Jim Harbaugh's Mighty Men Rally Around Kyle Williams

All season long, Jim Harbaugh has espoused the mantra that the 49ers are loaded up with "mighty men." That has been an oft-repeated slogan throughout the season, primarily due to the players strong performances on the field in getting some pretty huge wins.

However, last night we saw just how mighty these men are as they circled the wagons around wide receiver Kyle Williams. Although Williams' experienced a truly awful evening, his teammates rallied around him after the game with numerous shows of support on twitter and with the media. While it might actually be easy to roll off a few lines about supporting him and this and that, given the nature of this team I don't think there is any BS with these responses.

Williams made some serious strides in his second season and seemed on his way towards making a bit of a leap heading into year three. Unfortunately this performance will hang over his head for the foreseeable future. People have screamed for him to be cut. People have made obscene death threats. It has gotten out of hand on twitter over a guy who 24 hours ago was considered a potentially big part of the 49ers receiving future.

Anger and emotion are to be expected following the performance we saw yesterday. However, as we move forward into the offseason and look ahead to the 2012 season, let's hope Kyle is able to move past this and come back in a big way in 2012. While he had some significant struggles yesterday, he still has some serious skills that could turn him into one heck of a receiving weapon. A full offseason with this playbook could get things going well in the right direction.

Williams isn't the lone scapegoat

Yeah he had a couple of fumbles, but the difference was still our inability to convert on 3rd down…we were what… 1 for 13 or 14? with our single conversion being the last play in regulation?? If we convert on 3rd and 5 from the 10, we would have been able to punch in 6 and win the game in regulation.

This team needs assistance at the receiver position… 1 catch for 3 yards from all of your receivers is unacceptable.

The way we were running the ball, I was disappointed to see us come out throwing in overtime.

Oh well, terrific season guys, it was a terrific ride and looking forward to next year. Hopefully we avoid any kind of sophmore slump under Harbaugh. Go Niners Go!!

Forgot to add...

I was surprised to not see many screen passes to the RB"s, or heck especially the WR’s, get them involved early in the game, let Williams and Crabtree get some touches.

I never realized how athletic A.Smith was, the couple or running plays that Roman had thrown in there were awesome…. I also like the idea of rolling him out of the pocket, but Smith needs to work on throwing the ball on the run, in stride, where his feet aren’t planted…. the one hoppers and ankle passes to Crabtree in particular were plentiful.

Really excited for next season, and a healthy Josh Morgan at the wideout position… Crabs can still be a decent #2 WR, and I like Williams as a slot receiver. A possession receiver that helps us pick up those 3rd and 8’s would be nice too.

The Defense Let Down a Tiny Bit at the Very End

If they kick the field goal from where the fumble was recovered it was not a gimme in the swirling wind and rain. They had success running into comfortable position. That surprised me.

More than takes away from the game...

It’s an affront to the team and all of their fans. It’s a deranged reaction that speaks of serious mental problems.

Anyway, thanks for chiming in Giants Fan. Good luck in a couple weeks. Yes, good defense but real issues at receiver. Good running game can’t get on track when there’s NO threat on the outside – so the entire offense bogs down.

This season is not a failure

This season has been a smashing success, simply because all of our expectations were tremendously exceeded.

NEXT year, in my opinion, will be a failure if we don’t take the next step and get to the Super Bowl. We have a great team that is only going to get better during the offseason. Now we know what we can do and how far we can go.

Time to take the next step.

Anybody calling for Williams to be cut, and especially those making death threats

Need to grow up. Seriously.

It sucks, but it’s a game. We’ll be back in the thick of things next year, and the years that follow. I hope Kyle is a part of this team next year, and continues to improve.

Another draft and free agency, coupled with an actual offseason, will prove huge for the Niners.

Here’s to a great season, and a better future. Go Niners. Now and forever.

Exactly. Williams helped get the team to this point

And could be a bigger part of this team next year.

He stepped up big time when Morgan went down and Edwards was constantly hurt and then cut. Irrational for people to call for his pink slip and especially for anyone making death threats. He does not deserve that.

Yeah, I have nothing against Williams, sure you’re ticked off when the play happens, but it’s just a crappy way to lose a football game.

The post game comments from a bunch of media praising Eli Manning this and that….are you kidding me, were they watching the same 2nd half that we were watching? Sure Eli threw for over 300 yards… but he also threw the ball almost 60 times only completing 55% of his passes or so. We didn’t lose because of Eli.

Terrific 2nd half adjustment by the D to shutdown Cruz.

If Brown doesn’t get knocked out of the game, does Manningham still catch that touchdown?

by ninerspride on Jan 23, 2012 8:42 AM PST up reply actions

Great throw and great catch

But the safety should’ve had the inside on that route, since Brock was trailing on the outside.

Still, defense isn’t even in that position in the first place without that muffed punt. The defense in the 2nd half was just ridiculous. The defense did its job. Our offense and special teams did not.

Like I said either you get the joke or you don’t. The original context was from a movie directed toward Dan Marino. Calling for the death of him for something he didn’t do. Not saying Kyle is innocent, just saying that the people saying he needs to die is too emotional and off base. Either you get it or you don’t. Not going to second guess what happened. Giants were, overall, the better team last night. Woulda, coulda, shoulda’s won’t make things better.

Focus on getting key guys re-signed, sign impact free agents and get another crop of players in the draft, and this team will be feared by all next year.

This was a huge missed opportunity. I realize people want to look at next year, because this team looks ready to stay on top. But BAL thought the same thing 12 (!) years ago, and they have never been back.

