2012 Senior Bowl Rosters, Coaches: NFL Draft Season Is Upon Us
The close of the 2011 NFL season for the 49ers means we will start switching gears and begin preparations for free agency and the draft. We'll have plenty of recap and review content over the coming weeks, but we'll also be looking ahead as the 49ers prepare to add new talent to the roster.
The road to the 2012 NFL Draft is officially underway and the next stop is the Senior Bowl coming to you from Mobile, Alabama this Saturday. The game will be observed by plenty of scouts and personnel executives, but the week of practice leading up to the game is the more significant part of the Senior Bowl. The players are put through numerous drills and prep periods by the two coaching staffs. The game provides some insight, but given the "pick-up nature" of the game the practices are likely to provide better information.
Later today I'll start getting some practice reports together to give us an idea of who is performing well and who is struggling. Are there any specific players you'd like updates on? I'll poke around for pertinent information in general, but if people want details on specific players or positions, give me a heads-up. In the meantime, here is a rundown of the Senior Bowl weigh-ins.
Just to head some of you off at the pass, Kellen Moore is one guy who appears to be struggling a bit this week. He is one of the bigger names in the game given his high profile at Boise State. The 49ers likely won't be drafting a quarterback, but if a guy like Moore falls far enough, maybe they take a look at him. I have nothing to indicate one way or the other, but it's worth considering.
I've posted the rosters after the jump. I would have had these out earlier, but getting over the weekend took a little longer than I anticipated and so it's now officially go-time for the offseason. The folks at Mocking The Draft should be your go-to site all week for the 2012 Senior Bowl. We'll have plenty of 49ers specific coverage, but they are all over everything else and can provide some great insight.

cap space
anyone know roughly how much cap space the niners have as of right now? I know it will change a lot depending on who they decide to franchise, resign, release, etc
looking for it
The salary cap isn’t officially set yet for 2012 but there are some basics. I’m working on an offseason primer post with some details on that, free agents, draft picks, etc.

I would like to see......
1. re-sign Rogers
2. franchise Dashon
3. re-sign Alex to a short term deal
4. make a BIG push for Carl Nicks
5. Try and get either Bowe/V Jax/Stevie Johnson/D Jax
6. Let Brooks walk for probably bigger $ than the niners would want to spend – draft his replacement in 1st or 2nd and let Aldon take over OLB/Rush DE spot every down
7. Draft WR in 1st or 2nd (depending on if they sign a wr or if Brooks leaves)
8. Get positional depth with the remainder of picks – DE/CB/S/C
9. Make an offer to Terrell Thomas/Tracy Porter/Jason Allen after the big name CB’s are off the table…..similar to last year with Rogers (obviously if there is $ left)
Random draft-related thoughts:
1) I could easily see Justin Blackmon dropping out of the top 10. Despite that being a need area for a number of top-10 teams. Why? Questions about his timed speed, and the recognition that he played with a top-flight NFL-ready QB. He’ll be a 1st-rounder, but might not be in the top 10.
2) I’d be surprised if Kellen Moore was taken before Russell Wilson. Or if anybody spent more than a 5th-Rounder on either of them.
3) Quentin Coples will go in the top 10. It’s not news except for the fact that he struggled and was much less productive in his senior year.
4) I want TJ Graham on the 49ers. He has Mike Wallace potential.
5) It’ll be interesting to see if the 49ers look at CB Stephen Gilmore out of South Carolina. I’m sure they will have been looking at him when they were drafting Chris Culliver.
So far, 2011 has been Harbaugh-some!

If Blackmon falls out of the top 10
Ill be beyond shocked.

If you're taking a guy in the top 10, that means you expect him to be top 5 at his position.
Who would Blackmon unseat?
Andre Johnson
Larry Fitzgerald
Megatron
Hakeem Nicks
Miles Austin
Obviously I could list other names (Vincent Jackson, Brandon Marshall, Victor Cruz, Wes Welker, AJ Green). Is Blackmon a clear upgrade over those guys and if so how/why?

