49ers Lose NFC Championship Game: This One Is Gonna Sting For A While
It doesn't get much worse than that. The 49ers had chances to win this game and advance to Super Bowl XLVI, and instead the season is over. This one is going to sting all offseason and beyond. The chances were there and it didn't happen. I don't know what else to say. This is about as low as it can get. Yes it is amazing the team got into this position, but right here, right now, that does not make it any easier to accept what just happened.
I don't know what the posting schedule will be like the next day or two. Right now I just want to dig a hole and hide from the world. Given how old I was at the time of the Roger Craig fumble/Matt Bahr kick, I didn't quite grasp the enormity of it. This one stings like no other loss. I'm happy to look at the bright future some other time.
As for Kyle Williams struggles, he will be the goat for this game, but he and others who struggled have bright moments. Complain all you want, but no need for personal attacks on players who have done so much for this team this year.

SOOOOOO fucking CLOSE
Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs this season, hopefully! :)
Eventually, I will be proud of this team and this year's return to glory....
Right now, it’s a painful sting to know a Super Bowl trip just slipped right through Kyle Williams’ fingers.

Look, returned is not his primary role
He had some great returns giving us excellent filed position and we couldn’t always capitalize on it.
What we saw at the end was likely someone trying too hard to make something out of nothing (a lot like prior seasons) to make up for lack of production. That bit us in the ass (as it often did in prior seasons).

Primary role or not
Moving away from a poor punt is basic Returning 101. I still consider Williams a good receiver but he’s always made poor decisions when returning. He should never have the opportunity to return again.
I don't have a pen.
Sorry
Alex Smith was running for his life the whole day, the reasons no WR got close to a catch was that Alex Smith did not have the 3 seconds to get them the football.
His 2 TDs were the results of blown coverage, without those Smith average 4yd per pass and SF average 4.5 per play. The Giants D blown up the SF offense and the Giants Off control the ball all day.

I don't get why he
at first, made a move to run for the ball, then stopped right after. I’m thinking he knew he touched it, but also thought that he could just “play it off” and pretend in never happened. Running after the ball clearly indicates it touched him but by walking away, I think that he thought he could get away with it.

What Wide Receivers?
Beyond Crabtree, we have none.
Williams is a fringe player at the position at best.
Ginn has hands of stone.
Morgan showed some promise before injury.
We took a flyer on Edwards and came up empty.
Crabtree's making me mad
he better show up to training camp and preseason.
Draft or FA some receivers, O-Line and safety depth, and a ton of offense.
WR's were horrible
You probably couldn’t see it on TV, but they were not getting open. Crabtree was doing all this useless juking at the line and getting easily pushed off his route. No frickin’ heart.

No heart
Results speak for themselves.
I think if the juking isn’t getting you open, or isn’t getting you enroute fast enough, then a good WR either explodes into his guy, or blows by him. Jerry used to do that all the time. Heart is about adjustments. Juking is about avoiding contact.

7. I guess are receivers are THAT bad, since they can never get open. Rethinking the first round WR pick.
Wouldn't say...
the receivers are THAT bad. But the Niners are definitely lacking a #1 WR. I don’t think anyone can argue that. Crabtree lacks the size and speed to be a true #1 in today’s game. And his big selling point in college (YAC) hasn’t translated to the pro game.
Not saying the Niners need to draft a WR in the 1st round. But they’d be amazingly short-sighted if they didn’t pick up some WR who is big and can catch the ball (like we’d hoped Braylon Edwards would).
Alex didn't regress.
Delanie was injured. Crabtree didn’t get open all fuckin game – fucking useless.

Open?
The times I saw him open were times there was no way Alex could get him the ball. Cornerbacks know that, and you can’t count those as really open.
If I saw Alex just not choosing him, or a lot of bad throws to him when he’s open then I’d call him open. That’s not what we got.
I did see a pass to him on the sideline that seemed right there and then the refs called it out. I haven’t seen it on TV yet, but I assume Crabtree didn’t have control of it until he went out.

no, he deserves the blame for losing this game
single-handedly. Muffing a punt that would end up costing us the game & then touching a previous punt w/his knee that lead to a Giants’ TD…
by Doni S on Jan 22, 2012 8:06 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
I know he cost us the game
but for most teams, his mistakes render meaningless cause his offense can move the ball
Seriously salary, you just always take the path of the most opposition.
The Giants weren’t moving the ball either yet they somehow won. What was the difference between the 2 teams? One team had a guy put the ball on the grass 3 times, losing 2 of them. Which leads to 10 points for the Giants who win by 3. It’s his fault because the score is tied so all things are equal my friend. He’s the sole difference.

I would disagree
The Giants were moving the ball, but just couldn’t quite sustain drives. That is a lot different than not even being able to get a drive started.
by ColoradoNiner on Jan 22, 2012 8:10 PM PST up reply actions
Point is, Williams was the sole difference-other difference was two sides of same coin
-neither side had big offensive game for diff reasons, Williams’ negligence was the SOLE difference
It was 17-17 going into OT.
The 49ers and the Giants were virtually dead locked in total yards at like 288-288 at the time they put up the stats. The muffed punts were the difference maker is my point.

except more then 1/3 of the 49ers yd came on blown coverage
ie the Safety not covering Davis, when he was their men
Most of the game Giants moved the ball, while 49ers had to rely on big plays and could not sustain drives or convert a 3rd down
Kyle Williams
was supposed to be the 5th wide receiver on this team….Maybe the 8th option really….Crabtree, Edwards, Morgan, Ginn were above him at the start of the season. He did well to improve this year but just wasn’t ready for this stage.
I agree.
Kyle had a great year which was unfortunately ended with some bone-headed plays in the NFC Championship game. I think he has a good future with the team if he can bounce back from tonight’s mistakes.
Remember, Kyle also muffed a punt last year in the New Orleans game. That one was a real heartbreaker too.
Ted Ginn just solidified his new deal. And I think the team needs another option to back him up on special teams. Culliver, Hunter or maybe someone from this year’s draft. Williams will have a harder time competing in next year’s training camp.
He’s definitely behind the 8-ball on special teams.
Was that Kyle? Pretty sure it was Phillip Adams

We lost the game off of points that were literally handed to the Giants by Williams’ turnovers deep on our side of the field. Guys who mess up that badly get cut all the time. Williams doesn’t bring enough to the team to make up for this. If he doesn’t let that one ball hit his knee, we don’t need to go down and score on the other possession he cost us.

Because he doesn't have much experience doing it and he had to in the biggest game of his life.

Since when is not touching a ball or holding on to it (which he does as a receiver) something you need experience for?!!!

People are yelling at Smith for not getting rid of the ball. There’s a reason why we didn’t have a lot of turnovers this year. Smith doesn’t try to force something when it isn’t there. He played smart. He kept us in it believe it or not. He missed on two maybe three deep balls all game. Same as Eli. But when Eli missed he almost got picked. TWICE.

the Giants only rarely rush around the OL (Osi) they send their pressure up the middle, which means Smith could not step into his passes, also he was forced out of the pocket so often that he has no time with the ball.

