Joe Staley injury: 49ers LT suffers concussion

After making their way through the first five games relatively pain free, the 49ers suffered their first "significant" injury as left tackle Joe Staley suffered a concussion. Staley had to leave the game after the head injury and it was subsequently reported as a concussion. He suffered a concussion last year against the Arizona Cardinals.

The 49ers moved Alex Boone from right guard to left tackle, and moved Leonard Davis in to the right guard spot. Daniel Kilgore is also an option at right guard depending on how Davis performs.

Moving forward, Staley will need to pass at least two concussion tests. The NFL concussion procedure requires a concussed player be reviewed by an independent medical expert, and then subsequently by a team or league expert (not sure if it's one or both). It will take a couple days at least before we know Staley's status moving forward. Given the short week before Thursday Night Football, it would not be surprising if Staley sat. We'll see how quickly he is cleared.

Alex Smith throws second pick of the season on poor read

The 49ers dominated for much of the first quarter, dominating time of possession and entering the second quarter with a 3-0 lead after one made and one missed David Akers field goal. However, the Giants have caught a break that allowed them to drive down the field and score a touchdown. On the first play of the 49ers first drive in the second quarter, Alex Smith was intercepted by cornerback Prince Amukamara. The interception was the first home interception for Smith since November 20, 2011.

Smith had an open Delanie Walker, but it looks like he might have misread where Prince was covering. We'll check the coaches' film later this week, but I can't imagine him lobbing that up so easily if he actually thought Amukamara was going to stick with Walker. Whatever the case, the Giants recovered and drove 55 yards down the field for a touchdown. The Giants currently have the ball and a 7-3 lead.
