2012 49ers Offseason Primer: NFL Draft Picks, Free Agents, Salary Cap, Important Dates

The 49ers 2011 season is over, but things are just getting started with the 2012 offseason. The 49ers took care of some relatively easy business on Tuesday as they signed seven players to Future/Reserve contracts. As the offseason moves along, there are plenty of notable dates to mark down on your calendar. If only a month is listed, that is a basic estimation. We know things like minicamp and OTAs will happen, but we don't have any specific dates yet:

Jan 28: Senior Bowl
Feb 20-Mar 5: Teams may designate franchise or transition player
Feb 22-28: NFL Combine
March 2-28: College pro days take place
March 13: Start of League year (beginning of free agency, trading)
March 17: Deadline for submission of qualifying offers by clubs to restricted free agents
April (generally around week of Draft): 2012 NFL schedule released
April 26-28: 2012 NFL Draft
May: Minicamp
June: OTAs
Late July: Training Camp

Head after the jump for a rundown of the 49ers 2012 draft picks, free agents and more.

Star-divide

As the 49ers move into the offseason, one of the most frequently asked questions lately has been what the salary cap will be in 2012. Last month, Charley Casserly indicated the cap would be similar to this year, when it was approximately $120 million. That seems to be a consensus point at the moment, but the number could change. I recall instances in the past where one cap number was expected, but some last minute accounting led to higher than expected numbers. So, we'll have to wait and see, but for now we're looking at $120 million and change.

Our friends at Niner Cap Hell try and keep a running tally of the 49ers salary cap situation. It is not a simple task because there is no single place that lists every needed detail. Instead, everybody has to cobble together information where they can find it. Accordingly nobody is perfect, but NCH does a great job with the limitations in place.

They had the 49ers with approximately $16 million in cap space in this recently completed season. The 49ers will obviously have plenty more cap space with free agents coming off the books. As it currently stands, it appears the 49ers top salary cap numbers in 2012 belong to Vernon Davis ($8,117,666), Justin Smith ($6,375,000), Patrick Willis ($6,254,000) and Isaac Sopoaga ($4,955,000). The 49ers have four other players with cap figures in the four million range (Michael Crabtree, Frank Gore, Ray McDonald and Donte Whitner.

But Norris did an OK job this yera when Miller was out. He’s not nearly as flexible a player, but he surprised me this season. He was quite the liability he was last year. Chilo is still a complete mess, though.

by HUNGRY HUNTER on Jan 26, 2012 2:52 PM PST reply actions

I'd be surprised if the niners got any

They signed a ton of free agents this year, nine by my count (Goodwin, Rogers, Whitner, Williams, Edwards, Akers, Costanzo, Grant, and Gooden). Sure, all the guys they let go became starters (Wragge, Spikes, Baas, Lawson, Clements, LaBoy, and Franklin) — but I think numbers are more important than relative skill when it comes to compensatory picks.

by ninerspride on Jan 26, 2012 3:09 PM PST up reply actions

grant and gooden were cut so they do not count. i think akers was also cut? edwards does not account against that much

Akers was an FA, and edwards was on the roster for a long time

So who knows how that gets tabulated. Look, the whole comp pick process is black magic. Baalke could end up with an extra 4th or nothing at all.

Rogers balances out Baas
Akers balances out Spikes
Whitner balances out Franklin
Goodwin balances out lawson
Costanzo, Grant and Gooden got more money than Wragge

seems like if anything we’re a little on the plus side.

Also, not sure how Smith and Goldson affect it since they were both technically FAs.

and I mean contract wise not value to the team

grant and gooden were cut from their previous team and your own free agents do not matter. baas got 27.5 million contract from the giants that is almost more than rogers, whitner, and akers combined

by HUNGRY HUNTER on Jan 26, 2012 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

are you sure it’s calculated based on the total value of the contract?

Because if you break down Baas’ contract annually it’s pretty much what Rogers is making

by reedkrase on Jan 26, 2012 3:25 PM PST up reply actions

also, according to wikipedia

Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks.

by reedkrase on Jan 26, 2012 3:27 PM PST up reply actions

Compensatory Picks

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player’s salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick.
If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as “supplemental compensatory selections”).
Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft.

On an off season not that may impact the Niners...

how soon do people think the Colts will cut Peyton Manning? Soon, or near the March deadline?

