FREE AGENCY/TRADE, and DRAFT. CHECK THIS OUT!

With the kick in the pants ending to the season, I thought I would look positively into the future and think about the possible moves and acquisitions that the team can/will make.

After pondering about the serious needs of the team, it is more than obvious that the WR's need upgrading and after sundays loss we need a reliable punt/kick returner. Is this proud franchise now an attractive place for hot free agent markets? Is it the place that the top free agents go to win a championship? With the new team structure of coaches, management and player personel it makes me think that this is true. A brand new state of the art stadium is in the works along with some of the best up and coming talent in the league. Does this have the makings of the franchises 6th + championships? As a niner faithful I tend to agree with Roger Craig when he said that he feels this is a beginning of a dynasty.

Let's take a look at some free agents and moves that are needed to be made by the team.

FREE AGENCY/TRADE

WOULD HE MAKE A RETURN TO THE BAY AREA?

Mr. Bowe has a huge catching radius and would make Alex look even better than he has been as of late.

Dwayne-bowe-catch_medium

via www.wassapening.com

Don't tell me that we wouldn't improve with a player like this guy!

Peyton-manning-635x480_medium

Star-divide

DeSean Jackson -Personally I feel that DJack would give us a killer threat at wideout and as a return man. However, is he worth the potential off field problems? Or if he is winning titles will he be able to keep himself under control? Thats the multi million dollar question.

Dwayne Bowe - I feel we need this guy however the niners are not known for picking up big players in free agency with the exception of this year. Dwayne Bowe would be our Calvin Johnson, he would draw attention away from guys like Vernon Davis and Delanie Walker and we already know what kind of threats they can be. Also with Josh Morgan back I feel that would bring some stability to the WR group.

Bernard Berrian - This guy should be on the 49ers radar this offseason. He can put up the numbers and given the right system can be a very reliable wideout. It will be very interesting to see where he goes.

QUARTERBACK- I am all for re signing Alex Smith, I think he undoubtedly deserves another shot here after proving what he proved this year. However, does Niner Nation feel that he has proved himself as a contender for the title year in and year out. Because lets be honest, that is what we are looking for. I'm not doubting him anymore, I'm simply questioning his consistency to return the niners to where they got this year so they have a shot every year for a SB. Given the market and the fact that we have Kap, I think we stick with Alex and maybe learn to utilize Kap in other types of packages.

Either you are all for this idea or you are totally against it. I'm all for it, but obviously I feel Alex can get us back to contending. But be honest, if Peyton Manning came to SF do you really think that would hurt the team? Be honest. Peyton Manning is one of the best all time, undoubtedly he would be elite with Harbaugh, and he has at least 3 more good years in him despite the injury to his neck. I mean if Harbaugh can groom Andrew Luck into what he has become then just imagine Harbaugh working with Manning with him being who he already is. Peyton is looking for money, or for the south beach climate (even though SF is a lot nicer climate than Indy) he is looking for more rings, and now that his brother is playing for another one, I'm sure his fire is burning even stronger. What do you think Niner Nation, would it be a good idea? Is it now more of a likelihood than ever before? Here is Bleacher Report's take on this.

DRAFT

Kendall Wright of Baylor could fall to us in the late first round.

Now as far as the draft goes, I still think we need to draft another quarterback that can battle with kap and alex for the starting spot and so everyone pushes each other to improve. I said this last year and I'm going to say it again, Kellen Moore of Boise State is going to be a very good quarterback in the NFL. He is expected to be drafted in the 6th to 7th round which makes it very much a possibility that the Niners could draft him. I say if he still there late when we have a chance to grab him then we should jump at the chance. Watch the way he moves around in the pocket and still comes up with huge throws, something Alex doesn't do. Mark my words he will be very good.

Mohamed Sanu -Rutgers

Alshon Jeffery- South Carolina, this guy is possibly the best wideout in the draft in my opinion. He has the size and strength and goes and gets the ball at its highest point. MegaSHON!

More attractive than in recent years

…but California still has higher taxes than most states, and San Francisco isn’t the biggest market to build a brand-name for yourself

okay but this isn't the NBA

players usually just dont leave to create a super team or go to a team with the bigger market. They go where ever they find stability or a job opportunity. Otherwise during our losing seasons, why would VD and Patrick Willis sign extensions? Aaron Rodgers could of asked for a trade during the Farve years, and so on. The only thing players move is because they already made a name for themselves and want to play for a team that gives him the opportunity to win an SB.

I think we are an attractive franchise for free agents

Except wide receivers.

Who wants to come here and play in this inept passing offense with our quarterback situation? We would have to break the bank to make it attractive and I think that is a very bad idea.