Considering where the team started this
it has been a great year. Yes Williams screwed up but offense was awful on third down and the D should held Giants to a FG on 3rd and 15.

He may have been open a few times, but there is no way you could say this with any certainty from the broadcast angle.
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
If so, then the opposite must also be true
There is no way you could say with any certainty from the broadcast angle that Crabtree wasn’t open.
See how that works?
People are trying to find a scapegoat, and Crabtree for some unknown, uninformed, and ignorant reason is one of them.
Nevertheless, I did record the game and with some diligence could give you most of the times Crabtree was open and didn’t get the ball thrown to him.
But honestly, would that really change your opinion?
"I put him up against any of the receivers in the league. I can attest to just how hard this man works every single day, and the people of San Francisco really need to appreciate that."
---Kyle Williams
It's because he's not been a good performer since he's been here
so it’s easy to pin blame on him and he’s supposed to be a #1 wide receiver.
I'm sorry, but I disagree with you about him not being a good performer
His teammates and coaches seem to think he’s an exceptionally talented, hard working wide receiver.
Could your perception of him be tainted in some way?
"I put him up against any of the receivers in the league. I can attest to just how hard this man works every single day, and the people of San Francisco really need to appreciate that."
---Kyle Williams
he's definitely not shown to be a #1 WR yet
and that’s what we needed him to be today
"Cruelty, It’s not giving another person what they want. That’s our mindset on defense, to go out and play with everything we have and not give the other team anything." -Patrick Willis
Obviously that wasn't the game plan
or Alex would have thrown him the ball more…
I’m sure I’ve seen V.Davis catch 0.0 balls during a few games. I even remember him complaining about how few balls were thrown his way one game.
But Vernon doesn’t write up the game plan and neither does Crab.
"I put him up against any of the receivers in the league. I can attest to just how hard this man works every single day, and the people of San Francisco really need to appreciate that."
---Kyle Williams
It might not have been the game plan but that doesn't mean he can't step up and take over the game
I want him to be the #1, I want him to see him succeed as a 49er, but the fact is he hasn’t shown that consistency that other #1’s around the league show yet. All I can hope is that he hates this feeling so much that it makes him even more hungry for next year.
"Cruelty, It’s not giving another person what they want. That’s our mindset on defense, to go out and play with everything we have and not give the other team anything." -Patrick Willis
step up and take over the game?
lol, yeah, Ok.
"I put him up against any of the receivers in the league. I can attest to just how hard this man works every single day, and the people of San Francisco really need to appreciate that."
---Kyle Williams
yeah why is that funny?
Do you not think he can do that? I do.
"Cruelty, It’s not giving another person what they want. That’s our mindset on defense, to go out and play with everything we have and not give the other team anything." -Patrick Willis
How do you do that if you aren't throwing or running the ball?
You want Crabtree to call the plays maybe?
"I put him up against any of the receivers in the league. I can attest to just how hard this man works every single day, and the people of San Francisco really need to appreciate that."
---Kyle Williams
I never blamed Crabtree. But I highly doubt he was open all that much if Alex never threw him the ball. He’s had good games this year and Alex is going to throw to him If he’s open.
The only views I saw from behind the QB showed no one open so…
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
Yup.
Alex is not going to throw the ball to Crabs if he’s covered. They don’t have that trust yet and Alex isn’t going to risk throwing it to a guy that he doesn’t trust. Only guy that I see Alex making those tight throws to is VD and Morgan.

I do know that Alex was willing to throw it to VD
in some really tight spaces. He wasn’t willing to do that with Crabtree and that tells me all I need to know.

Agreed...
1) The O-Line needs better depth and some more talent in there to compete. Chilo Rachal should not be on the squad.
2) No doubt. Braylon was supposed to be that guy. But it never turned out. Next year we need to get that big, speedy guy that will give Crabtree some room to breathe.
3) This was an amazing season.

I was hoping it wasn't a "the whistle blew" nonsense. thanks.
the artist formerly known as inbillywetrust
It was, They stopped him and knocked him back
but the reason we couldnt do anything about it was because the whistle blew for the forward progress
fastest forward progress in history
Usually you wait for at least 3 seconds of non progress, not whistle the second he gets tackled.
Lame. I guess the NFL got the Super Bowl they wanted and the refs helps. Yuck.
the artist formerly known as inbillywetrust
except he was going backwards
which was the intention of the forward progress rule, or teams will carry the tackled player back to their end zone for a safety in every play
he wasn't "going backwards"
He got tackled, plain and simple. You blow the whistle when the player is stood up for multiple seconds and being pushed back or not making progress.
you will need to look at the replay
he was clearly going backwards, and was bend over backwards

Yeah...
That was one of those borderline calls. It was the right call. But it’s a coin toss whether the refs make that call in that exact same way every time it happens. The whistles blew quick. And I’d say it’s 50/50 whether or not that happens in another game.
Either way, that play didn’t cost the Niners the game. There were plenty of missed opportunities on the Niners side of the ball. Simply put, you can’t play the way they did and win championships.
Great season, though. Next year, watch out!
Just shows the difference between different referee crews.
In the Bal NE game, defenses were allowed to swarm and tackle guys way after the whistle. Dixon had like 7 Pat defenders on him at one point.

Dunno why they used Dixon on a crucial 3rd down and short again.
That’s like the third time the coaches pulled that crap recently. It could have cost the Niners the game.

ya, lots of weird playcalls this season
Not that I am an NFL coach or anything, but I think other teams have got onto the shotgun draw the niners always run.

Alex Smith without Vernon would have been 10/24 for 84 yards.
I hate to say I told you so, but the offense finally really cost us when we needed it most. THe entire receiving corps is shit, and Crabtree is another bust player we drafted. Rashaun Woods 2.
The offense needs to apologize to the entire defense for the pathetic display they put up. The D held for FORTY MINUTES and got fucked twice because of unfortunate plays and still almost pulled it out. IMO this is the greatest defense in NFL history.

We were at the 15 yard line, First and 10, down 3, and with about 5 minutes remaining. Frank Gore got one carry for the reminder of the game and it was a Shotgun Draw on 2nd and 10 at our own 20. You fucking serious?

Now that's ludicrous.
Jimmy Raye wouldn’t have been able to remember his own playbook and we would’ve been out of timeouts in the 3rd quarter and had about 5 delay of game penalties.

Not totally disagreeing with you, but
The Giants D is legit, and that figures into it. We still had a 17-10 lead until that first muffed punt. We did enough to win. Kyle just had two huge mistakes that cost us the game. Yes we had more opportunities to do something, but we had done enough up to that point.
Also, I don’t believe you hate to say I told you so ;)

I just want to say..
To all of the people who are hating on Kyle Williams.. FUCK YOU. He had a bad day, haven’t we all? Out of all our receivers he is the most promising in my eyes. You say “well why did he try to run that back why not call a fair catch?” He is a football player, He tried to make a damn play and it didn’t happen. I would rather lose from a player trying to make a play than lose from a player’s inaction. At least we went down swinging, I know this loss hurts, but our team looks good for the future, just leave Kyle alone. I’m sure he feels bad enough for us all, without all the hate.

