Anyone remember last year's talk on how the NFL offenses would "evolve" to a pure passing attack? That you needed an elite QB to throw over 5000 yards a year to have a chance? That Defenses don't win games and the running game was not needed?
My how things have changed over 5 weeks.
Let's look at the elite offenses of last year.
Green Bay Packers (2-3). Wins against the Bears and the Saints. Losses against the 49ers, Seahawks and Colts. (Yeah, I know they should have beaten the Seahawks, but Green Bay should never have let it stay that close).
New Orleans Saints (1-4). Win against the Chargers. Losses against the Redskins, Panthers, Chiefs, and Packers.
New England Patriots (3-2). Wins against the Titans, Bills, and Broncos. Losses against the Cardinals and the Ravens.
What are the top teams?
(5-0) - Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans (Yeah, the game hasn't been played yet. I'll change this if they lose...heh.)
(4-1) - Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears, Arizona Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers.
There is a trend of hard-nosed teams with good Defenses that have the good records. I contend that old-school football is making a comeback. That the so-called "elite" offenses were as much of a fad as the run-and-shoot. That Defenses will still win you championships.
I do have one point against me though. One of the talking heads mentioned that old-school football was making a comeback.
