So headed in to the offseason the number one need after following this game is.....
First round Wide Receiver
Second Round Corner Back
Third Round Wide Receiver
Fourth Round Outside Linebacker
Fifth Round Running Back
every other pick Wide Receiver
It is just clearly obvious after the showing we have had in the Playoffs. Morgan and Williams will probably be our starting Wide Receivers next year. Crabtree we should trade for a good draft pick. Ginn will probably be let go as he is really a no factor in the passing game.

I don't know if you watched the game but
Ted Ginn needs to be resigned purely for the fact that he is a kick returner not named Kyle Williams.
Currently satiating my hunger for Kings basketball with a renewed focus on the NINERS

It’s so obvious after that game.

You mean when they're wide open and overthrown on the long pass?

Lol! 1!
Eli missed a wide open Manningham down the field and threw 2 balls that only weren’t intercepted because our defenders ran into each other.

I agree w/ the need for WR's, obviously...
But can someone tell me how the video replay of the punt hitting Williams’ knee was ‘conclusive’? I watched it until my eyes crossed and still there wasn’t anything that made me believe it was utterly conclusive, which would allow for an overturned ruling on the field. That play will haunt me.
A similar play happened in the first game against the Giants this year, where the Giants thought a punt bounced and hit Ginn. They challenged, but lost. I can’t believe the same shit happened again.

Sorry....
I watched that play too. As soon as I saw the ball “flutter” past Williams and the defender pick it up and run, I knew our goose was cooked. Look, put simply…..Kyle should have to walk home for being anywhere NEAR that punt. If you’re goin’ to catch it, catch it. If not….BACK THE HELL AWAY FROM IT AND LEAVE IT ALONE!

Again.....
If he didn’t feel like he could field the play correctly, then get as FAR away from the ball as possible! It’s a skill they teach most returners in COLLEGE for gosh sake! This isn’t wk 2 where the lose could be turned around. It’s the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME! Get onboard man!

Obviously we need WRs, and more than one.
I’m still hesitant at drafting your late first round pick as a WR, though. There’s usually only one or two “certain” WRs in any given draft, guys you have a strong feeling will succeed. Beyond that, it’s a complete crapshoot. I wouldn’t take the chance in the 1st. Instead, go for that DB you’re talking about.
Then go for a WR in the second round, and another two in the 5th and 6th rounds.
Tedd Ginn is a kick returner
Not a WR. When you play people out of position, shit happens. He is as good a Returner as they come, he just needs to play Returner. Kyle Williams is probably nice guy, but he needs to find his way with another team as just not fair to teammates to keep him on team.

All season long..
I thought that the CB position would need to be upgraded early in the draft. But as the season went along, Rogers turned out to be an awesome pickup, a reliable shutdown corner, a ready and willing tackler, a sure-handed ballhawk. I know he didn’t have the best day against Cruz, but one bad day, on a muddied up field, isn’t going to change my mind about him. He is a pro-bowl worthy CB1. Tarell Brown also stepped up big in the 2nd half of the season. His 4 Ints all happened in the last 4 games. I think his maturation into a CB2 has already started, and he was a big upgrade over anything we had last year. Chris Culliver had an up and down rookie season. He played exceptionally well in some spots, and was burned repeatedly in others. I think for a 3rd round pick that played as many high-pressure downs as he did, that he held up remarkably well. Tramaine Brock, is a decent insurance CB, but we can take a flyer on a developmental player as well to save salary space. Shawntae Spencer is taking up 3.1 mil in cap space that could be used in better ways. I expect next year he will be cut or traded if anyone would take him off our hands.
IMO, Offense is a much bigger area of need then CB. Use the 1st rounder on a speedy, sure handed WR that can blow the top off of defenses., Use the 2nd on another Big Run stopping Outside Linebacker and let 2.8 mil leave by way of Parys Harrelson’s contract.
This
Rogers is solid and should be back.
Brown is mainly hated for the failures of the past. He was solid this year and many of the plays people want to say he was “burned on” were plays where he was expecting safety help over the top and never got it.
Culliver we have to remember has very little experience at CB, and has never played anything close to an 18 game season. He wore down as the season went on.
Brock is actually 3 days younger than Culliver, and has lots of room to grow. The play everyone wanted to crucify him for last night was the exact same play that Eli “burned” Brown on in the Week 10 matchup. Off man coverage, receiver took the inside release, the safety help has to come up and make the play on the skinny post. Both games, we had Reggie Smith in at safety and Eli didn’t hesitate to make that throw.
Spencer is gone, but I don’t see the need at linebacker for that high a pick. We can afford to take a guy lower that we can coach up and bulk up — because he doesn’t have a spot in our nickel packages with Aldon going to a 3 down player next year.

