Observations from lions saints Game

Saw A lot of interesting things occur in the game last night. Some filled me with apprehension and some were just in disgust at refereeing and linebacker play.

1. The Lions were getting robbed by the officiating all game. Saw 7-8 obvious holds not called, and the fumble on brees being blown dead was crushing in retrospect. The lions inability to score off either Saint turnovers was inexcusable.

2. The Lions linebackers might as well of sat on the bench in the second half. They had no clue where to go in space or who to cover. Worst tackling i've seen in a playoff game.

3. Pierre Thomas and Darren Sproles are special. How special we will find out in a week.

4. The defense has holes and is susceptible at 2nd corner and linebacker. The front is decent against the run, but the front four can't get pressure. Detroit did not attack the middle of the field once they got behind.

5. The way to attack the Saints offense is pressure up the gut and maintain gap discipline to disrupt Breess' sight lines. His lack of height is his weakness and The Lions Wide 9 front played right into the Saints hands.

Overall, it's hard not to be impressed by the Saints and their record breaking offense. The skill position players they throw at you and the solidity of their O-line is staggering. Brees will have 4-5 throws a game that can be picked off, and when protection breaks down he will fumble if hit.

If the 49ers hit Brees 10 times, sack him 3, force 2-3 turnovers and keep Sproles and Thomas in check they will move on I believe. Look for Willis covering Graham and Bowman blitzing up the gut several times with success.

one can only hope and pray. Without a viable offense, the defense will eventually get worn down. NO 35 SF 17

total misunderstanding of the game

Our offense is 5th in the league for average time of possession, ranked one higher than NO. Defense won’t get worn down because our offense will give them a break.

There O-Line is untested

I respect their O-Line from and general stand point, but I noticed most opponents drop their players back into coverage. They rush 3 to 4 linemen, and try to have everyone else underneath or in double coverge. I say to beat them you must have corners who can cover, and LBs who can cover in order to sed some heat at Brees. He will pick any team apart if you allow him time to sit back, and player to run double, and triple moves downfield. With J.Smith, A. Smith, R. McDonald, I. Sapoaga, A. Brooks, P. Willis, N. Bowman, and P. Harylson we should not have a problem in this area. My sole concern is in our secondary. Rodgers, Brown, Culliver have been playing pretty solid, but at time I’ve seen Brown get abused. We will know everything in 6 more days and counting. Defense wins championships. I am banking on it…GO NINERS!

i agree

If Brees is comfortable in the pocket we are in serious trouble ! Colston, Henderson, Meachem, and Moore will kill you if Brees has 5 seconds to unload. we will know pretty quickly what San Fran will do in coverage. I’m curious if they will attack us with 4 wide looks and a single back, and go no huddle. I don’t think we have faced much no huddle all year.

good point

that is the best way to neutralize a great front seven. Hopefully we keep Drew from completing over 70% of his passes and we won’t be on our heels too much.

The defense has holes and is susceptible at 2nd corner

No. Calvin Johnson beat up on our second corner. But Calvin Johnson will beat up on most team’s first corner.

I was talking about the Saints defense lol.

Patrick Robinson, our number 2 corner, led our team in picks this year. Probably not the right guy to attack, unless you have a Calvin Johnson. And let’s face it- Crabtree is no Megatron. Although, Scheffler is no VD. I hope we can contain him- that is actually the most worrisome match-up for our defense IMO

Ah, didn't realize you were a Saints fan, haha.

We don't need 8 in the box. We have 52 in the box.

Worst tackling i’ve seen in a playoff game.

Couldn’t have been worse than the Falcons today but it was close…

The 49ers are pretty good at wrapping up.

Brees first possession he will drive down the field

Its something I have noticed about Fangio is that the defense doesnt really look all that great on the first drives of the opposing teams offense. It usually ends in a fg, a td, or a turnover in the redzone. But one thing Fangio does is he adjusts well to it after the first series, and the players seem to hone in on their coverages, and assignments a lot better.

Like you mentioned in your post THEY have to get pressure on Brees. He likes to get the ball out quick. I doubt they can pressure him when he drops back and slings it in a 3 step drop. They need great coverage on the backend. Rodgers and company need to play sound especially Goldson, he can not take the gambles he does in this game. Tarrell Brown is going to need help in this game from the safties

Lions v Saints

The Lions played themselves out of this game. The Saints offense completely took over when the Lions started pressing. If the Niners get out to a good lead and hold it with time of possession then they will move on. If they get way behind and press they will get eaten up like the Lions. But, the Lions do not have the Niners defense, nor their confidence and poise. That all comes from Harbaugh and the other coaches. The Niners win this game with the Saints making a frantic but unsuccessful comeback attempt late in the game. So, coming up it’s either the Giants here in The City or the Niners in Green Bay. It’s all over, but the grieving death march in the French Quarter next week.
