Jaguars linked to Tom Gamble, 49ers Director of Player Personnel

We break down Jason LaCanfora's rumor that Tom Gamble is a potential favorite in the Jacksonville Jaguars GM search.

Jason LaCanfora is reporting that sources have told him the Jacksonville Jaguars might be interested in 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble. The Jaguars are looking at a lot of front office turnover with GM Gene Smith expected to be out the door. According to LaCanfora, Gamble has been given a strong recommendation to the Jaguars. Although Smith hasn't been fired yet, all indications seem to be that he is likely out the door.

Gamble is a guy who's name has gained steam as a potential front office candidate. The Jaguars are reportedly interested in developing more of a statistical analysis side of their operation, but Gamble is viewed more as a personnel evaluator. In a general manager role, he would be doing evaluations, but also obviously managing the entire football operations side of the team.

Gamble is wrapping up his second full year as director of player personnel for the 49ers. Prior to that he monitored NFL rosters with an emphasis on scouting talent of upcoming pro free agents. Gamble entered the NFL as an assistant in the Philadelphia Eagles player personnel department, where his father was team President. He worked for the Eagles from 1988 to 1994, working as a college scouting administrator, area scout, contract negotiator, and eventually director of pro scouting. Gamble spent his next two seasons as a defensive assistant/quality control coach for the New York Jets. He served as a college scout for the Colts from 1998 to 2004.

We'll keep an eye on this story, and Big Cat Country as they track their likely GM search.