I don't have a problem with Williams having a job next year, but somewhere else
or at the end of our depth chart. And don’t let him near a kick return of any kind ever again. I don’t even want him to look at one.
A lot of it is emotion. He cost us this game. He can still be a good wide receiver. I bet you he never makes those mistakes again. A young guy learning a hard lesson today. Once we settle down we’ll probably all realize he can be an asset as a receiver, as he’s shown a few times this year. We just got way to thin at WR with Morgan going down and Edwards not panning out.

Fuck us for hating on Kyle Williams?
I’ll remember that in 2 weeks when I’m not watching the Niners in the Super Bowl.
Also, he called fair catches on 2 punts that costed us 20-30 yards in field position. He made about 5 horrendous decisions today in only 10 touches.

As far as the game, credit the Giants for doing just enough to win this one, but we niner fans all know that we didnt lose this game because of how the giants played, we lost it because we blew it several times. Overall, a well played game by both sides.
Both Defenses were extraordinary in this game; neither Offense could take anything for granted and it showed.
The Giants simply made fewer mistakes – and in a defensive struggle, that wins the game.
Impressive season for the Niners and their fans.
I’ll be looking forward to their progress and development in the off-season.
Your Offense is fine.
From what I saw, the most obvious explanation for its problems on was simply the Giants Defense – especially its pass-rush – and the Niners’ inability to use safety valves and check-downs properly.
Smith was waiting for the routes to develop for his receivers but the Giants didn’t give your Offense the time.
Plenty of work to do in the off-season but you have a good foundation to build off of.
Thats the key really.
The Niners have a great foundation. There is obviously some holes on the team that injuries magnified this year. A healthy receiving crew would do wonders, need some help on the line, and a little bit more consistency from the qb play…all things that I expect will come from a full offseason of work with the coaching staff.
The future is bright,
Any offensive coordinators expected to be available this offseason?

Hurts so bad
Defense played well enough to win by themselves today, just a shame that we choked with turnovers after using that as our calling card to win ballgames all season long. We BADLY need a better WR1. Only 1 completed catch ALL GAME to a WR? That’s inexcusable. Unfortunately I’m not sure whether to blame Crabtree for being nonexistent or Smith for failing to find anybody except Vernon Davis.

The first amendment
does not protect you from police brutality, let alone ‘free speech from police brutality’ nor does it protect you from false arrest. By the way, I also don’t know what ‘false arrest’ means.
Freedom of speech does not apply here. We have rules.

Freedom of speech
applies here just as much as it does in the ‘outside’ world. Here, we can’t curse; there, we can’t yell “fire” in a movie theater.
No it does not. You are misinformed. If you sign up here, you agree to the rules. If you break them, you are banned.
You’re free to say whatever you want, sure, but you’re also free to be banned for it.

Wow.
If you live in America, you agree to the rules. If you break them, you go to jail. From your insight, are we to suggest there is no freedom of speech in America?
No, I'm saying this site has rules and freedom of speech doesn't prevent you from getting banned on this website for breaking them.

that freedom of speech still exists on the site, just as it does in real life — though, as is apparent, there are limitations in both contexts.
Here, read this again.

I don't think 'freedom of speech"
means what you think it means. So, read this again: You are free to say whatever you want, sure, but you’re also free to be jailed for it. That is the rule in the United States, where we all agree freedom of speech lives, and it is the rule here. Any dissent is effectively semantic or disingenuous.
Listen very closely.
He said “freedom of speech faggots” or something like that up there. He is implying that he can say what he wants on here without being banned because of freedom of speech. This is not the case.
And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it. ... Always a ninja
SaberCats Examiner | SB Nation Bay Area | Niners Nation | Twitter
^^ That is correct.
Freedom of speech isn’t a carte blance to say whatever you’d like. But, if you read what I wrote, you’d see I agree with you last post.
I wrote, “there are limitations in both contexts.” I am not arguing freedom of speech should allow his comments; I’m arguing that its pretty silly to state freedom of speech doesn’t exist “on the internet” or here.
Then you're arguing semantics because you know what we meant.
Freedom of speech implies that you are protected in some way. Here, you are not, so it essentially does not exist here, on Niners Nation, a private institution. “Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech” – we are not congress.
And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it. ... Always a ninja
SaberCats Examiner | SB Nation Bay Area | Niners Nation | Twitter
I don't know what you meant, otherwise I wouldn't waste your time trying to argue.
Freedom of speech does imply that you are protected, and on this site, you are. If I write to you, “Hey James, great comment” I’m protected from being banned because it would be unreasonable. As I wrote, its silly to think freedom of speech is just a phrase tucked into our Constitution — it is an ideal that carries weight and meaning outside of its legal explication.
No, you’re protected from being banned because of our Terms of Service. If I banned you right now, that’s my discretion – Freedom of Speech didn’t protect you from that. Only the ToS governs this site unless something illegal is being done – and nothing illegal is being done by saying you can’t say certain things because, brilliantly enough, you accepted the terms of service. Freedom of speech carries a ton of meaning, nobody is arguing that, but it does not matter one bit when you are on a private website that requires registration that withholds all rights to ban you.
And then God created Saturn ... and he liked it, so he put a ring on it. ... Always a ninja
SaberCats Examiner | SB Nation Bay Area | Niners Nation | Twitter
and the terms of service are written in a way
that they protect the ideal that people should be allowed to say anything they want, with few exceptions. That idea, is of course, freedom of speech.
Freedom of speech as protected by the United States Constitution does not apply on Niners Nation.
The original post from me said as much, even if you mis-interpreted it. Especially considering the original poster was CLEARLY referring to the Freedom of Speech that is protected by said US Constitution. You deciding to wax analytically about some deeper meaning doesn’t change the fact that you’re arguing the meaning of something entirely different than what is being discussed.

Thank you for calling my writing analytical
But, I didn’t respond to the OP. I asked what the “this is the internet not USA” comment was about. And thus, this.
freedom of speech means nothing. If you read the amendment, you will see that. This is a private thing, they make the rules
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
Freedom of speech
isn’t merely a legal doctrine enshrined in the Constitution. It is a malleable idea, and to suggest it doesn’t apply here simply because there exists the chance one may be banned, is analogous to saying freedom of speech doesn’t exist in America because there exists the chance one may be jailed.

