Free Agent WRs to target
I took a look at a list of impending free agents and wanted to know who the community thinks we should target to upgrade the WR position. I think we can easily retain Josh Morgan (he was our leading receiver at the time of his injury) and Ted Ginn (now we all know how important he was this past year), but we should try to bring in two more WR that can really play. I want to see those two TE, three WR plays - someone will be wide open for Alex.
You can find the list below, but a few targets stand out to me as being good options and acquirable:
Pierre Garcon (assuming they can't keep both Wayne and Garson)

Have to draft a WR
Signing one is never as effective.

Agree
I think there are enough good WR’s on the market for the Niners to sign at least one more in addition to Morgan.
ehh, don't really agree
It’s the system guys and players seen to have “breakout potential” that burn teams in FA.
If you go after a proven player with physical talent who’s not over the hill, it’s a decent gamble. Better odds than the draft at least.
His name is Ydwin, your argument is invalid.

If you could get DeSean Jackson's head screwed on right
He would be a nice signing, the Defense would have to respect the deep ball when he is playing, he would give Vernon Davis all types of space underneath.

He also wants way too much money for what he is worth
the Eagles offered him a very good contract offer which is probably overpaying him and he turned it down because he thinks he’s worth top 5 receiver money. He’s not.
Are you serious?
The Eagles may have offered him a fairly good contract, HOWEVER…..it was only AFTER they had overpaid for that roster they put together this season. And of all the receivers on that roster, the only one any team respects is HIM. So, he was plenty peeved at being snubbed. He’s only led the Eagles in recetions, yds after catch, and receiving td’s the past 2 seasons! So, he’d be worth it. A W/O that can stretch the D and have to respect his down field threat. He might even be able to ressurect Crabs from his doldroms of underacheiving.
K.C.Edwards -AKA- "THE" DarkkStarr
Yes absolutely
If for no other reason, Jeremy Maclin is overall a better receiver. Health issues (solved) and injuries (likely due to missing training time due to the health issues) kept Maclin’s numbers down but everyone knows he’s the Eagles top receiver.
MeSean also killed his value last season
by coming up extremely small in a contract year and acting like a diva about it.
Small....really? Here's the low down....
58 rec.
961 yds
4 td’s
15 plays of 20+ yds.
Most of his numbers have him in 1st or 2nd place on his team.
Better than all but 1 receiver on our team in overall numbers than anyone else on our team right now.
’Nuff said.
K.C.Edwards -AKA- "THE" DarkkStarr
Too short...I thought everyone wanted a taller WR
DeSean is only 5-10 – and that’s his listed height. Actual height might be shorter.
Plus, his production has been on the decline – both in receiving and returns.
As has Ginn's....but....
When the games on the line, he has come up bigger than any other receiver on the Eagle’s roster. One of the most heavily rotated scenes in the past 2 seasons was Desean’s GAME WINNING punt return against the Giants when NY had the game all but wrapped up. Does anyone remember the game against the Redskins vaunted defense on Monday night? I do. First play from the 2 yd line, Vick rolls left, passes to the right, DESEAN WIDE OPEN for an easy 6! That’s the type of play he’s given the Eagles and they don’t want to pay HIM before they (over) pay a corner from the Raiders? Come on man!

doesn't that spot belong to Kyle Williams?
too soon??
Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Kaepernick to be super so soon.
Kyle Williams is a "until we get someone better" kind of player
Not saying he sucks… Not at all. But you don’t worry about “his spot”.
He’s good enough, but you’re ALWAYS trying to upgrade from a guy like him.

I'm sorry, but it's a little ridiculous that you are already labeling him as just an ok player and putting a ceiling on him after what he showed this season.
He was injured his rookie season, so this was his first display as a pro. He showed great speed, explosion, and is very physical. I think the kid can be a quality starter, and I don’t know what gives you the right to say that he won’t be a special player and saying that you try to upgrade a “guy like him” What other “guys like him” are you referring to?

