Nice Story about Kyle Williams

Fooch's Note: I was planning on a front page FanShot of this, but since CalBear949 put together this FanPost, I'll just move this up top. Head after the jump to read a great article about a seven year-old kid sending a letter to Kyle Williams.

Star-divide

Saw this and thought I should share:

Owen inherited his love of the 49ers from his dad, Michael Shure, a political contributor to The Young Turks on Current TV. Michael is my friend and Owen, I should point out, is my godson. Sundays during the season, Owen races around the house in his Frank Gore jersey, cheering every Patrick Willis tackle ("P-Willie" to Owen) and referring to Alex Smith as "Alex." He's not just the quarterback. He's a friend.

So Sunday, as the Niners lost in memorably disheartening fashion, Owen became inconsolable. He was crying, saying of Kyle Williams, with the distinct sobs of a seven-year-old between each word, "But... why... did he... have to... fumble?"

Which is why, I imagine, it was easy for Owen to pivot from the agony of defeat to the thrill of loyalty. Trying to get his son to stop crying, Michael asked him, "If you feel this way, how sad do you think Kyle Williams is?"

Owen paused a second, then asked his dad, "Can I write him a letter to make him feel better?" And from that, an old-fashioned letter -- the ultimate anti-Twitter, the un-social media -- was born.

The Letter:

Dear Mr. Williams:

We just watched the Playoff game. I feel really bad for you but I wanted to tell you that you had a great season. you sould be very proud, so I wanted to say thank you.

I am your #1 FAN!

and by the way...I respect how Kyle Williams Manned Up and took the press questions

without ducking out. Very Classy Guy, that Kyle…..and frankly, I do think he has WR talent !

Kyle simply has to just be smarter about securing the ball because he clearly has punt/kick return skills. Just hold the ball, and make better judgement when a ball is rolling on the ground towards you.

Bottom Line….Kyle did indeed exhibit WR/PR/KR skills…he has them!

They could have gone 7-13 on third down and not scored a single additional point

However if that muffed punt doesn’t happen the game never goes to OT in the first place.

I'm not about to abandon the guy cause he screwed up

I’ve spent the last two years writting how he needs more time. He finally broke the roaster this year and played great. He had a crappy game playing a position that he hadn’t played all year. I like him more than Morgan or Crabs for being on the team in two years.

He stood there up and took responibilty for his actions and I am willing to wager he will use it as motivation to work even harder and prove himself.

Keep in mind that I am typing this in the shower with my cloths on while drinking scotch. I haven’t moved from this position since the game and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.

Coaching oversight

The first time Williams bobbled the ball and fumbled it on the reverse, receivers coach and/or ST coach needed to take him aside and calm him and get him to settle down. Williams was asked about this and he said that the coaches did not do anything of that kind. Poor Williams may have tried to make up by getting a big play later on the punt returns.

Learning experience all around.

by Mood_Indigo on Jan 26, 2012 6:56 PM PST reply actions

Possibly...

…but he’s been doing the same thing since college. I mean the exact same thing literally. How many mistakes does it take before you learn?

by Bigmouth on Jan 26, 2012 7:13 PM PST up reply actions

Steve Young's take...

on his KNBR show, The relevant quote is here
Excerpt:
"When you saw him dive for the punt, in the rain, I couldn’t believe it," Young said. "That’s the one … the other ones were kind of more normal. How many times has a punt returner gotten hit by a punt that’s now rolling? It’s not like it hit once and then hit him. It had a trajectory and you know you’re not going to pick it up. That’s just egregious. That just can’t happen. People lose their jobs over stuff like that. But when he dove for it in the championship game in the rain, I just thought the guy – that’s crazy. It’s a crazy way to play."

I’d think that Harbaugh now wishes that the coaches should have told Williams to play it safe.

Could shoulda woulda…… The moving finger writes….

More I think about it...

…the more I think you’re right on target with your comment. If anything, knowing Williams’s history makes it even more imperative to specifically instruct him to play it safe.

by Bigmouth on Jan 27, 2012 8:47 AM PST up reply actions

I had the same reaction to the diving punt catch

I went crazy over it because it was such a bizarre and high risk play. After that, every single punt I was waiting for something bad to happen and it did, twice.