How about vice versa if there is a lineman that fits our scheme better
That will still be there in the second?
Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.
Maybe.
I think a first round RT is more likely to be able to come in and start right away. I have no idea who’s available when in this draft, how the talent level stacks out, and I’m not opposed to getting a WR.
But I do think WRs are much riskier draft picks, and I think that upgrading the right side of our line will make the WRs we do have look better.
Our WR production was poor this year not just because of drops and injuries, but because our QB spent too much time running for his life.
Sadly I don't see a 1st round RT
This is one of the worst tackle classes in the last decade. If it wasn’t for the early entrants Kalil, Martin, and Reiff there wouldn’t be a single one worth a 1st round grade — and that’s for blindside protectors. You want to start talking right tackles and you can go even lower (3rd, 4th, 5th) into the draft and still be in the best this crappy year has to offer. Either way, you aren’t getting a starter significantly different (unless worse) than Davis.
If I go lineman in the second, I’m going guard. We seem to run best when we run Power and Counter O and there are very few guards who fit that “Pull and go Iupati on a LB” bill this draft. Most of the guards this draft aren’t experienced technicians at the position and are very poor in space because they are just really big tackles that don’t have a chance staying there at the next level. Familiar, right?

Even more sadly
Safety is worse. All the juniors that could have saved the class went back.

WR, OL, S, OLB

Big WR with speed that requires a double team and allows Crabtree to be the #2.
A CB to compete with Brown and Culliver; you can never have too many good cover guys.
Inside pass rusher for the nickel defense; you can never have too many pass rushers.
Fast Sproles-like RB who can also be the backup kick returner.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

I agree aside from the inside rusher in the Nickel. McDonald and Smith are fine, we need another DE that can play in the Nickel.
"What the hell are you mixing in that look-aid"
Plus we need someone the coaches trust so that Smith & McDonald can play a few less snaps next season

I think Hunter is more than that
He’s in line to be the starter, and is certainly worthy of near equal carries as Gore (which would extend Gore’s career). I’m thinking more Sproles, Jamaal Charles, Javid Best. They only get five touches per game but being on the field causes the defense to adjust. They can also be used in trick plays, are your third RB, and return kicks as a primary or back up job.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.

