Brad Seely Scheduled To Interview For Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Job
The close of the 49ers season opens the door for coaches to interview for other positions around the league and it is starting to heat up. FOX Sports is reporting that 49ers special teams coordinator and assistant head coach Brad Seely is going to interview with the Indianapolis Colts for their head coach position. The Colts fired Jim Caldwell and their GM after a 2-14 disaster of a season.
Seely actually began his coaching career with the Colts in 1989 as their special teams/tight ends coach until 1993. He has spent most of his NFL coaching career as a special teams coach, with some offensive line coach experience at the college level. 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has indicated several times that Seely is a guy he leans on for advice.
Seely has received quite a bit of praise for his work as a special teams coach. While the 49ers did suffer the cruel irony of special teams costing them the NFC Championship Game, the unit was otherwise stellar all season long.
The folks at Stampede Blue have the head coach search covered so keep an eye out for more updates from them. Of course, we will also have info as it becomes available. More importantly, if you want to win tickets to the Super Bowl, tweet your prediction for the next Colts head coach to @jimirsay. Personally I think they should cancel the Super Bowl this year, but I'm guessing the NFL will choose otherwise.

Really hope we can keep our coaching structure intact.

Coaches leave, players leave
It’s for FO and HC to make sure they get the next best player or coach available. Only when that works do we know that a successful system is in place. Harbaugh will need to look for young talent to replenish his coaching staff. I have no doubt he’ll succeed.
Correct
It’s only a matter of time before the vultures will pick away at our successful coaching staff. It happens to every successful program. The only two I would consider completely irreplaceable are Coach Harbaugh and Coach Fangio. Give those two whatever they want. Losing any other coach will sting, but I’m confident we’ll be ok. Losing either of those two would be truly damaging.
I actually think we could lose Fangio...
…and be just fine. I think our stellar defense was primarily the result of talent, not scheme.
Don't know about that.....
We had a pretty talented defense last year, but Manusky found a way to screw it up……
Scheme matters. Fangio is pretty creative with his coverages because we are so good rushing with four. He was able to mask our secondary (biggest weakness on D) as a result.

I disagree
I think Fangio had alot to do with it but I think his scheme of only rush 4 and drop 7 could have even been better. Bring a little more pressure. Help out the secondary a little more. The difference is that Fangio had Rogers Whitner Aldon and improved McDonald Bowman Goldson and Brown to work with that Manusky didnt.
Also, as I recall...
…Florida Danny did an analysis of Fangio’s career suggesting his success has been dependent upon talent.
I have confidence in our ability to replace anyone but Seely...
…who had repeatedly shown his coaching contributions transcend the system.
I like Seely but he is not irreplaceable
I’d like to point out that Seely / Harbaugh is responsible for the loss on Sunday, just as they have been responsible for the wins thus season.
I heard on KNBR this morning Tim Ryan apparently commented well before the game that Kyle Wllliams had a "deer in a headlight" look about him. If a TV analyst can sense that a situation may be too big for a player, rest assured that the Giants will have come to the same conclusion from their scouting, irrespective of the reason for Williams’ inability to deal with the moment. they would go after him.
Kyle Williams was making basic mistakes: hanging around the ball after letting the ball bounce, carrying the ball in the right hand when running along the left side of the field when he was stripped, diving forward to make a catch with no chance of return and when he is about to be tackled.
So why did Harbaugh and Brad Seely have Williams fielding punts instead of Kendall Hunter or Delanie Walker or even Chris Culliver, who in my opinion are more reliable catchers? Because Williams gave them a better chance of getting 10-15 more yards per catch than the others. Recall that right after the muffed punt, Williams returned the punt for 44 yards that led to a field goal.
You live by the sword you die by the sword. Niners chose to win with special teams throughout the season. They chose not to make an exception when Ginn was injured and a backup punter returner was in action, and the team was 60 minutes from a SuperBowl.
The old dog of war Coughlin understood the situation better. He told his receivers and kick/punt returners not to take chances and hit the turf before being tackled. Niners coaches made no such adjustments. Fans who are fools blame the individual players.

All true...
…but it one game doesn’t change the fact that Seely turned around our special teams. Nor does it make a guy like Seely any easier to replace.
My point is there are many ways to win by different coaches, and some winning ways may end in losing. As you yourself mention above in the context of Fangio, i’s the personnel that matters most. Seely is a very good coach, but he has great success with the Niners primarily because of superior talent. The key is to have a competent coach available who is willing to work for Harbaugh and Baalke.

Fangio to Seely...
…is an apples-to-oranges comparison. There’s no evidence I’m aware of that Seely’s success is the result of talent. From what I understand, he’s been consistently successful at turning teams around wherever he’s gone. This is in contrast to Fangio, whose track record is a bit spotty, at least according to Florida Danny.
Brad Seely Is A Champion !!!
Thank you SIR BRAD SEELY for all you have done for the 49ers. l am sorry that you are not used to players like Kyle Williams fumbling twice in a Championship Game. We know you will do well as you have the Midas Touch, and you have our blessings at INDIANA !!!!
Thank you sir !!!
He hasn't left yet!
And I hope he doesn’t :(
Wasn't Greg Roman also rumored to be a candidate in Indy?
That could be awkward if they both are.

From the news reports
Sounds like everybody and his dog is being interviewed by the Colts. Seely or any other coordinator will find a better position eventually, which is just how things work in the NFL. Hopefully though, we’ll have one more year with everyone intact.
I'm still thinking they go with Jim Tressel for Indy's HC gig...

coaching lost game/trade two players for a good one.
Should not have been playing (williams) deer look, lost in the fog look, etc.
bad offense calling late in the game. 18 seconds off the clock with just three plays. DUMB
not enough coaching on position by Seely. TRADE WILLIAMS, CRABTREE FOR real wide receiver. williams, too small, crabtree is a bust, just wait and see.

No, no and no.

Do you guys think...
That the niners’ special teams performance will be significantly influenced by this next season?

seely
your only as good as your last game. bad coaching by him on williams responsibility.
I saw no body talking to williams after the diving catch on one punt, and no one talking to him on the “o did it hit my leg, i don’t know maybe, maybe not hummm” play. really stupid.

Sure about that?
Remember, the cameras weren’t on him the whole time…
By that token, you probably think Mike McCarthy should be fired in GB. Or John Harbaugh in Baltimore. Or Sean Payton in NO. Maybe Philip Rivers should have been cut after that fumble in Kansas City.
Gotta love the knee-jerk reactions you see around here. One bad special teams game, and you guys want to ride Seely out of town on a rail. What a freaking joke.
we don't blame Seely
we blame…some1 else

You didn't see anyone talking to Kyle because, I don't know...
The cameras weren’t on him!