My opinion

Kyle had a bad day which made my next three days not so good, that Sunday being the worst of them. I went through my f@#k KW stage all over FB but after calming down and thinking about it, I asked my self the question if roles were reversed could I have held on to the ball on that last return? The answer is I highly doubt it. and when RC fumbled and cost us the game he didn’t get this type of treatment, so I grew up and got over it, like so many others need to do. He didn’t go into your house and rob you, he didn’t kill a member of your family, he fumbled a ball, its time to move on. That’s just my opinion, but opinions are like a$$holes every one has one and they both stink.

by Nicholas Kitchman on Jan 26, 2012 9:00 PM PST reply actions

I doubt Hunter or Walker would've fumbled it...

and Roger Craig fumbled once not twice. He was in his 8th year and on a serious decline. By that time he had more than proven himself as a Niner, something Williams is a long way from doing. Is it a coincidence that that was RC’s last game in SF? Now, I don’t condone these death threats and I don’t hate the guy but clearly if he doesn’t fumble, twice, the Niners would be headed to Indy. The only argument I see in his defense is he split two defenders and was subsequently overthrown by Smith on what would’ve been an 80 yd touchdown.

by bfar21 on Jan 27, 2012 9:32 AM PST up reply actions

Wow, cool kid.

I hope KW sends him something autographed. I once wrote to the Niners when I was about 11 (hey same age as Harbaugh) and was terribly disappointed I didn’t get anything autographed.

I just hope Kyle sees it

Because that letter is fantastic and that kid is amazing. Hope it gives Kyle a little bit of cheering up, after all the hate mail he’s gotten. I mean, putting myself in Kyle’s shoes I’d be beating myself up pretty bad, and if I got a letter like that from a fan I’d be over the moon. That kid would be my hero.

There’s a strong hope that Kyle will eventually see the Huffington Post article, which gives it a lot of exposure. And I’m sure since we here at Niners Nation have seen it, it’ll get spread through to Kyle in some way or another.

I agree

Someone will either send ti to him, or it will get slapped on his locker. I remember watching the Niners for the first time in my life in 1979. Steve DeBerg was qb and Montana was riding pine until around Dec 1 I think. I was 7. Shortly thereafter, they won their first ring. Hopefully Owen has the same feeling real soon.

I was 8

Ya, tell me about it. It’s like that certain age when you’re a kid, events impact you in a deeper way. We were spoiled. Man it was fun growing up during those years of good football! And devastating during the bad years.

I have a fuzzy memory of the years of Steve Young, when he had this backup named Steve Bono, something like that. I had this brief, comfortable feeling of “oh here’s our next great QB”, the Heir to the Throne, so to speak. No idea if Bono was even good (probably not since no one mentions him), but I was young and being spoiled with winning football games. I was like, first there was Montana, then Young, so of course we’re going to have a future football legend lined up to take Young’s place when he retires. My brief little feeling of euphoria, “all is right in the world”, haha.

that kid showed more maturity

Then 95% of adult fans, including me. I cursed Kyle Williams for a good hour. He’ll be back next season and for karmas sake, he’ll probably end up catching the game winning TD in the Superbowl.

by Ador08 on Jan 26, 2012 10:21 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Why are we treating Kyle like a 8 year old?

No matter how you spin, chop, twist it the reason we are not going for 6 next week is because of Kyle Williams. He’s a proffesional football player, and for what i understand if your not going to field a punt you stay as far away as possible from the ball. His actions directly resulted in 10 points in a game where pointd were a premium.

Yes i feel bad for the kid but that dosent change the fact that he lost the game for us. All season we have a “struggling” offence which wasent all that great at 3rd downs, but by avoiding STUPID mistakes we still came out of the regular season with a 13-3 record. Lets be real, putting poor Kyle Williams feelings aside. And much respect and confusion if you dont blame Kyle. Poor Frank, Vernon, Justin, Patrick and Alex who all deserved to play in the SB.

Thanks for a place to vent

by Frisco_Kid on Jan 27, 2012 6:59 AM PST via mobile reply actions

this is actually not true

You can’t blame a closer 100% for blowing a tie game in baseball, and you can’t blame a guy who fumbles (even twice) in a close game. The team went 1/12 on 3rd down – that is not Kyle WIlliams fault (well, ironically since he invisible in the passing game it’s probably 10% his fault).

Was it Darren Sprole’s fault that the Niners beat the Saints? He fumbled a kickoff in what turned out to be a dead locked game, too. Oh, hmmm it’s seems that wasn’t even the only kick return fumble. I didn’t hear anyone here exclaiming how lucky the 49ers were to grab 2 special teams fumbles.

Kyle Williams had a bad — nay, awful game. He wasn’t the only part of the team that failed (lookin’ at you… offense!)

For those of you backing Kyle Williams up...

Who is to say he didn’t make 3 mistakes on PURPOSE, because he gambled and tooked the NY Giants to win this game. 6 months of hard work, blood, sweat, tears, and stress all thrown away because of his screw ups. There is no making up for this because you all think the NFC championship is something easy to get every year. psshhhhhh. He should ask to get released before he gets shit from the fans next year. I don’t feel sorry for this guy, because i didn’t here a “Sorry” anywhere for what he did, its like he doesn’t give a shit about it. He is trying to look like the victim trying to “man up in front for the media” with out an apology and now he is getting shit from fake fans. Get the hell out of here, literally.
