2012 Senior Bowl Game Thread: TV Schedule, Rosters, Players To Watch
The 2012 Senior Bowl gets underway today at 1:00pm PT with kickoff happening on NFL Network. Mike Mayock and Charles Davis will provide analysis throughout the game while Paul Burmeister will handle play-by-play duties. The game will also be available on SiriusXM Radio with Jason Horowitz handling play-by-play and Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan handling the analysis.
This is the last of the major All-Star games, which means the next significant step in the NFL Draft process will be the NFL Combine at the end of February. The week of practice leading up to this game will leave just as much an impression as anything else, but a strong performance in today's game could get a player further on the radar of a given team. I would argue that a player who struggled in practice could improve their stock a bit, while a player that excelled in practice might not hurt their stock as much in game conditions.
Earlier in the week I asked what positions people thought were most important to address in the coming months. Wide receiver ran away with the vote. Of the 1,510 votes, 1,186 voted wide receiver first. Cornerback came in second, with guard, outside linebacker and running back following it.
Matt Waldman had an interesting breakdown of what fans can expect to see during the game today. In breaking down the two teams, he had some interesting comments about the wide receivers and the red zone:
However in the red zone, there are some receivers worth watching. Juron Crinor, Marvin McNutt, Jeff Fuller, and Brian Quick join Adams, Jones, and Posey as players I would consider as likely targets inside the 20. Fuller struggled mightily this week in red zone drills. He either failed to get off the line or he dropped the ball. If he is fortunate enough to see a cushion or tight coverage without a punch from the defender, Fuller will make a play.
The 49ers have their issues when it comes to deep threats, but the red zone was also an area of inconsistency. They seemed to pick it up late, but a big bodied threat down close to the end zone could have some considerable value heading into 2012.
A couple of receivers to keep an eye on might be guys like North Carolina's Dwight Jones (South) and Texas A&M's Jeff Fuller (South). Both reportedly struggled quite a bit this week and were consistently showing up on Draft stock DOWN lists. A strong game won't necessarily get them out of that dog-house, but it could give us some ideas about game-performance versus practice performance.
Who or what position will you be looking out for during the game?

That is zOMG young
Just ask the zealous Alex Smith supporters. He’s got 5-6 years left of his prime.
no; ten years

Oh? Since he's already climbed up the cliff and now he's hiking up hill he's done?
He’s going to continue to get better, we’ll be back in the Super Bowl hunt again next year for as long as he’s our QB.

Guys I'm trying to get a better look at today
Cordy Glenn, George Iloka, Cam Johnson, Trenton Robinson, Vick Ballard, Brandon Boykin, and Antonio Allen.
Of course we’ll all be watching the receivers, but I’m going into the game favoring Criner and M. Jones even though both are only around 6’2".

Ok Christian Ponder Rule
When every pass from the QB is 5 yards or less it doesn’t count as a good game. By rule the CBs have to play 5-8 yards off the receiver for this game.
really they have to?

Nice block by Zeitler
Stood up the DT, passed him off to the center, then moved on to Audi Cole to spring Polk into the secondary.

I think Zeitler is a good prospect too
I honestly think the biggest knock against Konz is that the guard next to him was pretty good too. There is a reason Montee Ball was so good this year…

Great idea Fooch
I like the that you have the names and measurables at my finger tips in the post. Rec’d.
Don't know
I do know he did not have a great week of practice. I think he needs to step up his game today in front of the scouts and coaches.
Looked dominant as a Junior
Came back his Senior year, fought a hamstring, a turf toe, and one other leg injury all at the same time. Played through alot of it, looked pretty bad. Dropped alot of balls, played very slow, made alot of mental mistakes. If he had a Senior year like his Junior year he’d be 1st or early to mid 2nd round prospect.
As it stands unless he has a monster day today or a great combine he’ll be lucky to jump into the top 100.

Where would you (and others) consider a comfort point for picking him up?
Our 5th rounder say? Or would you go for him in the 4th?
by ChesapeakeBay9er on Jan 29, 2012 11:13 AM PST up reply actions
He's an "IF" man
If he has a decent combine and if he checks out medically and if he checks out in the interview and if we can put ourselves in a position where he is not the guy we are depending on for results, then maybe you can look at him at the bottom of the fourth.
But quite frankly there are prospects that should be available there that won’t be as big a gamble. I like the kids potential, but I’d probably pass him up in our situation. We need a guy to contribute immediately and I think the chances of Fuller doing that are very low. Well, even lower than normal for a bottom of the 4th or 5th WR. If we had a stable full of WR and wanted a developmental guy then maybe we’d be in the right spot.
Every time Jamie Dukes says something enlightening and informative about football Jerry Rice and I mount up on our flying grizzly bears and claim pirate treasure from the moon. That's how often it happens.
And it wobbled
Just a poor decision by Wilson.
That one was a gimme
But Brandon Taylor is another kid that might pop up in round 5 or 6 and could be excellent depth and development.

M. Jones is listed as a lower round guy
I’m not sure why. The guy can play, he can track the ball over his shoulder, he catches anything within a 10 yard radius of him.
Hypothetical. Lets say for sure you knew that in the 5th and 6th round you could get Marvin Jones and Gerrell Robinson. Do you laugh at the other teams and go away from WR for 1-4 or do you still take a receiver higher?

I still think Kellen is probably the 4th or 5th best QB prospect in this draft. But he’ll have to be developed and have a good line

I think behind the Pats or Saints line he could be damn good
The guards on both teams direct their guys out of the play and open up huge passing lanes. That’s why Brees and Brady never get balls knocked down.

It's not something that you count on when you are drawing up the play
But when your interior is so dominant that the rushers can’t get a hand up and definitely can’t gather themselves for a jump it drastically reduces the number of balls batted at the line of scrimmage.

I really think his talent justifies a top 10 pick. He just looks the part when you are watching film. Those feet just keep on trucking and he doesn’t go down easy. I honestly don’t see much wasted movement when he runs. He’s a beast on yards after inital contact too.

Agreed
The league has changed. Players being bigger, faster, and stronger has negatively imapcted no position more than the RB. They have such a short self life, Jahvid Best most recently. Any team would be insane to have one RB and not a rotation of runners. That breed is almost gone. But if you pair an elite back like Trent Richardson with a LaMichael James… the results could be scary good.
Reggie I always felt could be a mini Marshall Faulk or Ricky Watters. He needs his touches but doesn’t have the right offense to get the most out of his abilities. I always thought if he was paired with Gore they would be a two headed monster.