Anybody else who beats out his spot thats who?
He only got playing time because Morgan got hurt and Edwards didn’t pan out. Merlin said he was OK, and that really sums him up. I don’t get where you see he could be a “quality starter” from. To me that means a #1/#2 wide receiver on a team that defenses have to account for, and Kyle is no where near that ‘yet’. Notice I said yet as that could change but you don’t stop bringing in other guys just cause he showed you a little something. Make him keep fighting for it and earn it.
He caught 20 balls... Whoopee.
Yeah, he had some flashes and he’ll be back… But he didn’t do anything that shows he’s more than an “okay” player. He only got 20 balls ’cause Morgan and Braylon were hurt…
Guys like him? There are a zillion good athletes playing WR around the NFL than caught 20 balls… What’s so special about Kyle Williams? What’s he done to warrant “he could be a starter” talk, other than the fact that theoretically he IS in the NFL and could end up being one IF he improves.

he barely made the team this season. he probably will have to fight for a spot next year. of course, having a year in the system will benefit him.

Free agency
Robert Meachem – A receiver known for big games and games where he can’t be found. If there was not so much depth at wide receiver he would probably be a bigger name. He’s fast enough, his route running and skills are great. Problems can be alligator arms at times, once he has the ball though he can be a force and make people miss in open field tackles. No questions either in work ethic and off field issues. 27 years old, 6’2 , 210.
Vincent Jackson- Personally i’m not a fan but the man’s work ethic and what he does on the field cannot be argued. If we want to give our qb a huge target he can’t miss, with the only problem could be the guy popping the ball by grabbing it to tightly, Vjax is the man. He is big can seperate well off the man-press coverage and obviously is just a huge big target who can go up and fight for the ball including grabbing some of those high throws Smith is known to throw. ( assuming we resign Alex)
Danny amendola/ Josh morgan I’m writing these two together because they are one in the same. Both go over the middle, Danny Amendola is a little quicker in the hips, Josh Morgan is going to seperate a little better after the catch. I would prefer Morgan because he is already a niner in my mind but I like what both could bring to the team.
Mike Wallace- Mike Wallace is extremely fast but can still win those possession fights. I know he is restricted but with some talk going around in Pittsburgh there is always possibility he could see free agency, if that happened I would love to see the niners all over him. He’s 25 years old and could grow with the franchise if we could get him.
Too pricey
I think Meachem, Amendola, and Wallace will re-sign with their respective teams. Vincent will probably leave SD (and possibly they don’t want him back either), but will be way too pricey. I hope Morgan re-sign and is healed. I really like Dwayne Bowe…if he can get those kinds of stats (81rec, 1100yds, 5TDs) with Cassel, Palko and no running game, imagine what he’d do in this offense. Also one of the Indy receivers would be good. Anthony Gonzalez might be a sneaky steal if he’s healthy, but health is a concern and he’d fill the same role as Josh Morgan.
Bowe or Jackson are cool
I’m not sure any of those other guys are an upgrade over what’s already here. Not enough to pay for it at least.
Wallace is great but it would have to be a huge contract with 1st and 3rd draft choices going to the Steelers.

Don't like the "vibe" you get from the guy...
…but Vincent Jackson is a freaky talented guy for someone his size.
And he’s smart… (IQ smart, albeit not necessarily off-the-field-judgment smart)
Curious what Harbs/Baalke think of him.

I'd be in favor of VJax...
…his running feud was with A.J. Smith. I’m surprised he’d even consider staying in SD now that The Lord Of No Rings is going to be there for another year.
VJax is ridiculously talanted...

I wouldn't mind taking a run at Eddie Royal
he’s got speed. he’s caught 90+ passes in a season before and he can return kicks well. We wouldn’t need to keep Ginn around. he probably won’t want to hang around Denver as the #2/3 option in a Tebow led offense (I wouldn’t).