I'm not sure
how many times I have to make the obvious, accepted, and prima-facie compelling case that the idea of freedom of speech has an extra-legal meaning.
you’re just rambling now. I’ve actually seen this argument before.
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
I'm not sure how I'm rambling
I’m glad you’ve seen the argument before; perhaps you could substantively refute it?
i don’t need to, no matter how many 6+ letter words you use. As I’ve said, I’ve seen it before. You are wrong about freedom of speech, accept it and move on. please, for the love of all things
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
Does "I don't need to"
mean “I can’t”? Because, if my points are so clearly incorrect, I’d assume they’d be easy to refute?
sure man, whatever makes you feel good. I understand what makes your motor go, I want no part of it. It goes nowhere.
Just go read your comments in “part dos” I don’t need to say anything. If you can’t see the connection to this conversation, then your head is further up your ass than I thought.
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
I'd rather you respond
like Brady or mcwagner, with substantive comments. So far, you’ve just accused me of being wrong (without supporting evidence) said my head was up my ass (I can assure you, last I checked, it was not), and accused me of making comments I’ve never written!
For the 4th time
please find me these comments you love to reference! Thank you.
I don't think you get it
I can ban you for no real reason at all. The real reason we don’t is because it would scare off other users from visiting and is not good for business. Not because of the freedom of speech.
This comment
negates what I’ve been saying. Thank you mcwagner.
I saw it in the pre game thread, you just start rambling when someone calls you, you use a lot of big words etc, and try to keep battling long after you lose. Awesome stuff.
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
That's werid
because I didn’t post in the pre-game thread? Refuting an argument with non-sequitur’s your providing doesn’t inspire much confidence in me, nor does it really refute what I’ve been saying.
Ok, well you call it differen things. I am referring to the “ask a giants fan” thread, you absolutely did. You said the exact same shit. I’m done here. You’re wrong about freedom of speech, and that stand whether your retort has 25 letters per word, or 3
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
If you find me
any comment I made on an ‘ask a giants fan’ thread, I will give you whatever you want. Like, literally, whatever.
The reason I'm offering you that
is because I didn’t post in that thread.
Sure, if you believe it means something else to you, more power to you. Your constitutional right to freedom of speech is forfeit when you agree to a private ToU/ToS. That's all there is to it.
Whether there’s some other intangible meaning to freedom of speech that you personally believe in that you don’t think is forfeit holds no bearing to the statement that “freedom of speech doesn’t apply here.” The freedom of speech that is granted to you by the constitution does not, which is what I said initially and what you are arguing.
You are basically saying “Well I’m talking about a different freedom of speech!” OK. Fine. We’re not.

As I've said, I'm talking about freedom of speech as an idea
Whether any constitutional rights exist here, I’m not sure. Though, I think it is an interesting question.
You directly responded to me arguing my statement. You're essentially taking a homophone and running with it.
Because apparently your freedom of speech is different than everyone else’s. You replied to me, trying to contradict what you said. You said nothing about an “idea” for multiple posts. You are wrong and this is my last reply in the matter.

Please read the amendment. You are clearly misinformed. I’m not trying to start anything. You just suffered a tough loss, you’re angry, etc. But come on man
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
Please read my comment
I’m stating the ‘freedom of speech’ has a meaning outside of the law. Additionally, being misinformed would be an error of, fittingly, information. Improper interpretation, which it seems you are accusing me off (asking me to read the amendment again) is entirely different from an informational asymmetric.
It has meaning, as much as you want to believe it has meaning. It is forfeit when you agree to a private terms of service/use.

nope, it doesn’t. Big words or not, you’re rambling on instead of saying “I lost” just like the Giants pre game thread. This is a pattern. Just be a man and man up
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
Again, I didn't post
in the pre-game thread. I’m sorry you don’t understand my arguments, but these are fairly straightforward points that are, at least in an academic settings (when considering the rights of refugees, for example), not too controversial.
sorry “ask a giants threat part dos” I thought that was obvious. Whatever, I’m done
Can I get some hot sauce for my doughnut?
I'll reiterate my previous offer

3step drops and putting the ball into the playmakers hands. I saw none of that. Too many stupid trick plays and Martz like plays that take 10 seconds to develop. That’s where we should be looking at why they lost.

Agree on the long developing plays
The quick hitters seem to work better for Gore. Not very many reasons to have Gore running a 5 sec toss left around the edge with Davis and Snyder pulling.
Weak WR corps
And it showed today…bigtime!!!! Kyle Williams had a shocker – you’d think that a rook would learn from an earlier mistake. Secure the f…ing ball!! Crabtree is an average WR at best and we missed Ginn and another WR threat (josh Morgan). We need to rethink here. The D played unreal again and if it weren’t for them we would have lost by 20. None of us expected to be here anyway, do lets see the good in it. We’ll build for this season. Go Niners!!

it was a loss plain and simple. We succeeded better than we did last year but that is simply progress and we cannot and will not (I hope) rest on any laurel because even they have thorns. We have to move forward to building up the team more and more and correcting any deficiencies.

I enjoyed this season. I have hope for next season. Nothing will change that.
this game is simple
You don’t turn the ball over and you win. Been that way forever. As a punt returner, you have yo be decisive. Kyle wasn’t all night. It cost us the Super Bowl. That’s what happens when you aren’t a big time player. I’m not gonna crucify him, but he should step up and take his licks.

Why not? He's been a very promising receiver this year
KR/PR’s not his primary job anyway. Ginn will be healthy next year. KW will be a very good #3/4 receiver, which is his role next year.
I think that with Morgan (hopefully) coming back, Crabs, Ginn (mainly for return duties), and the #1 type receiver we draft or get in FA (because it is so obvious that we need to make a move in this way) Williams is pushed off the roster. He’s an okay #3/4 guy, but I think Ginn and Morgan have those spots next year.
Oh for sure. I trust the both of them. They are so in sync when it comes to drafting and just football in general. I mean, even before this game, it’s not like Williams was putting up monster numbers. He may have been the odd man out anyway.
I thought he played extremely well this season
albeit used sparingly.
Hopefully Harbaugh fixes or throws away that power run game offense that hasn’t really worked this year.
Training camp would help.
I agree
but Ginn needs to be used sparingly on offense due to his questionable hands and the fact he’s too invaluable as the return guy. Can’t have him getting injured in a facet of the game where he rarely contributes.

i can't help but think that kyle will be a stellar player
but he’s way too fast for his own good. in each situation, if he’d have just taken a split second to collect himself before acting- the results would have been different.
a. the reverse. take a split second to catch the ball and see the field, then use your god given speed.
2. the knee. take a second to evaluate the ball, and STAY AWAY! he rushed to the ball like he always does.
c. secure the ball- get past the gunners and then use your god given speed.
if he can get his head right, he’ll be crazy dangerous. and he’s signed through next year….so it’s time to embrace him.
You don't give up on a player over a few plays no matter how costly.
You give up on players who give up on themselves.
It’s not obvious to me which path Kyle will take but it’s up to him and the Niners organization will respond to his decision.
He tried to transition the ball from one side to another which is why he had such a tenuous grip on the ball. He prioritized “Making a play” when the priority was “Ball-Control”.
A clear mistake on his part, but not one that should end his career.

