NFL Conference Championship Round Prediction Games Results
I apologize for the delay. I figured the fan post area would need a few days to cool down after the bitter loss. Even the last result recap was bumped within 24 hours with as predicted more repeat it's like '81 rehash fan posts. As much as I hated the ubber annoying, constantly repeating, surface level nostalgia like '81 fan posts it wasn't crying kids over the 49ers loss and Kyle Williams. Instead of real parenting, like using the opportunity to warn kids this is what happens when Kyle Williams doesn't eat his vegetables, let's queue up the social media and get some youtube/twitter hits. Worst yet is the positive feedback given back to these people. Grant Cohn gave better advice to Kyle Williams than that kid. To paraphrase, you are now a marginal receiver with nothing to contribute on special teams, good luck making any NFL roster next season Kyle ... feel better?
Oh well, not the first and last time I've had to deal with 49ers fans soppy reactions this week. Instead of answering or not answering a question, Harbaugh rants how "feeling" questions must a California sissy thing. A few writers take Harbaugh to task for his response and overall response to media all season. Maiocco furbishes a tears story out of a split second eye rub. I don't need a survey to know which story 49ers fans took hook, line and sinker. Then there is this quote, "Hurt but not slain, lay down and bleed awhile, then we'll rise and fight again." Its a nice quote and everyone wants to provide a historical background on it's origin. Another little historical tidbit on this quote, Marv Levy used it after the Bills crushing lose in Super Bowl XXV than rode it to three more crushing Super Bowl defeats. Feels great to be a 49ers fan heading into the off-season! Back seat in the draft, not resigning own free agents, small hands talk, Crabtree attitude psychologists, 3-4 1st/2nd picks in everyone's 49ers mock draft dropping to mid/late rounds ... thank God Kenny Powers and Game of Thrones is almost here.
Moving on. Congrats to our Super Bowl contestants: Str8Balr, Stupifyed, AKinferno and howtheyscored. Next week is the championship. Fooch will pick some sort of extra tiebreaker based on yards so pay attention. How did AKinferno return from the dead? He found a scoring error in his favor. He also pointed out the 49ers should have kept handing the ball off to Frank Gore and maybe that is why Harbaugh was teary eyed the next day. The NFL is going to crown their worst Super Bowl Champion in the modern era next week but we are going to crown one impressive prediction champion.

Scoring Explained
Your prediction has these same three components as the actual game score.
1) If you predict the correct winner for an individual game, we will score your prediction against the actual game. If you predict the incorrect winner for an individual game, your prediction will not be scored.
2) Ideally, you will predict the exact point differential of the actual game. Say, for example, this is 45. If you predict a score with a PD of 45, the difference between your predicted PD and the actual PD is 0 (45 - 45 = 0). The worse your prediction, the greater that difference becomes. Therefore, the closer the difference is to zero, the better.
3) Ideally, you will predict the exact point total of the actual game. Say, for example, this is 65. If you predict a score with a PT of 65, the difference between your predicted PT and the actual PT is 0 (65 - 65 = 0). The worse your prediction, the greater that difference becomes. Therefore, the closer the difference is to zero, the better.
So, assuming that you predict the correct winner of the individual game, we simply add the difference between your predicted and the actual PD to the difference between your predicted and the actual PT. The closer this total is to zero, the better your prediction is. A zero exactly will always be a perfect prediction.
pPD = Predicted Point Differential
aPD = Actual Point Differential
pPT = Predicted Point Total
aPT = Actual Point Total
x = Subscore
|pPD - aPD| + |pPT - aPT| = xThat total becomes your subscore for each individual game. These subscores are then ranked, and the five best (including ALL ties) are awarded points. Perfect predictions are awarded 10 points. If the highest subscore for a particular game is not a perfect prediction, it is awarded 5 points. Points then follow in descending order, so that all of the second best predictions get 4 points, the third best all get 3 points, and so on.

I think we should change the scoring system.
I propose throwing out the current system and calculating raw scores like this:
1. Calculate how far off you were on the winning team’s score.
2. Calculate how far off you were on the losing team’s score.
3. Take the larger number and double it.
Thoughts?
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
Sure, keep the rule that you have to pick the winner correctly.
But then use my formula to calculate the raw scores. It would be a lot simpler and I think just as fair.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
So if, at home, team A beats team B by a score of 13 – 21, and I predict 10 – 28 and bignerd predicts 13 – 28 and Fooch predicts 11 – 14, we all tie?
Once more, coming to you by proxy.

By the way, Fooch, way to stick your neck out there and predict somebody scoring 11. That almost never happens.

Yes, that would be a 3-way tie.
What’s wrong with that?
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.
Actually, I just hadn’t thought it through (considering all three of those are ties in the original system, anyway). Does your way just give the same results as the old one, given that the winner must be correct? Because that’s pretty wild.
I don’t know that it would be easier to implement, though (not harder, either). With an Excel sheet to give you easy ordered results, it’s plug and play either way. I guess I see nothing against it. Surely, it’s simpler to explain.
Once more, coming to you by proxy.

Yeah, it's actually just a simplified version of the current formula.
I was trying to highlight the flaw in the current system: it ignores whichever score you were closer to and just ranks people based on whichever score they got most wrong, after doubling the number for no reason.
As a serious proposal, I think we should take my formula and replace step 3 with “add the two numbers together”.
So in your example above, the raw scores would be 10, 7, and 9 respectively, with bignerd winning because he had one matchup (Offense A vs. Defense B) pegged perfectly, and was no farther off on the other matchup than you or Fooch.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

I don’t really see the point of doubling it. You’re going to get the same order regardless.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
Yeah.
Gotta be honest, I thought someone was going to call me out on that a lot sooner.
We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

Double whammification
I think my head imploded.
French fries are really Belgian, sausages and bagels have the same amount of protein, two countries' names mean "turkey", and Santa Claus was invented by the Coca-Cola company. Is life weird or what?
Debe ser verde y volante - Πράσινο και να πετάει - It's gotta be green and it's gotta fly!
Brains!
Back from the dead and into the Championship round. Thanks Bignerd and Fooch for checking my scores. I was cool with being eliminated til I saw the mistake. I never pick against the Niners. Hell, I pick NFC against AFC in the Probowl cause like half the players are from our team :p
Congrats to everyone in the finals, Shame on everyone who got points for picking the Niners to lose. They were still the best team this year, regardless of the outcome.