And there aren’t many on that FA list that the Niners should be hell bent on keeping.

by salary_cap on Jan 26, 2012 2:55 PM PST reply actions

No reason for them to act quickly

If they’d like, they could give him a physical the day before his bonus is due, and cut him if they don’t like the results. There’s nothing in it for them to act faster.

by ninerspride on Jan 26, 2012 3:01 PM PST up reply actions

ending the media circus

and controversy would be one reason. They already know they are cutting him. Don’t know why they would wait to see his health progress unless if it were to try and sell as many season tickets as possible prior to cutting him.

by salary_cap on Jan 26, 2012 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

Ticket sales drive this league

so I’m guessing they cut Manning March 16th at 5pm.

by reedkrase on Jan 26, 2012 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

but the right thing to do is to cut him right after the superbowl.

still think they wait to cut him

by reedkrase on Jan 26, 2012 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

I bet it's in his contract

manning is probably going to make up his 28 million in tabloid royalties.

by reedkrase on Jan 26, 2012 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

Colts did this in 2011

They didn’t tell anyone Manning was seriously injured until after season tickets got sold, possibly not until the end of the preseason.

Then again, they wrote manning a $20 million check this year by not putting him on injured reserve, basically as a thank you for his service. Clearly the Colts are willing to do right by Manning, so who knows when they’ll cut him.

How much do you think he costs in free agency? There’s not a lot of precedent in the injured, capable-but-aging HOF quarterback market.

by ninerspride on Jan 26, 2012 3:30 PM PST up reply actions

don't they still have to pay him that $20 million

if he was on injured reserve. ? I don’t think you can get a discount on a player by putting him on IR.

But you are probably right about the season tickets. And the uncertainty of neck nerves as the injury is unprecendeted as well. I imagin lots of unguaranteed $$$ and incentives.

by reedkrase on Jan 26, 2012 3:18 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not sure if third round tenders exist

But the new CBA may have changed those rules. I think the lowest tender you can place is second round tender, or one equal to the player’s original draft round (which in Grant’s case, is the seventh).

by ninerspride on Jan 26, 2012 3:36 PM PST up reply actions

I thought that since Grant was drafted in the 7th you could offer as a tender a 7th or any round higher . . . no idea why these rules are so complex

by reedkrase on Jan 26, 2012 4:38 PM PST up reply actions

only a few of those guys

contributed much to the team this year. That’s a good thing.

by salary_cap on Jan 26, 2012 3:07 PM PST reply actions

totally agree

by my count, there are only 3 players that are going to get big money contracts (Smith, Rogers, and Goldson), 2-5 players who are getting <3 mill/year contracts if they come back at all (Snyder, Brooks, Ginn, Morgan, Grant) and then a bunch of players that are basically irrelevant to the salary cap situation. That’s still a lot of players to resign, but its not going to be particularly expensive.

by ninerspride on Jan 26, 2012 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

Nothing against Alex Smith

I mean he had a GREAT year and I would love to see him back next year but……If not how about Matt Flynn his contract is up and we could get him to compete for the starting job next year. I mean he did only play one game this year and only a couple two years ago but he’s a natural back there, he steps up and finds the open reciever. I think with JH’s help he would be a STUD in two years look what he did with Alex. That game vs Giants Alex did nothing much at all..you can not tell me that if we had a solid QB we wouldn’t of won. He missed a wide open K.Williams for a TD, and the trows to his WR were awful.

Ef Matt Flynn

He’s a carbon copy of Kevin Kolb. Teams can overpay him at their own risk, just like the dumbass Cardinals did (and give away their best db and a 2nd round pick). He has 9 career TDs and 5 Ints. People think he’s a big time free agent based on ONE game, ONE game! I know it was a great game, but c’mon. I don’t want him or Manning. Alex Smith FINALLY has consistency and will only get better. As long as the team signs/drafts a big, possession WR with good hands and who runs good routes and can be a red zone threat, I like Smith to get 22-25 touchdowns, 3500-3700 yards.

by Liquid Pantyhose on Jan 26, 2012 10:23 PM PST up reply actions

does anyone find it likely that

any of the players on this list could be extended before the FA period? (I’m thinking guys like Rogers, Smith, Goldson…) The only benefit to this is to guard against other bidders that may increase the price

by salary_cap on Jan 26, 2012 3:32 PM PST reply actions

contracts

I could see Alex Smith getting it done before then. Carlos Rogers seems to want to as well, but there has been some mention of figuring out his market. I’d be surprised if Goldson got done before March 13. He was looking around for a deal last year and didn’t get anything, so I don’t see how after his high profile 2011, why he would not wait to see what the market can get him.

by David Fucillo on Jan 26, 2012 3:39 PM PST up reply actions

Goldson

For some reason I feel like Goldson got the message last year, loyalty is a lot stronger this year than it was in years past, I really expect Smith, Rogers and Goldson to be signed before March, but then who knows with Rosenhaus.

by reedkrase on Jan 26, 2012 4:41 PM PST up reply actions

I feel like he was being misused by Manusky

The old coaching staff seemed to always have him in cover two or in primary coverage. He’s a beast when he’s the single safety deep, sitting back and reacting to the QB. You have to think he’d like to come back and play for Fangio with Whitner, Rogers, and the rest of the defense.

by ninerspride on Jan 26, 2012 4:49 PM PST up reply actions

I've spent the last year defending Goldson

But I wouldn’t sign him. He is going to want big money and the only reason he played “so well” is that it was a contract year. If he wants a fair contract then I’m all for bringing him back but the reality is he is going to be looking for a fat payday.