Well, since I'm trying not to blame this whole thing on Kyle Williams, I'm going to spread some
blame to Greg Roman, too.
The predictable 2nd and 10 runs up the middle killed our offense when we DID have the ball.
For the future, when you’re trying to ESTABLISH the run, you do it on first down or 2nd and 7 or shorter. You don’t set up your offense to get stuffed and your QB running for his life on 3rd and 10 over and over and over.
For that matter, at the END of the game, you’re not really trying to ESTABLISH the run anymore, so don’t bother trying to pick up a 3rd and short on 2nd and 10 when you’ve been getting stuffed in that situation the whole game.
I don't know what to think of Roman
after this game.
"One game at a time. Let's just keep it rolling." Justin Smith
I'm at a lost for words really.
The easy scape goat is Kyle. But I gotta remember it is Ginn’s job. Then what about that non fumble? What about the shit on 3rd down?
D did play big, thought we would run it more, but we didn’t.
Once we held them to a second punt on ot i though we had the game.
It is what it is. At the end of the day, sports are entertainment, and i’ve been entertained longer than I have been for 15 seasons.
We will get back to the SB someday…just wasnt now.
Make now mistakes, this fucking hurts…but did ANYONE see us here?
I sure didn’t.

We all might want to blame Williams for this game and deservedly so…but what about Ginn… His whole career the guy has been a P$&@y can’t play through any injury…besides Crabtree being invisible he’s the guy to blame if anyone

I've been thinking about it
we lost Josh Morgan, Ted Ginn and empty handed with Braylon.
Kyle’s a promising receiver, who was just too inexperienced/stupid with the ball. He’ll learn.
Well think of it this way. Next year, we have Crabs, hopefully Morgan, and Ginn (mainly for his returning abilities). If get another #1 receiver next year either through the draft or FA (which we really should), then I don’t know if there is room for Williams on the team. I think he is easily replaceable.
We will carry more than 4 WR's
especially after what happened this year. No reason Brett Swain and Joe Hastings need to play WR
Yeah, you may be right, but I also think that we acquire more than one receiver in the offseason. Williams can be okay, but he is too small. I think he could be be replaced. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is back on the team again, but I do think we can do better. If I were GM, I would try to find an upgrade.
Yeah,
I’d ideally like a top tier FA and then a drafted one. (FA signings don’t usually seem to work for some reason.)
I think it has to do with the fact that
the top guys are always have super inflated contracts. Unless you have a record setting year, most guys will never come close to living up to their contracts.

yeah cause that would hope crabs get open...
hard to make alot of places when you are constantly on the run, and can only throw to your TE’s and RB’s cause the WR’s can not get separation
Crabtree got plenty of separation
Just not a lot of balls thrown his way.

Should have expected this comment. How is your I told you so moment going? I hope you are proud of yourself.
Most of us realized losing was a possibility, doesn’t mean we are happy about it or should rub it in other 49ers’ fans faces, like you.
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
is that what I'm doing?
most of my assesments of the team are irregardless of game outcomes, which are not necessarily insightful in terms of gauging the quality of team and its players
The gist of my response there was to illuminate the other side of that dubious argument, which is that it is the receivers that represent the shortcomings of this offense.
A lot of your comments here are the I told you so type, that I’ve been waiting for for weeks, the 49ers haven’t obliged you there until today though.
I’m in agreement that the offense is to blame as much as Kyle, but it isn’t like the Giants defense didn’t have anything to do with it either.
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
you mean those two plays?
no, there was no problem with those plays. The unfortunate part is that was the extent of our offense.
that's a rather elemtary way to look at it
“so, Davis made two big plays, therefore the other receivers aren’t dong their job?”…that neglects the myriad of factors that affect each play of each game.
Oh, so now you're saying it's a lot more complicated than just
“Alex was screwing up,” which is pretty much every point you’ve ever made.
I see. Yes, that’s true.
Smiths' criticisms stand alone, independent of his teams' successes or failurers
but your assertion that Davis’ performance shows an inherent problem with the WRs based on production is not sensical.
Nonsensical? Do you know the first thing about analysis and isolating variables?
Alex to Vernon = No problem! TDS!
Alex to everyone else = Serious problems.
Anyone with a halfway rational mind looking at that will say, “We need better wide receivers.”
Lemme guess, you're going to point out the three yard rollout pass where
he hit Gore in the knee.
Yup, THAT was the backbreaker, there!
i love you, guys.
good health to you and good healing. stay hard.

by The Licensed Pessimist on Jan 22, 2012 8:16 PM PST up reply actions
I didn't see that
I saw Alex getting pressured a lot and saw him hit 2 deep TD’s. One deep miss to WIlliams isn’t a big thing. Can’t hit’em all. He threw a few in the dirt but again was on the run with a wet ball. He got us a lead and had no turnovers against a D that was playing pretty excellent coverage. I blame Williams and probably playcalling.
Also, holy shit gotta give Eli credit. He took advantage of the extra opportunities Williams gave him and kept getting up after being repeatedly planted in the turf. Dude looked like he jumped on a grenade at the end of the game. I’m by no means a fan of his, but props.
WWJHD?
He ran the ball well to avoid the pass rush, and connected on a couple big TDs.
Awful play-calling.

Sure, they lose, so it's Alex's fault. Such is the opinion of everybody who doesn't usually watch this team.
Ignore the offensive line, ignore the drops, ignore the fact that we have no receiving targets outside of Vernon Davis and ignore the fact that the play-calling was so obvious down the stretch that any defense in the league could have shut down that offense, regardless of who was throwing the football.

Whether or not the niners won or if KW were on the team and made those mistakes
doesn’t matter in the terms of an objective assessment of how Alex and the offense performed. The “he played well enough to win” argument is subjective and contingent to how other aspects of the team performed.
So many complaints about this game
1) I don’t understand the play calling at times. When they were running the ball very well they killed drives by switching to passes.
2) The goal line formation for two plays earlier in the 4th at the 50 yard was mind boggling.
3) The Giants jumped the first slant route to Crabtree and Alex didn’t bother to go to him the rest of game. Not getting the receivers involved cost the offense severely in the 4th and OT. Also, it would help if the offense put in more than 3 plays in the playbook for Crabtree.
4) Ultra conservative coverage (DC decision) in the 1st half was costly. All the decision in the 1st half were conservative and put the 49ers behind in the game. Good job trying to run out the clock with 2:30 left, shm.
5) The only bright side to #10 is he overshadowed Roger Craig. Roger gets a little relief now.
6) I felt all week Ray McDonald would need a big game and he did. I had my doubts all week about missing Ginn’s sure hands on special team. Ultimately Ted Ginn Jr. being hurt cost the game.
7) Offense needs to be much better next year for the team to even sniff this sort of season. Defense don’t play that well two years in a row. Probably closes the book on a few long time 49ers career at getting SB ring, sigh.
"Defense don’t play that well two years in a row."
Especially not ones that live/die on turnovers. Our defense gave up a ton of yardage through the air all season.