Of the elite options that are remotely realistic possibilities
I’d vote for Bowe. Unlike Garcon, I think he’s truly a talented WR who could make a QB better, rather than depend on a great quarterback to make him serviceable (if that makes sense).
Bowe or...
Jerricho Cotchery would be a solid pickup.
Colston...
I’m not crazy about Colston… I think his size is a great asset but I don’t know that he has breakaway speed. I think he’s great with Brees and on a team with other weapons that can stretch the field, but I doubt he would be as great with the Niners… My top pick would be Bowe… just on ability DeSean is definitely a great option and they wouldn’t need to re-sign Ginn, and Vincent Jackson would be a great option. I think any of those options would be great, but even if they can get a Meachem or someone like that, while re-signing Morgan, and then adding another WR in the draft, they could be solid next year.
plax anyone??
what are the jets interest in bringing plax back?? would he want to much money and too long of a contract?? if it were for 2-3 yrs on a decent deal he would be the perfect red zone target for our offense seeing as we tend to throw A LOT in the redzone as opposed to pounding the rock in the red zone…almost one series a game we would get in the redzone and throw 3 incompletions….some were on the receiver, some were on the qb….better hands than braylon and kind of fits what our FO likes to do in gettin players on the cheap for shorter contracts..
We need big, possession receivers with great hands
DeSean Jackson would be great for the return game and he has big play ability, but the Niners don’t need a speedy deep threat (not that they couldn’t use one). We need a receiver that can catch the inaccurate balls that Alex Smith throws with regularity (at times). Vernon Davis is our big play guy. If we could get a big receiver like Bowe or Colston who are also red zone threats to pair with Crabtree, who has great hands and is a great route runner, that would be a huge help to Alex Smith. With Davis as our big play guy, Crabtree as our possession guy, and a possession/red zone guy, we’d probably be a top-10 offense. Having said that, we also need an upgrade at right guard to solidify our run blocking while allowing Smith the time he needs to get the ball out.

Everyone on the Dwayne Bowe bandwagon
Must have missed (not heard about) the Steelers game this year where the Chiefs were down by 4 and Palko threw a strike down to the 20 with about 35 seconds left and Bowe thought he heard footsteps and didn’t even try to catch the ball. He pulled his arms back down and watched the ball sail right over his helmet into the arms of a Steeler safety. Game over.
Not saying the Chiefs would have won that game. But 1st and 10 from the 20 down by 4 gives them a pretty good shot if he catches that ball. If he tries and drops it, oh well it happens. But halfway making the effort to catch it, then making the conscious decision “no I won’t try to catch it” — that’s unforgivable.
Don’t want him at any price.

I don't mind bad plays
Mental lapses, errors of technique, it happens. Especially on our offensive squad of misfit toys.
But he raised his hands to catch the ball and then pulled them back down.
With the game on the line he CHOSE to give up on a play that puts his team in scoring range and give the Steelers the pick.
Don’t want him at any price.

They ran a poll over at arrowhead pride
http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2011/11/28/2592226/dwayne-bowe-catch-kansas-city-chiefs
60% felt he wasn’t to blame, and after watching a few replays I tend to agree that he didn’t screw up, it just looked real bad plus collinsworth ripping him
20/80 rule
Surprised more people didn’t want to believe the best about the hometown hero. That he only got 60% that felt he wasn’t to blame should tell you something.

That doesn't make any sense. If Chiefs fans really thought it was his fault,
and I know some that did, they would have been ripping him a new one. The fact the majority of the fanbase there was willing to defend him means a lot.
Though Niners Nation loves to defend guys like Crabtree and Anthony Davis, so maybe you have a point.
Yep, 80/20 rule.

Draft
Offense is still fragile, team dynamics would be best served picking up recievers in the draft.
One starting caliber WR in FA wouldn't murder what little offensive chemistry we have.
Unless it was DeSean Jackson.
No More Jets Castaways !
Please stop with the stupidity. No players from screwed up organizations. Rather use 2-3 draft picks on WRs then get more Antonio Bryant’s of the world !
