Alex Smith to Michael Crabtree in GIF form

In spite of some first miscues, the 49ers are in control against the Buffalo Bills, heading into the second half with a 17-3 lead. The 49ers were tied 3-3 and making stupid mistakes that kept the Bills in the game. However, a strong performance by Alex Smith and a key late second quarter turnover have opened.

The 49ers took a 10-3 lead on a touchdown pass to Kyle Williams. They went back and forth with the Bills after that, with Colin Kaepernick fumbling and end-around deep in Bills territory. However, on the ensuing Bills drive, Patrick Willis forced Scott Chandler to fumble the ball, which Dashon Goldson recovered at the Bills 28 with 29 seconds left.

The 49ers have often struggled in going for the throat on offense, but Greg Roman dialed up a perfect play. Michael Crabtree was lined up on rookie cornerback Stephon Gilmore and burned him with ease. Smith threw one over Crabtree's left shoulder and right into him for the easy touchdown grab. The extra point put the 49ers up 17-3 at halftime.

Here is a look at the so-sweet touchdown grab

GIF of Kyle Williams' touchdown reception

The 49ers have taken a 10-3 lead on the Buffalo Bills thanks to a beautiful back-shoulder throw from Alex Smith to Kyle Williams.

Williams lined up on the far right side and ran a go route before stopping suddenly at the 15. After the snap, Alex Smith ran play action and bootleg'd to his right. He had plenty of time and fired the pass to Williams. The 49ers receiver had stopped suddenly and Bills cornerback Aaron Williams could not regain control. As you see below, Williams had little trouble scoring after the reception.

The play marked Williams first reception of the game, and second touch after a 6-yard end around. Alex Smith is 7 of 8 for 180 yards and the touchdown. The Bills will make some adjustments, but their secondary has struggled enough that this could continue for Smith and the 49ers. For now though, the Bills have just punted back to the 49ers who will look to build on the 10-3 lead.

49ers-Bills inactive lists: Some surprises

We break down the 49ers and Bills inactive lists for their Week 5 contest.

Isaac Sopoaga looking unlikely to play

The 49ers will release their inactives at approximately 12:55pm PT, but we are starting to get some ideas about who might be inactive today.

Isaac Sopoaga sat out last week's game with ankle and knee issues that kept him out of practice. Ice returned to practice this week in a limited fashion, and it seems like the 49ers are content to wait another week to get him back in the starting lineup.

If Sopoaga is inactive, Ricky Jean Francois will start in his place. Will Tukuafu is currently listed as the primary backup to Sopoaga, but RJF is the guy who has started in Ice's place during injuries. Ian Williams is listed behind Tukuafu, but would likely be the primary backup to RJF for today's game.

The inactives will come out in less than half an hour, at which point we'll get official news on Sopoaga, as well as the two other "questionable" players: Carlos Rogers and Brandon Jacobs. Both are expected to play, but we'll wait for final word.