I was reading that he was looking pretty good. I know he’s a midget, but they are saying he can make all the throws and his arm his pretty strong. Obviously I can;t see a team drafting him in the first 3 rounds but I can see someone like the skins making a push for him. Coples is a beast and he had a sick day at practice yesterday…..he was pretty much unblockable and he made the o-line look like high schoolers. I’d like to see kendall wright somehow drop to the niners…..Is it likely….I don’t think so especially once he preforms at the combine. I’d also love ashlon jeffery drops. Here’s hoping
think the niners would draft janoris jenkins if he drops to them?
I know he has character concerns but I don;t know if Harbaugh would care that much. He seems like a guy that can make guys buy into the “team” concept, no?
FoxSports-Peter Schrager MOCK Draft
NFC WEST:
Rams – WR Justin Blackmon
Hawks – DE Nick Perry
Cards – OG David DeCastro
49ers – CB Chase Minnifield
Calif Teams:
Chargers – LB Courtney Upshaw
Raiders – 1st round pick traded for Carson Palmer
That's a perfect deal
By then Kaep should be ready.

Because if he isn’t ready after three years and being in the same system he will never be ready.

also Alex will probably ask for 10-11 and get it...
that said: should they not offer him 5 yrs for the 8-9 and still have a solid option at back up, or starter if CK is NOT ready? avoid having to draft another young QB and throwing him into it with wishful thinking
If CK isn't ready try to resign him again
and draft a new one.

We have him for 3 more years
and then we lose him and as a backup he won’t have to play all that much.

unless the dreaded injury...
I guess I have just been defending Alex for so long that it just comes naturally now. and kinda curious if the 2 yr deal is to test his consistency of the way he performed this year before they offer him the ability to retire in a Niner uni
Keep an eye out for Derek Wolfe. Sounds like he is playing well and would fit in at DE. He may be a solid mid round draft pick.

Like RB Doug Martin out of Boise in later rounds for this team
or the underclassman Lamar Miller out of “The U”
Niners,Nets,Reds & USC!!!

I like him too
Ran well in Boise.

I think Martin will end up a 2nd rounder
5’9 219 is a monster back and I think his 40 time could be in 4.4 range. Good all around productivity too. Very interesting prospect.

RB's value is down across the board
RB’s will fall this year, only a few teams need Starters (Jets, Browns, etc) more will be picking for depth and change of pace backs, Martin will fall to 3rd or 4th, along with Lamichael James, Polk, Herron.
If Mark Ingram can be 1 of 4 backs, Hunter fall to the 4th, and Murray fall to the 4th, so can these guys, no knock on their talent though.
Big fan of Martin here
He’s the only back in the draft that can do it all. It’s so rare to see a guy at that level be such a good pass blocker.
Our scouts have been seen chatting him up at the Senior Bowl.
Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.
Of course he is awesome
he got to play with Kellen Moore.

I'm a fan of both,
but isn’t Miller projected to go 1st or high 2nd? Does Miller have the strength to be a #1 back, b/c I don’t know?
Don't know his projections, but as for #1 back he can do that & more
Just the VT game alone showed he’s a monster….

Chris Polk
Love the way this dude runs. He’ll probably be gone by the 2nd round, Baalke and co wouldnt draft a rb that high.
Seen a lil bit of Juron Criner yesterday. He’s a big receiver with great hands. Wouldn’t mind seeing that on this squad.
Receivers I would love to see in a Niners uni is Wright, Sanu, or Criner

That's why I like him
He’s the prototypical bell cow back. when Gore slows down, Polk, and Hunter can be formidable duo in the backfield.

Best Case Scenario
DRAFT
Rd 1 – Alshon Jeffrey WR, Alfonzo Dennard CB, or Best G, or best 3 technique DE
Rd 2 – Best Guard available, Lamar Miller RB, Chris Polk RB, Dan Herron RB
Rd 3 – Best CB
Rd 4 – Best MLB/OLB (for depth)
Rd 5 – Safety (M. Williams gone, R. Smith gone, need to resign Dashon)
Rd 6 – Stanford Players
Rd 7 – The fastest small school prospect at WR, CB, S (special teams)
Can anybody confirm if we have any additional picks from trades, or compensatory picks from FA losses last year? (Lawson started CIN, Clements Started CIN, Franklin started NO, Laboy started SD, etc)
FA will dictate the draft though
if we resign Larry Grant, Dashon, Carlos, Brooks, then we can focus on drafting starters like WR, G then go for depth. if not, we will be drafting to replace FA’s that the league will want from our great defense
Alfonzo D. I wouldn't touch. Was getting burned consistently in matchups.
We need another tightend I’d love to get Fleener if he dropped in the second or Ladarius Green in the 3rd or 4th.
