

Alex Smith went from "We Want Carr!" to "The Run" and "The Catch 3."
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS: WORLD CHAMPIONS!
Jim Harbaugh and Alex Smith are our future!
Giants Baseball: Torture. It hurts so good.

Hawks fan here.

Good luck. Defend the coast! You bastards played with such heart last week it was impossible not to root for you.
