Like a lot of you, its struck me as strange that the 49ers first and second round picks, A.J. Jenkins and LaMichael James, haven't seen the field yet. Is this a unique situation, or is this just how successful teams with deep rosters operate?
Well, this is my attempt to answer that question from an objective standpont. After a lot of googling, here's my tabulation of how every first and second round rookie from the 2012 draft is doing so far:
| 2012 1st and 2nd Round Rookies: Progress Report | |
| Playing Time Situation | Count |
| Game One Starter | 26 |
| Rotational Player | 17 |
| Starter Due to Positional Injury | 7 |
| Dealing with Injury Issues | 6 |
| Primary Backup, Generally Active | 4 |
| Generally Inactive (including Jenkins and LMJ) | 3 |
To summarize: Other than A.J. Jenkins and LaMichael James, there is only one other first or second round rookie who's consistently been a healthy scratch this season. Of the 63 players taken in those rounds, 50 have seen consistent playing time, 4 are the primary backups at their position (with only one, QB Brock Osweiler, seeing no meaningful playing time), and 6 are dealing with injury issues. The other three early-round rookies are Jenkins, LMJ, and Eagles second round pick DE Vinny Curry, who is the 10th member of a fantastically deep Eagles defensive line.
Based on these numbers, it would be notable if the 49ers had kept one of their early picks inactive; that they've kept their first and second round pick off the field is nothing short of amazing. And no, I don't think that makes Jenkins and James "busts" -- its far too early to call them that. But it is very strange that neither of these guys are playing, and speaks to the unorthodox nature of the 49ers' 2012 draft strategy.
