Alex Smith Is Our Guy, but Josh Johnson is an UFA
I don't like our depth at quarterback at all. Tolzien is a complete unknown and Kaepernick is as raw as they come right now. Johnson played for Harbuagh at San Diego and is on record as saying he would love to play for him again. I think competition breeds performance, but it would probably piss off Alex Smith and scuttle contract negotiations. I'd rather have Johnson as our #2 guy. Would it make sense brining in a guy like Johnson? Thoughts?

Nice name
And yes I think Josh Johnson makes alot of sense, doesn’t matter if Alex gets pissed off because no one owes him anything just because he had a solid year.

I would love to go back and find all those posts
Where all the people here were calling for Nate Davis to start.
It was laughably embarrassing to read; I actually felt sorry for the people who thought Nate Davis was a viable option in the NFL.

Absolutely not. Back in 09 and 10 Alex Smith was definitely serviceable.
Aside from the beginning of 10 when the whole team was falling apart. Why take away below average QB play at worst (most of the time average to above average play) and trade it for absolutely bottom of the NFL QB play. Doesn’t make any sense.
Nate Davis never had a chance in hell in the league and I was saying that ever since we selected him.
Don't know what the fascination with Johnson is...
He’s not by any means a good QB and isn’t even as good as Smith.
JJ's an unknown commodity

Johnson will probably end up on the Vikings
They invested a lot in Ponder, Johnson would be a cheap investment that would buy time while they figure out whether ponder is it or they need to draft a high round QB in 2013.
Buy time with Ponder being crappy on the bench instead of being crappy on the field?
That would be a waste of time when they should be cleaning house and looking for a new QB.

very few teams will declare a first round draft pick QB a bust after one season
I’m almost certain they’ll give him another shot.
Yep, and I have a feeling they will be cleaning house after next season.

Johnson was what Harbaugh had to work with
At the vast recruiting powerhouse that was San Diego. Harbaugh made him what he was — a guy who should have never sniffed the NFL but made it into the league to be the backup quarterback on a horrible team.
I don’t understand the fascination with bringing him in. Kaepernick has more potential than Johnson and is probably a better start right now.

It'll obviously be apparent what JJ is very quickly
If he’s MORE than what you say… Harbaugh scoops up quickly (an EASY pickup because the guy’s not exactly going to be commanding tons of $$$… And of course he would want to come play for JH after his success at USD)
If not… Zero interest will be shown.
We should know very quickly what JH thinks of his pro potential.

I agree 100%.
We also have a high 2nd round pick invested in Kap, and if for whatever reason (Alex goes down, plays badly), I’d like to go ahead in get Kap in and watch him perform or blow goats so we can see what we have.
JJ could be the 3rd QB, but I’m fine with Tolzien in that department.
why the hell is anyone "FINE" w/Tolzien?
You totally UPGRADE from Tolzien if you can…
If he beats out the competition then great… Let him prove he’s good enough to be the 3rd team QB, though.
Tolzien needs to EARN his cushy clipboard job. He’s a total unknown. I’m completely NOT FINE w/Tolzien based on his college career and 1 relatively decent garbage-time appearance in a ps game while a member of the Chargers (the entire 4th PS game is garbage-time for the most part).

Point conceded.
I just don’t see the big benefit of bringing in a 3rd string QB in the offseason that would cost more money than the one we have.
It could be spent elsewhere.
Think the Texans would agree w/you?
And they got LUCKY… Had TJ Yates not performed decently, their playoff run may have never seen the light of day.

Agree...
Tolzien did not cost a draft pick. I wouldn’t mind seeing a mid-to-late round pick brought in or at least a UDFA (which is a guarantee) to compete during camp and push Tolzien out or make him prove he’s worth hanging on to.
Basically that
I trust Harbaugh to have a good idea of what he’s got in Tolzien, and to have a fair read on Johnson. Since either one or the other could be on the team, if he pursues Johnson, it probably means he likes him. If he dumps Tolzien, it means he knows he’s not the guy.
When it comes to QB’s, I trust Harbaugh to make good decisions. I think Smith gets retained, and Kaepernick gets the learning curve necessary to take the league by storm in 2013.