2nd down: Shotgun draw play
3rd down and long: WR no separation, Alex runs/gets sacked.
"You play to win the playoffs, and we let 'em off the hook!" -Herm Mora Green
LMAO @ how exact that play calling has been for most games this season
If we can see it, then do they think other team’s don’t?
If not those 3, then it’s 1st down: Slant, 2nd down: Bootleg PA, 3rd down: Out routes short of first down yardage. 4th and 2: Punt.

That TB injury play
I thought Goldson was in way better position for that one. If anything I think TB made the mistake.
The mistake on that play was by Eli’s WR. Was it Nicks, can’t remember? Clearly miscommunication on the offense. The result on the defense was more just unfortunate, but I’d venture toward Goldson since he’s the one with the view of the field.

yeah, hard to "fault" a guy there
that’s just an unlucky play. if you see an INT chance you go for it.
I don't put them on Dashon. He broke on the ball before T. Brown did, it was just unfortunate. And rogers dropped the pic before the contact, so that isn't his fault either.

They didn't win, we lost it
These are the worst kinds of losses.
Did anyone else feel like all the breaks that were going our way all year completely went against us this entire game?
1) 2 INTs dropped due to collisions
2) Bradshaw’s forward progress non-fumble
3) Williams – need I say more. Don’t forget he dropped the ball on the WR reverse too!
However, we could have helped ourselves out with more than 1 (garbage time) 3rd down conversion on offense and some better play calling (really a WR reverse in the rain?)

Credit to the Giants Defense and ST play, and the offense that did its job when needed.
Credit them then but
Tell me which breaks they didn’t get. I’m just saying it seems those breaks went our way nearly all year but we couldn’t buy one today. Yes, the Giants made their own breaks and If they don’t get half of these breaks we win. However, nothing can compare to the Bradshaw fumble.
Eh
49ers had plenty of chances to win, especially late in regulation when a mere FG wins it. Instead we go 3 and out, and then some questionable plays lead to a drained clock.
Agreed
I give them credit but, and this was my original point, what makes the loss hard is that if we don’t make those mistakes (if we get a break or two) we most likely win.
You're absolutley right
It was a game that the Niners lost because they couldn’t capitalize in crunch time. Throw in the missed INT’s because of collisions, the refs being whistle happy, and Williams’ mistakes and it’s a big, fat L.
I kept telling myself the Niners were going to pull it out when the D held and gave the offense the ball w/ some time remaining to make plays, but then the play-calling was abysmal and they couldn’t advance the ball to even attempt a FG. I’m absolutely crushed right now.

He bobbled that reverse early in the game too. That was all on him. You gotta take him out of that punt return duty after the first one. He clearly isnt in the game mentally. You have gotta adapt and go with a plan B, even if you have to make it up on the fly. Kendall Hunter, Crabtree, Walker, Rogers, T Brown. Get one of them in there!
Hey it was a great game
It was going to come down to a mistake by one side at the end. Williams is the Goat and deservedly so but he would not have been on the field if it wasn’t for injuries. That’s just Football. We had a great run and came within a muffed return of going to the super owl. It is only going to get better and next time we will not make the same mistakes.

Time to cut the cord on Chilo
and I’ve been one of his biggest supporters on this site. He doesn’t seem to retain anything he’s learned the previous season and has to relearn it all.

I’m sure someone will pick up the slack. I do appreciate the writers that have come and gone, but the site must move on.
Well, I've already got about 5000 words written about draft-eligible wide receivers.
My rankings did extremely well, people loved ‘em this offseason. I’ll do some stuff, but I’m sure Fooch has plans for the same type of coverage. We’re trying to get better every day.

Re-sign Goldson, Rogers, and Ginn Draft a WR or two, get a rotation player in the middle rounds
come back stronger next year. Our schedule will be tough but at least we won’t get the “it doesn’t count they’re in the NFC West” crap
I don't want Goldson on this team next year unless it's for $5 million per year or less
there are some good safeties available via FA.
I doubt he leaves the Redskins
but there are others who are far better safeties than Dashon “Me Hit Big” Goldson
I’m sorry, I see plenty of the Redskins, Landry is not good.
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
Landry is great in my opinion.
Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs this season, hopefully! :)
He’s one of the better players on their defense, but he isn’t good. Maybe it is because he’s asked/tries to do too much, but Goldson is better.
Would depend on the $$ difference IMO, whatever happens with Goldson will though.
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
How is Goldson better?
In laying big hits? He’s not better in actual coverage, which is what a safety is supposed to do. He’s not better in preventing YAC either.
Landry is probably better in coverage 1-on-1, easily the weakest part of Goldson’s game, but playing over the top in space (usually what a FS is doing), Goldson is better.
Attack this day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. ~ Jack Harbaugh
I'll take the coverage any day of the week and twice on Sunday
Haven’t we had this conversation before? Where we came to the conclusion that we look at completely different things from our safeties?
Um, possibly. I’m not sure I’ve actually had many lengthy discussions on our safety situation with anyone.
I’m still kind of up in the air with Goldson. It is still going to be the $$, it is hard to make any real evaluation until we know what he is willing to take to be a 49er, or if he’d rather take his chances as a FA. Clearly that didn’t work out as he planned last year.

Sorry for not replying.
Saying he deserves more looks, even if he’s covered he can make the play. Just generally pissed at offensive play calling.
Don't like that at all.
You deserve more looks when you put in time during the OFFSEASON to get on the same page as your QB. Alex will never squeeze a ball into a tight situation unless you have that chemistry and trust with him. Hence Alex will only cut it loose and make the balls to the walls throws with VD. Anyone else, he’ll err on the safe side and over throw it or throw it out of bounds.

He seemed really caught up in the moment.
Real angry faced & strong voiced. He was clearly holding back on wanting to say more. When I posted he was going Diva, it looked like he was about to bust. But he held back his emotion enough to just say “Its football” or when baited by a reporter “that’s what I’m saying”. Didn’t look good.
I like that
Shows Crabs is hungry. He will be in the offseason and will be ready to rock-n-roll next year. I still believe in him
I'm not in the group that wants Crabs gone.
But I definitely believe that once he gets some actual off season time with Alex, their play will improve vastly. Like I said, Alex will not give you a chance to fight for a ball if he doesn’t trust you. Crabs can complain all he want about not getting enough opportunities, but until he finishes one off season his chatter means nothing.

This is only the beginning yall
I know this mess stings like hell, but it only shows us what we already knew…that we were weak on the outside. Having basically one person to throw the ball to isn’t gonna cut it. We all knew that. Kyle was put in a position he wasn’t ready for, and it showed. Cutting him isn’t the answer. Let’s let Harbaugh coach him up, and hope that his mistakes fuel him to have a hell of a year for us next season. We proved a hell of a lot this year. We are back…we are going to be consistent contenders. One loss hurts like hell…but one loss won’t stop this 49er show.