WR and FS are the biggest needs, in my opinion
Wide receiver is pretty obvious. We need another playmaker on this offense, as simple as that.
We also should get a free safety, in case we do not resign Goldson, and if we do resign him I’d like to know the team has a more adequate backup than Reggie Smith.
How can you possibly think that CB and OLB are bigger needs than OL?
Our corners played well this year. Aldon is probably stepping into the OLB starters role next year, and Brooks is fine on the other side.
Meanwhile, the right side of our OL was a sieve. Our offensive line was well below average in sacks, and had a worse-than-average percentage of run plays stopped for a loss or no gain.
The classic response is
“We’ve already spent top picks on O-line”
Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.
And they didn't work out.
Top draft picks should be used to address areas of weakness.
But of course I don’t need to tell you that Davis shows reasonable signs of never being able to be a good tackle at the pro level. :)
Not mine...
If we need to spend more high picks for OL, then that’s fine. I just don’t think this year is the time where it’s the most pressing need.
by 9thevolution on Jan 26, 2012 10:05 AM PST up reply actions
Our o-line has been bottom 10 in the league in sacks and QB hits the past 2 years.
Bottom half in rush yards per attempt this year. Now is better than ever if the opportunity presents itself.
Two reasons
In the current NFL, pass rushers and CBs are the priority. We have no depth behind Aldon and Amad (the latter of whom is a FA) so if either where to miss games from injury, or just need to be given a break so that they and Justin don’t have to play so many snaps, we have no one to pick up the slack. Next, one more CB, to keep up the competition with Brown and Culliver, is not a bad thing, especially if they could double as a nickel safety and take Reggie Smith’s spot.
As for OL, an attempt to upgrage RG should happen but don’t you think it likely that JH and Baalke may already the answer on the roster in the two rookies? They will certainly be ahead of anyone we draft, as we can all recall how our two rookie lineman struggled in their rookie season.
You gotta bring ass to get ass.
We dat team that beat them Saints!
The issue isn’t RG, it’s RT. (I have a sneaking suspicious we may have our RG of the future, but he’s playing RT).
In the case of OLB or CB, you’re talking about upgrading a position that is already strong because of depth concerns.
WIth RG, you have the same depth concerns (Alex Boone is our backup tackle, and, oh yeah, we have no quality backup guard – Rachal was the backup guard) with the added issue of not having a quality starter to begin with.
So it seems to me that the “depth” argument applies equally well to the OL, with the difference being that our starters at that position are inadequate, whereas in the defensive backfield are starters are adequate or good. Of course, we could lose guys to free agency but I actually don’t think you’re going to see a lot of guys jumping ship, unless the other team way overpays.
I of course agree on Davis
I just don’t think this coaching staff will move him to guard. We pull our guards too much and Davis is a straight ahead power guy. I think the best we can realistically hope for is using a strongside TE to chip any speed we face and bringing in a tackle who can help Davis like Snyder does but can also grade a road when we need those tough yards.

Errr... "bringing in a guard who can help Davis like Snyder does"

Our secondary isn't exactly strong...
They played very well this year, but we also have Rogers hitting FA this year. If Culliver can not start, or rather, if he can’t match that level of play, our starting secondary is now weaker. Brown played very well, but we get no guarantees that he maintains that; especially if our pass rush declines. Then with Culliver starting, our depth takes a decline. By taking a CB and OLB higher in the draft, we improve the pass rush (which greatly helps the current secondary) and then we add another CB who can either challenge to start or play nickel (and we do play nickel frequently).
These picks are means to keep our defense at the top of the league, because as the Giants will prove next week (which we should be proving), defense still wins championships.
by 9thevolution on Jan 26, 2012 10:19 AM PST up reply actions
Put simply....
That is where we need players. As of March when FA opens, we have 2…… TWO OLBs on this team. Brooks is a FA and there’s no guarantee he returns to the team. Harrelson only has one year left on his contract also. As for CB, it is a passing league and prolific passing offenses are beginning to spring up all over the place. We also have 4 players from our secondary heading to FA; two starters and two depth players. No guarantees that they come back or that we find better depth than what we are losing.
As for the OL, they played better as the year progressed; that includes Davis who is the biggest weakness. Staley, while not or ever will be an All-Pro, had the best year of his career. A few mishaps that he shouldn’t be making, but he’s not going anywhere. Iupati is the same story as Staley. Goodwin is a decent stop-gap for now, and despite how great a 1st round C would be, it’s not necessary; Heitmann, who was great, was a 7th rounder.
As for the right side, I’m betting Snyder returns and we’ll bring in more competition through FA or draft, plus Kilgore who the team likes enough to roster him all year; which says something. As for Davis, he did get better as the year progressed and he’s very young. He’ll get another year at least unless he falls on his face; in which case the team will put Boone in at RT, even if he projects as a LT.
I’ll also point out that nearly half of our sacks came in 3 games. That is based in the coaches not being to scheme around the zone blitz, not the players entirely. They will correct that next year.
by 9thevolution on Jan 26, 2012 10:03 AM PST up reply actions
The offensive line did not get better as the year progressed.
They were bad the second half of the year. Pass protection deteriorated and run-blocking got progressively worse. Played awful against the Saints then for some reason decided to pay decent considering we were up against the Giants front 4, but still gave up too much pressure.