Like the thought....but....
Then why invest a high 2nd rd pick in Kaepernick? I realize he’s only getting into his 2nd season. But, there’s no sense in having him here if he’s only going to hold the clipboard. (ala Sorgi in Indy) Also, we have money tied up in Tolzien. If he’s not the guy, there’s no sense in investing more mony in a guy who won’t start over, nor challenge Alex Smith. Just sayin’.
K.C.Edwards -AKA- "THE" DarkkStarr
Nah...
If Kaep is going to develop, we need him getting 2nd team snaps, and taking over in games where Alex is either a) ineffective, b) effective to the point where we’re blowing teams out, or c) injured. No reason to bring in a #2.

Of course it does if Harbs thinks the guy can play
Alex hasn’t signed.
Alex didn’t exactly channel Johnny Unitas in 2011.
CK is an unknown commodity at this point.
You ALWAYS try and upgrade the QB position. Think IND found that out? You don’t worry about who’s getting what reps at this point… You ACQUIRE the talent first, worry about the stuff later.
The 49ers wanted Matt Hasslebeck last year, and I guarantee you he would’ve been the Opening Day starter had he signed… I don’t think they’re going to worry about hurting Alex Smith’s feelings by looking at other QBs.

WTF does signing Johnson have to do w/RE-SIGNING Alex Smith?
They are COMPLETELY unrelated…
Johnson isn’t going to command either Matt Flynn money or an opportunity to necessarily compete to start. Not just w/the 49ers, but wherever he goes. It’s not like he’s coming off a banner year, nor does he have any Matt Flynn like games on his resume.
If JJ signs it means Harbs thinks he can POTENTIALLY be a decent player. Nothing more. It’s not like signing him means Harbaugh thinks he’s the QBOTF…

Josh Freeman had a year that had people wondering if he was hiding an injury.
And yet Josh Johnson barely got off the bench. There was no serious discussion of putting him in the starting lineup.
You do realize Johnson was beat out by a Rookie Right ...!!
I'm your " Huckelberry "...it's just my game ..( .AleX ) was asked , what do you think about all the game manager talk ... AleX i guess i just managed myself a VIctory ... Extend the Man ...!!
Most would probably prefer Freeman over J.J. and A.S.
Even though he regressed bigtime……. Maybe if Alex throws 38 TD’s maybe a few more people would sorta want him around. Scrath that 50 would be better, then he might kinda deserve a contract. Oh and Josh Johnson no thank you…..

Flynn had a good game vs NE and torched the Lions
NE and DET… Not exactly the ’85 Bears on defense, either of ’em…
No on Flynn if it’s FOR HUGE YEARS/MONEY… He’s gonna likely get that and he’s started what, 2 games? Played very little other than that. And yeah, he looked amazing v Detroit, but… Rob Johnson anyone?
24 for 28 for nearly 300 yards, couple of TDs, TD on the ground, and zero picks in his first and only start for JAX years ago… Lands a MONSTER CONTRACT w/Buffalo. Big arm, fast, tough, good career at USC, coach’s kid (his Dad’s a GREAT QB coach, currently HC at Mission VIejo HS i think), etc.
Had his moments, but he was injury prone and became most well-known for earning the moniker: ROBOSACK. Becomes a journeyman #2 and then an elbow injury eventually forces him out of the league.
I vote NO on giving Matt Flynn a big money contract… Rather stick w/Alex Smith on a 3-year deal. I LIKE FLYNN A LOT, but not enough to risk a Kevin Kolb or Ryan Fitzpatrick type deal.
(nice thing about having Harbaugh as the HC… If the 49ers shock everyone and sign Flynn to 5 years and $35-Million, I’ll be okay w/it thinking that Harbs knows his QBs)

Exactly. Giving Flynn a Kolb/Fitzpatrick deal when he
played in one of the most QB friendly offenses in the league is ridiculous.
Sign Josh Johnson
And have him compete with Kaepernick to be Smith’s current backup and heir apparent if Smith’s development flatlines next year.
There’s no real downside. QB prospect that Harbaugh loves who should sign a cheap deal. The only question is if JJ thinks he can get to a situation with a clearer line to starting.