Get the offense running, get our quarterback up to speed, whoever it ends up being, and then if we have failed so bad at developing young wide-outs that need some mercenary work at wide receiver then so be it.

Now it’s a waste.

I can see Harbaugh and Balke

Being very good salesmen when it comes to talking to free agents. The can tell potential WR free agents that they didn’t pass that much in the 2011 season because they didn’t have the personal or time to install the passing offense as much as they wanted. But, now that they have the off season and if the potential free agent WR signs with SF, they will become a pass heavy offense.

Remember when Bill Walsh signed Steve Young, he told Young that Montana was done and he was injured. And that Steve was most likely going to become the starter in a year or two, that’s why Steve signed with SF. Ends up that Walsh was telling half truths and Steve ended up being the back up for years until Montana was truly over the hill.

Only free agent I want is Manning, the only free agent that would want to join is Manning. This team won’t shell out the dough for an irrelevant position. (WR). Manning doesn’t need money, if still playing he wants a shot at a ring. 9ers are the best option for a Bowl, plus he could play his brother to get there. Manning will not be a Colt, and shouldn’t want to.

Considering how bad our WR corp was this last year,

it is most certainly relevant that we improve it in the offseason.

And keeping what we have and hoping Morgan comes back strong from a season ending injury isn’t improving.

I don't want Manning or Desean Jackson

Number 1, as good as Desean is he is a diva. He only plays well when HE wants to, not when Harbaugh wants him to.

Number 2, Peyton’s neck is way too much of a red flag. I see him being one bad hit away from being in a wheelchair. That line would have to protect him 100% on every play otherwise his career’s over. Hell, Polian said this morning he has no idea if or when Peyton will ever play again. And how much of a shell would he be if he did play?

3, Berrian is a piece of [site decorum] and a garbage receiver. Did nothing except drop balls and insult war veterans on Twitter.

4. Bowe is a solid guy and a team player. KC would be stupid to let him walk, so I don’t think it will happen. If they prove they ARE that dumb though SF should snap him up immediately.

The issue with Peyton:

Peyton runs the Peyton offense. That’s awesome if he’s healthy. On the other hand, with three neck surgeries in the past two years (IIRC) you’ve got to assume the backup is going to get a lot of time. And you can just seamlessly shift from Peyton to Alex and back – they’re very different QBs with very different strengths who need very different systems.

I like the idea of seeing what Harbaugh can do with a full offseason with Alex and Kaep. If Peyton were really cheap I’d be tempted, but he’s not going to be really cheap, and it’s essentially a one-season gamble which could set us back if the price is too high.

by Ronaldinho on Jan 25, 2012 10:48 AM PST reply actions

Exactly...

and it’s not just the possibility of a hit re-aggravating his neck, it’s a matter of him maybe not even being healthy to start with! He’s got weakness in his throwing arm still the injury/surgery may of damaged some nerves in his neck

Alshon Jeffrey looks like a beast!!

I say draft him and spend the money in free agency to get nicks or grubbs at RG. Our running game would be unstoppable and would give any QB time to pass it to Jeffrey, Crabtree, VD or Walker

Joe and Steve were under the same system for years... don't expect Kaepernick to be super so soon.

by bayboy on Jan 25, 2012 1:12 PM PST reply actions

Our QB had plenty of time, he missed reads or over threw balls or players dropped them due to the shock of it hitting their hands. (except for VD)

We’d have to trade up for Jeffrey, but I doubt we shell out FA lineman money.

I think one trip to the playoffs has made our fan base stupid....

Yes, the team needs to improve in a few areas on offense, but minus a few players, this is the same team that got us the NFC championship and nearly won it despite the inept offense during the game. Now, everyone wants to break the bank for FAs and trade away draft picks that are needed to improve the team. Does no one realize that the teams that remain competitive year in and out DO NOT do this.

Baalke and the FO was praised all year long by us for nailing the draft and now we want to dump picks and all of our cap space to buy a Super Bowl next year? In case you haven’t realized yet, this strategy hasn’t been successful since ‘94 when we did it. If you don’t believe me, just ask a ’Skins or Jets fan.

Necessary FAs will be brought back (Smith, Rogers, Goldson, Morgan, Snyder) and some low-end players will be brought in for depth. After that they will look to the draft to improve, and they will do just that; improve.

For those knocking Smith, he improved considerably this year and we will look for the same next year. If he regresses, believe me, Harbs will relegate him to clipboard duty and roll with Kaepernick to find out if we need to start preparing a plan B at QB. Remember the mantra, if the team isn’t getting better, it’s getting worse; and Harbaugh won’t allow that.

by 9thevolution on Jan 26, 2012 6:23 AM PST reply actions

Getting a starting caliber WR in FA won't hurt this team any.