RE: WRs
Harbaugh could do worse than go Bill Walsh in the 1981 draft and just draft himself a wide receiver corps.
I doubt we’ll find one as good as Ronnie Lott was a DB in the draft, but it is clearly the worst part of the team right now. Everything else is at least competent.
I just want to say, Thanks for the PHENOMINAL game guys
Seriously, Kudos to your entire team. If you guys had won, it would sting, but I would be cheering for you all the way. You deserved it just as much as I did…
Either way NE was going to face a badass D that nobody picked to even be in the playoffs, let alone in the SB.
Er... "we"
not “I”… keyboard phail…
but the rest went how I wanted it to :-)
3 critical mistakes
Mistake 1)
Niners stop giants on a 4th and 1, with a 7-0 lead and with a lot of momentum. The 49ers promptly fumble the ball on a reverse to KW. Not sure if it was Kendall Hunter or Kyle William’s fault, but taking an 11 yard loss after such a huge defensive stand killed that drive and some momentum.
Mistake 2)
Kyle Williams lets the ball scrape his knee after an amazing defensive stop. The niners still should have stopped the Giants on that 3rd and long though.
Mistake 3)
Kyle Williams fumbles the ball at the worst possible time. The win % probably dropped from like 50 to 10 on that one.
Of course, the niners punted 5 times in a row and could not get anything going (or get a meaningful 3rd down conversion). Smith was throwing the ball into the ground a couple of times on those last few drives – not sure if it was pressure or if the receivers could get no separation.
What does the 49ers salary cap situation look like? They have to re-sign Alex, Goldson and Carlos to longer-term deals. Do you think they make a play for a FA WR or stick with the draft.
Can't complain though...
From 6-10 to 13-3 and an NFC title game appearance.
And all that without a full offseason to learn the offense and without a solid WR.
Here’s to the future…
I was wondering if Alex didn’t have a grip on those balls he threw into the ground due to the rain. Looked like the receivers were completely covered on those plays anyway, so maybe he was just throwing the ball away.

How can people be talking about next year already??
It is so far away, and so uncertain! It is really hard to get to the NFC championship, especially to repeat it. And yet people are already looking at how good we will be next year. Do you realize how big an opportunity this was? Do you realize what just slipped through our (Kyle William’s) hands?
Of course we realize.
But it’s often less painful to think about the future than to dwell on the (very) recent past.

49ers mistakes hopefully correctable.....
1. Abandon the run in 4th qtr & overtime. 49ers as a team ran for 150yds; not one rushing attempt with 4mins left in game or in overtime.
2. Turnovers -2 (Giants 2 49ers 0). You would think that Ahmad Brashaw run was a fumble so team would be @ -1 for the day in 4th but nope refs botched that one!
3. #1 Special Teams Unit got out played by the Giants on this day. There are three facets in this game unfortuately only 2 played came to play.
4. Questionable play calls on down & distance (Boobie Dixon for a crucial 3 & short with “jumbo package” instead of Frank) Or (Not 1 screen pass to negate giants pass rush) Or (1st quarter you have momentum on your side & you decide to run a reverse with Hunter pitching ball to Kyle which he fumbles & now looking @ 2 & 20) Why risk that in this rain with two of your lesser experienced players?
Just some obervations I’m sure I’ll have more! This game stings because the team did uncharacteristic things throughout the game on crucial parts of the game that all bounced the giants way!! Still proud of how far they came this year but this game was to be had by the 49ers & they didn’t capitalize.

Okay I can MAYBE forgive the fumble in OT but WTF is up with letting the ball bounce on the floor and touch you? They tell you to stay away from the ball in high school on returns if you can’t catch it!! And WTF is up with diving to catch the ball on a return? Just so depressing…….
Let's start looking toward next year
I for one have had enough bitching and moaning (on my own part I’m speaking) and am ready to start looking towards what we need to do next year. We have some necessity re-signings as far as I see it next year. In order I’d say Alex, Carlos, Ahmad, Ginn and Goldson (Is Morgan FA next year? I think he is and he should be resigned but I think that’s just a formality.) Based on those resignings I’m not too sure what we can do more in FA but it would help to get some help at WR and OL. Then we have the draft where we have 7 picks all in the lower part of the rounds. We have a need at WR and OL and I’d like to get some Seconary help and perhaps a new young OLB to pair with All Star Aldon. More to come but I thought I’d toss that out there since I’m bored with moping. :-)

Just a quick thought...
If we fire Roman (probably not), should we get David Shaw as our new OC?

you would want someone who runs a very similar system to Harbaugh’s. Not too many people fit that bill.
Which is why Shaw fits the bill. He was Jim's OC at Stanford

We're not gonna fire Roman...
…and after that bowl game, I’m not sure I’d want Shaw as our OC. Give me Geep Chryst!
I'm honestly baffled by the interest
He doesn’t strike me as a head coach, particularly a college one.
Roman needs someone to kick him in the head
and get his act together. I really like what Geep Chryst did in the NO game planning for specific situations. That’s what you want from an OC

His play designs are looking good
just change playcalling responsibilities or maybe the overall philosophy in playcalling. For all we know he wants to air it out but its not the gameplan yet.
A Good Pain
1) Great season by the Niners. It hurts now, but only because we fell from such a great height. We’ll get there again in the foreseeable future.
2) Kyle WIlliams … maybe he was in the game because of a lack of depth and he has some positive aspects for the future … but after tonight he’s dead to me and many other Niners fans, I think.
3) Crabtree could have done more, but the Giants have a solid defense and covered him like a #1. His failure to show up tonight is a symptom of the lack of WR depth.
4) Alex looked kind of vintage towards the end of the game … bad vintage, but not all awful. Then again, so did Eli, throwing into heavy coverage repeatedly and getting lucky to get out of there without any INTs.
5) This pain will make the team stronger. Next season, next season.
6) WHO’S GOT A FUTURE BETTER THAN US? NO-BODY.
In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us"
You've again taken things for granted though
Good drafting and roster additions are not a given. It’s quite possible on the flip side that the team loses some of the group of Carlos Rogers, Dashon Goldson, Ted Ginn, Ahmad Brooks, and I’m sure I’m leaving another FA out of the picture.
Being optimistic is fine, but realism also tells me that the chances of this team going as injury-free as they were this year is highly unlikely. Don’t take it for granted is all I’m saying.
I’m thrilled about the future of the organization, but it doesn’t mean I see Super Bowl banners as a likely scenario just based on expanding one winning season into a trend of linear progression.