Season to season variation is completely unpredictable, Playoff team turnover year to year is 50%. And it is so hard to get to the Superbowl. We had a golden opportunity, and it got fumbled away.

Keep getting into the playoffs and probably get one shot at the SuperBowl.

Sure

Definitely a missed opportunity, but I think the 49ers are a playoff team for certain in the coming years. I don’t think our tougher schedule/division will stop us from getting a couple more chances over the next few years.

Our talent level will increase as this front office gets another draft and another offseason. We won a lot of close games this year. Next year, I think we win more blowouts.

Tongue in cheek or not...

Your right and truth hurts. As anemic as our offense was they didn’t cough up points on turnovers to the Giants like Williams did x2’s!

As much as our offense struggled

We could have won if he didn’t let the ball hit his knee and didn’t fumble in OT. The ball off his knee led to a touchdown for the lead and the fumble was the FG in OT. We can point fingers at whoever we want, but in the end those 2 plays led to a total of 10 points. If we didn’t fumbe and at least had a chance to punt, the game may have ended differently.

Not to kick a guy when he is down, but this is probably the only time I wouldn’t switch places with a pro athlete.

So many great WRs in the league at the moment.

More talent at WR than ever before in the league, just go get one in FA. Bowe is a brilliant number one, plenty of other options too – even Lloyd is a huge upgrade… a HUGE upgrade.

There are so many out there that it makes sense to grab one or two of them. Going to the NFC championship game could help in luring a couple of them our way.

Realize

That the game was a defensive struggle, in the second half the Giants didn’t convert on something like 13 straight 3rd downs. A turnover was what was going to change the game. We got screwed out of the one we created, and then they created a couple which won them the game.

Anger aside, that comment from SLam's blog...

…posted by cybermaldonado yesterday convinced me Kyle Williams can’t be trusted with the football. For those who missed it, here’s what commenter said back when Williams was originally drafted:

Get ready to have your hearts in your throat whenever Williams is on the field, Niner fans. This dude is so unpredictable and takes crazy chances with the ball. He lacks concentration and drops and fumbles more passes and punt returns in important situations than anyone I’ve ever seen. In fact his very last play of his ASU career was a fumbled punt return in the biggest game of the year vs our rival Univ of AZ. The score was tied just a minute or so on the clock. U of A was punting. Everyone’s thinking o.t.. All he had to do was catch the ball and take a knee or run it a few yards. But no, he wanted to be a hero and already had his mind running up the field before he even caught the ball. It went right through his hands, bounced off his leg and U of A recovered it. They went on to score a FG. Game & season over! Fans left stunned! Williams is very inconsistent. It doesn’t matter if he runs a 4 flat you got to have the ball in your hands first! He can go from hero to zero in 4.3 too.

i tend to agree. I dont see why he is such an irreplaceable player. He is a slot reciever who clearly has no value on special teams. He will never be more than a slot reciever, and very very few slot recievers are irreplaceable. There are not that many Wes Welkers in the history of the game.

by uspsuperman on Jan 23, 2012 8:36 AM PST up reply actions

weaknesses get exploited in the NFL

during the game yesterday, I was thinking that Williams scares the shit out of me on his returns. He just didn’t seem to know what he was doing back there and was gonna F up eventually, and of course, that’s what cost us the game. He dove for one punt. he made fair catches with tons of open field in front of him. then he didn’t get away from the ball on the muff and of course fumbled the game away at the end. I can’t believe we didn’t have any better option. I mean, not having any return man would be a better option. It was Arnaz Battle all over again. ugh.

It is true

That he kept fair-catching punts where the nearest defender was 10+ yards away. It was frustrating. And that diving catch of a punt was a clear warning sign.

Obviously, this guy doesn’t have whatever it is that it takes to be a successful returner. He has the speed and the moves, but those plusses are not outweighed by the minuses. Ball security and field smarts are WAY more important than speed and moves. Even if he’d fair caught every punt, that would’ve been better than those 2 devastating turnovers.

Kid might have a future as a wide receiver, but his career as a returner should be over.

I would agree with this

We simply did not play well enough to win. If one or two things had gone our way, we could’ve won (the early whistle on the fumble we caused, the obvious KW turnovers), but we didn’t make the plays, plain and simple.

In truth, the 49ers D is elite and will give us a chance in every game. The offense has to up its game and improve so that the difference between winning and losing is not so thin.

I think we’ll be better offensively next year and we’ll have less of these field goal margin, heart attack games and more 10 and 20 point wins.

Agree with this post, and before I read through the comments I want to say

I was ready to lay blame on Kyle too, after those awful punt returns, and it’s so easy to try to blame it on individuals. But then I remembered that this coaching regime isn’t about finger pointing and throwing people under the bus. That was how things used to be in the locker room, but not this year. Kyle will be held accountable for his mistakes, as will everyone else. (Coaches included.)

I’m still so mad at those mistakes, and how we lost (and we definitely lost the game ourselves). But I won’t participate in the torch-wielding mob any more.

This Is On Seeley

To me, the bigger culprit is Brad Seeley. The most important thing for a coach to do is put his players in a position to succeed. Brad Seeley failed at that miserably. He kept putting Williams out there and it was obvious to everyone in the stadium other than Seeley(were you paying attention?) that Williams had zero confidence in returning punts. He put Williams out there to fail. There is no worse thing that a coach can do to a player. Kendall Hunter was a good punt returner at Oklahoma St and was having a nice game. So Seeley had another option and choked big time. I hope he is having many sleepeless nights. Of course if anyone was looking at him for a head coaching job, that is out the window. When you choke the most important duty of your career, you certainly are not head coaching material.

He did a very find job up until the most important game of his life.