We could very well have the money for it and the best option we have now isn’t even a #2 WR on plenty of NFL teams. It’s very possible we won’t draft a WR in the first round and we are in dire need of improvement there.

by Odekerk on Jan 26, 2012 8:43 AM PST up reply actions

who you calling stupid?

I know more about the game then you do and one thing I do know is that proven leaders (manning) and players with extreme skillsets (jackson) are players you have to have around. However, It doesnt take a genius to figure that out, so you should know that. Alex smith have improved but he is not a leader, he barely gets excited when he throws a 50 yd td pass. We need a skilled leader on the offensive squad.

So if a guy does backflips when he makes a long pass, he's a good player?

Let’s call up Troy Smith and get him under center. A guy doesn’t need to have an attitude like Philip Rivers to be good. Would you like Eli Manning on this team, because he shows very little emotion on big plays, but that doesn’t diminish him as a player. Yes, Peyton is better than Smith, but it’s a pipe dream and incredibly unrealistic. Even Peyton doesn’t go charging down field showboating like Brett Favre after a big play.

I did not make a personal attack and say you are stupid; it’s a general reference to a fan base who is making death threats to players, claiming we need to gut the roster and go trade away draft picks or spend big time FA money to have a chance at winning. We just made the playoffs for the first time in 10 years with a roster of players who was mostly overlooked. Everyone needs to take a step back and re-think the pre-season evaluations that had us selecting in the top 10 of the draft and having a shot at getting Luck, then think about how we were essentially one play away from the Super Bowl with even less than that overlooked roster due to injuries.

And to claim you know more about the game of football than I do is childish because you do not know me or my knowledge of the game. It’s like saying, “my dad can beat up your dad.”

HARBAUGH's OFFENSE?

Do you think that Alex Smith is your idea of fitting harbaugh’s offense? If we had a guy like peyton this past year we would have been 16-0 and in the super bowl. We won in spite of Alex not because of him. Josh Johnson and Andrew Luck were both groomed under harbaugh and don’t tell me that they are similar qb’s.

Saying Kellen Moore will be anything than a career back-up in the NFL

is laughable at best. He has a weak arm and only produced at Boise State because his WRs went up against community college teams and were wide open all the time.

DeSean Jackson is a one-trick pony who can only run streaks and has a mouth to go with it. He wants top money and is worth nowhere near as much as he thinks he is. Benard Berrian is washed up.

Peyton Manning will never come to SF and I just wish fans would stop talking about it. Harbaugh and Manning would never work out due to their huge egos and both wanting to have control of the offense.

What I would really like out of your players is for us to sign Dwyane Bowe and draft Sanu. This could push Crabtree as far back as #4 on the depth chart (if we get Morgan back and he hasn’t lost anything) and makes us actually have a respectable WR corp.

by Odekerk on Jan 26, 2012 8:39 AM PST reply actions

Getting a #1 WR would be a huge help...

and Bowe is definitely the best available, so I wouldn’t be opposed if Baalke sticks to his guns and doesn’t piss away all the cap dollars for one FA. We do have a lot of players that we definitely should be re-signing, so giving him a value and not breaking the bank would be fine.

I prefer Wright over Sanu personally, but either way would not get any complaints from me.

by 9thevolution on Jan 26, 2012 9:43 AM PST up reply actions

I don't agree...

I think he’ll be pricey if he doesn’t get the franchise tag. It’s the way the league works, the next FA will always get more than the previous one, so he will have a contract similar or higher to Fitzgerald/A. Johnson.

Also, if he and his agent are smart, they will sit back and wait until C. Johnson gets his contract and then roll from there. I don’t think Bowe will get as much, but with Johnson’s contract numbers out, he can say he’s the next best thing and inflate his own numbers more.

I just think he’s out of our price range; not that I’m hating or saying we don’t need him. It’s more likely we bring in some other FA (besides Morgan) who will be the #2 at best.

by 9thevolution on Jan 26, 2012 10:25 AM PST up reply actions

You're crazy, and he and his agent are crazy if they think they're getting a contract

similar to Fitz’s. Bowe hasn’t done anything in his career even remotely close to what Fitz accomplished when he got his deal. Fitz and Andre are top 3 WRs. Bowe is top 10, even then some people may not have him that high.

That is just how it goes. Some team who needs a WR will pay him top dollar. Lots of players are given contracts way over their value based on what they did in a contract year.