I'm sorry but
This game was clearly Kyle Williams fault. If Alex Smith throws 2 interceptions, and one when he’s backed up inside his own 20, and we lose, it’s Alex’s Smith’s fault. If Frank Gore fumbles twice in the same scenarios, its Frank’s fault. So the loss was Kyle’s fault. I hope he comes back stronger next year, but this game’s all on him.
There are 3 areas of football and we won just one of them.
Our defense rocked. Played one of their best games of the year against a balanced Giant team. At halftime it looked like Cruz might kill us. But we stepped up, and save running into each other instead of picks they were AMAZING.
The offense was not good enough. Not enough physical running or at least enough of it to find a good play-calling rhythm. Yes, we didn’t make 3rd downs but too many were crap down and distance. All I know is that when Gore was involved—runs, screens, etc—the plays were almost always positive. Why didn’t he get more touches, especially late? Instead Alex was chucking it away. Not a bad game from him, mind you. He’s running the plays that get killed.
And special teams, well, we lost that, too. Big time to the tune of two fumbles that essentially gave them 10 points. If you told me we’d hold the Giants to 17 in regulation, I would have said book me in Indy. Really missed Ted today and we just didn’t get Akers into position to get us more points. Lee was awesome as always. But was it just me or did Kyle seem shaky back there for much of the game—uncertain, a little scared? Think the coaches should have made a change after the first fumble just to be sure. Even if it meant making fair catches.
Anyway, you can’t win when you don’t win two of the three unit battles. And what stings is that I do think we’re the better team. No one will convince me otherwise.

Sucks to lose from Special Teams
But I think the GM and HC see what they need to get to the next level. Def will get better and I am sure we will get another Pass Rusher on 3rd down to movtivate the other LB. I really cannot see Goldson coming back. He plays more like a SS than FS. Might as well address with FA or Draft. But we have to get a WR opposite Crabtree. Painful Positives

3. Alex Smith had a great year and made a statement
4. Nobody expected us to even win the NFC West….we played with heart.

While Williams made the last fatal play, there's a lot of blame to go around.
The offense didn’t look as good as last week, the play-calling on offense was suspect, and the defense didn’t look great in the first half but came out much improved. The loss stings so much to the point where I don’t think I can watch the Super Bowl, but the fact of the matter is the 49ers had a fantastic season and things still look very bright going forward. I can’t wait to see this team play again come August in the preseason.

You can't say he wasn't a huge part of it
that first muffed punt gave the Giants a td. The second one gave them a FG and the victory.
Lots of stuff happened, but when you’re in a position like the 49ers were today every single person has to play at the top of the game and a single player can cost the game.
Not saying it wasn’t a huge part, but simply pointing to the fact that 1-12 on 3rd down is atrocious is not a reason to jump down my throat.

In truth, this one doesn't hurt nearly as much...
Overall, the losses to the G-Men in 1987 and 1991 hurt much worse. In fact, even the playoff losses to the Vikings in 1988 and to the Redskins in 1984 hurt worse. Why were those more painful, you ask? Because in each of those seasons I fully expected the Niners to be in the playoffs. This year I had zero expectations for our team and now I’m just ecstatic about how far the lads have come and what a great position we’re in to continue building. I’m eager for next season. My only disappointment is that we’re going to be drafting 28th or 29th in the draft. On the other hand, the Niners are well on their way to becoming a team players want to join again (remember the ’80’s?), so I think that will make any free agency efforts in which we engage that much smoother.
Yeah, we lost and hopefully someone is there to console Kyle Williams. BUt there is exactly no reason to hang our heads. I still fully believe that Nobody, NOBODY has it better than us. We’re on the rise and other teams will do well to watch the fuck out.
Best to ya, friends.
P.S. Really, the losses to Staubach and the Cowboys back in the ’70’s were much, much harsher than today.
I was young in 1987 so it didn't hurt much
the ones that hurt the most for me were the Packer ones in the early 90s.

Draft Jeffery or Sanu, line will be fine with a full offseason, keep Carlos, Goldson, Ginn.. Joshua back… sign justin smith untill 1300, and we’re good

Yup, they were preventing YAC
and, honestly, they did an outstanding job of it. There was even one play over the middle where Cruz backtracked real quick, and could have gotten behind Rogers, but because Roger had been careful, he was able to keep Cruz in front of him and make the tackle.
They kept him out of the endzone and kept his YAC under control.

Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs this season, hopefully! :)
Not here to troll
But, I was VERY happy when I saw Ted Ginn inactive.
Anyway, you guys are a damn tough team, and I have a lot of respect for you. You have a hell of a coach, and a hell of a Defense.
As a NYG fan, just curious, does anyone think Colin Kaepernick will get a chance next year?

JPP for NFL Defensive Player of the Year
This game was a gut punch to the nut sack
Sure we can all blame Williams, but there is plenty of blame to go around. Crabtree disappeared against a very suspect defensive backfield. He never got open. Gotta look forward to next season because this one hurts too much.
Another year, another chance to hope for the team !!
He was open early and often
"I put him up against any of the receivers in the league. I can attest to just how hard this man works every single day, and the people of San Francisco really need to appreciate that."
---Kyle Williams
so you have access to the coaches film then?
"Cruelty, It’s not giving another person what they want. That’s our mindset on defense, to go out and play with everything we have and not give the other team anything." -Patrick Willis
As much access as you and this joker
"I put him up against any of the receivers in the league. I can attest to just how hard this man works every single day, and the people of San Francisco really need to appreciate that."
---Kyle Williams
so then you saying
he was open early and often is not a fact either.
"Cruelty, It’s not giving another person what they want. That’s our mindset on defense, to go out and play with everything we have and not give the other team anything." -Patrick Willis
It is what I saw
Yeah, I watched the game and I recorded it so I could rewind during the game and skip the commercials.
I saw Crabtree and other receivers open during the game.
You didn’t?
"I put him up against any of the receivers in the league. I can attest to just how hard this man works every single day, and the people of San Francisco really need to appreciate that."

Williams must go!!
I know I’m just still really upset over this miserable loss, but even so there is absolutely nothing Williams does that we can’t find with another minimum contract receiver. I just won’t be able to stand looking at the guy in a 49ers uniform. He doesn’t do anything good enough to keep him around after that monumental choke job. We’re talking about just being able to catch a punt TO GO TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cutting Kyle Williams would send a bad message to the team
There is no doubt that Kyle Williams was responsible for 10 points of 2 turnovers for the team, but if the niners were to cut him, that would really disrupt team chemistry. You’re basically as an organization throwing an entire player under the bus for a team loss, and that can never lead to a healthy locker room.
cut or release williams?
I don’t think they will, if he is under contract, they will let him earn it but he really has to do a lot more to make everyone truly forgive him for this. I’d rather have an injured Ted Ginn than healthy Kyle Williams, not like he helped the Niners in the passing game either.
Delanie Walker should of been returning the kicks
Walker returned kicks before, why didn’t he do it this time. Ted Ginn should of suited and called fair catches every time so we don’t turnover the ball.

Looks like a few really good receivers will be out there this offseason. Vincent Jackson would be amazing. His speed would really open things up for Vernon Davis in the middle I think. Bring back a healthy Josh Morgan to be the big goal-line target. We will be set for next season.
#10 been making those mistake everytime after Ginn went down, not
sure why or how the coach didn’t that …. you try doing too much beyond your skills you tend to lose most times that’s what #10 did!
hopefully they cut that #10 guy like they did to Roger Craig, raiders always looking for leftovers anyway
