Cosell Talks: For Alex Smith, What a Difference a Week Made
Greg Cosell is one of the guys I respect the most. Knows his film.
Writes about Alex Smith's performance in the NFC Championship Game. Definitely worth a read.

OMG Crabtree didn't step up and is slow and cant get separation...oh wait
Michael Crabtree ran a sail route (kind of a flattened corner route). He was wide open. Smith, with no pressure in the pocket, did not pull the trigger.
Interesting take on the game.. Especially coming from who it does..
"You have to reinvent yourself each year, ... What helped us was that there was some turnover each year." Bill Walsh...
Here's my thing...
If Cosell sees it, rest assured that Harbaugh and his staff sees the same thing when they look at the tape. If Harbaugh feels he can work w/ Smith and continue to improve his decision making and willingness to take shots, then he’ll roll w/ him. However, if he doesn’t feel Alex is up to ALL the demands of playing QB in the NFL, then he’ll make sure he starts a QB that can handle the position.
The Harbaugh-Smith relationship, though solid, isn’t a Cinderella story. Harbaugh isn’t going to be sentimental and he’ll start players that give the team the best chance to win. There’s nothing that says Alex is the 49ers QB indefinitely. He’ll be back, I’m sure, but Harbaugh is going to make him work and keep up the pressure in terms of competition. For all the fluff written about Harbaugh and Smith, it all comes down to WINNING and the TEAM. I trust Harbaugh to make the right decisions on Alex and the rest of the roster.

We have a great coaching staff...
We just have to trust that they will continue to execute their plan and get the right players in the right positions to continue to improve. Whether that means Alex at QB or someone else, time will tell. They have the tape, they know and work w/ the players, and they know their various strengths and weaknesses. I’m still pissed about losing to an inferior Giants team, but I’m thankful that the 49ers finally have positive momentum, a plan, and more than competent people leading the team. Every year might not be 13-3, but the 49ers are back!

Alex QB'd the team to the NFC championship game the same way he did the whole season
there are many throws that Alex doesnt make, and if you followed the Niners for his whole career, it’s something Alex has done every game. He will always make the safe throw, he will always look for his checkdown if he feels its the safest throw.
I’m hoping Harbaugh works with Alex, and makes him a more complete QB in terms of those “stick throws” Cosell is talking about. Just PULL THE TRIGGER ALEX!

I wounder how much venom
…would be sent Alex’s way if he threw 2 picks in the NFC Championship game?
I know.
All the morons on this page are yaking about him despite him throwing for 200some 2 TDs and no Ints… and having no throws that were potential Ints. Eli threw 2 balls that should have been picked… and the difference in the game still came down to 2 Special Teams turnovers inside the 30.
Gimme 1 round!
