Golden Nuggets: Considering The Rest Of The Playoff Field

Back for another round of the Nuggets. This bye week is only two days old and I'm already over it. It will be nice to enjoy some football with no stress this weekend, but I suppose the interminable wait until January 14 is the price for such a stress-free weekend.

As we move through the playoffs, I'm helping provide some content for SB Nation's NFL hub. It is organized by Joel Thorman (Arrowhead Pride) and includes myself and Jason Garrison (Cincy Jungle). Yesterday's post featured a look at which team from wild card weekend has the best chance to run the table to Indianapolis. I went with New Orleans, which is probably the most obvious choice. Jason picked the Pittsburgh Steelers. Losing Rashard Mendenhall hurts them, but Isaac Redman has impressed me at times this season. We'll have to see how it plays out. Joel basically agreed with both of us, going with Pittsburgh and New Orleans.

Do you see another team as a likely possibility? Later today we'll have a look at the darkhorses of the first weekend, so swing by SB Nation NFL when you get a chance.

I'd put Saints as 3rd

behind Packers, then Niners. Right now the Saints are riding a wave of hype. If they had homefield advantage, then they would be a shoe in for the Super Bowl. But they are a different team on the road. That they would have to win at Niners first, then at Packers, that’s a tough road. Not impossible, but not highly likely either.

The team that could upset in the NFC is the Giants… suspect, but experienced team that could get hot.

Steelers are a good pick in the AFC, but the running game and Roethlisberger’s injury hurt their chances. I think they can win on the road, but with those injuries I like Pats and then Ravens ahead of them.

The top of the AFC is a litlle more muddles, but I don’t see any teams that can really pull and upset from the other 3.

"Healthy Smith, Gore key to 12-4 year"

Best headline I’ve seen in a while. Maybe the other headline read “Awesome defense key to 13-3 year”

How the heck do they get the numbers wrong? Geez.

Win or lose, at the end of the day I'm just happy to see the Niners play well... Okay, winning is good. I prefer winning.

Jesus

you guys see next year’s schedule in the Mercury News piece? Road games against the Saints, Packers, and Pats. That’s insane. Our out of division schedule is gonna be BRUTAL next year.

Home: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins.

Away: Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots and New York Jets.

Dolphins looked alright at the end of the season, and the Jets will once again be a playoff contender. At least we are gonna be on primetime a WHOLE lot.

True, but...

You could argue that this season’s out of division games looked pretty brutal as well though when the schedule was announced. Home to Steelers, Giants, Cowboys, Bucs (looked brutal after the hammering last year) Away to Baltimore, Philly, Lions, Bengals, Skins… Only lost 2 of those in the end.

I’m confident that the niner’s will make the right moves in the offseason and with the coaching the team has I think we’ll stay competitive next season .

Of course this is all crystal ball stuff (any given Sunday and all that) and we have the playoffs to worry about this year yet, but based on how the team has progressed this year, if they continue that trend I think they can hold their own against any team in the league. Not saying that they can win all those games, but I don’t think they’ll be blown away in any of them.

coming into this season though

Pack and pats were seen as the two best in NFL with the saints slightly behind. I just think its ludicrous we play all 3 all on the road

That's what you get for being good

Would you rather we were mediocre and didn’t make the playoffs?

yes

That’s exactly what I want…

NFC West teams > AFC East teams, top to bottom

2012 Schedule

The Saints, Patriots & Packers all on the road…. all 3 of these games will likely be night “prime time” games. Do you think perhaps the electrical problems at the ’Stick during our last night game had anything to do with all of these games being on the road?

what about home and away?

Why do the giants have to come here again?

by mcwagner on Jan 4, 2012 8:22 AM PST via mobile up reply actions

The Giants played here this year as part of the NFC East rotation, whereas next year they play them based on both winning their division. The home/away determination for those different scenarios are made independantly, thus it doesn’t matter that they played them at home this year. The same thing happened with the Niners and Bucs this year and last.

My question

is why on earth do we keep playing the Pack in GB? Is there some reason for it consistently being in GB over the last few years or am I totally overreacting?

by madmatt on Jan 4, 2012 9:39 AM PST up reply actions

Do you now how scheduling works?

This is a good breakdown.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regular_season_%28NFL%29

Packers and 49ers play each other once every 3 years as a part of the Division rotation (NFC West vs NFC North). They rotate home/away then.

Packers and 49ers MAY play each other more if they end up in the same rank in their respective divisions (both 1st in their division, both 3rd, etc). Not sure how the road/home split happens here, although obviously any given team plays 8 and 8

by brundylop on Jan 4, 2012 2:36 PM PST up reply actions

Thanks for the info.

I actually do/did know how the scheduling works but it’s the fact that we seem to be playing in GB the last few times that tripped me up, and I was wondering what was behind that.

Ok good

Yeah, it seems like we’re always over there, right? Never see Rogers for the “screw you, homecoming” game

Man, right now the Home games seem ridiculously easy

compared to the Away games next season. It’s going to be really intense.

Win or lose, at the end of the day I'm just happy to see the Niners play well... Okay, winning is good. I prefer winning.