We can get a solid S for cheap and spend that money on a WR. I like the guy more than most on these boards but not for big money.

by Tyler50 on Jan 26, 2012 6:27 PM PST up reply actions

The team tried to extend a few players mid-season

But were rebuffed by their respective agents. Here’s Maiocco from December:

A league source told CSNBayArea.com on Thursday that the 49ers have presented contract proposals to several other players but each has turned down the organization’s offer. Among the players to whom the 49ers are believed to have offered new deals are outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks, guard Adam Snyder, linebacker Larry Grant and special-teamer C.J. Spillman.

So the team might try again, but it looks like most of the free agents are waiting for free agency. The two exceptions might be Rogers and Smith, neither of whom seem like they are particularly excited about being on the market.

by ninerspride on Jan 26, 2012 3:43 PM PST up reply actions

Well, I certainly like where the 49ers heads are at. Those are 4 guys I would like to see retained. I hope it works out in the 49ers favor.

not surprised that Snyder turned it down, he’s had too many coaches start Chilo ahead of him for too many years only to find himself starting again by mid-season. Snyder wants to be a team’s starter and 49ers don’t seem to ever be willing to give him that security.

So… are we all in agreement to let Chilo Rachal slip into free agency as if he was never a 49er? I’d like to retain Snyder and add either a free agent and/or draft pick to play behind him. I seriously would take my chances with a rookie instead of Rachal. The guy is a pure liability. Kind of like Taylor Mays in coverage. Zing!

Not a huge fan of Crabs myself.

He’s a number 2 guy. As is Joshua Morgan. But the latter outperformed the former (before injury) and demonstrated better chemistry with Alex.

by runningblack on Jan 26, 2012 5:18 PM PST up reply actions

pretty clear, Crabtree still has a ton to prove, however....

I’m not sure either if he can ever validate he is a # 1 WR.

After 3 seasons I see what you see, he is a number 2 type guy.

by BigMar on Jan 26, 2012 5:37 PM PST up reply actions

Crabs can be a great slot guy or #2

Who knows what Morgan will be like when he returns. Great guy but let’s not start cutting guys who have a knack for pulling in Smith’s inaccurate passes for a guy who missed all of last season and has never had a breakout season. We can afford to let them both compete. We need to replace Edwards with a guy who can truely stretch the field. There are tons of free agent WR’s this year there is no reason we can’t sign two potential #1 type guys. Let them all compete and then cut either morgan, crabs or williams.

I for one think Williams has more upside than morgan or crabs. So he had a bad game returning punts. He had a good year as the forth WR.

by Tyler50 on Jan 26, 2012 6:34 PM PST up reply actions

Im thinking there may be a possilbility that 9ers can trade their 30 draft spot....

in order to gain a couple more draft picks.

One scenario some team looking to trade back into the bottom of the first round and approaching the 9ers by offering a 2nd and 4th rounder for their 30 spot in first round.

It would have to be a trade the 9ers seriously would have to ponder.

Our 2011 draft crop was a BIG TIME help in our great win/loss record.

Our 53 man roster in no way is rock solid from top to bottom….we still need better players.

With the above trade we end up with a total of 8 draft picks….

2 – 2nd rounders
1 – 3rd
2- 4th rounders
1-5th
1-6th
1-7th

by BigMar on Jan 26, 2012 5:44 PM PST reply actions

I'd rather the Niners traded their first for a first next season, and possibly a fourth and fifth this season.

Much deeper class next season.

Alex Smith 86%+ QB rating with 22+ TDs this season, hopefully! :)

by teekay on Jan 26, 2012 5:51 PM PST up reply actions

What about WR

We had a lot of injuries but the wr position still lacks…crabtree and Morgan shouldn’t be top dogs in any system. 30th pick in the draft isn’t where you find stud receivers so the team may need to take a gander into free agency. There’s a few big names out there, my two personal favorites being Dwayne Bowe and Vincent Jackson. If you lined either of these guys up with VD and had Morgan as a 2 and craptree in the slot, suddenly, your receiving core looks dangerous. I’d prefer Bowe. My concern is: would a big dog free agent receiver want to come play on a ground and pound system with Alex Smith throwing to them?
